Welcome back to the French rugby podcast with me Tim Groves ex Scotland International and adopted Frenchman Johnny BT and we’re going to be joined by former Italy Center Michel Campo shortly to reflect on a famous result for Italy if not the win they wanted obviously we’ll get into a full debrief

Johnny about what is going on with France at the moment how bad it is or if it’s maybe not quite as bad as summer making out but I suppose we probably have to talk about the Kutter Cup first that’s where you were you in Edinburgh

So go on England are [ __ ] I don’t know you want me to say it’s delightful to be able to say that no matter what country you’re from um and yeah first time for Scotland four times in a row since 1896 1896 mate um so yeah exceptional weekend good fun marfield absolutely

Bouncing as was the corporate catching up with everyone and a couple of be afterwards in Edinburgh um but yeah England honestly Scotland won that in third year with 40% possession England England being bad is more of the story that is what I came away that was my take coming

Away from it is that they are properly in a hole now and I have no idea how they’re going to get out of it with all the resource with all the players I know they’ve had reduced teams in the Premiership but still they’ve got 10x 15x the amount of players

Talent um that Scotland does so to see how easy at times that was for Scotland how poor England were with the ball um was eye opening to say the least enough about that if england a bad let’s talk France because they weren’t great the weekend but there are a lot of headlines

Some over here I’m sure loads in France one over here was saying the end of a golden age for France which is surely overstating it because given the age profile of the side the talent the depth they have in France not on the playing side it’s not the end of a generation at

All but we’ve spoken a bit about the sort of support that France had in the leadup to a home World Cup slightly reduced now in terms of the squad size is obviously tense because it’s a new coaching staff and things are not going well it’s a critical period in terms of

They not making a knei reaction right yeah it just me it needs managed gently and smartly we had floran Grill the French president came out not the country of the ffr came out and said Fabian gal’s job is not in danger the guy’s got a contract through to the end

Of the 2027 World Cup realistically the ffr doesn’t have the resource to be able to sack him he’s on such a big contract they’d have to pay him out Millions if they’re going to fire him um and I genuinely don’t think what’s happening at the minute and I know normally we say

The buck stops with a head coach I just think there’s a lot going on in and around and if you look back at the games and this is why there’s such an angry reaction in France at the minute is because they’ve been used to having such a resurgent well organized efficient

Team that’ve been pretty ruthless and really nice to follow for the past three four years right so French Public’s been spoiled um and we’ve now had three results maybe four so exit the World Cup that aside Ireland still probably number one side in the world demolished Scotland

Performance was abject but they won the game um but drawing with Italy that has been a new low and if we’re we’re being honest they should have lost that game if it if it was for the if it wasn’t for the red card I think they’d have won it

Comfortably yeah I mean I mean comfortably I caner the first 40 minutes I think they made six entries in not six entries they made six minutes they had six minutes camped inside Red Zone and they just couldn’t convert and I think with all the sort of Hysteria everything

Blowing around all the media noise it’s weird the players to me look like they’ve kind of gone away from a little bit what I know is Fabian gal’s strengths which are amazing starter plays getting you over the gain line and then working as a team to finish those things and then nail

Opportunities it almost looks like in the chaos and the noise and the sort of Stadium that’s obviously expectant it’s almost one-off problem fixing they’re all like serial buy go and get over the gain line then the ball pops out somebody else go go over like there’s no

Normally it’s you’re off nine there’s a certain point that you attack that I know from working with Fabian there’s a certain area or there’s an option of a pot pass there’s a unit then there’s a clear beyond the ball gain line achieved then it’s the ne phase and it’s maybe

Slightly further out or it’s back ball and all those little things with the forwards it just looks frantic it doesn’t look like fabian’s got his stamp on it and I just think he needs to take them back in lad settle we’ve had a red card I know that’s changed the game it

Completely changed the Dynamics and they fell apart um but back up to 15 with a full compliment you also remember we spoke about it last week like they’re missing eight of their best players that isn’t the same of any of the other six nations teams at the minute so you got

For different reasons you got dupon who’s in Vancouver you got Interac you got aldr you’ve got tibo flamon you got mfu you got Jalan you got Marshon working his way back so you’ve got what five eights of the pack and you’re starting 91 aren’t there um and the

Players know that as well the players feel that and they’ve spoken about that over the past month that the seven or eight of their top boys aren’t there so it’s a difficult period but it is what it is like there’s no point in panicking Fabian is the best coach over here at

The minute it’s just settle use the last two games to maybe blood a bit of Youth um we saw tulagi have a pretty decent impact for 50 minutes against the Italians um he’s come up well expect mfu to get capped the next two games um and I think it’s just about being

Patient building back those performances that we’ve been so used to over the past four years in that cycle um yeah nothing nothing knee-jerk because what’s the point what’s the point be kneejerk at this stage and you mentioned that that coaching message that we’ve seen obviously get across over the past four

