The English mountaineer “George Maloney” was asked why he climbed mountains, to which he replied, “Because there is a mountain there. Marco Pantani, the legendary hill climber who won the “Tour de France” twice in a row, was asked, “How can you run up the mountain so fast?

He said, “Because I want to be free from this suffering as soon as possible, even if it’s only for a second.”

Youtuber “Minami” asked, “Why do you eat a full meal at a buffet before going up to the “Shibu Pass?” She answered “Why do you eat a full meal at a buffet before going up to “Shibu-toge”? I am not a foodie. I am a food adventurer.” Good morning.

This is “Minami”, a self-proclaimed adventurer of food and road biking. The second day of Nagano trip also starts here, from “Hotel Kokusai 21” not “Love Revolution 21”.

In front of the hotel, there is a line of government offices, led by the “Nagano” prefectural government office, and there were many people just going to work, so let’s run with caution. I feel a little guilty running beside people who are working to provide better civic services with a full and happy stomach.

Incidentally, today’s destination is Shibu Pass, the highest point on Route 292, the Shiga-Kusatsu Kogen Route, which runs at the highest elevation in all of Japan. Shibu-Toge” is a place I’ve always admired, as Ami-chan climbed it in the anime “Rongu Riders” and I saw many roadies running it in videos and blogs.

You want to lift your bike up in front of the monument that says, “The highest point in Japan.” When I started road cycling slowly, I never thought I would challenge a mountain pass over 2000m on my own.

But after about 2 years, I’ve come to “Nagano” on a weekday to ride my bike, so road biking is still fun. Now, a little detour before the destination. This is the approach to Zenkoji Temple, one of the most famous sightseeing spots in Nagano, which I talked about in the first day.

The approach from here to the main hall, which is designated as a national treasure, is lined with souvenir stores and restaurants, making it a tourist attraction. The splendid “Niomon Gate” can be seen in the back. This building on the approach to the shrine was built by a “palace carpenter” in the “Taisho” era.

The exterior is made of western style concrete and the interior is “Sukiya-zukuri”, a very rare blend of Japanese and Western style. Tomo is a historic ryokan called “Honjin” that has been around since the “Edo” period (1603-1868), where “feudal lords” stayed, and now continues as a fashionable restaurant and wedding banquet hall.

I too would like to have dinner at such a “Taisho” romantic and fashionable restaurant and be presented with a “BORA URTLA WTO” or something like that instead, since I don’t want a ring.

I would love to visit Zenkoji Temple, but I have a “battle I can’t lose” coming up, so if I have time on my way home, I’ll stop by. I’m thinking, “This is a post office, but it’s so quaint.

This also looks like the building of “Gomeikan”, a prestigious ryokan that has been in existence since the “Edo” period. It is said that the ryokan and restaurant are no longer in business, but it is nice to see such a cultural asset class building still in use.

In Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, there was also the famous “Tamagawa Ryokan” where “Osamu Dazai” stayed. It was a registered tangible cultural property, but it was torn down three years ago, and I think “I wish I had visited there before it was gone.

I would love to see the inside, but the mountains are calling today, so I’m not going through with it. Heading north on “Prefectural Road 37,” we first continue through the city. It was hot this morning, and I was wearing exactly the same clothes as in mid-summer.

The thin UV-protective covers on my arms and legs also provide zero warmth. Body temperature seems to totally depend on the intensity of the bike ride, so maybe I’m getting dramatically faster! I’ve passed the intermediate level and am now an advanced rider! but it seems that this day was much hotter than usual.

I found a “Lawson,” so I decided to stop here for a refill. I’ll also tape up the camera, which has a broken mount continuously since yesterday. My own artistic fixation that combines functionality and fixation. Naturally, there are no convenience stores while climbing the pass, so I bring more supplies just in case.

But I feel kind of hungry, so I’ll just go ahead and recharge one for now. Yeah, it’s delicious. On a road bike, it’s too late to refuel when you feel hungry, so refuel early and often. Huh? I think I had all-you-can-eat breakfast today…

I feel like I’m having a hard time around my stomach with my underwear on, so I take it off and get going. Now that we have successfully resupplied, let me tell you a little about “Shibu Pass”.

I am sorry to introduce Shibu Pass to the viewers who have already been biking several times longer than me, but Shibu Pass is a mountain pass passing through Yokoteyama and Shiranesan, which straddle Gunma and Nagano.

It is called a super class mountain in Japan because of its spectacular view beyond the forest limit, and in spring, “snow corridor” of almost 10m high can be seen. This is truly the highest peak on the national highway.

