Contrary to popular belief, the most beautiful canals city in Europe is not Amsterdam, Venice or Saint Petersburg. According to GoEuro, the winner is Utrecht!

Utrecht is known for its beautiful canals, historical buildings dating back to the Middle Ages, and being one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. It is also known for its picturesque city center, traditional cafe culture, and exciting music and art scene.

Utrecht is an exceptional cycling city, ranking third in the world on the 2019 Copenhagenize list, and as of August 2019 is home to the world’s largest multi-storey bike park.

Some of the must-see sights and hidden gems include the Spoorwegmuseum (Railway Museum), the Botanic Gardens, the Oude Hortus, and Wilhelminapark.

Utrecht is also home to Utrecht University, the largest university in the Netherlands, and several other institutions of higher education.

Due to its central position within the country, it is an important hub for both rail and road transport, and it has the busiest train station in the Netherlands, Utrecht Centraal.

April to September is the best time to visit Utrecht weather-wise. Utrecht is slightly cheaper compared to Amsterdam when it comes down to accommodation and food costs.