Years doesn’t seem to be getting across in these opening few games obviously we’ve talked about the new assistant coaches that’s going to take time to bed in is there a danger that the players are not responding to him and that message is sort of worn out because

After a certain period of time sometimes that does happen is there a danger of that or not it’s exactly what happened in Mel when we were there as CL and that that was what he said and that was what he said internally to us and I think to

From memory to the the sort of board of the club to M alad was that the message isn’t getting over anymore um and I think that when bridges are burned and there’s personal things come in and you’re in a club environment that’s one thing but I I genuinely don’t think that

Applies to the French national team I can understand Mell if if things happen and relationships break down down but you’re going to the French team you’re going to the Pinnacle of your rugby career um it’s not about relationships it’s about going there for what a 5we period and Performing um and

I still believe that the technical and strategic element of what we’ve seen over the past four seasons is top quality and he has I mean you think that opening game against the All Blacks they’ they’ve demolished some of the top tier of world rugby um in the past four years they’ve beaten

Everybody so yeah there’s a danger of again be knee-jerk and saying what these CH I don’t think it does and I don’t think that the players um would throw Fabian under the bus either because I think they’ve known that they’ve been part of something very very special and that the French side if

You speak to a matu bastro or Shuli or any of these boys that were part of it during the difficult years they were extremely envious and have been very very jealous of this French side over the past um three four seasons so yeah look I don’t think we’re at a stage

Where that will happen um and I think the players understand how lucky they are to be working with a coach of fabian’s quality um but I do think they need some sort of internal reset not a reset but I think it’s just going to take time for players to come back from

Injury who are the leaders and for whatever it’s going to be line out whereever it’s going to be multiphase start play all these things to click back into place for them to find the level that we’ve been used to seeing um so yeah I think that’s going to be

Patience it’s going to be hard for the players because they’re not patient they just want to get and perform but I think for French rugby public for media and for supporters it’s going to take you know five to 10 games before we see them back at the level that we’re all hoping

For I’d say and from the evidence you’ve seen on the pitch you don’t see cause for concern that he might have lost the dressing room no I don’t think it’s a dressing room thing um there’s a there’s a difference and I saw was barard Jackman friend of the show speaking with

Jim and hoggy he was saying I think there might be there’ll be tension between between Fabian and French media that’s one thing but I think internally in terms of performance and the squad and the Hands-On of what you’re going out and producing that doesn’t affect that um just because

There’s a bit of ruffled feathers and people are starting to get prickly in the Press doesn’t mean that players are going to start turning their heads or like oh this guy’s terrible they know they they know what they’ve achieved they know how good this guy you got to

Think back to like record score tck him how long was that less than a year yeah I mean I mean they they stuck 50 plus on England last year twiking them um so the quality is still there um the parts to building performances that are top class are still there I I

Just think with assistants that have changed and a lot of players out it’s just going to take a little bit of patience that’s all but I think they’ll be back and they will be one of the top four or five nations in the world fairly regularly um under Fabian stewardship um

It’s just going to take a little bit of time and yeah big sample size for how well they did sort of 30 40 games and Fabian G between 2019 building towards 2023 very small sample size of it going wrong over the past three or four games

You mentioned he isn’t going to get the sack in your opinion from the FFL they don’t have the budget to do it and also why would they based on the body of evidence is there a danger then because of that relationship with the French media public you know Fabian that he

Might jump rather than be pushed or not don’t think so I can’t think where he’d want to jump to just an emotive reaction I suppose I I just I don’t know where he would go um in that you know he’s done cluband he’s done St France he’s done

Tulon he’s done melier he’s been part of the argentinan setup this now is the Holy Grail for him he’s a former French Captain former player of uh former World Player of the Year uh now leading French rugby on a world stage and I I think

This is the ultimate for him and I think he’s had a taste you know you go back three months ago he was talking about leading France not through just This World Cup coming 2027 but the one after that too he was like why not I’d love to

This is and it is I I genuinely believe this is the job if you’re a French rugby coach this is the one that everyone wants I think personally for him after having been through the volatility of tulon and Mel and St fron this is the

Top of the tree so when we say would he jump I mean that have to be something very very lucrative and completely different for him to to hop into but I just don’t see the opportunity for him at the the top 14 and in terms of the

Nuts and bots on the pitch obviously prior to the Italy game we spoke about how the set piece was really struggling that did improve like against Italy their set piece was was okay and the scrum they were certainly dominant for a period Then Italy came back the line out

Wasn’t too bad at all what has happened to France’s discipline JY they had one yellow card in the last 11 games prior to the tournament two yellows Two Reds they’ve played uh nearly half 110 minutes out of 240 minutes so far down to 14 men you can’t win games like that

Can you no I and I I do not know the answer here and that they’re normally so squeaky clean and maybe it is the backdrop in context of all the noise of French media the discontent and it’s then well we’ll try extra hard on like

Jo Joe Dy case in point I’m trying extra hard to come up and show everyone that I am Ken’s mustard because people have been very critical of him and and fiku in the centers what are they doing why have they been so poor as they have been

