Good afternoon everyone my name is mugda leele and I’m host for the talk which is hosted by the tx.in Vertical Adventure Center we are running this series only one theme and this is the second wave of the series and today is the 12th talk in this
Series The Talk is focus on only funding your patent filing entrepreneur perspective and pointers and our speaker for today is an entrepreneur from The Venture Center ecosystem Dr chinai Kar so welcome chinmai to the session and let me briefly introduce you chimma is the founder of visen craft Labs private
Limited a metch startup company which is based in Pune and U incubated at Venture Center he’s an accomplished researcher with PhD in materials physics from University at lip Germany and more than 30 peer reviewed Publications to his credit he has formerly worked at liit Institute F overlash and M fizer room
And R University at bosum Germany and he has also worked as R&D manager at application support center or Lian bers coting India private limited chinma has over 15 years of specialized experience in materials development and service surface coating solution with this brief introduction welcome chin to the session and over to
You yeah uh good afternoon uh thank you mugda uh thank you venture center team for a kind introduction and uh allowing me to present our experience with respect to funding our patent applications um shall I share my screen already yeah yeah you can go ahead
Okay so uh is it full screen mode yes it is full screen mode okay great yeah so um good afternoon everyone uh today I would like to give you a perspective on uh funding our patent applications uh and would like to provide you some tips and pointers in applying to certain
Grants uh from different programs government programs as well as some uh State programs um I would like to keep this more interactive so if you have any questions uh please drop it in the chat box I would be happy to take it uh later uh as time
Permits uh so first of all this is going to be the outline of the talk uh I would like to briefly highlight the timeline and important dates uh while filing these applications and then uh I would like to focus on three different programs uh that are I would say we have had
Experience with these three programs uh first of all uh with respect to the timeline um probably you you’re already aware of these timelines um very I would say very uh comfortably uh first of all most of you might have filed applications or probably are are on the
Verge of filing applications so in this case you uh preferentially have an application that is filed in uh your Regional country uh in this case it would be India for example and uh you have a chance of filing a an application which is a provisional application then
You would get a 12 month window wherein you can file your complete disclosure along with your PCT filing with the PCT filing you have an you have a route to file uh National phase applications in multiple countries with the stipulated window of 30 months uh this is already
Known from wipo I think most of you are already aware of this timeline I just wanted to highlight this because probably at a later point in the talk we would like to come back to this time Point uh in order to file these applications to certain programs uh so yeah more importantly uh
Here it is uh here here it is absolutely important that you plan your uh funding uh early in advance how you are going to budget for these expenses so at the time of your filing uh may it be your uh complete disclosure or provisional disclosure first of all you will need to
File official fee as well as service fee for example if someone is helping you to draft a patent application then there will be a service fee uh at month 12 you will of course have uh again an official fee uh this will be a patent application
Fee in India as well as uh the PCT application fee uh followed by the service fee U apart from that when we actually proceed in Timeline at around 30 months the stipulated window to actually file National feas applications you again will have to pay official fees in the respective countries uh followed
By in certain cases so if you if you’re for example filing your application in Japan China Korea then you would require to have your application or your uh your closure translated in the local language so these translation expenses are also uh considerable in that case you will have
To budget for those expenses as well uh followed by again service free so in many cases uh the Indian patent firm uh usually has an associate in um the country of uh filing for example you’re filing in Europe then or in the US there would be an associate firm that will be
Filing your application on behalf of you uh through a patent agent in India in that case you will have to pay a service fee to this uh associate patent agent as well so there are multiple at multiple level you have to budget some expenses so how do you actually uh account for or
Possibly budget for these expenses is uh I would say first of all get quotations uh through uh multiple uh patent firms in terms of understanding the entire budget requirement Within These 30 months or possibly at a later stage after 30 months as well that would give
You a ballp figure in terms of how much your one application is going to cost you then you can divide it into sections in terms of what would be the funding amount required in the early stage at as compared to later stage when you enter the national
Feas uh yeah so the first part that I would like to talk about is the is the program from Venture Center uh specifically from uh with the support of nbm this is the program available for two different categories one is an academic inventor in this case uh your
Official fee as well as service fee uh for this you will be able to you will be supported by uh this program uh the details are available on Venture Center website and you are always welcome to connect with Venture Center website and Venture center team in order to take
Your application forward in a similar manner there are uh funding schemes available for startups as well uh in this case Indian patent filing as well as PCT filing uh and again you would be uh you are welcome to connect with Venture center team for this specific scheme uh moving on uh the more
