Day 22. 31km (77999kms 7yrs)

I eagerly awaited the sun hitting the sand on gorgeous Petani beach; Iā€™d promised myself a swim if the sun came out. But so steep were the cliffs backing the bay to the east I was dressed and packed away before the first rays of sunlight hit the sand. Next time..

As I climbed out the couple of kilometres back to the road the sea was a spectacular emerald and sapphire. With the sun out, and wind behind me I was in love with Kefalonia. All the brightly coloured wild flowers, the scampering goats, the dramatic scenery at every turn. Continuing north up the slender peninsular there was scarcely a moment I couldnā€™t see the sea on at least one side of me. Stopping to photograph some flowers I very nearly stepped on a snake in the grass beside the road. But fortunately he scarpered before I got a proper look at him.

North of Agkonas I was nearing the famously beautiful Myrtos beach where I planned to camp. But turning the corner I found the way closed. For about 500m around the cliff-face the road appeared to be nothing but rubble as half a dozen road working crew appeared to be widening the road. I didnā€™t like my chances, and it was a 50km round trip if I wanted to see this beach. Realistically I wouldā€™ve probably given up and skipped this peninsular and headed back south to the ferry from Sami. But I was in luck! Instructed to wait half an hour, I was soon directed to follow. All work stopped as I scrambled through the rubble pushing Gibbo as fast as I could to keep up. Where the route became impassable with much larger rocks, the man hopped into one of the ā€˜diggersā€™ and shifted the boulders creating a path for me! I was blown away by this kindness; never have I had a path created especially for me! And with that I was through, the sun was setting behind and beneath me as I continued along the ridge in the cliff.

And so once more I descended 250 off metres to camp this time on the astonishingly beautiful Myrtos beach. Calculating that since both Myrtos and Petani beaches face the same way, and that the wind was continuing from the east, I didnā€™t worry too much about sheltering myself. I just picked a flat pebble-free spot smack bang in the centre of all this beauty. And this proved to be ok, until after dark when the wind picked up and seemingly bouncing off every angle of cliff-face pummelled me from all directions.

    2. Beautiful. If you'd have told me this beach was on Lefkada I'd have believed you. It looks just like one I used to camp on there. Quiet and beautiful beach, something yummy to cook for dinner, a bottle of nice red wine. What more can one ask for?
