[682] This cycle bridge was opened in 2014. More information in the blog post: https://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/?p=9455
This cycle bridge in the town of Heerhugowaard, in the province of North-Holland, was built to create a conflict-free access to the railway station… from a new neighbourhood. Due to the limited space and a canal that also needed to be crossed, the bridge became very curved.
An in-situ concrete structure made it possible to create a low-maintenance bridge suited for this tight location. Only the section that crosses the road was pre-cast, so the road did not need to be closed for too long. The curved bridge was named De Krul meaning the curl… a name giving competition.
It offers a great view over the flat countryside. The bridge is for both cycling and walking. But you can take a shortcut when you walk. The stairs can be used by people and their pets. Although some prefer to carry their dogs on their bicycles.
The bridge is partly standing in the water it crosses. Thanks to the hairpin bends the access ramps become longer and less steep. Making the bridge accessible for people of all ages… and of all abilities. The railing is made out of fine steel tubes, making it possible to see through them,
But which offer a safe barrier. Directly under the handrail LED lighting is integrated. The concrete bridge is slender and elegantly curved. It makes it possible to cross the busy N242 road… in a comfortable way when you walk or cycle.

The Netherlands is amazing! 👍
What is this utopia?
In the USA you would need a tall chain-link fence(or complete covering) across the length of the bridge, so people don't toss bricks, rocks or other objects onto the passing traffic below, or commit suicide by jumping off.
Heerhugowaard is a very wonderful place in North Holland.
I admire grandma, her and her hand pedals.
Watch grandma rock up in her wheelchair rip her shirt off and expose the most eloquent and shaped arms you've ever seen.
She also brought brownies
drove underneeth that bridge dozens of times, but I never noticed it. I'm seeing it here for the first time.