Important program I would say is Bak path program this is from Bak most of you probably are aware of this program uh in this case we fortunately uh have been funded through this program uh what you have to do in this case is first of all go through the
Scheme document uh on right hand side you will see the basic scheme document and the options that are available for funding your patent in this case the first option uh will only fund your complete IND patent filing uh the option two will actually support you for complete Indian patent filing as well as
Uh filing into three different countries and possibly the most lucrative option for most of us would be actually complete filing in India as well as PCT filing followed by national phase applications so we were kind of successful in actually putting us our application through option number three
Now how did did we actually go about it first of all uh what you have to do is there is an application form that you have to fill followed by there is a detailed application which needs to be submitted through the online portal uh The Next Step actually involves uh
Additional information which from time to time uh B requests you to provide as you might know these B programs typically have uh in total about six to eight months of scrutiny and evaluation so during this time your application is is scrutinized by the reviewers and you will get questions uh
Intermittently uh the final step in this case is basically the presentation in front of the IP and Technology advisory committee if you’re successful in this presentation uh they will take your application forward for Grant or sanction of the yeah so the first step essentially a very simple form this is onepage form as
You can see on the screen you need to fill this out and send it to the address given on the website and then basically you will get a response from them uh response from Barak to to uh actually submit an application through the online portal so once you get uh this response
For completing the detailed application one specific link will be created in your B account through which you can log to your account and actually start submitting or start preparing the application as we usually do for our big or uh SB uh proposals it’s kind of a similar type of
Portal through which you uh prepare your application this specific detailed proposal involves multiple aspects so specifically speaking uh what I would like to highlight here is uh I would rather request you to treat this application as an opportunity to provide as comprehensive information as possible with respect to your technology novelty
Business opportunity and so on uh the the important part here is uh there would be designated information uh space available but above and beyond that there will be possibility of submitting some annexures so uh in this case what we had done was submitting an extra documents uh in in
The allocated locations which will allow the committee or allow the reviewers to review our application in a detailed manner uh in this case the best way will be to provide details of your invention very thorough details with respect to novelty inventiveness non obviousness so in this case the uh what what approach
We followed was uh creating a PPT and actually uh uh I would say uh Slide by slide explain your novelty inventiveness and non-obviousness provide as many references as many literature references as possible to support your justification for novelty uh the next part is actually providing details of uh
Your problem statement or what problem your technology is addressing try to highlight the magnitude of the problem uh possibly in certain cases if you have some case studies or uh relevant uh material that has been prepared for your big application or SB application you might be able to take pins from that uh
Apart from that the uh one of the most important factor is patentability analysis or The Knockout search reports so this can be done uh through for example in in our case uh it was done through IP face in Venture Center but then then above and beyond that I think if your application is
Going to be filed by uh some of your uh IP firms then you can also ask them to prepare uh a separate patentability analysis and knockout search reports which can be submitted to your through your application uh the next part will be the details of your experimental results and evidences
So in this case what we had done was elaborate uh kind of summary of our entire product development part as well as uh how we have developed our technology from TRL level one to for example TRL level uh in this case we were supporting this with
Lot a lot of data in our case we also had an animal study so we also submitted data about the animal study all your invitro work probably there might be some work that is related to mechanical testing and so on that also can be submitted uh it should basically
Uh highlight that your technology is is validated as well as it has got a novelty so whatever is required from this justification point of view you are free to uh prepare this document or entire I would say this entire uh document can be just one uh PowerPoint
Presentation which you can submit uh the next important part was actually the rational and justification for filing PCT application or national phase application uh in this case uh for National phase applications for example you would like to file an application in the US or in Europe uh the important
Part is why do you want to file an application in the respective country the committee will ask you to provide a very strong response in terms of your rational so I would recommend that try to put in uh a story or try to put in a full uh explanation in terms of your
Justification uh if you have any supporting data uh for example you probably interacting with some Partners in those respective countries or you have some customers or probably you may have some vendors contract manufacturers and so on so uh if you have any correspondence or if you have some M you
