Fewston Reservoir

    A Bit of History:

The story of Fewston Reservoir takes us back to 1874 when its construction began, and it wasn’t until 1879 that the Leeds Waterworks Company declared it complete. This project, spanning over four to five years, led to the demolition of Fewston Mill and West House Mill. Yet, from the rubble arose innovation, as the stones from these mills were repurposed to construct a stone wall encircling the reservoir, a testament to sustainable practices even back then. Following closely behind the creation of Swinsty Reservoir, Fewston borrowed some of the machinery from its neighbor to complete its construction. Despite being built a year after Swinsty, Fewston Reservoir boasts a significant capacity of 350 million litres of water, slightly less than Swinsty’s 390 million litres.

    Amenities:

Tucked to the south of Fewston Reservoir, Swinsty Moor car park offers the nearest public toilets, equipped with disability access, ensuring comfort on your explorations. Dog lovers will find joy here, as the reservoir welcomes four-legged friends, complete with disposal bins along the path.

    Food and Drink:

Nestled in the serene Washburn Valley, The Sun Inn, a gem from the 19th century, stands proudly next to Fewston Reservoir. This family and pet-friendly pub invites you to relax in its beer garden, enjoying a refreshing drink and some hearty British classics, all with the convenience of a spacious car park.

    Parking:

Parking is a breeze at Fewston Reservoir car park, and it’s completely free.

    • You’ll find the car park north of the reservoir, at postcode LS21 2NY.

    Access:

Both Swinsty Moor and Fewston Reservoir car parks are equipped with accessible toilets and parking. The trail around the reservoir is welcoming, with a broad and smooth path, peppered with moderate inclines but free from gates, stiles, or steps, ensuring a pleasant journey for everyone.

How to Get To Fewston Reservoir:

For those driving from Leeds City Centre, embark north on King Lane, segueing into the B6161 at Poole in Wharfedale, and follow the road straight to Fewston Reservoir. The drive should take around 50 minutes. However, public transport options to the reservoir are currently unavailable.

It’s windy outside, and to stay warm, I’m wearing a heated vest under my jacket. I bought it from Amazon. If you’re interested or know someone who might like it, here’s a link. If you buy through this link, I’ll earn a small commission because I’m part of the Amazon affiliate program.
