Hi guys my name is Sophie I’m the group Marketing Manager for syamore and this is my journey from Rookie to Ryder [Applause] When you R it up the engine RS much more smoo than a small tile clutch exactly the same as 10 welcome back to episode two of the Sycamore Rook Rider series in episode one you saw Sophie and David embark on their journey of learning how to ride a motorcycle with BMW Rider training
Starting out by learning the basics of these smaller bikes at BMW Rider training but now it’s the time you’ve all been waiting for it’s time for them to get on the largest 750 cc motorcycles but before doing so let’s quickly recap on what we saw in episode One so after some fantastic efforts from both Sophie and David on day one it was now finally time for them to meet the rest of the instructing team and finally have a go on the F750 GS Bikes so doors are 750s we’ll sort of add more detail to it as we go through through the day as it becomes appropriate to what we’re doing yeah but what we’ll do now is um go over to the pad and start riding bikes cool you both excited buzzing Sophie and David’s instructor on
Day three was Dennis and because Dennis was a nice kind and caring instructor he decided to let them have 10 minutes on the g310r bikes just to get back into the swing of riding a motorcycle before finally taking that leap up to the exciting and more powerful 750cc motorcycles So after a quick self familiarization session on the g310 RS Dennis got Sophie and David to bring the bikes back in park up and it was time to get ready to try the 750s but first of all let’s talk about the theory test with Ian so learning to ride a motorcycle
There are four stages to this um stage one is Theory test um which can be done before or after the CBT but if you’re doing an intensive course theory test need to be done first then there’s CBT module one test and module two test so let me go into more detail the theory
Test has to be done by anybody adding a category to their license um it’s a hourish test with a series of questions and some video clips um and it’s really important when you book that that you study for it um especially if if you already drive to study and understand
What they’re after in the video clip because they’re after you to identify a developing Hazard rather than a potential Hazard and there is a key difference between the two once you’ve got your theory test and your driving license that you’ve already got be that a provisional or full car license you
Then attend the school um and from that point onwards we can cover all of the rest so the CBT as mentioned we do our CBT over two days so the first two days of a course course is the CBT subject matter five elements to a CBT um is about getting
You basic Road skills it’s very basic structure of a course we take two days to do that to really embed um some level of advanced principles at a basic level for CPT um we’re also embedding the thought process and the skill set to be able to ride a larger
Bike so with that quick familiar ization session out the way it was now time to get fully kitted and ready to go on the F750 GS bikes the most exciting step of the way so far without a doubt for both Sophie and David sound cool don’t
It and after a quick check of the security of Sophie’s helmet they were ready to take on the BMW F750 GS recognize that it’s warm and dro the revs point at which it drops the revs is usually the point at which you’re just looking for the bik points so with
Dennis giving them close instructions and watching every step of the way Sophie and David finally hopped on to the F750 gs’s to experience more power and a bigger bike to handle the bike can’t do anything the first step was almost like a flashback to the very Basics just
Getting into grip with the different clutch control and bite point on this larger more powerful bike luckily Dennis was on hand to help David first and following that then Sophie Dennis had every confidence in Sophie and David and it certainly showed with their performance as they got to
Grits with this really easily The Next Step was to pick up the skills that they’d learn on 310r and transfer those to the larger F750 bike before finally taking them out on the roads so what we’re going to do now is we’re going to get both bikes out we going to
Start riding around the pad uh half the PTY the first exercise was a simple ride around the pad with use of the cones as well to get used to handling the larger weight of the F750 G of the corns I’m going to start moving the corns About And would you look at that Sophie and David have got the hang of it pretty much immediately riding round the pad and also practicing coming to a stop and handling the weight transfer of that larger and heavier bike Stop on the 310 you just stop yes it’s that momentum of me going forward it almost unsets my balance a little bit that’s it you that’s what this start stop process is just about getting used to the feel of the bike get used to the different dynamics of the bike with a
Few stumbles along the way Sophie and David finally accomplished getting to grips with the basic controls and handling of the larger 750 GS and it was time to have a quick reflect with Dennis before heading back to the classroom to finish off the rest of day
Three we can ride a bike this is just transferring that control technique to the bigger bike learning to ride a motorcycle really is full of high and lows there’s some things that you just don’t take to as well they might seem so much harder and again David and I didn’t
Share those same things throughout this journey things that sometimes David found really easy I found really hard and vice versa so it really is unique to an individual a sort of experience that until you’re in it you can’t really understand what you’re going to be good