Have some cont contracts uh I would say just highlight it at this stage or if possible also give a snapshot of this contract or provide this as a supporting data from commercialization strategy standpoint uh I would also recommend you to include regulatory strategy uh those of you of course are from metch startup
So I’m I’m presuming most of you are from metch startup in that case because this is a bra program so in that case case uh I would say that uh also give the plan for regulatory strategy uh apart from this I would also recommend you to add Market survey and
Market opportunity in those respective countries this entire part can probably be also uh be part of this justification that you are providing for National phase application uh in our case what had happened was uh when we actually submitt application for B math program uh we already had received a fear response for
Indian patent application uh rather we had received Fe for our Indian patent application and then what uh what we were what we were planning to do is actually the Fe response itself was submitted to byra in order to provide that how we have provided justification for each of the objections uh this also
Kind of creates a trust factor in in terms of how you’re going to address this at a later stage uh if for example your patent is already granted in India uh it would be fantastic in that case you can just affix a copy of your patent application uh the next step in this
Case as I mentioned before is actually uh once your application or detailed application is submitted to BU the the reviewers will review your application and if they find any uh discrepancy or if they find any uh misalignment uh if they need further information they will come back to you in terms of requesting
For further information so I’m presuming in for example in our case what had happened is I we had already submitted PCT filing uh so the PCT application was submitted to byra uh along with PCT we also had received ISR so that is international search report uh in this
Case uh we had it’s an optional uh part as you may know that whether to submit a response to ISR so we had not submitted response to ISR but what we had done was we actually had drafted the response for ISR and uh once these queries came from braak we actually submitted this
Response uh to ISR to braak in order to justify that uh any of these objections how they can be addressed similarly for example as I mentioned if the Fe is available then submit the copy of f as well as your response to F uh the next
Part is as I mentioned in the earlier Slide the most important part in the entire application is rational and justification for National phase filing uh with any additional information as I mentioned earlier if you have M contracts agreements collaborations uh if you have Lois anything uh supplement your application
With with all these details so that it becomes available for the reviewer to immediately review these documents uh in the meantime since this entire process takes a while uh if you have gathered any additional experimental data uh you are free to even submit that additional
Experimental data as and when B is uh is coming back to you for additional uh details so use this opportunity to provide as much information as possible if you don’t have that information available during your submission part so the if there are three or four months that have passed whatever information
That you have gathered new uh you can always submit that part um yeah the next part is the presentation this is a usual bya presentation there would be a committee uh you would need to sub prepare your presentation uh for about 8 to 10 minutes followed by question answers uh
Uh the the template is very standard um as for any of the funding schemes so first of all you need to highlight your technology novelty inventiveness your problem statement um if you have any updates with your with respect to your indent pattern application so fortunately what had happened was uh once our
Presentation was actually scheduled uh just prior to that about 3 weeks or four weeks before our indan patent uh application was granted so that kind of served uh I mean that was very useful in our case because we were able to demonstrate that Indian patent has already been granted now we would like
To go ahead and apply or rather file applications into certain countries of our interest um yeah as I mentioned in the in the due course of time if there are any updates regarding your collaboration M highlight that during your presentation as well um any early sales
That you might have done you might want to add that part as well what they would uh they would like to see is the strong justification uh for filing in those respective countries this will involve the market opportunity your size of the market uh if there are any patents that
Overlap your application anything in that sense you just need to highlight that if you’re filing a national phase application you want to make sure that for that spefic specific country you’re taking care of it so as for example you’re taking care of most of the things
In India you would like to take care most of the things in those respective countries as well and what are your strategies for those applications um then uh as I mentioned in the earlier slides as well if you have already received any regulatory clearance in India or in any other
Countries if you have filed anything uh please submit that part or present this part part during the presentation uh process as well uh apart from this if you I mean looking at this list if you feel that this is something that is important above and beyond that uh you
Are always uh free to kind of add that as a supplementary part to your presentation the next part is uh there is a scheme from Maharashtra State Innovation Society uh there are multiple programs from Maharashtra State Innovation Society uh probably you you’re already aware with some of them uh so there are there
Are three programs that are probably of relevance in this case so I’m not going to talk about uh trademark design and copyright but then uh domestic patent application uh International patent application and post Grant application this is more like an reimbursement so we had submitted our application through uh