It is no exaggeration to say that this is the “holy land” for cyclists in Japan. I have not been there yet, even by car, and as far as I have been able to find out, there is a series of ceremonies.

First, I lift my road bike high into the sky for a photo at the monument at the highest point of the national road. Next, I go back and forth across the border between “Nagano” and “Gunma” prefectures at the “Shibu-Toge Hotel”. Finally, I touch “Marcus”, the signboard dog of “Shibu-Toge Hotel”.

I would love to intercede in accordance with tradition when I am able to climb the mountain as well. There are two common routes up the Shibu Pass, one starting from Yamanouchi Town on the Nagano side, and the other from Kusatsu on the Gunma side.

This time I am starting from “Nagano” station, so naturally the “Yamanouchi-machi” route is the best choice. However, I have noticed one thing here. This detouring distance is a bit useless.

Yes, that’s right. I was looking at the map, and it looks like there’s a shorter way to get to the highest point that doesn’t involve a detour. There’s time for a return train, and if you can get there in a shorter distance, that’s the way to go.

Naturally the slopes are tougher, but I enjoy plenty of road biking on my days off, and then take the train home on time and get a good night’s sleep. It is what an elite company nurse is supposed to do, to come to work tomorrow in good spirits.

Okay, let’s take the shortest route. Let’s take this shortest route up. By the way, I didn’t know what kind of equipment is the right way to go to “Shibu-toge”, so I called the tourist association of “Nagano” in advance.

There happened to be a cyclist on the staff, and he gave me detailed instructions on everything from clothing to supply points. If you’re in a place that promotes bicycles, you might want to contact the tourist association and ask them once. If you leave the city center, you’ll find a lot of fields.

What are they growing? Oh, it’s “apples! They are bright red and look so delicious. I knew that the fruit kingdom “Nagano” prefecture is a big producer of “apples”, but I didn’t know that they grow a lot of apples even in such a flat land near the city.

Something looks too delicious and makes me hungry again. That’s funny. I haven’t run enough to get a hunger knock. By the way, “apple” is a well-known fruit with high antioxidant properties. Among them, the peel seems to contain the highest amount of antioxidant “polyphenol”.

In the hospitalization scenes of movies and dramas, there are often scenes where the attendants are peeling apples, aren’t there? We bicyclists, who are doing a sport that is like the ultimate in aerobic exercise, should pluck apples from our chaperones and eat the peels.

I would also shove an “apple peel” into a patient’s mouth if I saw it in a hospital ward. I found this on the way to “Shibu Pass.” Amazing. Rusty rusty. This place is called “Toyono Community Center,” but it appeared suddenly in a residential area, so I stopped by without thinking.

This one is called “No. 9646 Steam Locomotive” and it seems to be a car that has been active while being transferred to various places in Japan and appeared in a movie. This car is very damaged because it has been wet with rain and has not been maintained.

But this one has a kind of “abandoned” charm, as you can feel the heartlessness of decay, or the weight of time.

When I see things in decay, I feel empty, thinking that one day all things that have form will be gone, but it makes me realize that that is why this moment has value. I “Minami” will also be a YouTuber, and I’m going to engrave the way of life of this moment on “Google”.

As I was saying such stupid things, suddenly there was a popping sound from the tires. What has a form will one day be gone. Yes, and tires are no exception to that rule. I’ve never been much of a “flat tire god,” but it’s been a long time since I’ve been baptized by one.

But I am also on the edge of intermediate! With this one, this is how it’s done: !!!! Now that the flat tire repair is complete, let’s move on. Driving east on Prefectural Road 66, we cross the Chikumagawa River. The river is wide!

After crossing the river, there are guesthouses and restaurants, making it a little more touristy. This is Obuse, a town developed by the Chikumagawa River. This town is also famous as “Hokusai’s town” because Hokusai Katsushika created many works in this area when he was over 80 years old.

Also, it seems to be the place of chestnuts, which I love. The last time my grandma sent me chestnuts, I immediately peeled them and ate them as “chestnut rice”, they were delicious. Having filled our stomachs with “onigiri” (rice balls), we will now work hard on the climb.

It is almost at the foot of the mountain, so the prefectural road is gradually going uphill. If you go too fast on the gentle climbs in the beginning, it will become harder later on. Gama! Ganma or “Minami”! Is this some kind of quarry? There is dust and it is hard to breathe.

Gama! Gaman ya “minami”! A little further on, we soon come to a pleasant landscape of “apple” fields. Unlike the flatlands of Nagano, the apples here are redder and more delicious due to the difference in altitude. I can’t stand this one! I arrived at “Furusato Center Yamada” with such stupidity.

