. Now it’s getting dirty. My hand will be gone soon. I think our bike ride is over. We’re doing something with Porren today. (disgusted:) Lugworms. This is where you really get down. Hello, hello, and welcome to Pellworm. Let’s discover the green island in the Wadden Sea together. I chose the cool off-season. You should have the island all to yourself. Well, we’ll see if that was a good idea. At least I was able to get my Friesennerz out of the closet. The best way to explore Pellworm is by bike, and that’s what I’m doing now with Sven Jensen.

Hello, Sven. – Hello, Simin. You, here you drive 28 kilometers along the dike, along the dike. And you can see the Wadden Sea and green meadows on the dike. Isn’t that boring after a while? – Not at all. The dike and the Wadden Sea are different everywhere. What defines Pellworm for you?

Peace, relaxation, lots of nice people. You have to say yes, you’re one of them. I can’t say anything else. – That’s correct. And I like the weather here. So, the diversity of the weather. So, wind, storm, somehow everything is beautiful. The dike is the highest point on the island,

Apart from the lighthouse. – Yes. Can you even see the sea? You are, how much below sea level? Sometimes a meter. – Yes. We have a few places where we are above sea level. If I stand in the attic I can see the sea, otherwise not.

If I want to see it, I just have to drive to the dike and see if it’s still there. What kind of brick tower is that right next to the church? This brick tower belongs to our old church here. – Ahh. The tower was originally twice as high. And at some point on a quiet day it just fell over. Just like that? In retrospect it turned out

That the soil here is probably not that stable. Well, if you build a church so close to the sea, then that’s not surprising, is it? This church somehow dates back to the twelfth century. And back then there was still the island of Strand. There was Pellworm… there Pellworm was a place.

The island was much larger, the church was in the middle of the island, the old island beach. So it was all bigger than that? The islands and Halligen didn’t exist back then. After the big storm surge, it only formed as we know it today. What can you see in the church now?

In the church we find a very large, old altar. It opens up and you have a lot of figures on the inside. And quite a few female characters. Unusual. – Yes, very unusual for that time. This is the Hellmut and Rita Bahnsen museum. – Mmm. They have been collecting old things in the mudflats for over 50 years. So, pottery shards… skulls… horse skulls… – How does it all end up on the mudflats? Namely, Pellworm used to be much larger, or part of a large island, beach.

And when that fell apart, of course many villages perished. – Yes. Among other things, the village of Rungholt, or the town. And at this point they have repeatedly collected and found things over the last 50 years. For so long, over years, they found shards, individual shards,

Which they were then able to put back together to form whole pots or plates. Great when it rains. – Yes Perfect. Or when the wind gets too strong. – No, the wind never gets too strong. ♪ Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live. ♪ Maybe one of these days you can let the light in. ♪ Show me how big your brave is. Sven, so this is your gateway to the world? If you want to call it that, it is our gateway to the world. I heard that you have a problem with a lot of Pellwormers leaving the island. Have to leave, let’s start like this. You can go to school here on Pellworm up to the 10th grade, up to your secondary school leaving certificate .

If you want to graduate from high school, you have to go to the mainland. The career prospects here on the island are not as broad as on the mainland. Do you think it’s a shame? Absolutely, but I can understand people.

There are a few people coming to the island from outside, like your wife. Exactly, there’s a reason why she’s here. (laughs:) A good one. – Yes. (laughs:) You say. Yes, hopefully she says that too. (laughs:) I’ll drive up. Hello. Wow. What did you order for us, Sven? Pharisees and Frisian cake. – What is that exactly? This is Friesian cake. It consists of a sponge cake, plum jam and whipped cream. Mmm. And what’s in here? Yes, that is the Pharisee. It is said that it dates back to the 19th century.

Namely from our neighboring island Nordstrand. There was a priest who was said to be very strict. In whose presence you were not allowed to drink alcohol. The Nordstranders were clever. That’s why they basically put the rum under the cream so that the alcohol doesn’t evaporate and you can’t smell it.

Smart, but still gets drunk. You just had to make sure that the priest always got the coffee without rum. Once that wasn’t the case, then he is said to have shouted loudly: “You Pharisees!” Thus the story was born. I understand. Then I’ll try that first.

And what’s very important is that you have to stir carefully so that the cream mixes a little bit, and then you say: “Well then.” Am I ready yet? You can’t say “cheers” so you don’t notice that it’s alcohol. Oh oh. Good. – Well then. Well then! Next time a cold Pharisee.

