How is it going everybody we are back with another awesome episode this time we’re going to be checking out cycling through the heath land in belgium so i’m pretty sure we’re all familiar with the netherlands biking culture but you know we’re going to check out belgium evidently they also have sort of

A viking culture as well maybe not quite as in-depth or as thorough as the netherlands but it’s there nonetheless um so we’re gonna find out about that the original channel is by bicycle dutch and the link to the original video will be in the description section down below as always

So make sure you go check out their channel show them some love hit subscribe they have amazing stuff they really do so um let me switch my screen over here and we’re going to jump into this and find out about this cycling through the heath land i don’t even know what the heath

Land is it’s in belgium though it does say that so let’s find out what is this what is this we’re in belgium and this new structure can be found on the heath near mass mechan in limburg it is an exceptional 300 meter long wooden cycling viaduct okay

From the top it offers a spectacular view over a part of holger kempen national park earlier the province of limbo opened cycling through water what is this about what why did they go under i don’t understand why they didn’t just make a regular bridge like i mean it’s cool wow

And cycling through the trees okay they’re taking it to another level guys that’s what they’re doing over there in belgium this tourist attraction cycling through the heathland was opened in july 2021 it can be found between numbered junctions 550 and 551 okay these three projects try to enhance the cycling experience

They are meant to make cycling paradise limburg an even more attractive tourist destination the cycling viaduct spends a smaller provincial road several authorities invested 1.5 million euros in the project that draws entire families to the heath yeah that’s pretty cool though i mean that’s strangely enough there isn’t

Really a good space at the sea yeah i was wondering because if you look back here how do you see the nature i mean look how tall why does that why why why is the fence so tall like the walls there you know what i mean it’s crazy

Strangely enough there isn’t really a good space at the top for all the people wanting to enjoy the view yeah much like in the other two projects well that looks that looks like indiana right there i mean if somebody showed me this picture and said hey this was took uh you know a

Few miles outside of town i would have no reason to to think otherwise i’m in the trees the vegetation that’s very similar i mean the landscape itself looks pretty similar to what we would have out here in my area of the country okay that’s pretty interesting

See so so netherlands is a lot flatter this belgium is next to the netherlands right i believe it’s like what south of it used to be part of the nose clearly there’s more hills and you can see off in the distance there’s definitely some more hilly landscape drain

Yeah there’s no nature there like you’re blocking it off striking feature of this viaduct is the guarding design the top of which stays at the same horizontal level from beginning to end the spindles appear to be the full height of the viaduct when you cycle on

It or maybe i should say in it yeah you can’t see anything like that on the outside you can see that in reality the spindles only go down to the level of the deck the impressive viaduct cannot easily be reached by car but it is only 13 kilometers from the

Railway station of hank where bicycles can be rented those are hog slides actually in the bottom of hog barns around here i used to do construction hog barns and these cement floor things that’s what you would have in the bottom of like a hog barn and those slats is where the

You know the water and the urine and whatever you know run through into the pit below um yeah they call them hog slabs it’s interesting the railway station is not that much further away from the station of maastricht the cycling distance is exactly 20 kilometers which most people can cycle in just over

An hour okay It’s purely recreational well there you guys have it uh let me switch my screen back over that was interesting i thought it was going to be more about like the biking kind of like culture um evidently that’s not the case it’s more uh you know about the recreational aspect of this

Cycling place in the heath land so which is it is just interesting to me because it seems like you know you can’t see it as you’re driving through because of all the wood so it’s like if you’re doing like a nature cycling thing it kind of takes it’s like

Separating you from nature in a way unless you want to stop and then look through the slats so but anyways that was um by the channel again is bicycle dutch so go check them out show them some love hit subscribe on their channel go hit like on the original video as well so

I will see you guys in the next one take care

    1. Belgium our little brother we like to call stupid . just kidding but belgium and the dutch are the same peope but as like most of our provinces totaly different from eachother , we speak the same language but use different words with the same meaning.
They are realy lovely people . vlaamse friet ( flemish fries) and beers no one can beat . You could see the Netherlands as the workplace , belgium as the night out .

    2. They made three interesting cycling projects which make recreational cycling attractive.
Cycling through water. Where the 'bridge'goes down into the water and your eyes are at water level, while cycling dry.
Cycling through trees. Where you cycle over an elevated path through the tree tops high above the landscape.
Cycling through heath. Where the viaduct is horizontal and in between you climb up until you can look around before descending.
Three very innovative projects within a recreational cycling route that gives you lots of opportunities to look around and experience the landscape in a 'normal' way. They are extras that make cycling even more fun.

In a lot of places Belgium is improving bicycle infrastructure and more and more picking up what their neighbors did well.
At first they experimented a lot, but noticed that the good solutions of the Dutch were truly good and started to copy them correctly.
Belgium is a cycling country as well, especially in the cities, and among youth. And who doesn't want to keep their kids save?
And just like the Dutch they see that if the infra is there and safe, more people will cycle for school, sports and commute.

    3. 180 years ago Belgium was part of the Netherlands. They decided to create their own country. Part of them speak Dutch and part of them speak French.

    4. I lived in Belgium for 7 years, they do have bike-paths like the Netherlands.
-well most cities, sometimes bike-paths just end when you enter the next city/village… πŸ™ˆ

    5. Thank you Charlie for giving some attention to us Belgians! We love cycling too, especially as a sport. The most epic race I have ever seen was the last Paris-Roubaix race (the race we call the hell of the north (of France)) It was postponed from spring to autumn in 2021 due to Covid. A Belgian came in second after leading in front for hours and hours. Those guys are athletes!

    6. I think this is more about tourist stuff instead of making cycling a decent daily mode of transport. It's nice, interesting, but useless for commuting. Even for recreational purpose it's…. neh…
Nice way of trowing away tax money that could be used for decent cycling infra for daily use imho.

    7. In the Netherlands, biking is more "a mode of transport", in belgium its more a sport and passion. Every Sunday morning they ride a sport bike with the local peloton and the sunday afternoon they will watch biking competition on TV with their family. Tour of flanders and paris-roubaix is like the super bowl final here…

    8. Hahaha yep typically Belgium make something with a halfassed plan, and only when its finished realize u fucked up then pretend its normal.
Thank god the beer is good enough to make u forget about it.

    9. I actualy work (landscaping/gardening) in the vilage near where this is placed (i live 10KM away) i pass it a few times every day and watched it be completed over a few years.
(it's an old road that got decomissioned years ago and now extended into the woods towards the existing bikeroad. the road running underneath also used to split around a small "gras island" and is now just a normal 2 lane road)
realy worth to check it out. there also a place near it where you can walk through the woods (barefoot) wich is also quite intresting
