The Q2 shows that Audi has a youthful side and has here been lightly improved. Jonathan Crouch checks out this appealing little small SUV.
Ten Second Review
Audi aimed to inject a little more fun into its SUV line-up with this more compact and affordable Q2 model – and has here lightly improved it. This little crossover is aimed at customers wanting a Nissan Juke-style small Crossover but requiring a little more class and quality. It’s offered a new direction for the Ingolstadt brand.
Background
‘Fun’ isn’t a word you necessarily associate with Audi. ‘Cool’ perhaps. ‘Classy’ possibly. ‘Mature’ definitely. Well forget that third adjective when it comes to discussion of this car, the Audi Q2. It’s the kind of product that the German brand hopes will lower its target age demographic, at the same time giving buyers of small Crossovers like Nissan’s Juke and Renault’s Captur a more appealing option to aspire towards.
In truth, it’s likely that the Q2 will prove to be a little too pricey for customers of those cars, but premium models in this segment – contenders like Honda’s HR-V, Mazda’s CX-30 and Jeep’s Renegade – should certainly feel the heat from this Q2. Especially in this updated form.

Howy Q2 offers a quality option amongst compact SUVs in the growing small crossover segment and it sets about providing that with a real sense of youthful charm the idea is to deliver the looks of a coupe the agility of a hatchback and the presence of an SUV in a product small but perfectly
Formed we know Audi can do SUVs and the success of its Q3 Q5 and Q7 models testifies to that how good the brand will be at bringing us a more lifestyle orientated crossover something sportier jauntier and more fashion Le well that’s more in question we’re going to find out though
With a whole range of even numbered Q models cars at Audi with call SUVs but models that promis to be stylel trendier and more Dynamic here’s the first of them the little Q2 we had expected this car to be a crossover class version of the company’s
A1 Super Mini but in fact it’s turned out to be a more substantial and pricier thing than that the 4.2 M length makes it only 200 M shorter than a Q3 and like that model it shares nearly all its fundamentals with Audi’s Focus sized A3 hatch on paper it’s enough to leave you
Wondering whether Q2 and Q3 models aren’t really targeting much the same kind of buyer you won’t be thinking that way after taking a closer look the Q2 range is primarily based around smaller engines and those used in the Q3 and the few off-roading pretensions of that car have been almost completely abandoned
Here Plus in keeping with its younger demographic Focus this Q2 is far more personalizable than it showroom stablemate and it’s much sportier to drive so by this point you probably got the idea those in search of a small Juke sized crossover wanting classier quality and a premium badge can find it in this
Audi now that is all very tempting but the price is being asked here mean that to get all this Q2 buyers have to pay the kind of money that would normally get them a significantly larger car of this kind obvious examples of that being the say ateka the volksvagen Tiguan and
The scod Kodiak SUVs that share the same sophisticated uh Volkswagen group mqb platform so is this englishat model really good enough to justify that kind of positioning it’ll be interesting to see given that this is a younger more Dynamic kind of Vy then the Brand’s decision to try and imbue it with
Go-kart style handling doesn’t come as much of a surprise so yes exactly like a mini which means that just as with a mini uh more mature folk who make the mistake of specifying large wheels and over firm suspension are going to need to keep their chiropractor on speed dial
Even a fairly standard Q2 rides pretty firmly especially when fitted with the stiffer Springs that are offered as a no cost option on this sine model stick with the standard Dynamic damping setup though and the compromise reached is quite acceptable given the payoff in cornering agility that’s matched in this
Segment only by the q2’s cousin say ateka as with that car body roll is kept to a minimum thanks to the short wheelbase the wide stance and the structurally rigid platform provided by the high-tech mqb chassis you can’t go too far with it though push really hard through tighter turns and the torque
Vectoring system introduces a subtle Touch of braking restraint to the proceedings overall though the what’s on offer here is a level of driving enjoyment that most small crossovers can’t even approach it’s certainly nothing like anything we’ve previously experienced in an Audi Q model uh a number of other factors also help here
Like the fact that you sit a touch lower than you might expect to in a car of this kind uh plus there’s decent levels of grip and Traction in the two wheel drive variants that nearly all customers will choose the steering’s better than the class Norm 2 borrowed from the S3
Hot hatch and using the so-called Progressive system that introduces an artificial element of agility and making the ratio become increasing more direct as you turn uh you can also alter how much the steering weights up providing you’ve got the Audi Drive select vehicle dynamic system that standard as long as