There is a “Yamazaki Shop” here, and this is the last supply point. So it may be better to prepare well here and climb up. I have 3 bottles of jelly this time, so I move on. Time is 10:12 The temperature is 18 degrees Celsius!

It’s hard to believe that it’s “Nagano” in mid-October, and all the warm clothes I’ve prepared are going to end up as my luggage. Climbing up a gentle slope of about 5% before entering a full-fledged mountain road. Red “V” of victory from red “apple What is this beautifully reddish V-shaped mass?

The “autumn leaves” season may already be over when this video is put out. But where I live in “Tokyo” and “Chiba”, the “autumn leaves” were not colored at all because of the heat, so I was impressed to see the “autumn leaves” in “Nagano”. Autumn is the best cycle season, after all.

As the slope gradually increases, a sign says “Welcome to Shinshu Takayama Onsenkyo! Yup. It kind of emphasizes only the word “high mountain” and I feel like I’m being told, “Now you’re going to climb a very difficult slope whether you want to or not.

I hear that turning right on this road and going up “Prefectural Road No. 112” will take you to “Manza Onsen” which is famous for skiing, so let’s do our best. This is where the real climbing begins. The highest mountain I have climbed so far is “Mt. Tsukuba”, 530m above sea level.

Shibu Pass” which I will climb this time is 2172m and the elevation difference from “Nagano Station” is 1812m… I have no idea how hard it will be, but rather than fear, I am excited to test my current strength and naturally put more effort into pedaling. Oops. No good.

My raging “intermediate mountain climber” blood, be stilled. The important thing is pacing. Oops. I should be paying attention to my pace, but I don’t feel like I’m moving forward at all today. I feel like I’m being pulled into a gravity well, and I’m not making any progress at all.

That’s also why I chose this “Prefectural Route 112,” which I chose to take this time to make it to the train The highest point is at “Maki,” but the average gradient is 8.4% up there.

Especially in the beginning, the slope is 10%-13% and there is no rest point, so it already feels like “Final Boss” from the beginning. In the game “Dragon Quest”, it is like stepping out of the “Village of Beginning” and suddenly encountering “Zoma”. This one only has the initial equipment “hinoki no bou”.

But there aren’t many cars driving around, so it might be nice to be able to drive at my own pace and not have to worry about wind pressure and cars.

When I went down the “Old Hakone Road” before, it was scary because there was a lot of traffic and almost no shoulder, so I still think that choosing a road with less traffic is one of the factors to enjoy road biking.

In other words, I am a genius who chose “this road with a steep slope and not many people” instead of the main road route. Positive. Positive. The straight section of hell is over as we climb through a beautiful green tunnel and are soothed by the beautiful scenery we can see through the trees.

At this point, I feel mentally easier than before because I can ride on the outside of the curve where the slope is slower and I can pedal standing up.

As expected, I don’t yet have the strength to climb all the way to the top at once, so I take a break along the way. Hmmm… It’s a common story with road bike youtubers. “Video doesn’t show how tough the hills are.” In such a case, let’s do this.

You there watching this video. Tilt your smartphone at a 45 degree angle to the right. See, now you can feel the same way as “Minami” is climbing. Huh? You can’t do that because you’re watching on a big TV? You’re a man, you’ve got to have guts! Put some strength in your abdominal muscles.

I was joking, and when I was saying such a stupid thing, I felt something a little uncomfortable in my lower back. I wasn’t lifting a TV deep in the mountains, but I do have some pain in my back and knees. But I’m probably okay, so let’s move on.

I climbed about 20m, realized I forgot my eyewear, and turned back. Oh no…altitude sickness! Oh, I found a place with beautiful autumn leaves! It’s still October, so not much color, but it’s interesting to see how the season is changing more and more as we go up in elevation.

In general, for every 100 meters of elevation gain, the temperature drops 0.6 degrees Celsius. In October or just before the “foliage” season, it is interesting to enjoy the changing colors of the trees as you climb.

My clothes are also showing sweat stains even though it is October, but I have a long way to go, so we are on our way. I guess I have climbed quite a bit, and I can see the “Northern Alps” mountains on my right.

The best angle, with the “autumn leaves” in the foreground like a picture frame. When you see a view like this, it blows away all the pain you’ve been through. The mountain rewarded me for my love of chestnuts, and I couldn’t help but pick up some delicious-looking ones that had fallen nearby.

It’s kind of spiky, but I’ll take it with me in my saddlebags as a souvenir anyway. I think I’m getting to about 1300m elevation by now, and the trees are getting a little lower. I guess the closer we get to the forest limit, the shorter the trees become.

