Cycling around Albania and Montenegro – Episode 2 (May 2018) – Day 2: Tirana to Shkoder by bike – Exploring Albania by bike

Recently I have just completed my 500km cycling trip around Albania and Montenegro. Cycling outside the EU is absolutely a lifetime experience that you will never forget!

The second day was actually a 100km journey by bike from Tirana to Shkoder. Don’t know why many people have bad impression and even feel scared of Albania, but after a whole day cycling 100km to the north of Albania, I love this country more and more … Initially, when riding in the EU, I never ever had such experience like people waving at and cheering for me on the street, an old man stopped his bike to shake hands with me, kids running after my bike trying their best to speak English, or a random guy offering me free drinks when I was resting at a gas station. You will never have these experience in the UK, never ever !!!

Cycling in AL is actually really fun, it’s just a bit different, but not that dangerous like people often say! In Albania, normally people don’t give way, even at the roundabout when everyone just tries their best to enter and exit, that’s why they have police everywhere to direct the traffic all the time in the capital! Moreover, people overtake crazily and press the horn a lot, some old men and ladies riding a bike on the opposite and there are even some guys walking on the motorway! Despite the fact that it’s so different compared to the EU countries, cycling in Albania is absolutely very safe !!!

Tomorrow I’m heading to Bar, which is a coastal city in Montenegro and the total distance will be around 50km, which is half of the distance that I’ve done today. Good night and see you in the next episodes!

Special thanks to Estela Eliazi, Arlind Shazi, Our Way Hostel and Peja Grill Restaurant !!!