You avoid entry double trim this is one of those setups that alters the feel of the car to suit the way that you want to drive tweaking not only the steering but also the throttle response the stability control thresholds and on Auto models the gear change timings too there are
Self-explanatory Comfort Dynamic and efficiency mode options and unlike the Rival BMW and Mercedes setups Audi also provides an auto setting for those who can’t decide plus there’s an individual option that you’ll probably never use for those wanting to establish their own mode parameters add in the extra cost adaptive damping package and the
Settings will also aut suspension firms too you’ll want to know about engines uh the range kicks off with the choice of two 116 PS power plants a 3 cylinder 1 L tfsi petrol unit and a 1.6 L TDI Diesel both offer very comparable speed stats
Uh 62 mph from rest in just over 10 seconds on route to 122 mph but of course the diesel has much more mid-range pulling power serving up 250 newm of torque the TDI is also the 116 PS variant that you have to have if you want the option of stronic automatic
Trans transmission a seven-speed setup that’s more responsive and efficient than the uh six-speed exonic unit that smaller Audi used to have despite all that unless you’re thinking of either towing or covering quite a high annual mileage in your Q2 those are both unlikely scenarios for typical buyers uh
Then we suggest that the one liter petrol model might well provide almost everything you’ll need uh that variant eager and relatively Frugal although it’s Buzzy thrum soundtrack won’t be particularly suitable if you occasionally undertake longer trips uh 1.6 L diesel isn’t particularly refined either for regular Highway use you’re
Better off choosing the mid-range engine we’re trying here the 150ps 1.4 L tfsi petrol unit that’ll be a popular choice amongst Q2 folk there’s the same kind of pulling power you get in the 1.6 L Diesel and very acceptable for gity thanks to a cylinder on demand system
That cuts out two of the four four cylinders and light to medium throttle loads uh when all the Pistons are pumping though performance takes a definite step up with 62 mph dispatched in a Brisk 8.5 seconds on route to 131 mph uh and those are figures that apply regardless of your choice between
Six-speed manual transmission or the estron auto gearbox that we’re trying here now these three engines ought to provide really everything you need in this car but should you be determined to spend a bit more there are a couple of uh 2 L units available at the top of the
Range the 2 L tfsi petrol variant which comes only with stronic and Quattro Drive that’ll be a very rare site in our Market although with 190 PS on tap it does offer the kind of performance you get from quite a py hot hatch a more likely Choice amongst well-healed Q2
Buyers is the 150ps 2 L TDI Diesel unit offered only with stronic auto transmission now unlike the smaller engines this one can be ordered with Quattro four-wheel drive if you don’t think that the front driven format will cut it in your neck of the W um this is
The usual on demand setup that uh can instantly direct up to 50% of torque rearwards if a lack of traction demands it there’s no ride height increase to go with Quattro drive though so there’s no real off-road capability beyond the very lightest of Muddy tracks four-wheel drive here is really about helping you
To get the torque to the tarmac and making this variant performance figures rest to 62 mph in 8.1 seconds on route to 131 mph uh achievable in all kinds of weathers plus it helps in raising the brake towing capability up to 1.8 tons even if you didn’t know that Audi
Was trying to do something different with this car but you might guess the fact just by looking at it in place of the cleancut conservatism that characterizes most of the Brand’s other models the company’s new head of design Mark lter has tried to introduce a jauntier younger more individual and
Highly personalizable demeanor which is just as well good this model has to stand out at a segment that’s full of charismatic contenders like the many countrymen and this s’s Juke now if you don’t like it then that’s probably because you’re not the target market in assessing the success of this
Mild styling excess will start as ever at the front where uh headlamp units that can optionally include full LED illumination feature daytime running lights incorporating distinctive Arrow signatures now these Point towards an octagonal Audi singleframe grill which in keeping with SUV expectation has been positioned high up at the Leading Edge
Of the this sculpted Bonnet it’s an aggressive look that’s further emphasized by these large squared off lower vents that sit at the outer edges of a bumper that looks best when as here it’s been finished in body color move to the side and you get a better
Perspective on the size of this model it’s 4,121 mm length making it a mere 197 M shorter than its much pricier Q3 SUV stablemate from here you better appreciate Audi’s further attempts to give this car a bit of extra youthful personality uh take for example the so-called cillar blade clip-on panel