(laughs:) He’s strong. ♪ Say what you say when. And let the words fall out. ♪ Honestly, I want to see you be brave. ♪ With what you want to say. And let the words fall out. ♪ Honestly, I want to see you be brave. Yes, Simin. Here is our Pellworm island mill. Island mill? Aha. That’s why I called Kai here. – Ah, hello, Kai. He can tell you the most. Wind turbines here are a great idea because you have wind. Yes, we have plenty of wind here. Nice cold stiff wind that has a lot of energy.

And no one complains? Because that happens more often with wind farms. That the residents then say: “I don’t really want to.” We have the citizens of Pellworm involved in this facility. Anyone who wanted to could take part and share in the profits. Are you there, Sven? – Yes.

A stake. – A stake, my wife too. And you make sure that no one can complain. Yes, such systems can cast a shadow. For example, shading a building and casting a shadow can then cause a disturbance. These systems stop immediately when a building is affected.

Man, great idea that you showed me that. – Yes, I thought so too. We have a second mill in our program. Exactly. – That’s where we’re going now. I have to admit, the tour we did around Pellworm is more than just the dike and the Wadden Sea. Yes, I said. Yes, I could have believed you straight away. Thank you, Sven. That was a lot of fun today. Gladly, me too.

I still have a lot on my list, you don’t have to be there. Understood. Make a wish. – Good. See you then. ♪ In the night time, when the world is at its rest… By the way, only around 1,200 residents live on Pellworm. If you don’t know exactly where Pellworm is, no problem, we’ll give you a little help. Pellworm is… here. That means Sylt to the north, here like this. The Schleswig-Holstein coast lies here, with Husum and Hamburg.

Most people get dirty while hiking on the mud flats. I’ll do it beforehand. But you only have to wait a few hours and the flood will clean everything up. That’s why you shouldn’t hike alone in the mud flats. That’s why I took Linda and Maxim with me, or they took me.

Thanks for that. – With pleasure. All joking aside, you shouldn’t go into the mud flats alone. Why? Of course the water is a big component; it comes every six hours. And at the wrong time, it can be dangerous. You could sink or be washed away by the tide.

We are also standing at the front of the creek. You think that they aren’t that deep, but when the water comes, they quickly become deep. And behind that, you may not get through. What is a tidal creek? Priele are the wastewater systems of the Wadden Sea. Whenever the water comes or goes,

The water flows back over these rivers or it stops coming. You’re quite experienced at running. You know where to step, right? – Yes hopefully. We knew it until now. Otherwise you’re… you see, right there. Linda, what lives here in the mud flats? Sure, we know lugworms. Exactly, the most typical is the lugworm. I would have suggested that so that we have something in hand and not just talk about it theoretically, we could try to dig one up. It’s best to be quick because of course he can feel it.

That you’re digging? – Yes, and then he wants to leave quickly. Just look. (joyfully:) Ah yes. There is one. Oh, it’s big. I thought they would be much smaller. Not your typical earthworm. You can see the inverted mouth here at the front. They eat the sand by constantly pushing it in with their inverted mouths. Then they filter it, and then these piles come out at the end. Exciting. And how many live here in the mudflats? Wow. – Millions, millions.

We can count times, but we estimate a lot. Wherever you see a pile, there has already been one. I would say we let it go back into the sand so it can live on. Can go about your daily work. – Exactly. You only have to hike for 20 minutes, half an hour through the mudflats, and you’re at the sea. Well finally. – Yes, almost. You’d think how many people just see it here that it’s the open sea. Oh, isn’t that it? – No, that’s the Norderhever. Maybe you drove over it. When you take the ferry from Nordstrand to Pellworm, this big creek. The Norderhever carries water almost permanently.

It is also the case that it can be up to 30 meters deep. I don’t recommend swimming through it. What are you doing here with the people on the mudflat hike? So why go to this edge other than it’s super impressive.

It is the case that a lot of mussels and snails wash up. And you can explain something quite well there. I’ve just found one or two things here. First of all, this is a small hermit crab. Oh how sweet. – Feel free to take it in your hand. He’s looking out there. Cute.

What do you have there, Maxim? I have a cockle. If you were to dig now, you would find a lot of them. This ensures that you also have a firmer floor. And it’s not like mussels that live in banks, but rather that they bury themselves with their burrowing feet and then filter water.

If you find something like that, you shouldn’t pull it out or take it with you. It’s best to put it back again. The empty bowls are not a problem. If you notice that the animals are still alive, it’s better to put them back on the mudflats.

