Vybz Kartel (born Adidja Palmer on January 7, 1976) is a Jamaican dancehall deejay. He was born in Kingston’s Victoria Jubilee Hospital as one of six children. He was introduced to a wide range of music at a young age by two uncles who were also aspiring artists. When he was eleven years old, he decided he wanted to be a deejay, and started creating his own lyrics. Adidja released his first single, “Love Fat Woman,” in 1993 under the moniker Adi Banton, which he picked as a tribute to his role model Buju Banton. He has worked with a number of well-known international hip-hop, and mainstream stars. Vybz Kartel won the award for “Artist of the Decade” at the inaugural Caribbean Music Awards, which recognize Caribbean performers in the Reggae, Dancehall, and Soca categories.