Available and a choice of five finishes depending on the trim level or option you choose now here it’s in matte titanium gray whatever shade you select the idea of this feature is apparently to emphasize the coupe style profile and give the impression that the roof is floating above the car rather than being
Solidly attached to it almost as distinctive is’s this unusual side character crease which splits into two along the front Wing before flowing back into a single crease near the rear door handle uh these wheel Arch trims can be emphasized with a black plastic finish if you want a more rugged look and they
House Alloy rims that range in size from 16 to 19 in uh we’ve got the 18in ones here move to the rear and below this neat integrated roof spoiler you’ll find rear lamps that feature optional LED illumination and which have been sculpted to Echo the shape of the front
Lower vents uh lower down lies a diffuser that aims to offer an underbody protection style look and which can be differentiated in color depending on the trim line and your choice of finish as usually of course what’s more important is a stuff that you can’t see and namely
In this instance the stiff sophisticated mqb platform that this Q2 shares with other compact Volkswagen group SUVs like Volkswagen’s Tiguan and say ateka in this case the wheelbase is sh shared with the three-o version of Adis A3 hatch and it’s built on by the use of high strength Steels that make up over
22% of vehicle structure and which guarantee a high level of passive occupant safety in the event of an accident so time to take a seat inside now as you get in it doesn’t feel especially SUV like there’s no real step up into the driver’s seat now that’s intentional to create a sportier feel
Yet there is still something of the slightly raised position that crossover customers like so much in essence it all means that if you’re switching into this car from a conventional Audi hatch say an A1 or an A3 uh then the minimum of adjustment will be needed the facial
Design shares a lot with those models too which means the defining use of these four air vents or styled to look like miniature jet engines are made up of no fewer than 30 individual Parts including uh outer rings that are shaped for perfect grip it’s all part of surroundings that are very nicely
Finished indeed creating a really premium feeling of quality and class that’s emphasized here by this sine model’s part leather front sport seats and lovely optional fascia inlays that Illuminating a choice of colors at night you do of course have to pay plenty for really desirable features like these but
If you can manage to do that you’ll be getting yourself a driving environment that no other model in the segment can match especially if if you find the extra for a feature that’s been fitted here the optional Audi virtual cockpit this setup replaces the entire instrument vle with 12.3 in color TFT
Screen that’s fully digital and customizable with smart 3D graphics and highly detailed effects they can be viewed in two ways the classic display shows you a prominent Speedo a rev counter and gear indicator but alternatively the progressive display reduces the size of those items and brings functions like like the
Navigation map or your media settings to the four now we’re going to see many more systems of this kind in future years but this one really sets a standard that they all have to try and reach when it comes to Clarity and ease of use anything the instrument class
Can’t tell you will be covered off by the Slimline MMI infotainment screen you’ll find in the center of the fascia It’s s or 8.3 in in size depending on the connectivity package you’ve ordered now A little disappointingly it’s fixed in position rather than gliding out of
The dashtop in the way it does on an A3 but the intuitive menus and classy Graphics work well with audio informational and phone orientated functions that you can prompt via this chrome Edge rotary controller behind the gear stick now a standard the monitors provided with the useful Audi smartphone
Interface that through Apple carplay and Android auto smartphone connectivity uh will allow um everything you access on your handset to be duplicated onto to the display now from here you’ll also be able to access a whole raft of 4G online wi-fi options by the clever Audi connect
System that’s standard on a trial basis at least uh as long as you avoid entry devil trim now that setup is powered by a super fast LTE module it will give you download speed of up to 100 megabits per second and which can allow you to navigate bya Google Earth Google Street
View and Google Maps plus it can link you into Twitter access Google online and give you weather news and travel information as you drive but once you’ve tried all this you probably won’t want to be without it at extra cost you can further upgrade yourself to the premium
MMI navigation plus with MMI Touch system that we’re trying here now that comes as part of the pricey technology pack that you’ll need for that virtual cockpit instrument layer that I mentioned earlier and features crisp 3D maps Dynamic route guidance a 10 GB jukebox hard drive and a DVD player plus