The little man is starting to get impatient. I’ll put it back right away. Thank you very much, that was super exciting. From the smallest mudflat inhabitants we now come to the largest island inhabitants. And I find them on Nico Nommsen’s holiday farm. I could imagine going on holiday here for two weeks to pet everyone. You could be woken up in the morning with your tongue. There’s a force behind it, you wouldn’t know it. Your cows and calves are doing really well, aren’t they? Yes I believe that too. I can say that too. I saw that you even have a special seal for it, it’s called an animal welfare seal. Exactly. We produce milk for animal welfare. And for the Animal Welfare Association, exactly.

Are also constantly checked, and yes. They just have to meet certain requirements. Have enough exercise so that they can go out to pasture. Also a very important criterion. I’ve never milked a cow. Can I try this? But hello, sure. I’ve had enough, I can milk all the cows, no problem. We’ll see if I can do that. They’re huge. It’s a flagship. But really. Especially when you’re at the bottom. Yes, hi. They already know how it works, right? – They know what’s going on. We are now pre-milking and checking the milk.

May I try? – Yes, of course. Nothing comes of it. Take the. – This one here? Exactly, right? This one here? But I’m not good. – That’s okay. Oh, I am sorry. (laughs:) Oh God. You have to go up, next, next, next. Maybe I’m not doing this hard enough.

Nope. Ah, now. (happy:) Yes. Oh, now something’s coming out. Very good. Oxytocin is released in the pituitary gland. – Yes. And that then goes into the bloodstream, then it gets here and opens the sphincter. As with humans, when the child cries, women often produce milk. So now… you take the milking utensil.

Look, and then… let’s turn this on. Put your finger in there. And it sucks with so much pressure. -Okay. Like a vacuum cleaner. And if you look inside, there’s a rubber. – Yes. This pulls and relieves, pulls and relieves. – Turn on. Ah, nice massage.

By the way, anyone who goes on holiday with Nico on the farm can learn to milk here . Oh, you green nine. Yes, really good. And do they like that? I think I’m too timid as a woman. Because I always think, “Oh, I don’t want that.” No, perhaps that is also the power of habit. It’s also clear. That’s twice a day. Yes, well, I’ll say that the first cows that are in

Are grateful that they can give the milk. That she did that, right? That they get rid of the milk. How many liters does a cow give per day? So, the leaders are at 44 liters. They’re still being petted while they’re milking. – Yes. Exactly, oh yes.

With the job you do, you have to put your heart and soul into it. Otherwise it will be difficult, right? The hours that you spend here, from half past four in the morning. And do you know each of your cows by name? Sure, it’s like a big class.

So, this still needs to be sealed. Exactly, sealed, correct. The Heidi Klum is now sealed. So that no dirt gets into the freshly milked udder. It should go well too. Yes, Heidi. (quietly:) Exactly, part of our work is… You may have noticed: Pellworm has no beaches. I don’t think it’s bad. In the cool off-season you don’t feel like swimming anyway. But there are a few that always have a beach, namely seals. I’m going there now and Captain Julia Hofmann is already waiting.

Julia, this is exciting for you too, because you don’t know whether we’ll see seals right away. Yes, I hope so. They are usually there on the seal bank. But that’s just, depending on the weather, wind, that can always change. And they don’t always feel like being outside either.

What are they actually doing on the sandbanks? They spend most of their time resting from their strenuous life as pirates. They are predators and they hunt fish and small creatures all day long. Yes, and then they rest and soak up the sun. Just like us on the beach. Yes, exactly.

And that doesn’t bother them when we drive over in the boat? Maybe, but we always keep a certain distance from the seals. And yes, make sure we’re quiet and nobody makes a loud noise. Seals always look cute? – Yes, exactly. The big googly eyes, you always think: “Oh, how cute.”

But they are simply predators. And they can’t see us very well either. They are very short-sighted and are designed for water. You can see great there, but not so great outside. Then the feeling towards everything that moves is rather skeptical. (happy:) Oh yes, I see some back there. They lie very small on the sandbank and sunbathe. How nice. The lazy ones. I would like to do that too now. Part of this boat tour is also a so-called sea animal catch. Sea creatures are brought to light using a small trawl net . Ah, here it comes. (happy:) Oh, what’s in there? Oh, oh, oh, let’s see if we caught anything. (joyfully:) Ah, look, crabs. Doesn’t look bad at all. – Wow.

Oh, look how many. And there is also a little crab. Here we have sea lettuce. Sea lettuce? – Sea lettuce, exactly. You can actually eat it too. Well, in the salt marshes you often find them washed up and then already dried. Tastes a bit like a salty plastic bag. MHH tasty.

You can look at them, then pass them around for the others. Sounds delicious. I’ll pass it on then. So, you two, some sea lettuce. (quietly:) Thank you very much. The stone picker has a really nice orange color on the front of his head. It’s also really interesting. He is so cute. – Yes. It almost has a kind of leopard print. Yes, I think he’s very beautiful too. – Really trendy. Here we have shrimp. – Exactly.