And so we arrive at the “Hokushin Gogaku Observation Deck” where a bear warning is in effect. Very nice view here too. There is nothing special about this place except for a bench for resting.

The town of Nagano is below. And you can see the mountains of “Hoku-shin Gogaku” (five peaks of Mt. Myoko, Mt. Ikarao, Mt. Kurohime, Mt. Togakushi, and Mt. These are mountains whose names are often heard in skiing and other winter sports.

I looked it up and it looks like you can ride a fat tire bike called a “fat bike” on snowy roads, so I guess I’ll go skiing after a long time. After passing the rest stop, I think the slope is a little slower here than it was earlier in the day.

However, something strange happened to my body here. I feel like my back and knees are hurting. While running thinking it might be my imagination, I still feel pain on the inside of my knee when pedaling with my right foot.

Yes, I did feel a little discomfort when I ran yesterday… but I never thought it would come back this far. Stopped for a bit anyway to check on my knee. When I push, there is a point of pain inside the upper right side of the knee.

Even I, an elite nurse who is said to be the second coming of “The Nightingale,” can’t fix this spot, so let’s slow down and move on gradually. Hmmm. Ouch. My back is not at a level that affects my bike riding, but my knee seems to be getting more and more painful.

God. Please give me the strength to somehow make it to the highest point I’ve worked so hard to reach. I want to lift my bicycle in front of the monument and say “Yay. I want to go back and forth between the border of “Gunma” and “Nagano” and say “Yay.

I want to mooch a signboard dog. I have to stop because the pain just won’t go away. I’m not at a level where I can’t climb, but my speed has dropped to about half, and I have no idea how long it will take me to climb another 1,000 meters.

Considering the departure time of the return train, it is risky, so I sadly decide to turn back here this time. I’m so disappointed. But it can’t be helped. This is what I’m capable of now. I resent the bikes passing by, but I will try again with proper preparation and practice.

Ah, the autumn leaves are so beautiful… Now, from here, the work of converting the positional energy stored up to now into kinetic energy. In other words, downhill. If I could reach the highest point, downhill would be fun, but it is a bit depressing to go downhill after retiring.

I didn’t feel any physical pain during my daily practice, but the reason I couldn’t climb this time is that my own strength, form, pedaling and position couldn’t withstand the intensity of the course I ran today.

I didn’t realize it was “Chiba” because of the lack of long climbs, but I’ll go home and do a review of my practice menu and position. I’ll take good measures and try “Shibu-toge” again. When you are beaten, you must fight back. Double payback. That’s Minami’s way.

In no time at all, we are back in front of the “Takayama Onsen” sign. This time, I feel as if he is saying to me, “It must have been hard work on the high mountain. I feel as if he is saying to me.

But let’s refrain from going to “Nagano station” because it looks like we might get cold in the hot spring. Is that a bicycle parking lot? Oh, I forgot about the “chestnuts” that God gave me and I somehow put in my saddlebag!

I could replenish it right here, but I’m afraid I’d get bloody gums from the chestnut peelings, so I’ll just take the feeling and return it naturally. Actually, we have quite a bit of time to spare, so let’s head for “Nagano Station” while driving a little more leisurely. As I was descending the gentle slope from the foot of the mountain to the flatland… STOP! There was a fruit market, so let’s stop by for a bit.

Wow. There are many delicious looking apples and grapes. There are 4 kinds of apples, and you can buy them by the piece. I mean, the farmers let us sample more and more, so as a result, we ate all the “apples” without buying them… So I decided to buy “grapes” here.

500 yen is too cheap for this quantity! It looks like you can eat the whole skin too. Sweet and tasty. The moment you bite into it, the skin breaks and sweet juice spreads out from the inside to fill your mouth. Not too acidic, tastes good.

Couldn’t make it to “Shibu-toge”, but I can feel the astringency in the “grape” skin. Just kidding. With a criminal-grade joke, I would like to show you a little bit of my equipment here. Actually, on the way up to the “Shibu Pass,” my brakes were finally upgraded. ULTEGRA” brakes for crying out loud!

18,000 yen around the price In addition, I assembled it with “Nissen” cables on the recommendation of the store, which was a jackpot and considerably lightened the brake pull. It cost me about 25,000 yen including labor and cables. How much am I paying for a bicycle I bought for 100,000 yen?

But as a result, I am thrilled that the brake, which used to be applied with my arm shoulder all the way to the shoulder, now stops almost entirely with the power of my fingers alone.