With this more advanced setup uh the rotary controller comes with a touch sensitive surface that you can uh Trace commands on with your fingertips of course not everything’s been perfectly executed uh the wide windscreen pillars occasionally obstruct your view at Junctions and these thick rear C pillars do the same at times when
You’re reversing making it important to tick the box for the optional rear parking sensors it’s also a bit mean on a car of this price to make PES pay extra for driver’s seat Lumber support and a lockable glove box at least that compartment is decently sized as are the
Door Pockets uh space in the storage box between the front seats is a bit restricted though but it is a useful place to put your phone thanks to the provision of an or in point and a USB socket now if as here you’ve got the Audi phone box option fit there’s even a
Pad of this compartment that charges your handset and boosts its reception let’s move into the rear seat and area of the car you might expect to be quite tight on Space given that this car is shorter and narrower than the A3 hatches based on actually though the
Amount of room you get back here is very comparable to that model which means that a 6t passenger can sit behind a 6ft driver in reasonable Comfort uh yes your knees might possibly brush the front seatbacks but you won’t have to splay your legs out around them a sliding
Bench seat uh the kind of thing you get an a rival Renault capture would have improved things even further in thisr but Audi doesn’t offer that the lack of that feature along with this prominent Central transmission tunnel will also make life difficult on the rare occasions when you have to uh transport
Three adults in the back here but then virtually every other model in this uh class also stuggles in that regard a trio of kids will be absolutely fine though so finally let’s check out the boot space on offer um accessed in this case by an optionally powered tailgate
That seems a bit unnecessary in a car of this kind uh once that’s raised and you’ve negotiated The Fairly High loading lip uh a usefully sized 405 L luggage area is revealed with exactly 1 meter of cargo bay width that should easily swallow baby buggies and the like
Uh that’s 25 L more space and you’d find it in a longer A3 sportb although it’s still 45 L less than you get an a rival mini Countryman uh there’s a bag hook the usual securing points for heavy items and an adjustable height boot floor although you can’t
Have that with either of the optional uh sound systems because the subwoofer will get in the way now space has been created underneath this by Audi’s unwillingness to supply this car as standard with any kind of spare wheel now you have to do without most of that
Space though if you pay extra for the optional bang and aome sound system because the subwoofer for that will take up around 20% of the boot space if more rooms needed you can fold the rear bench with the usual 6040 split or there’s an optional 40 20 40 split folding setup if
You want it uh once everything’s flattened uh then you can create a completely level loading area that offers 1,50 L of space the Q2 opens up only ship of an Audi Q model to a whole new range of buyers prior to its arrival a sum in the
27 to 30,000 bracket was necessary for Android old versions of the company’s only slightly larger Q3 in contrast because the Q2 offers a saving of nearly 3,000 over at showroom stablemate and because it uses some smaller more affordable engines it can be priced from not much more than £21,000 with
Virtually the whole range costing below 30,000 thank get too carried away before you consider the caveats though that entry level figure applies to a base 1 L 3 cylinder petrol model that won’t really suit if longer trips were on the cards for those you’ll need to stretch to around
£23,000 that’s a figure that’ll give you uh the choice of either this models 1.4 L petrol unit or an alternative 1.6 L TDI Diesel with A500 option in each case of s speed esonic auto transmission if you want that in both cases you’ll be paying fractionally more than you would
Be for a mechanically similar version of his more conventional A3 sportback hatch Quattro four-wheel drive Q2 Biers comes only further up the range where it has to be mated to the largest 2 L diesel engine and stronic auto transmission all of which means quite a hefty asking price of around £31,000
On to Rivals well are there any really direct Alternatives theoretically You could argue not after all the smallest crossover class SUVs that BMW and marceles make are really sized and priced to compete more directly with the slightly larger AI Q3 uh you’re looking at needing to pay in the 26 to 27,000
Bracket for these least expensive Merc GLA and BMW X1 models cars that are going to cost you more to run than this one and which lack this added scope for personalization otherwise the only other options come with mainstream maker badge work there is of course a big saving