These are the typical crabs and belong to the crustaceans. And they are normally grayish, yellowish, greenish. These are the classic North Sea crabs? Exactly the ones you eat on the crab roll. I’m from northern Germany, but I can’t pick crabs. I’m learning it now, with Annika Levsen from the Hotel Nordsee Lodge.

What do I have to pay attention to, Annika, when digging crabs? First of all, how you hold them, the fingers at about the second joint. Turn it a quarter of a turn until it cracks a little. – Mmm. Just pull the head off at the front. Take the fillet at the front,

And then you can push and pull on the tail a little bit at the back, and then you have the fillet. For me it does… – In the best case scenario. Didn’t work. We want as much fillet as possible, right? Yes everything. – (laughs:) Everything.

Oh oh oh. There is a lot of wear and tear today. So good. I have one. Very good. – 5,000 still missing. Man, you do that every day? Why don’t you buy them from the freezer? No, it’s gone again. No, we only sell fresh crabs in the restaurant.

The ones that are actually fished here on Pellworm are fished by us. I’m not the fastest either, but I can manage a liter in 20 minutes. – Oh man. Yes, it takes some practice, but once you get the hang of it, it’s fun. Definitely not me yet.

We make it into minced meat and then it goes crazy. With potatoes, bacon, onions and egg. – Mmm. And we make crab cakes out of them. Crab cakes? Exactly. We serve them the classic way with parsley sauce and boiled potatoes. And tastes excellent. – I’ve never eaten that before.

What else do you do with these crab cakes that come out at the end? So, we turn the crabs into crab cakes. And we still offer the crabs in the classic way with scrambled and fried potatoes. Porrenpann, that’s also… – Porren? Porren, again in parsley sauce with potatoes. Does Porren mean?

Porrenpann is Low German for crab. What we do here is how we pear pork. How much are we putting into this, everyone? No, never. (amazed:) What? That gives you upper arms, right? Mmh. Delicious. – Yes. Mmm. Top. That was my culinary highlight. I can promise you, things can only go up from here. Because next we visit the highest viewpoint on the island: the famous lighthouse. By the way, Diana Johns has the key to the lighthouse. And she knows this particularly well. Diana, I think the lighthouse is so beautiful from the outside. The inside is also well preserved. Considering it’s from 1907, it still looks pretty good. There are three identical ones, all of which are still intact.

Were cast from 608 steel parts in the same factory. The parts are all numbered. This is essentially a large kit that has been screwed together with bolts. And then built? Like Ikea for lighthouses? It definitely took a little longer. Oh man, hey, if a part is missing during assembly.

Then you get annoyed. – Yes, that would be bad. How many steps does it have? I’m just asking how much more we have to go. So, all the way to the top 150. How many we’ve already gone… A few. – I don’t know.

But we still have most of it ahead of us. – Let’s get going. Oh, how beautiful. Diana, did the lighthouse keeper live here? No, he lived downstairs in one of the little houses in front of the lighthouse. There are technicians here if he needed support if something broke. You revealed that you can get married here. Exactly. But that’s up on deck nine.

We still have to walk a long way. I think it’s worth it. For the dream wedding. (laughs:) Yes. Diana, who is getting married in the lighthouse? Only islanders or people from outside do this. Lots of people from outside. Above all, people who somehow like this maritime lighthouse and the symbolic effect of a lighthouse. And I want everything to have a bit of a maritime feel.

Totally sweet, with champagne. The rings are already ready. The bride and groom are probably sitting here. Then you have to think about if you get married here, who do you invite? Who wants to walk up all the steps for a wedding? You have to make sure that these are people

Who can walk up here well. The 144 steps to the registry office. And, as you can see, there’s limited space here, right? A bride and groom can take a maximum of eight guests with them. Can it get any higher, or are we at the top? Go two decks higher.

We’re on deck nine, we’re going to deck eleven. What a view? Great. I’ll take a photo right away. If you want to go even higher on Pellworm, you have to reach for the stars. I’ll tell you one thing: it works much better here than in many other places in Germany. When the sun has set behind the dike, it gets really dark here. You can already see it now.

And then you see the stars in their full glory. It is darker here than in most places in Germany. That’s why Pellworm was the first island in Schleswig-Holstein to be officially recognized as a star island. With this wonderful sight I dismiss you. I hope you enjoyed Pellworm.

I can only recommend the low season. You have the feeling that you are alone on the island. Almost. Come here, enjoy it. And get as close to heaven as I am right now. Until then, take care. Bye. SWR 2022
