As a former paraglider pilot I can tell you just how massive wind forces on something the size of a mattress can be. As for the young lad with his phone on satnav – that’s not a good reason to be holding your phone.

    1. I've never understood why people do not grasp what's going to happen if you do not secure a relatively flat item against the wind. Have these people really never held their hand out of the window when they were kids?

    2. Your haters aren’t going to like this video Mikey. They like to catalogue and stereotype you as the poor cyclist that envies motorists because you don’t have access to a vehicle. It’s part of their inferiority-complex.

    3. The insecure load to start with; might not be insecure. Defo not as secure as it could be, but so long as it ain’t falling off or spinning about…. I wouldn’t do such a bad job but then I’ve plenty of experience securing loads & driving HGVs.

Now the sirens. Two vehicles obviously; that’s why they’re taught (or used to be) to use different tones in convoy; single use is wail for high speed roads, yelp for low speed roads & yipyip / 2 tone approaching junctions (not actual technical terms), but when more than one vehicle best they use different tones to each other so less than bright drivers know there’s more than one vehicle; don’t work all the time as I found out in the back of an ambo 5yrs ago, another ambo ahead of us yet several harsh brakes cos Joe Public can be a bit of a thicko sometimes.
Laura, I don’t hold it agin you, and how come, Jenny, you never visited me yet you did a later admission? (Again, not held agin you, I know the answer, and yup, I defied expectation & lived, & am fully recovered.)

    4. Certainly the mattress is bending whilst in transit – But mattresses do bend. It may have been strapped tightly, but the video does not prove or disprove it. Either way, I would not have stayed behind it to get a video.

    5. This chap actually might bring insurance prices down eventually . Could be add on +10% discount magic Mike dashcam would be so funny the haters would be loving u then 😂

    6. Saw a mattress clown yesterday where I live, usual foolishness, a single piece of string round the middle.

Who needs to pay someone to move a mattress when you can cause a vehicle pile up all by yourself.

    7. the mattress looks like it's on secure because it is tied in the middle. It's probably less likely to come off because the entire thing is folded in half around the rope so it can't slide out from under the rope.

    8. Charlie Veitch in his most recent blog on YT thinks that what you are doing is wrong catching drivers while waiting at the traffic lights. He thinks that no harm can be done.
But what if they might be using their phones while driving and likely to be tempted not impossible.
      Quite rightly to report them.

    9. 1:10 Your comment about cause causing traffic and congestion make me appreciate cyclists when I am out driving as the traffic would be that much greater if those cyclists had chosen go by car instead.

If half those drivers in Hyde Park had gone by bike instead (and half of all car journeys are within easy walking or cycling distance) then there would be no queue or congestion and everyone would have got to their destination all the sooner.

    10. Back in the days, when ac wasn’t common, you could see mattresses strapped to the roof of cars. People said it protected the car from overheating 🥵 by the hot afternoon sun. Today it’s less common to see such phenomenon, but occasionally you do see one, and once I encountered a mattress laying in the middle of the express lane. I would sure hate to be hit by a flying mattress. Be interesting to hear what the METs had to say about it.

    11. What's the difference between holding your phone looking at satnav stationary and looking at the built in one? In practical terms, not the law. In both instances, your hands are off the wheel and your mind is on navigation yet one is legal and the other isn't?

    12. Do you perhaps mean an UNSECURED load? Whilst it was bending it did remain attached so pretty arguable that it was a SECURED load….maybe that’s why the police didn’t notify you…..but then you always believe your observations are correct.

    13. A magistrate might well ask ,when the driver is presented in Court, " did the load depart the vehicle. Did it hit any other vehicle or person? If not, tell me how it is deemed insecure". Been there , done it whilst trying to make the same complaint to the local equivalent of your DVLA. They told me that they had had multiple complaints of a coal delivery vehicle causing mayhem by driving everywhere at 12-14 mph with unlashed pallets od coal bags on the back. They had to drive this slowly else said bags would depart company. But, until they did, legally , there was nowt that they could legally do -despite their very best efforts.

    14. There really does need to be a nationwide campaign highlighting the fact that holding your mobile phone in stationary traffic is illegal, and will get you 6 points and a 200 quid fine. Too many people think if they're not moving they can use their phone. I'm sick of hearing the "I'm not moving" excuse.

    15. I came across an insecure load yesterday, a pallet of bricks on the back of a Transit tipper that had fell sideways and half of them had fallen off the truck leaving debris all over lane 2 of a dual carriageway, so dangerous for all other road users, luckily no one got hurt. Use ratchet straps guys!

    16. A female motorist died at the M25/A13 interchange in 2007 after transporting a matress on top of her car, after buying it from one of the stores by Lakeside.
It blew off in one of the busy lanes. She stopped and got out and she was then hit by a lorry. It shows you how easy it is to lose your life whilst going about your daily business. You have to be so careful and think about what you are doing and that the decisions you make are the right ones. 🙏🏻

    17. An aunt and uncle famously hit a wardrobe on the M1 back in the 60s. Came off the top of the car in front and, brakes being not what they are today, they couldn't avoid it.

    18. Well done mikey just added a another string to your bow 😂👍👍👍👍👍☘️🇬🇧☘️🇬🇧☘️🇬🇧☘️🇬🇧🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏻‍♂️

    19. This is one of those rare cases where a phone holder was doing something useful. Seems he was looking at google maps on the phone and not doing some Instagram browsing or texting. So strange to see someone doing something useful with their phone. Not to say he didn't break the law, just to say that first time ever I see someone using phone for something useful in traffic.
