Olav Kooij won the opening stage of Paris-Nice by a hair’s breadth from Mads Pedersen on Sunday when the 158km hilly run round Les Mureaux came down to a mass sprint.

Set and a good strong start to the day by visma Lisa bike and Matel Jensson uh yeah I mean there was a key corner at uh k140 before the bonus Sprint and yeah it wasn’t my intention before the stage to go for the bonus seconds I thought for sure it’d be uh Primos and and Remco up there but yeah Mick did a super good job into the
Corner and I was like uh basically third or fourth in the corner and yeah uh I think quick up did a little bit of a lead out for it and I was there so I I didn’t look back and I just went for it and yeah I was actually surprised
That uh I got it and well you’ve got GC Ambitions this week so good news for you but then from there the race remain chaotic and we thought Remco might go off again just talk Us in from that point if you can yeah it was Chic uh
Yeah basically Remco wanted to to keep going but uh we still had W for the Sprint so I wasn’t going to pull with him and yeah um basically it all came and I I had no part in the lead out I can’t take any responsibility for Olaf’s
Win I was two Van Dyke brothers did a super good job and yeah they had a super clear playing with the roundabouts in the final and it looked like ol entered in perfect position I almost kind of got in their way a bit at the end but then
Uh yeah it looked like he looked like he won so it was a good day and it looks as though it’s going to be an aggressive week based on what we saw with Remco and roit and everyone’s going to be trying to get seconds where they [Laughter]

Sprints this one was super demanding you must be very pleased with yourself yeah I think uh we knew it would be hard but uh yeah we definitely wanted to go to go for it and uh yeah I was in good position thanks to the guys uh yeah and
Then I had to suffer my my way up the of the climbs and uh yeah then we knew we would would be fighting for the win here and uh yeah in the end uh it was a really hard Sprint but really happy to to take the win and you beat Mr
Invincible in France Matt Pon especially on this type of finish that must be a a huge satisfaction yeah I think uh yeah we knew that that this finish really suits him and uh he has been going really well this season so uh yeah last year we also had some some nice battles
In the Sprint here so uh yeah this year again and uh yeah really happy that I was able to win not your first Victory on PES you you won last year but uh still it’s a great to to win a well Tour stage yeah definitely I mean uh yeah
Last year’s victory was was really nice so I was happy to to come back again this year and uh yeah really uh to nice to get a get a win already and there’s a bonus uh you’ll get the Jersey the the yellow Jersey on on your shoulders for
Tomorrow and you could actually keep it for several days yeah I think tomorrow should should be another Sprint so yeah really really nice to to ride in that uh in that Jersey and uh yeah we’ll keep uh keep uh going every day and try to to do the best we can congratulations thank