IPR program uh or rather IPA in this case IPA program uh in this case what you need to do is there is an online portal uh you need to submit an application through this online portal uh and then uh make sure that there is a
There is a uh I would say processing fee that you have that uh processing fee that is incurred for processing your application so you have to pay that fee and then your pay then your application is evaluated through the committee in Maharashtra State Innovation Society uh
So for all these three programs the the process is very much similar there is an application form uh and you can upload some supporting documents the next part is the application is reviewed uh and The Knockout search report is prepared and then uh they may request for any additional
Information uh just like B program uh first of all I would say that in this case you may provide all the details that are available with you uh if you have filed PCT application if you have already received F if you have already filed for f response may want to submit
All these details in the application form itself uh there is I would say less space available but then uh in again similar to braak uh whenever you have the possibility of uploading information use it for providing annexures uh one important part is again ISR since you might be wanting to submit your
Application for National phase application in that case ISR becomes uh quite crucial uh the next part or the next step in this application is your application is forwarded to an associate patent firm uh they evaluate an application and they actually carry out a knockout search report so uh through
This knockout search report they provide you with whether your uh patent or your application is has novelty and in that case the application is processed or is approved uh for Grant uh from Ms inss so in that case this patent firm or the associate patent firm is providing a
Formal response to Maharashtra State Innovation society and then they take the final call in terms of funding your application uh remember that this is going to be a part funding so uh there is a cap so I think the most uh the the maximum funding available through this
Program is 10 lakhs and the rest of it will be will be borne by the applicant in this case this will be more like a 8020 kind of a program so 80% part will be supported by Maharashtra State Innovation society and the 20% part will
Have to be supported by you uh in this case uh our experience is that uh for typically two countries you will be able to file National phase application through this program so if you want to file for 10 countries uh you may just want to file to uh to rather consider
Two countries for for this specific program um yeah so the last part in this case is basically any additional information that might be requested from this associate IP firm or Ms inss uh as and when required uh they would come back to you and you may uh want to submit relevant information relevant
Documents uh through the online portal or over email so this is I would say a similar program however uh the the process is slightly different compared to Barak path program uh but in general I would say that one needs to divide uh your entire geography in different
Segments in order to kind of utilize the maximum through such programs uh so just for the purpose of clarity I have just added a timeline here so uh for example let’s say today you file a provisional application uh and in this case you might be supported
Through big scheme or pray scheme or any of any of these schemes uh this will be so for example the patent for provisional application might be covered through such grants The Next Step that you may want to do is during uh filing today and the upcoming 12 months is submit an
Application to support the complete disclosure or PCT filing because again this is going to be an expense that will incur in the next 12 months so submit an application in advance so that the funding will be available with within this 12 month window once this PCT application is submitted or the complete
Disclosure is filed you have a little extra time about 18 months to uh submit your National phase application so Within These 18 months I would say that uh plan well and submit applications for programs like Barak paath or MSS or any other relevant program that kind of supports your patent filing in National
Phase application process so uh I would say that right after 12 months submit an application to these programs that will possibly help you to kind of navigate through this entire funding part because it takes time to actually realize or possibly get a grant letter at the end
Of the day for filing these applications apart from that there are translations that need to be carried out and these translations also take time so about given take about two weeks to uh four weeks should be given for translations you were to file something at month3
Then you need to account for those many months or those many weeks uh in order to make sure that application is filed in for example in Japan or in China um yeah so this is probably the last part of the talk um just the tips
And pointers in this case uh I would say get quotations for National phase filings uh early in advance so that you can estimate or budget the cost uh you would be able to understand what would be the expenses the next uh 12 to 18 months or after 18 months uh prioritize
And divide geographies for different funding programs so you may want to go to multiple countries uh for filing applications but then remember that each of these countries is going to cost you something so the the no the more number of countries that you file obviously for making sure that these applications are
Live you need to continuously pay fees or pay uh the agent fees as well so uh depending on the market that you are looking at try to prioritize and divide the geography so in certain cases you may want to file for example us Japan and China in one application or one