Potentially what over £5,000 to be gained in this segment by choosing something like in this ANUK or Renault capture over a Q2 but we don’t think that many potential Audi buyers will be tempted to do that some of the more aspirational volume Brands though do offer small crossovers that might
Potentially tempt a likely Q2 buyer uh a fraction less than the englishap brand asks here we’ll get you a comparable version of the mini Countryman which is a slightly larger car and around 2 to 3,000 less will get you a quite desirable small crossover like Honda’s HRV uh Mazda cx3 and jeeps Renegade
Though all will cost you more to run ultimately of course it depends on what you want and if it’s a car of this kind with half sensible pricing and a credibly premium badge on the Monet then it’s difficult to avoid the notion that a Q2 might well suit your requirements
Perfectly now if you agree that to be the case then you’re going to need to know just how generous Audi’s been with the standard specification so let’s take a look at that um Bas SE trim is recognizable by its 16-in five-spoke design alloy wheels and c-pillar blade panels finished in metallic Manhattan
Gray and you get a progressive steering feature that varies the steering ratio based on your speed supposedly making highspeed cornering more direct and parking easier uh inside on an SE spect Q2 there’s air conditioning and a leather trimmed multi-function steering wheel which has controls for the provided MMI radio plus infotainment
Setup this incorporates a four-speaker dab radio system Bluetooth phone connectivity voice control and the Audi smartphone interface which allows you to use the Apple carplay or Android auto systems to connect your handstamp up to the 7-in color MMI screen that sits in the center of the dash uh there’s also a
CD player an orcin socket two USB ports and a pair of SDXC card readers is it worth finding the premium of around £600 to trade up to mid-range sport trim well most Q2 bars will probably think it is uh this trim level is recognizable by larger 17in five arm start design alloy
Wheels and cillar blade panels that are finished in metallic ice silver other key features include the Audi Drive select system that allows you to tweak the steering and throttle response to suit the weight that you want to drive other sport inclusion run to cruise control sport seats Auto headlamps and
Wipers plus extra aluminium interior trim uh there’s also an SD card-based MMI navigation system uh also a better quality eight speaker stereo and a three-month trial that allow you to use AUD connect infotainment services that work via 4G internet access now key benefit of having MMI navigation fitted
Is that you’ll also be able to download and use a free Audi MMI Connect app on your smartphone now this will allow you to do things like locate the car if you forgot where you parked it uh plus you can plan a route on the app upload it to
Your Q2 and then use the app to update yourself on traffic conditions throughout the journey here though we’ve been trying the top sine variant and that’s recognizable by its 18-in five-spoke y design alloy wheels it’s sine body styling pack its body cutor bumpers and c-pillar blade panels finished in matte titanium gray other
Embellishments at this level include part leather sea in uh stainless steel pedals LED technology for the front and rear lights headlamp washers uh an LED interior lighting pack and the no cost option of stiffer sport suspension if you want it uh most of these features are available at extra cost on SE or
Sport models if you need them and talking of options uh we’re used to Audi models offering plenty of scope for extra spend but you have to say that the Q2 takes that concept to a whole another level uh for the interior alone there apparently 5 million customizable variations so perhaps that’s where we
Should start in terms of the whole personalization process now perhaps our favorite feature is the illuminated fascia inlays you can get that light up in 10 different colors and come as part of the LED interior lighting pack Advanced option even the conventional stuff is a little different though so
For example you can Jazz up the seat finishing in a variety of eye-catching ways uh the cloth chairs can be ordered with contrast stitching or even with bright orange upholstery inserts if you really want to brighten things up uh if your Q2 has Sports seats they can be
Trimmed in either cloth leather or as here in a combination of both uh the full leather finishes come with a choice of either Milano or softer napah hiide and whatever your choice of seat material a Q2 sport seat can if you wish come finished with leatherette contrast
Stripes and stitching in a variety of colors sine model buyers get a leathern alen Tower option too you’re going to want to get the Aesthetics right outside too uh sport models can get this sine variant body colored bumpers and there’s the option to chop and change with the
Various cillar blade colors I mentioned earlier or order those panels with a solid ibis white finish your decision here will of course depend on the primary paint color that You’ selected and there’s a wide selection of solid and metallic Shades including a striking vegus yellow finish plus a couple of
