“According to the judge who presided over this case, this is the most gruesome crime that he has ever encountered”. It involves an investment banker who worked for Merrill Lynch and draws parallels to the Hollywood blockbuster American Psycho, but just so much worse. Watch till the end to learn how it all unfolded.

In the heart of Asia, is a city known for its towering skyscrapers, bustling markets, and vibrant culture – you may have guessed it, it’s Hong Kong. Hong Kong also serves as the financial hub of Asia and has a population of over 7 million people.

It attracts worldwide talent and expatriates looking to make good money in the city of business. People in the city enjoy world class transportation, and a sense of security due to one of the lowest crime rates per capita in the world.

However this perception was challenged by a crime, that was that was so vile, so inhumane, and unthinkable… that is scarred the minds of many who had to bear witness to its details. The jury consisted of ordinary citizens, people like you and me, who called upon to make extraordinary

Decisions… but they were not ready to witness such sickening acts of depravity. Indeed, the judge presiding over this case apologized to the jurors and made an unprecedented decision. By recognizing the emotional toll this may have taken on them, and as a token of appreciation,

He doubled their jury duty pay, and exempted them from ever having to serve jury duty in their lifetimes again. This is the story of a crime that rocked Hong Kong. : Phone call November 1st, 2014, the very late hours of Halloween, police received a phone call at 3:42am.

On the other end was man who spoke English, which is accepted, but less common in Hong Kong as most of the population speaks Cantonese. The call came from the wealthy apartment complex of J residence, in the Wanchai District. On the call was a largely incoherent, rambling man, saying something happened, and that an

Army was surrounding his home and were about to attack him. His words were slurred, he sounded out of his mind, likely intoxicated or on drugs as the operator noted down. He couldn’t be heard clearly, but the operator decided to dispatch a pair of police officers as a welfare check anyways.

The Gruesome Discovery: Upon arrival, the police were greeted by the man, he was a quarter Chinese-British expat, and looked like a complete mess. He was covered in sweat, reeked of body odor, and his hair and face looked like he hadn’t cleaned himself in days.

He was also behaving erratically, initially referring to the police officers as ‘ninjas’. He welcomed them inside his apartment and told them to ‘see for themselves’. As they entered the apartment, they lay witness to a horrifying scene. A woman’s naked and bloodied body lay before their eyes, marred by numerous wounds, cuts

And bruises, and with blood staining the surroundings. She had a large cut across her neck, the primary source of her blood, and her wounds looked fresh, but upon checking for a pulse, she was already dead. The Police officers, or ‘ninjas’ according to the man, immediately arrested him, and

Took him back to the police station. The apartment was sealed off and declared a crime scene, and the Wan Chai Crime Squad took over the case. The man was coherent enough to identify himself as a British citizen, and said he wanted assistance

From the British Consulate, he also demanded to be transferred back to the UK. The Hidden Horror: The apartment was a mess, investigators found pliers, sex toys and traces of cocaine everywhere. But the most shocking discovery was a black suitcase left out on the balcony of the small

Apartment, this suitcase has a smell to it. It was unlocked, and upon opening, investigators were shocked to find the body of another woman, her upper body was wrapped in a blanket and only her feet were visible. Her tiny body was contorted to fit in the suitcase, tied with a nylon rope, and her

Throat and neck bore fatal cuts from a sharp object. The cuts were so deep an investigator described the head as barely attached and dangling off. The body was swollen and was emitting a foul odor of decomposition. It’s estimated she had been dead for about a week.

Also within the apartment was a bloody knife, believed to be the murder weapon. The Unveiling of a Monster: In the aftermath of the gruesome discovery, the police examined the suspects’ digital footprint. The man was identified as a Rurik Jutting, and his cellphone was a pandora’s box that shocked them.

It held 2000 photos and videos, each more disturbing than the last. The images showed sadomasochistic acts of depravity, self-taken photos with different parts of his victim’s body and sexual organs, including a nearly severed head, but the most disturbing of which was a 20 minute video of him torturing one of the victims.

There was also a self-recorded video confessing to one of the women’s murder. Even some of the senior officers could not stomach watching this, and had to be excused from the case. There was no doubt in their minds that Rurik Jutting was a sick individual who must be brought to justice.

Victims: The First Victim Born in Cilacap, Indonesia, on 22 April 1991, Sumarti Ningsih, or as known affectionately as Alice. Alice was a young mother of a five-year-old son, she came to Hong Kong in 2011 to work as a domestic helper, which she did for two and a half years.

Domestic helpers in Hong Kong are often live at home family helpers, who take care of the house, cooking, cleaning, and other services. They are often from low-income families overseas, and through their work can send money back home to their families.

