A visit to historic Helsingør is the perfect day trip when visiting Copenhagen! This small town is replete with cobblestone streets, Shakespearean lore, and more medieval history than you’d ever thought possible in such a small space.
Helsingør is located roughly 45 minutes due north by train from the Danish capital at the northeast corner of the island of Zealand, facing the mighty North Sea and the expansive Øresund, seperating the city from the neighbouring Swedish city of Helsingborg (a short 20 minute ferry ride away).
On this wonderful little day trip to Helsingør, I admired the town’s stunning medieval and Renaissance architecture (most dating back to the 15th century), including its stunning Rådhus (town hall) and the Sankt Olai Domkirke (St. Olaf’s Church). I also took in some great views of the famous Hamlet Castle (Kronborg, in Danish) which has stood guard over the entrance of the sound for centuries. The city is also home to a number of other attractions, including the Danish Maritime Museum, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, and the Helsingor Market. Helsingør is also a great place to enjoy the outdoors, with its beautiful beaches, hiking trails, and bike paths.
After my sightseeing in this charming Danish city, I hop on the evening ferry across the sound and into Sweden.