At what might be more difficult for you it’s a real eye openening experience and it teaches you a lot about you as a person in overcoming fear and celebrating success but also how you deal with those days where it just didn’t quite go your way and with that day three came to an
End Sophie and David had finally stepped up to the F7 50 gs and learn to handle a heavier bike a more powerful bike and get ready for finally hitting the road to practice true Road riding which was soon to Come it was day six of David and Sophie’s rookie to Rider Journey unfortunately we were unable to film anything on day four and 5 as Sophie and David spent a bit of time out on the road with Dennis and also took part in their CBT test which they passed first [Applause]
Time with smiles on their faces and Spirits running High Sophie and David were ready to tackle the final dat of learning before the big test day and this entailed getting on the 750s again and finally hitting the roadway at the front of the rookie to ride a premises to practice swerving exercises and
Advance control of the larger motorcycles but first as always ways it was time for a quick warm up on the pad and after all that riding how hard could it be With that quick practice on the pad and the weaving exercise over Sophie and David had leared how to go through the cones with the larger bike and control the speed and also control stopping as well and now it was finally time to exit the pad and hit the roadway outside of
The training center to pick up the pace a bit and learn these Maneuvers just like they’re out on the open roads put some PS out I want you to ride through the Middle after a quick break back at the rookie to ryer main Center Sophie and David went back outside got suited and booted and hopped back on the F750 GS bikes ready to hit the roadway outside of the training center with Dennis and learn some higher speed Maneuvers
Picking up the pace and doing things like swerving exercises and emergency stops ahead of the very fast approaching main test Day first on the list was the key and all important straight line emergency stop exercise allowing both Sophie and David to learn how to bring their motorcycle to a fast controlled stop
Ahead of doing their test first up was David oh a slight overshoot there from David but not to worry that’s exactly why they’re practicing it let’s see how Sophie does certainly not a bad first attempt from both of them but unfortunately this wouldn’t cut it for the test so it’s time to spin around and give it another
Go as smooth as butter that was an absolutely perfect stop from David but now the question was could Sophie nail it that well as Well I’m and the answer to that is yes a fantastic emergency stop there from Sophie so looks like they’re ready for the test surely soon next up was the avoidance exercise where Sophie and David to Swerve two cones aiming to avoid them aiming to avoid them David not hit Them a perfect avoidance there from Sophie putting more pressure on David for the second Attempt that’s more like it David and then finally for Sophie’s last attempt before getting Dennis’s approval and after that fantastic avoidance from Sophie it was time for a quick celebr ation before the realization set in that module 2 test a was just around the Corner the final stage then is the module 2 ride um and this essentially is you demonstrating to The Examiner that you have the skill set and understanding to be able to ride commiserate to your vulnerability as a motorcyclist um therefore making observations to check for traffic around you before you make
Changes to your riding um to travel at the appropriate speed for the road conditions and leaving separate enough gaps for you and the vehicles around you so you’re really you’re not trying to prove anything apart from keep yourself alive keep yourself safe we’ll go through the hoops and hurdles of that
With you but what we’re trying to do here is teach you to ride a motorcycle properly and safely and that’s the essence of our training courses it’s a riding course a road safety based riding course with tests it’s not the other way around the principle here is that we’ll
Teach you how to ride a motorcycle safely and effectively that you can carry those skills all the way through your riding demonstrate that to another Rider following you the examiner and he will give you your motorcycle license time Sophie and David had been waiting for the most had finally come that was
Time to hop on the F750 GS bites with Dennis and head over to the test center to complete the final leg of this rookie to ride a Journey all they had to do now was demonstrate good understanding of all of those skills they’d learn over the past 6 days and they would have
Their motorcycle Licenses as they pulled into the test center nerves were of course running high but they were also super excited to get back out of the other side of the test center hope having passed their tests it now was test time and all it came down to was demonstrating the
Skills that they learn over the past 6 days but here’s a quick recap on those six Days Welcome back viewers to the car and with me Harry the cameraman for this entire rookie terer series first off how fun has it been watching Sophie and David learn how to ride a motorcycle and then it went forwards and to the side of I could stop it I’ve really enjoyed filming their
Journey so far um I’m currently on the A14 driving back to Peterborough from the rookie to Rider Center I left Sophie and David at the test center a few hours ago ready to do their final step of the motorcycle test and I should get a phone call from them any minute now hopefully