Alice was trying to pursue a different career, she had recently trained as a DJ and returned to Hong Kong on a tourist visa, she told her family she was seeking work as a DJ there. However, these ambitions led her to the red-light district, where she undoubtably ran into Rurik Jutting.

Her family were expecting her to fly back home on November 2nd, a day that she would unfortunately never make it to alive. The Second Victim: Seneng Mujiasih, known as Jesse Lorena in Hong Kong, was a 26-year-old woman from Muna Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia.

She first arrived in Hong Kong in 2006, working as a domestic helper. However, her work permit had expired, and she had overstayed her visa. Like Alice, she too found herself working in the red-light district, a world away from the life she had envisioned when she first set foot in Hong Kong.

The Man Behind the Monster Born into privilege, Rurik Jutting was a British banker who grew up in the leafy suburbs of Surrey. His father, Graham, was an engineer, and his mother, Helen, ran a nursery class. His early education was at the now-closed Wallop prep school, followed by Abberley Hall,

A prestigious boarding school in Worcestershire which cost $58,000 dollars annually. His maternal grandfather, a member of the British Royal Police Force in Hong Kong, had left the force amidst corruption charges and returned to the UK. As a backdrop, before the ICAC or the Independent Commission Against Corruption, was established in 1974.

The Royal Hong Kong police force were known to be quite corrupted, and unlike today, it was almost embedded within the culture to exchange money for favours. The Transformation: From being an angelic six-year-old at Wallop Preparatory School to a man accused of heinous crimes, Jutting’s life took a drastic turn.

A former classmate described him as “a bit of a strange chap” who “wasn’t very popular”. His academic journey led him to Peterhouse College, at Cambridge University, where he studied law and history, joined the rowing club, and served as the secretary of Clio, the undergraduate history society.

The High-Flying Banker: After graduating, Jutting embarked on a career in banking, first with Barclays and then Merrill Lynch in London. He quickly acquired a taste for the high life. It’s reported he was banished to Hong Kong due to an ethics violation, however they saved

His job in return for a transfer to Hong Kong. But this ironic twist was a reward disguised as punishment, because he reportedly earned over half a million US dollars a year working in Hong Kong. There is actually an acronym used amongst the locals here to describe such transfers,

FILTH, or, Fail in London, try Hong Kong. Rurik had resigned from his lucrative job at Merrill Lynch, just a few days before committing his first murder. The Downward Spiral: In Hong Kong, Jutting developed an obsession with hosting drug-fueled sex parties that lasted for days.

He was known to hire sex-workers regularly, and colleagues claimed that Jutting had been under ‘extreme pressure’, working 16-hour days before he resigned. He reportedly had an IQ of 137… and as the gravity of his crimes came to light the city was anticipating his trial.

In response to his arrest, his parents, who are now divorced, sold their home back in the UK and hired the best defense lawyers for him. The Tragic End of Alice: Alice, a 23-year-old woman, had encountered Jutting prior to the incident. She had previously been hired by him for sexual services in a hotel.

However, Jutting, was excessively rough, prompting Alice to offer a partial refund and leave early. Despite this, Jutting requested another meeting at his home on 25th October 2014, promising her a substantial sum of around $10,000 HKD, or 1,200 US. Initially, Alice refused, but eventually, she came around and accepted the offer.

In the early hours of 25 October 2014, Jutting brought Alice to his apartment in Wan Chai. Where he continued to abuse her for the next three days, brutally and violently. He punched her, used belts, sex toys, whips and more, on the third day he tied her hands

And asked her to kneel and lick the dirty toilet. While she was doing this, he slashed her throat from behind… but she was still alive. He then dragged her to the standing shower and continued to saw off her neck with his knife, until her head was left nearly dangling off.

After this he took a selfie with his phone and talked to himself, asking himself how he should deal with the aftermath of what he had just done, he contemplated committing suicide, or disposing of the body, and returning to the UK.

He recorded himself admitting how much enjoyed what he just did, the domination aspect, and abuse excited him. He said that he watched pornographic films, abused her… and he could only do this with the help of drugs and alcohol.

At some point, he wrapped, and stuffed her body in a suitcase, and placed it in his balcony… where it was found by police on Nov 1st. The Second Tragedy. Jesse Lorena the second victim was brutalized a few days after the first. Jesse worked at bars during the night, providing sexual services to customers.

Unlike Alice, Jesse Lorena had never crossed paths with Jutting before. After his arrest Jutting referred to Jesse as his ‘prey’ and nothing more. He showed no empathy or treated his victims with a semblance of humanity. October 31, 2014, Jutting purchased coloured ropes and adult toys from a sex shop, he also

Bought a hammer, ropes and sandpaper from a hardware shop. He filmed himself talking about how he would use these items. He said he hid two knives in his sofa, along with a condom and a rope he would use to gag.