Really nice Crystal effect and pearl effect finishes the Finishing Touch will come via your selection from the wide range of alloy wheel designs at Audi offers with rims varying in size from 16 to 19 in uh the large options do look great but they denigrate the ride
Quality so our advice would be of course try before you buy on to technology now if you’re into that then budget permitting you’ll be well up for the optional technology pack that we’ve been trying here which has four main elements uh the first of these is the Innovative Audi virtual cockpit
System that we’ve got used to seeing on some of the Brand’s other models uh 12.3in TFT color display that completely replaces the instrument vle conventional dials uh it’s totally configurable very futuristic and probably one of this model’s biggest showroom talking points otherwise the technology pack is all about three features that are designed
To improve your media connectivity now one of these is the Audi phone box system that uh will wirelessly charge your smartphone and also improve its reception quality via the roof antenna a more important inclusion though is AI sophisticated MMI navigation plus with MMI touch setup with its larger 8.3 in
Center dash screen uh crisp 3D ma display 10 GB music hard drive DVD player and responsive Nvidia Graphics now with this you get a touch sensitive surface for the MMI rotary controller so that commands can be with your fingertips finally and perhaps most significantly the technology pack gives
You a 3year subscription to the thing that really completes the MMI Subs functionality namely the Audi connect connectivity system Audi connect is something we really need to tell you a bit more about now even if you don’t specify the technology pack I just mentioned this is a setup you get to try
Free for the first three months of Q2 ownership provided you avoid entry level trim it underlines Audi’s determination to create in this car class leading levels of media connectivity working via an embedded SIM card that’s permanently installed in the car and works on a data flat rate so you won’t be stung with
High roaming charges if you do a bit of InterContinental motoring now the setup comes with an LTE data transmission module that establishes high-speed 4G internet 3 access and creates in the Q2 a Wi-Fi hotspot uh it also allows you to navigate with images from Google Earth um access the Google points of interest
Search function with voice control and use a web Radio setup with stations from all around the world uh through the connect system you can also access special incar versions of your Facebook and Twitter pages and it’s also possible to read write and send text messages and emails uh the included online media
Streaming package will give you access to millions of music tracks and there’s also a clever Audi online traffic information system and that uses live traffic information to re-root you around jams plus the set can also deliver parking information uh displaying details on parking lots and parking garages almost anywhere that you
Like to go so Motoring in the 21st century yes what else could you spend a little extra on uh well let’s progress to the driving stuff uh you can have this sine variant stiffer sport suspension that’s a setup lowered by 10 mm as an option on lesser sport
Derivatives a better solution though is the optional adaptive damping package which works through the settings of the drive select driving mode system that almost all Q2 bars will want uh Drive select by the way is an option with SE trim which as we mentioned earlier is the only spec level that doesn’t feature
That as standard as for other driving related extras uh well if you haven’t stretched up to this model’s sine spec level you can also add in a full LED headlamp and tail light package that includes Addis eye-catching scrolling Dynamic rear indic indicators and all q2’s can be specified with a headlight
High beam assist system that’ll automatically dip your lights for you at night uh cruise control is another option or you could go further and get an adaptive cruise control setup that uses radar sensors to automatically regulate your highway speed a head-up display is available at extra cost too
Uh and we should mention parking there’s plenty of optional help for that uh whether you want rear parking sensors um a rear view camera the Audi parking system plus setup that guides you with a visual display or even the full park assist package that actively searches for spaces and then can automatically
Steer you into them what else um well your Journeys are going to be a touch more pleasant if you’ve upgraded the audio setup either to the 10 speaker 180 WT Audi sound system we’ve been trying here or even better the 14 speaker 705 watt bang and Olen setup with its
Concert Hall quality 3D surround sound uh this particular model also has an extended interior holstery pack that delivers a stitched leatherette finish for the front knee pads and the door armrest plus it has a comfort pack that additionally gives you heated front seats uh dual zone climate control and