To say that they’ve passed that’s what we’d like so I’m just going to sit tight and wait for said phone call I know they’ll have passed they will have passed I’ve got every confidence in them oh here it is phone call hello Sophie now let’s waste no time tell me the
News you’re never going to guess what we we pass well oh I’m so TR for you mate we’re buzzing I’m not surprised absolutely buzzing Gus just got back as well and we were like 10 minutes apart but um yeah we just got back and we both got our pass certificate so hash make
Life a ride here we go oh yeah I bet you can’t wait to get out on the roads I know we’ve got a ride back with um Dennis now back to the school and um then yeah it’ll be next time we get on a bike we be with the instructor and we’ll
Be legit I know oh it’s so excited I’m so proud of you well done when we’re back and yeah we’ll be back with two passic good cool I’ll see you later on then take care riding back thanks take care bye oh I knew they’d do it I’m so proud
Of them I’m so so pleased for them well done well time to get back to peterb and the next time you’ll see them they’ll be fully qualified running the motorcycles a few months after passing her test Sophie thought she’d make a trip back to BMW BR training to meet up with Ian have
A chat about how she was getting on out on the open road and also run through what that test day was actually like so as part of the the 7-Day course we book slots to practice the module one and the test center so we start the practice here and then we enhance that
Practice by going to the test center you take your mob one test at to actually feel the emotion of doing the same things there and it because the environment is different it feels very different but what it gives you is that confidence that you can deliver those
Skills at the test center when your test comes up in a day or two later as silly as it sounds it is there is a difference between doing it here and doing it at the test center there’s not many environments with tests where you can actually rep replicate the test
Environment and do it beforehand so it does definitely give you that confidence of I know where the examiner is going to be stood I know where I’m going to start as much as it is near enough identical to this you just can’t replicate that full environment and the feeling of
Going to a test center a lot of human beings are the same if you’ve been somewhere before something’s familiar you know where it is it all seems a little bit easier on the day there’s not that daunting kind of process especially when it is a test center here kind of
Feels safe environment at the training school but the second you arrive official there is that daunting kind of feeling so to know that you’ve been there before even seeing where you enter they say about the gate that opens kind of what feels like the Gate of Doom when
You first arrive there when it closes yeah when it closes behind you and you hear the clunk you’re um you riding on there knowing that the next time you come on there you’ll be doing your test but you know where it is that you’re starting where it is that you’re going
To park where you’re going to begin the Maneuvers and that familiarity helps gives confidence with it much as though we may not like the ex exercises the inherent confidence that it gives you that you’ve been there and seen it and had time to practice there just takes
Away a lot of the sort of edginess of it and means that when you do go for your test you’re less daunted by it in reality um and it it just really helps so it was fair to say that overall it had been an emotional but very very
Exciting Journey for both Sophie and David with Ian and the crew at being Rider training learning how to ride a motorcycle as this Series has hopefully demonstrated Ian and his team at BMW Rider training have absolutely fantastic methods of teaching anybody of any ability how to ride a motorcycle safely
With full competence and confidence on today’s roads and of course understanding their vulnerability as a road user on a motorcycle on the modern roads since leaving BMW Rider training and spending many hours out on the different demonstrated bikes we have here at Sycamore motorad Sophie and
David have had nothing but great fun out on the motorcycles they’ve clocked up many hours of riding and many exciting miles of making life a ride and this will definitely be a skill they will now keep for life and enjoy for every single day of having It we hope you’ve enjoyed this video series of David and Sophie’s journey through from Rookie to Ryder um and understand a bit more about the process involved in gaining a full motorcycle license here at BMW Rider training we have a different series of fleets to most other schools you saw from David
And Sophie’s Journey that we start on the 310 we have the 310r in low um sort of seats and the 310 GS for people who are longer in the leg in the same way with the 750 we have low sh chass versions and higher chassis versions so
We can cater for people of all sizes through this training um but it takes somebody from zero as you see from David and Sophie no skills whatsoever at the beginning and through to the end gaining their full motorcycle license it is a big Journey if you want to find out more
About it do speak to David and Sophie ask for their personal experience with it because it’s great to get that first person view there’s more detail on our website BMW rra.com and more videos on there about the CBT the module one and module 2 so that’s BMW rra.com to find out More