Funding program and for example for Europe and maybe uh other parts of Asia you may want to file through some other program as well so divide this part very uh very early in advance uh then provide as many details as possible during the application program I would say preempt
Uh most of these things uh especially with respect to your strategy uh in the case of uh I would say Fe if you have received F make sure that the Fe is filed F response is filed on time and you have the document ready for your uh funding
Submission as well similarly for ISR even though ISR is an opt optional part that you need to respond to uh I would say that uh still formulate response to ISR and keep it ready with you uh you may also want to uh do pability analysis and knockout search early in advance uh
So that for any of such funding schemes you may uh preempt that part or submit it together with your application um align your commercialization strategy especially the regulatory part because for example during the Bara presentation one of the questions that we were asked was uh in order to file in these
Countries how are you going to go about a regulatory pathway in those respective countries so you may need to be aware of the regulatory challenges in those respective countries alongside your patent application so this goes hand in hand I would say the regulatory don’t leave it uh aside uh try to also
Formulate a regulatory strategy for for those respective geographies as well um yeah justification for I think I have highlighted it twice or Thrice now so uh prepare very robust justification a for National phase filing uh support it with actions so for example supporting means uh in this case if you
Have uh any collaborator any um partner uh try to get a letter try to have anou collaboration agreement or a Loi something like this so that any of the funding body asks you you will have these documents ready and you may not need to uh Rush at the last minute um
The final part is if the indan patent is granted obviously this will strengthen your application during the funding scheme yeah that’s it uh from my side and I’m I’m uh happy to take any questions I would rather request you to ask any questions from uh from the point
Of view of application what can be submitted what cannot be submitted and so on so I I’m I’m open for any kind of questions thank in mind I think Dr Pat you would want to take few questions you have posted quite a few MDA maybe you can please take it up
In sequence yeah all right so let me start with uh right from the beginning so there’s a question from Dr Pand if one has received a big Grant which has to can one get the patent expenses refunded so yeah I think in VI right CH there is
A yes so in the in the big uh I think scheme itself uh you probably have a budget for patent filing as well so uh if you have that already in place you might be able to file it or account it in that budget head right yeah let me just clarify
There uh it’s not a reimbursement right yes these grants it is always uh um you can’t take past costs and get it reimbursed okay that is not allowed in all the grants and it is uh I think you may want to comment also chinai I think uh the bua basically pays its service
Providers to do the filings in P path isn’t it yes give you the direct gr am I right yes yes so uh the the mechanism is uh the following that uh actually there is a patent firm uh that that is an impaneled patent firm from braak uh we
Probably do not have a direct interface with this m panel patent firm uh the the entire correspondence is more more or less handled by Barak uh so in this case whatever queries this firm uh will have uh they will be directed to bak and then Bak will communicate these queries to
You so uh essentially in this case uh you will always have uh Barak in between yeah thanks there’s one more uh if one has received a patent on one’s pH name will the expenses be refunded so yeah I don’t think so it be in the startup’s name yes uh anen wants
To know is knockout search report same as prior art search so so depends uh I think uh probably IP team uh at Venture Center will be able to provide uh little more information in this regard uh so knockout search is probably uh the term
That has been used uh in our case uh by couple of patent firms that we engaged with yeah it’s probably a reference to a patentability assessment right which is essentially looking at novelty non obviousness utility and any exclusion criteria also which might not allow the patent to be granted I mean obvious
Reasons why it will not get granted then you need to uh put that down or if you you can list why it can get granted right so that’s something which I think uh is what is being referred to yeah yeah go ahead uh is there any basic TRL to seek these grants
Um I probably uh would recommend that most of us are uh in the product development cycle so uh the earlier you apply for your provisional application probably it will be TRL 1 two or something like this and as we proceed during these grants your TRL level will get Advanced so I I don’t
Think there is any requirement from that point of view from any of the funding schemes uh Dr pnat wants you to comment on the eligibility criteria for B path program so uh I think the eligibility criteria is very well uh laid out on the website uh you may want to refer to
These uh uh criterias actually the most important part in this case is is uh you are you are a startup that is applying and not as an individual and if your P patent is granted uh it needs to be assigned to the company and not on an
Individual name these are I think the most important things otherwise the rest of the things are very well laid out in the on the website uh there’s a question from one of our e fellows she wants to understand how the collaboration with other companies or startups before or during
Patent filing or Grant application will affect the Grant application so what you should be careful about when you’re fing when you’re collaborating with other startups or companies uh so in this case so for example what we had was uh we for example were interacting with couple of
Uh partner firms abroad in this case the important part was of signing an NDA so we had signed an NDA with the with the partner firm uh which was abroad and then uh on the basis of that basically we were interacting and collaborating uh for any kind of work