Brakes are something I use a lot, so if anyone else has the same problem as me, you may want to replace your brakes. I think you will have less stress and your time on the bike will be more enjoyable. With our bellies and hearts full of fruit, we continue on our way home.

The load is lighter on the ground, so I can run smoothly without feeling that much pain in my knees. Flowers are beautiful. It’s already autumn, but somehow it’s like spring here. I hope spring comes soon for “Minami”, a single nurse. Passing through “Chikuma River”.

Nagano” river seems to have clean water even though it is such a big river near the city. Is it because of the abundance of snowmelt and water flow? I wish our “Arakawa” and “Edogawa” would learn a little from this.

Let’s talk about something else since the scenery doesn’t change on the same route as the one we went. Actually, I, “Minami”, went to “JAPAN CUP” in Utsunomiya, which was held from October 13th for the first time. To say the least, it was great.

I was really impressed to experience the world-class speed and tactics right in front of my eyes. I also practiced taking streaming pictures with a single-lens reflex camera. Professional athletes are beyond “cool” to “beautiful”, aren’t they?

Everything was really beautiful: the form, the pedaling, the body shape that was ultimately squeezed just to ride the bike, the brightly colored clothes, etc. The whole city of Utsunomiya was trying to make the event exciting, and even though I don’t know much about racing, it was a wonderful event that I could enjoy.

I’m back to “Zenkoji” in the center of “Nagano” city. We still have a little time to spare before the train, so let’s stop by for a bit. Zenkoji Temple” has a history of 1,400 years since its foundation, yet it has always been immensely popular as a non-denominational temple that accepts everyone.

This is because “Zenkoji Temple” existed before Buddhism in Japan was divided into different sects. Not only sects, but also women seem to be welcomed, which is rare in Buddhism where women are often forbidden. It was a rare situation in the “Edo” period where there were many female worshippers.

This means that if we learn from “Zenkoji”, there may be a secret to change the gender ratio in the road bike industry where women are scarce.

The “principal image” of the Buddha, the “Ikko-Sanson Amida Nyorai,” is said to be the oldest in Japan, and this is considered an “absolutely secret” Buddha image that is not open to the public at all.

There are various theories as to why it became a “secret Buddha,” but it seems that even the “abbot” is not allowed to see it at all.

Usually, a statue that imitates the main body called “Zenritsu Honzon” is shown to the public instead, but in the case of Zenkoji, even this is a “hidden Buddha” and can only be seen at the “Gokaicho” every seven years.

It may seem like overkill, but that is why this Buddha image attracted the powers of the time and was so valuable that “Takeda Shingen,” “Oda Nobutada,” “Tokugawa Ieyasu,” and “Toyotomi Hideyoshi” fought over it and brought it back to their own territories.

The more it is kept secret, the more it is hidden, the more attractive it becomes. I “Minami” must become a mysterious adult woman with many more secrets. The “Nioimon” and the statues there are very powerful and cool. This was rebuilt in “Taisho” 7, both the statue and the gate.

This statue is 5m high and weighs more than 300kg, but it seems to keep a perfect balance without being fixed to the pedestal. Usually, the legs of “Buddhist statues” have protrusions and are held in place by them, but this “Nio” statue does not have them.

When I used to make models of animated cartoons, there were some kind of supports to hold them up, but it is surprising that this “Buddha statue” is so large that it has no support whatsoever. Omotesando (main road) stretching from “Niomon” has a nice atmosphere with many stores.

It seems to be okay to push the bicycle and walk, so it’s time for a snack. My favorite “baked sweet potato” and “oyaki”. First of all, “Yaki-imo”. This “sweet potato” that has deflated as if it had left me to “eat any more anytime”. Too much love. I’ll take it. Delicious.

Honey overflowing from “sweet potatoes”…honey…honey…honey. It’s warm just to hold it, and I’m already happy. Next is “oyaki”. Thick and firm dough is filled with cubes of “Oyaki”. and overflowing with cubes of apple. Delicious. It is less than 1km to the hotel, but let’s drive safe and steady until the last minute.

I spent 2 days in “Nagano” this time to visit various places and really enjoyed it. I was sad that I couldn’t make it to the top of “Shibu-toge,” but knowing how good I am now, I thought “I want to be able to climb better” and “I want to run faster.

Road biking is really interesting because even as an adult I can still feel the excitement of trying new things like when I was a student. I will continue to challenge new things on youtube, so I hope you will continue to support me.

We have arrived at “Hotel Kokusai 21 Nagano”, not “Leo Palace 21”. Thank you for watching until the end of today! If you like this video, please click the Good button and subscribe to our channel. See you later!
