In the next installment of our trip we head out from Astano, Switzerland (where we spent time with our good friend and doing some vid work) to take on the Gotthard Pass continuing on Swiss Bike Route 3.
Climbing up to 2,108 meters (about 7,000 ft) on the famous Tremola road, this vid is Part 1 of 2 as we knew we’d need to break up the climb!
We barely made it to the Gottardo Campsite…haha. Go legs, go!

++Wait, what’s RaD?: Ryan And Darin (that’s us! yes…we both have boy names…is that weird?). Get it? …r And d…R&D…RAD!
++The Adventure: riding our bikes around a bunch of different places in this world for a year: visiting friends, seeing new sights, eating delicious food and taking our time with it all!

Awesome tunes from Epidemic Sound: “Mind” by Mar Vei
It’s coming closer to me I’m faster huh okay let’s go well I was probably the worst night of sleep that I’ve gotten on this whole trip it’s also gonna be the biggest day probably of our trip the next two days so today is day one of two
Days that we’re gonna take to go over the guitar to pass so hopefully we have a nice clear day to head up over the past cool and a little messy but no rain you’re so spoiled here Lawrence it was an espresso maker and the milk Palmer doing maybe we didn’t sleep so because
We’ve been going to bed it 2:00 a.m. every single night waking up at 11 a.m. yeah that might be part of it I mean it needs some brekkie Wow welcome back rad fam it ventures we are heading out from Casa of Athena in Astana and one of the questions that we get asked
Then gone by how far how far do you ride in a day and the answer to that is well in short we really ride about yeah I’ll be right about 100 kilometers I would say which is 65 miles we are from the US so we usually use mileage but I just
Like the way 100 kilometers sounds you know it’s like even but yeah usually 100 kilometers but it really depends you know it depends on the ride like today all the way here today we’re gonna be going up a mountain path so maybe not so far maybe half of that
Alright pause the conversation because we have a Swiss garbage can here step on the bottom put it in drops down somewhere we’re not sure where so clean and efficient mmm still a little bit stinky though just a little bit Made it to me Clea Clea I just like saying that word make legal yeah I’m not really that far getting sweet bags this time and trade it out Morris had some more leaves that he didn’t need and didn’t want to use anymore so yeah generously donated them to us I was
Saying the distance is really depending on the day and of course it depends on the person to you there’s no right or wrong way I mean you could go 10 miles and maybe for you that’s plenty that’s enough it’s a challenge it’s fun it’s all about having fun and I think
Challenging yourself a little bit you know so you feel that reward at the end of the day yeah there’s really no right or wrong you could go 100 miles in the day I don’t really like doing that but you could do it you could well that’s interesting I had a
Hard-boiled egg I guess it was soft boil then the show was a little more fragile than I thought we got this situation huh I’m just gonna leave that for now and get later Brake pads away oh my god it’s so steep oh my gosh what great is this is this what we’re gonna be going up is it gonna be this steep whoo find out So we are writing on the switz route 3 now that’s official route 3 of Switzerland yeah we’re going from the south of Ticino province all the way to the north coast what’s on this is what the path looks like here handily This this dissent is insane there’s actually a bike lane I mean he’s feel like you’re on the highway but we’re sky diving we’re so high up Wow it feels like I I jumped out of a plane and I’m just slowly making my way down to ground level Darren Darren what did you
Think of that descent it’s beautiful it wasn’t switch back East I like got a little ways to go you gotta get down there because she pointed to made it down the long descent it was awesome there are some people going up too and that’s what we’re gonna
Be doing later today and tomorrow check out this view ah a little nap just more beauty Another hour to plump trying to get there before the grocery store closes Well bullying so we made it we made it just really just barely but it’s pretty cute campsite yeah the bikes made it my legs I really made it I was today I don’t think we ate enough I was really really tough you don’t hardly see it’s also hard
Doing a climb at the end of the day but yeah we’re gonna do our little campsite over there look at how beautiful it is worth the climb so how is the day for you today I felt good like halfway through persevered towards en how’s your knee my knees okay
I could feel it pulling a little bit a little bit right a little bit a little bit so what do you I don’t know so what about tomorrow do you think we’re gonna be able to make it the 5,000 6,000 1400 meters I think that’s like three times
What we did today the day was challenging yeah I woke up feeling really tired and I woke up I mean just opened my eyes because I wasn’t actually really sleepy I know you actually like got out of bed because I was awake cuz I can push
Through that no problem I know just kind of in a funk I felt okay for the first bits of climbing in the beginning of the day it was gorgeous and then towards the end my legs were just not working and that’s unusual for me especially climbing I usually enjoy climbing but today was
Definitely a challenge I know that a good night’s sleep can reset so that’s what I’m hoping for tomorrow I don’t know what’s gonna happen postal bus or train I really don’t want to be that I want to get through the top of this path but it is insane look it up Gotthard pass
Hopefully by this time we will have pictures to show you cuz we made it up there I look a fly on my face one of the thousand that I think of today yeah I’m I’m excited to get a hot pizza for dinner and sleep and sleep sleep is nice I need more water
Yeah water – is this still good the muffin top had molded this is ava this from the plane Darrin I was like Darrin we’re just here is she’s like I hate that on the plane how’s it you’re gonna say that it’s like I’m saving this I like that she saved
The plane brownie what do you mean like an airplane brownie Oh Oh the plane yeah yeah those ones I got for free kind of play-doh weed mice do you weigh what [Applause] cozied up here in our tent we have a little rain earlier to hold cloudburst it sounds kind of fun
The tail is completely yeah so just lesson to all of those who are camping when you get to camp just make sure you set up your tent right away no matter what put the rain fly on which we did we just didn’t have it closed specially in these map yeah especially the mountains
And close up all your bags to your hand forever just open like close every bag and then we’re just getting soaking wet stopped so sleeping time now and big climb tomorrow [Applause]

Ortleib upgrade… so good! 🙂
Maurus seems very cool, and I hope you guys are still in touch with him. I am so enjoying catching up on the journey of Rad. Thanks for being awesome.
Love this video 🙂 I came across your New Zealand videos first but now I’m enjoying watching from the start what an amazing trip you had.
"The map is not the territory." Kudos for knowing when to push & when to rest. And this tune is perfect. A great trip continues.
