Australian police have charged a 45-year-old man with “aggravated assault” for allegedly binding three young Indigenous children with cable ties after they swam in a pool without permission.
Social media images appeared to show the tearful children – a six-year-old girl and two boys aged seven and eight – with their hands tied together outside a home in Broome, Western Australia, during the incident.
One video on social media, widely broadcast by Australian media, showed locals shouting at a white man on the property, demanding in vain that he release the two youngest children after the eight-year-old had already fled.
The treatment of Indigenous children is particularly sensitive in Australia.
Thousands of Indigenous children were taken from their families and put into foster care with white families or institutions under assimilation policies that continued into the early 1970s.

135 yesterday police received a call from a uh a person in a neighboring property to an address in Cable Beach in broom who advised us that there were some children uh swimming in an unoccupied uh pool uh at an address in Cable Beach about 10 minutes later uh
Police received a call from a a male person who will say is the 45y old male person that’s subsequently been charged uh that he had restrained three children for causing damage at that location in the backyard uh police attended and obviously located three children uh two children of that time
One had left uh that had been cable tied uh at that premises so investigations proceeded uh the 45y old man was taken into custody um and taken to Brewing police station where investigations uh were undertaken he was subsequently charged with three counts with aggravated common assault