That we were doing so I probably if I understand your question correctly uh the best starting point is getting uh NDA in place and making sure that uh your inventiveness or novelty is producted uh Dr P do you want to add anything here um no I think um the question might
Also refer to whether um how does it affect your abilities to share cost or to get grants of this kind if there are collaborations right I I suppose that is another since you have applied a loan chinai as a uh it’s little less complicated but I suppose you could do
Joint uh if uh with especially another startup which is also eligible right of course that you have an agreement with them yes so I think that needs to be checked uh I I don’t have much information about this yeah that’s fine yeah MDA can take the next question May yes so
Uh can you see the questions chin yes yes so uh I think I kind of answered about impaneled uh patent firm uh no yeah so the the next part is in uh in which case do you have uh any choice of attorney so we don’t have I mean at
Least in our case we did not have any uh kind of choice for the patent firm uh the patent firm is empaneled by braak so they uh essentially decide uh The Firm so uh and with respect to the funding funding amount uh the entire I would say
Through the course of the period as we progress in terms of national phase filing as and when expenses are incurred from this patent firm uh the invoices are directly sent to buak so in in that case those are cleared by by braak and we even are not really at this point of
Time uh know in terms of how these expenses will be uh projected in the in the due course of time so we are not getting the money or we are not getting the grant directly to our account but rather it’s it’s in a kind form so the
Total amount is known and in that case whatever billing will be done through this IP firm uh that will be subtracted through your Grant amount yeah can you also give a rough sense of the costs involved in terms of at each stage u based on whatever you
Have dealt with so far yes uh and also you know the funding that Bak paths kind of things provide it’s only for filing and prosecution also for Renewal and maintenance uh so there are there are two two things so uh in the in the program document or the scheme document
It is listed that uh there are different ways and means it can be funded so uh there is a 100% funding available for first two years that means any expenses that will be incurred uh let’s say in a specific country like us all the expenses 100% expenses will be uh will
Be borne by Barak uh above and beyond that for example after 2 years if there are any expenses uh it will be 50% uh to be shared by Barak and 50% will be built to us uh this will be for two years and there after after four
Years it will be our responsibility to take it ahead if the patent is granted uh so if you’re lucky and if your patent is granted within these four years obviously uh for example the the maintenance cost for th those four years uh can be uh accounted for in the grant
Itself so it all is kind of depending on case to case basis uh and I would say that depending on how your agreement uh is and what kind of funding that you get from by so would you if you were to say if you didn’t have a grant support what
Would you have to budget for say costs for every country um yeah so for example I would say that um I I kind of know partly some figures uh so for example China and Japan together is uh approximately 12 12 lakhs uh until probably Grand stage uh
Maybe even more in uh in the case if your if your application is longer than the translation cost increases uh in certain cases uh depending on your number of claims your off IAL fee also increases but in general the bpar figure could be 12 to 15 lakhs for about two countries I would
Say in such cases where translation is involved uh in the case of for example us and Europe I would imagine it to be slightly higher uh Europe is slightly higher than us to my understanding uh but yeah I mean these are some what the ballp figure so uh if you don’t have the
Funding uh you probably would need to account for for uh this much amount yeah um Sor I’ll continue because looks like MDA l sound there no no I’m here so since you were asking I just stepped out at what stage in your patent life cycle did you apply so when do you recommend
Other startups should start applying for funding yeah so uh one of the um slide that I showed so uh we applied for example uh so our pathway was like we first of all submitted a provisional application uh we did not directly file the complete disclosure uh at month 11
We filed a complete disclosure and PCT filing uh following that we knew that we have about 18 months window uh until the national phase application during this time we actually received the fe uh and we submitted Fe response once the Fe response was filed uh it was slightly
Delayed I would say uh from our side but then right after your complete disclosure is filed or the PCT is filed you have about 18 months until National fease applications so I think this is the best window right away after 12th month to submit an application for funding for National fees because it
Takes time so your evaluation takes time it took about I would say uh even the application preparation and submission of the detailed application took about 2 months so once you submit the onepage application uh it took about two months for us to submit the complete application to
Barra yeah so I see uh the eligibility criteria for MS inss program so it’s again very well laid out on uh uh the website the most important part is this is Maharashtra State innovation Society uh program that means uh your startup needs to be uh incubator or rather needs
To be incorporated in Maharashtra uh this program is not available for other states uh there’s one one more question can anyone apply for support of application after publication for examination and further process yes yes you can even uh even in the case of uh msin for let’s say that you file an