Rear parking sensors other key options Q2 buyers might want to look at include a panoramic glass sunroof an advanced key killis entry and start system uh privacy glass power folding mirrors and an auto dimming rear view mirror the steering wheel be heated and if you’ve avoided entry LA Trim you might want to
Pay extra to have that in sporty flat bottomed form uh plus you might also want to look at upgrading the front seats with things like heating elements and four-way powered Lumber support now if you do without the virtual cockpit setup there’s also an optional driver’s information system that’s Audi speak for
3 and 1/2 in color information display that can be added to the instrument cluster perhaps practical touches are a greater priority for you though uh things like a power operated tailgate a removable lockable toe bar or a rear bench that splits more flexibly in a 42040 format uh we’d also want to pay
Extra for the storage and USB rear pack that gives you Nets in the front seat backs uh storage uh area that’s under the front seat uh lockable glove box a net and a light for the boot and two USB charging points for rear seated folk don’t forget to specify a spare wheel
Either now regrettably ad’s joined the trend in this segment that leaves you having to fill around with a tire repair kit in the event of a puncture enough with optional niceties let’s move on to look at safety now there’s no driver’s Knee Bag and you have to pay extra for a
Hill holder clutch but otherwise most of the main features you expect are present in correct uh so you get uh across the range the usual twin front side and head airbags plus ice fixed child seat fastenings and a tire pressure warning light the usual electronic assistance for braking and stability control is
Included as well as adaptive brake lights that flash during emergency stops to warn following motorists Audi pre-sense front autonomous braking is standard on all models there’s also a multicollision brake assist system that after an impact will automatically apply the brakes to stop you from going on to
Hit something else now pay a little extra and you can also add in Audi’s clever Audi presense basic system that tightens the seat belts closes the windows and activates the hazard warning lights if the electronic suggest that the crash impacts imminent uh the really sophisticated electronic safety features
Though are all on the options list and to get those you’ll need one of the Brand’s optional driver assistance packs go for a pack like that and you’ll get adaptive cruise control active Lane assist to help you stay in lane and a traffic sign recognition feature it’ll
Work if your car’s been fitted out with navigation plus Audi will also throw in the parking system plus and high beam assist features that we mentioned earlier on an estron automatic Q2 uh that driver assistance pack includes two further features uh a clever traffic jam assist element that allow the car to
Effectively drive itself in heavy traffic at speeds of up to 40 mph and an emergency assist setup that works when the active Lane assist and adaptive cruise control systems were active uh monitoring your reactions now if the electronics present no driver activity let’s say for example you were suddenly
Taken ill then if the warnings aren’t responded to the car will be held in lane and gradually automatically completely brought to a standstill it’s all very reassuring uh Q2 bars who specified the technology pack we mentioned earlier and who want to go even further with standard electronic safety cleverness uh
Can ask that Audi Center to add in the driver assistance pack Advanced option now with this as a starting point you’ll get all the driver assistance pack features just mentioned the exact ones depending on your car’s transmission Choice uh then to these elements will be added Audi side assist that’s a system
That stops you from pulling out to overtake when there’s a vehicle in your blind spot um and which also includes a feature called cross traffic assist rear and this alerts you to oncoming traffic when you’re reversing out of a parking space now with all of that fitted you
Really would be doing very well to have an accident in your Q2 there’s no doubt that a lot of people are going to be drawn to the Q2 for the way it looks and the way it drives but the efficiency numbers still have to stack up if this Audi is going to have
Widespread appeal and to make sure they do Audi has kept the weight of this model down to around 1.3 tons and added in its usual Suite of efficiency measures now the these include a stop start system that cuts the engine when you don’t need it when you’re stuck in
Traffic or perhaps waiting at the lights and also brake energy recuperation which recycles energy that you would otherwise lose under braking or cruising uh there’s also uh selectable efficiency setting on models fitted with the drive select vehicle dynamic system onto the figures uh we’ll start with the more affordable engines that most Q2
Customers will choose uh so at the further range you get 116 PS in the form of either the 1 L tfsi petrol unit or the 1.6 L TDI Diesel you can see why many buyers might be drawn to the diesel thanks to its combined cycle showing of