That night he negotiated with Jesse Lorena at a bar in Wanchai to engage in sexual acts, sometime late at night, they made their way to his home. Around 3:25am she sent a text to her friend that, quote, “Something smells really bad, I want to get out of here”.

This was the last message she ever sent, and 20 minutes later the police arrived. It assumed what followed next, unfolded within this timeframe. At Juttings apartment Lorena was furious when she discovered the gag and yelled at him in

Indonesian, but Jutting lunged at her with his knife in hand, and told her to do exactly what he said. She put up a fight and continued to argue with him, that she would not do any of this nonsense, which was not a part of their agreement.

Jutting was furious with her non-compliance and attacked her, slitting her throat in the process. The Trial Begins: October 25, 2016, the trial of Rurik Jutting commenced with a jury of four women and five men, all middle-aged. As they sat through a grisly 20-minute clip on the second day, their discomfort was palpable.

They shifted in their seats, clenched their jaws, and sometimes averted their eyes. The jury was warned of the violent nature of the evidence they were about to witness, and many had asked to be excused, but even for those who agreed… they were not prepared for the sickening scenes of violence and torture.

The trial had a brief delay to allow the jury to regain their composure, and after a brief hiccup, the trial proceeded. The Horrors Unveiled: The court heard of the three days of torture and rape that Alice had endured. Quote, “I’ve never seen anyone that scared,” Jutting confessed in the footage.

He, spoke of his use of pliers, sex toys, and a belt in his attacks on Alice, and the sense of dominance that he found… “addictive”. Quote “I feel a bit sad because she was a good person, but I don’t really feel guilty,” he said on video.

The Dark Fantasies: Jutting’s dark fantasies were laid bare as he spoke of a desire to kidnap three teenage girls from Wycombe Abbey, a girls’ boarding school in High Wycombe. He also admitted that he felt more guilt over not being in the office to close a financing

Deal for a project, rather than over what he had done to Alice. As he prepared to hide Alice’s body in a suitcase, he said he questioned himself on whether he had a problem, given how excited he felt during the whole ordeal. The Judge This case was one of the most horrific murder

Cases to come before the court in Hong Kong, according to the judge, Justice Stuart-Moore. He further stated that given Jutting’s ‘sadistic and psychopathic traits’, he would pose a high risk of committing further acts of sexual violence. He declared that Jutting would be an ‘immense danger if he is ever given liberty beyond

The prison gates.’. He said there were insufficient superlatives in the English language to describe what he had done to Alice, and what he had in store for Lorena. What Jutting did was beyond belief given the way he was given ‘even possible start in life’.

The Final Verdict: 8 November 2016, Jutting was found guilty of two counts of murder… Life imprisonment with possibility of parole. The judge’s words echoed in the courtroom. He had only heard Jutting apologize once, and he did not believe it was genuine.

The evidence – the interrogation, the photos, the videos – painted a picture of a man who took pride in his horrific actions, showing no remorse. The fact that Jutting had tortured his first victim for three days before killing her, and then had the audacity to seek out his next ‘prey’, was horrifying.

The judge was aware that Jutting had used drugs to enhance his sexual experiences. He believed that the law should protect sex workers too, and therefore, a tough sentence was required for the violent behavior Jutting had exhibited towards them.

Despite having everything – a good home, a good job, a good background – Jutting had chosen a path of violence and brutality. Although the psychiatric report suggested that Jutting was unstable, the judge firmly believed that at the time of the crime, Jutting could control his killing impulses.

The defense team mentioned their plan to apply to transfer Jutting’s to the UK, whey he may face re-sentencing…, hoping that he would obtain more leniency there. In response, the judge stated that he would send his opinion to the UK judicial system,

And suggested that in the UK, Jutting would likely receive a life sentence with no parole. Which ironically would be harsher, that what he is allowed to impose under Hong Kong law. Aftermath Rurik Jutting was sent to the maximum-security

Stanley prison to serve out his life sentence, where he is up for parole after 20 years at the discretion of the Long-term Prison Sentences Review Board. August 2018, Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal rejected Rurkik Juttings appeal after just 8 minutes of deliberation Conclusion

    1. He had such a fortunate upbringing, and he’s preying on the less fortunate. What a monster…Blaming his actions on drugs and stress from work? Taking drugs was his choice and there are so many other ways to deal with stress! 😡

      RIP Alice & Jesse Lorena

    2. This was beyond gruesome. There's simply NO EXCUSE for his actions: stress, drug use to blame reallllllly 🤷🏾‍♀️⁉️ He was given every opportunity needed to be fortuitous yet this is who he obviously wanted to be 🤯