Application uh in a country like Brazil and let’s say Australia uh because those are some of the important markets uh you took all the expenses uh from from your own pocket and later on you realize that okay now the total expenses are somewhere close
To 10 lakhs or 12 lakhs what you can do is you can go to MSS provided that you are registered in Maharashtra uh you can go to Ms inss and and apply for this reimbursement scheme so in that case again your total expense cost let’s say
Uh is uh let’s say 10 lakhs in these two countries uh the 8 lakh will be reimbursed to you and the rest of the two lakhs I think uh will be should be borne by you in that case so this is more like a reimbursement scheme as well
You can you can obviously go uh after your filing as well after your publication as well okay thanks uh before we take any further comments uh let me alert everyone the feedback link for today’s talk is there in the chat box so please do give your feedback for the session
Any uh suggestions you have for new topics uh you can always uh enter in the feedback link uh so I think Dr pnat has already shared the links for the different programs which chin has described uh someone has asked about the IP Mitra program and the link is also
Alo shared again in the chat box uh by Dr pnad uh there’s also something from Karnataka patent reimbursement scheme so that’s another for people I think startups who are registered in Karnataka I believe so yeah M just wanted to add that uh for this IP Mitra scheme it is
Essentially about uh you know being able to do it at reduced costs and so on and having access to uh uh to p agents who will be able to file it for you um in practice some of our startups sometimes um you know struggle with it because uh
The the the agents sometimes get reimbursements from the government very late so uh that I’m not seen too many of our startups use it but that’s what we have seen happening okay yeah any other questions you want to take up uh there’s questions in the chat box
Are done uh if there are any more questions uh you can still add to the chat box or you can simply raise your hand we can unmute you also yeah so just as an aside many other states also have patent reimbursement schemes Karnataka Telangana uh and so on
So you should just look up uh those as well so uh chin may um you know this is very useful because you have done it practically you know what what it takes um how um um like when you you’re uh the counter who’s the in who’s the
Counterpart on the bar site or the uh um MSS site right and uh do they also give you inputs on some suggestions besides of course uh you know taking decisions on the Grant and how to process it and so on uh so we have uh honestly speaking
We have not interacted them before we actually submitted an an application so from from the point of view of whether we should submit an application in this manner we had not really interacted with them uh but then the point of contact in in the case of Barra uh is Dr Vinita
Jindal uh and the program manager is Amit Kar uh and then uh in Ms inss I think there are multiple people uh the I think the the list is uh on the website so uh we were in touch with Jui Matthews uh and there are couple of more
People and there are I think six uh empaneled patent firms uh from Ms inss so depending on which one you choose eventually you will be interacting with that patent firm yeah and do you get a chance to choose or can you choose or are you are assigned out of the six uh
No so in in B case as I mentioned uh it’s it’s decided by Bak but in MSS uh there is a possibility that you can choose uh the the patent firm also Jin there’s one question so for the bict funding uh the assumption is that it has to be a bio kind of
Invention which is supported right yeah so I would say uh anything that usually supported by Bak I mean Bak now supports uh a large uh kind of a sector so anything that is supported through through Bak uh through their various programs I think it should be possible
To get funding for it yeah and what about the MS scheme it’s SE I think MSS is agnostic so you can literally uh go for for any any uh I don’t know discipline or feel in that way right so I think the entire list of programs which could be supported Dr P
Is good there’s one more which has come are there any programs to reers Indian patent the patent is filled in the name of individual and startup registration is in process uh so I think in this way would probably one way would be you you need to assign this to your startup First
Once you assign it to to your startup uh it might be possible that you might want to check this with Ms inss because they have a reimbursement scheme but I am not too sure since the original uh patent was filed on an individual name whether
This is allowed so you might want to get in touch with the team and get a clarification yeah my knowledge it is most of the programs won’t allow that but uh uh the one there is one it’s since Indian patent you may want to explore this DC MSM program which is for reimbursement
Of patterns and msme can also be a so proprietorship right I mean so in which case it may may be possible so you may want to explore that uh to the person who asked the question uh shria yes so I put a link in the chat box so that you
Can I think with that we should close now thank you so much chinai for taking the time out and also on short notice taking it up on our request so thank you so much really appreciate nothing like an entrepreneur teaching other entrepreneurs because you’ll give firsthand information yeah thank you for
The opportunity so let me again alert people about the feedback link which is there in the chat box also as a heads up our next talk in this series is coming up on 12th of March and again another important topic is going to be discussed how do you decide inventorship for
Patents that’s a topic for 12th March uh so please do join in you will get the alerts if you have registered already so look out for our emails and WhatsApp messages with this thank you chinmai once again on behalf of the team here at Venture Center and tech.in and we look
Forward to having many more sessions with you thank thank you thank you bye bye byebye