Up to 64.2 MPG that improves further to 68.9 MPG if you specify estron auto transmission don’t dismiss the manual only 1 liter petrol option though if you’re a low mileage driver and it still manages up to 55.4 MPG on the combin cycle here though we’re trying the 150
PS 1.4 L tfsi petrol model that Audi expects a large proportion of Q2 bus to choose now this uses high-tech cylinder on demand technology that sees the four cylinder engine running on only two of its cylinders at low to mid throttle speeds now thanks to that on 16in Wheels
This variant manages a combin cycle figure of up to 51.4 MPG and 124 G per km of CO2 those are readings that fractionally improve to 54.3 MPG and 119 G per km if you fit the esonic auto gearbox now if you want some perspective on that uh a comparably priced and
Powered fashionable small crossover rival like uh say Jeep’s Renegade 1.4 multiair would return 47.1 MPG and 141 G per kilm in manual form and that is a difference that would really add up over a typical ownership period few Q2 bars will go for the 2 L TDI diesel option at
The top of the range but those that do can expect to manage just over 60 MPG and close to 120 g per km of CO2 in the two wheeel Drive uh stronic automatic version although those figures do fall to 58.9 MPG and 125 G per km if you add
In Quattro four-wheel drive so onto depreciation now as always that’s an major Audi selling point choose the base one petrol model and according to Independent experts cat monitor uh your Q2 will typically be worth 43% of its new cost after 3 years and 60,000 Mi which to give you some perspective is
About 3% better than a comparable rival 1.5 L mini Countryman choose one of the 1.4 L tfsi petrol or 1.6 L TDI Diesel versions and you can reckon on that figure pitching in at around 41 to 42% over the same period choose one of the 1.4 L TFI petrol or 1.6 TDI Diesel
Versions and you can reckon on that figure pitching in at around 41 to 42% over the same period that puts this German small crossover right at the top of its class in that regard as for servicing costs well Audi service intervals tend to range from every 9,000
Mi for minor checks to every 19,000 Mi for a full service uh further assistance in that regard is provided by a fixed price servicing plan that can cover you for between 3 and 5 years in fact this car could even book its own service appointments via an Audi connect safety
And service system app now as well as providing emergency calling and online roadside assistance uh this feature can at the appropriate time uh send a service request direct to your local dealer now another neat service that your dealer can offer you is a so-called Audi cam system now here technicians
Carrying out Workshop inspections on your Q2 can focus a handheld Audi cam camera on specific problems accompanying the image with a verbal diagnosis to create footage that can be sent to your computer or to your smartphone now that way uh you’ll know exactly what work you’re authorizing on your car onto the
Warranty now all contenders in this class get three years of cover but whereas BMW and Mercedes don’t limit your mileage in this period Audi rather meanly restricts you to 60,000 Mi optional extra cost warranty packages can extend that cover to either 4 years and 75,000 Mi or 5 years and 990,000 Mi
If the worst happens and the car breaks down then there’s free roadside assistance included for the first 36 months of ownership finally let’s give you a feel for the insurance groupings one ler tfsi petrol is pitched at group 13e The 1.6 L TDI Diesel is rated at
Group 14e and this 1.4 L tfsi petrol variant uh comes in at group 20e we started this review thinking that this Q2 might steal sales from some of Audi’s other models primarily those in the Q3 and A3 ranges we’re finishing this film though quite convinced that it
Won’t this product you see is very different to almost anything else the company makes with a younger trendier more fashion Le feel if you like it represents A’s playful side yes there is a premium necessary for purchase but you’d expect that pay it and you’re rewarded with brilliant
Build quality a classy cabin and really strong residuals that will return much of your original investment to you when the time comes to sell it all explains why this car is managing to appeal to so many people in the compact crossover segment especially perhaps those who might otherwise have bought a mini badge
Product it’s not perfect of course of course uh not everyone will like the styling uh you’ll need to avoid the larger wheel Rim sizes if you want a decent quality of ride and some ourselves included might find themselves a little disappointed that the premium pricing doesn’t deliver a little more in
Terms of standard kit otherwise though there’s very little to criticize I mean Audi may have taken its time in entering this part of the crossover segment but it’s been well worth the wait the Q2 is fun it’s fashionable and it’s perfectly pitched for aspirational compact crossover
Buyers now if you are one of those people we think you’re probably going to want [Applause] One
