!!! Important advice about traveling around Bulgaria!!!

Bulgaria is part of the European Union, right? Well…technically it is but the reality is a bit different. In this video, I will tell you the most important things that you need to know before you come to Bulgaria.

At the beginning of the video, I told you that we are in the European Union but not exactly. Let me explain to you what I mean by saying it. Just because our government decided that we need to join Europe doesn’t mean that everybody will accept or like the idea.

By default, we, Bulgarians, always question everything, and it was exactly the same with all new rules and regulations. With a few words, most of the things were left in the grey zone. They exist, but no one worries about them.

This was fine for us, but when a foreigner, rider, or driver comes to travel around Bulgaria they found it, I will use the diplomatic word “Different” but the original reaction is holy shit!

  1. I got inspired of the question in the comments and want to to ask myself. It has nothing to do with this video (but got inspired as well from the way you ride).
Have you ever done a video about the so called "chicken strips"? What do you think about?

  2. Thank you, for representing my country in such a beautifull way! I was working 4 years abroad, i was in the Netherlands, and yeah, there is also beautifull, i went trough Germany, Slovakia, Chech Republic, Serbia, Hungary, but never felt it more beautifull than Bulgaria! Never felt it more "warmer" than here! Bulgarians are for the most part very welcoming people and will ofer you the best hospitality you can expect! Also, for foreigners, you forgot to mention that prices here for renting a room in motel or hotel are usually cheap, as well as the food! Good tip is to use our national money, which is "Lev" or "Leva", as we dont use EURO as main currency!

  3. Hi Pavlin, thank you for this insightful video! I've been traveling your beautiful country around 1985 as a 19 y/o on a MZ ETZ250. Coming from East Germany it took 5 full days in the saddle to get there, the bike packed with spare parts and low tech camping gear. Back then there were almost no cars on Bulgarian roads, but donkey carts in the rural areas. No motorcycles at all. Danube river, Black Sea coast, Rila, Melnik, North Macedonia. What a wonderful country and great people. I always wondered how it would be now.

  4. I would love to ride to Bulgaria with my old vstrom 1000 it seems wonderful. Love and greetings from Greece.

  5. Its been my first time on your channel watching your videos and I have to say that I like them very very much! Very good job that you have done! Your country is also very very green… what a nice places. Greetings from crete Greece!!!

  6. About 15 years ago I toured Bulgaria in a car and I loved the place. A lot of natural beauty and fascinating older places Velika Tarnavo for instance is amazing. Mind you, the car hire company refused to insure the car wheels against damage because there were so many potholes. Would love to visit again on my bike.

  7. Great video. Thanks. Will buy my first motorcycle in EU (already sold everything in Belarus) and visit Bulgaria this summer.

  8. nice video, yes things have improved a lot for sure in Bulgaria.

But Is it safe in the night for the traveler?
Did the police stop asking bribes or writing tickets for no reason as it is common in all of the balkans not only Bulgaria?
Does the taverns & hotels use different price rates for tourists ?
Overtaking 15-20 cars in single road while cars / bikes are coming from the other side is pretty common

All of the above have been witnessed in the past 13 years i have been traveling back and forth .
Still i'm coming back with every chance as its people and its places worth the visit.
You just have to me proactive and take nothing for granded.

  9. Wonderful video, congratulations!
Нямам мотоциклет и наистина не знам какво още чакам.
    Получавате абунамента ми.
    Благодаря!

  10. Another great video Pavlin. I have enjoyed every visit to Bulgaria and always wished I had more time to spend exploring. I forgot the potholes after the first couples of days, they were easily made up for by the marvelous friendly welcome wherever I went. I have never felt unsafe in Bulgaria, and I recommend it to all my friends. I have travelled intercity by rail as well as exploring the countryside and the city people are just as friendly as the country folk. I especially liked the religious tolerance and great food and drink.

  11. I often pass through Bulgaria on my way to Turkey, but I don't feel very safe because I had a couple of problems with fake police on the highway and now when I pass I try to just pass as soon as possible, once in Sofia I was sitting in a van and a colleague I was shopping in a store and they cut the rubber over my eyes. As for the EU, we all know the real reasons why Romania and Bulgaria were pushed in.
Otherwise a nice country with good food

  12. Totally agree, Bulgaria is STUNNING. Though for me, Ukrainian, the reason we avoid Bulgaria and prefer to travel to more western countries is a little bit different but still stupid. I have appeared in Bulgaria just not to ride the common road from Albania to Kyiv, and was charmed!

  13. Thanks for this as i plan to visit .. you are a good man and did a good job of real world as we are all only here for a short time i fear nothing ! well apart from a lady taking my wallet .. but thats only liverpool ..Lol

  14. Just a random comment: in 2012 i barely escaped with my life from a robbery attempt during a night drive in Bulgaria. In 2015 they try to steal my car from a petrol station. In 2021 i was in Varna with some friends, each of us with their own car. Somebody broke into my friend's car in a parking lot at a shopping mall and stole all the luggage, not even the clothes or underware were left. Beautiful country, but things like this are happening way too often. Unfortunately.

  15. I'm planning on buying a bike and riding from Athens, Greece to Razgrad to visit my cousin. Your video was extremely helpful! Keep up the good work!

  16. Има много български мотористи. Биха ви показали пътища които те изминават. Да! Има си проблеми държавата но си има и много добри места за посищения ( I dont know how can robot translate that. But its not place to skip…. It's good country *30% bad peaople or more( i born and live in Bulgarian but have 4 year in Belgium *32 year old) For me ,,,, dont have bad place for Bike … only ppl is problem. Късмет следващия път

  17. Great Video. As an American, the thought of motorcycling around Europe is very intriguing. To experience so many different cultures and cuisines so close together would be amazing. I am particularly interested in the boundary between the west and the east.

  18. Hello, I am writing to you from Skopje, Macedonia. I have visited Bulgaria with a car many times, but with a motorcycle, one of the reasons why I can't come is that motorcycle theft insurance is not valid for Bulgaria, I own and drive almost always new motorcycles and have full theft insurance. I'm honestly sorry it's like that because you have nice places to visit by motorcycle. I wish you good health and many kilometers on the motorcycle 🙂