The halfbacks they haven’t had any ball so Jo dantey there’s his opportunity get off the line make can impact make his physical presence felt and he’s mistimed it horrible like head on head and that’s it the game’s gone so I don’t know I think these are all mental factors of

Well as well that have come into play because things have not been going well and on field they’ve been trying or maybe going a little bit Ott and that’s one and then as we know as soon as you go down to 14 Rugby’s a game of pressure and soon as your

Defensive system is shot you can’t have the line speed you want you’re trying to absorb you’re soaking pressure and psychological factors that you go off and problem solve in isolation you do weird things both sides of the ball in attack and defense so we just saw France

Again in the first half where honestly I thought they looked really comfortable um but that red card has completely changed the mechanism the Dynamics of the game and then the second period is penalty after penalty because they feel like they’re playing with an arm chopped off they’ve got

Their go forward and Joe Dy that’s gone and they feel like they have to do something different and that’s when you exit or you come out of the structure that you’ve been given and you try to do extra as an individual and it it never

Works so it’s weird it’s a weird bit of rugby and it’s purely psychological but again France’s discipline has just gone to Absolute tatters after that one instant because up until then they looked very very safe easy and looked like they’re going to win the game at

Caner even if they played the same style and the same brand you think okay first period they’ve had 6 minutes than 22 they haven’t converted it’s been a bit Scrappy but if they get that again it’s going to be bonus Point went easily um so yeah frustration for them and again

It’ll be horrible for Joe Dante having been there myself it’s not a nice place to be and he’ll take that solely that’s sole responsible he’ll feel the whole weight of French rugby right now on his shoulders which is not a nice place to be and another quick one on a couple of

The assistant coaches because it might just be time and we might be sat here in a few weeks time saying we’ve seen some improvements give it a bit more time but obviously we were so used to seeing under tbu France’s Fitness through the roof Nicholas jeanan obviously worked

Under TBO jeru so there shouldn’t be a great deal of difference you would think and obviously people have referred to the fact that there’s been a lot of games back toback in the top 14 the players are playing more than some of the other nations players maybe that’s

The reason so that’s one and then the attack you mentioned how much time they spent in the 22 by the end of the game it was 10 visits one try obviously that isn’t a good enough conversion rate you get one more than that and you’ve won the game it’s as simple as that

So is that just you’re not clicking because Patrick areta is obviously the attack coach he surely didn’t have to rip things up because it was pretty good before physically I can understand why the players are wrecked like they’re the only country to come back from the World

Cup everyone’s gone straight back on the horse and they’ve knocked together something like 14 games consecutively no other country’s done that so that I can understand and for there to be you know comparisons between tibo jiru who like is top class and Jean Jean who also is a

Great bloke like Jean Jean’s got he’s got nothing to do in that you basically are hoping everyone is not injured and you’re getting them through training sessions and then getting them on the field like there’s not much prep right it’s not like the World Cup where there was

Criticism for TBO and the injuries and the soft tissue things this is what state are the players in how much energy have they got and get them through test match rugby which is six nations against other nations who are primed for this period they have enforced rest periods because they’re Union controlled so

That’s very different um the attack is the one bit that I’m really struggling with um in the aretas has come in from Peron who were basement of top 14 there’s not much that we’ve seen and again like knowing Fabian as I do Patrick’s maybe going to be responsible

For some of the starter plays getting them over the game line then once you get into multiphase the templates how they want to play I’m assuming are completely the same the three quarters are go off and have their specialist training during the week with Patrick and Fabian but I mean how much

Influences he meant to have again the first few games no lineups one no ball no nothing this game it was almost like everybody irrespective of irrespective of starter plays or what was going on it was like hot potato it was just get me the ball I want to carry I want to get

On the go on the front foot by myself it didn’t look like a team so it doesn’t really come from your three quarter coach that is a sort of Team ethos and mindset that needs to be sort of rain back in Lads I know you’re trying really

Hard but we’ve we’ve got structures and systems that we stick to and that’s how we’ve blitzed teams off the field in the past 24 months so it is weird mate and there’s lots of criticism and criticism obviously get chucked about when things are not going well but like the assistants need time

To settle the line out was much better was a positive Surat be absolutely delighted with the scrum you had atonio with two lagi like I you saw the weight packs at the start of the game but they like 100 100 kilo Advantage which is incredible um but it just comes back to

My point initially which is time like all these things assistant coaches new players new players coming in getting their first caps um it’s going to be Rocky right um but France have got the natural playing Power um that given again as we’ve seen five six seven test matches under their belt again summer

Tour this season will be very important be interesting to see who gets bled on that tour um but I guess the tricky part for them now is all they don’t have time they’ve got two more test matches in the Six Nations to finish as high up as they can and and

Really if we’re to be very critical France were humbled in the first test match against Scotland and the TMO decision could have seen that ball going another way and I’m fairly sure with our guest in a minute we’re going to we’re GNA pick apart how and why Italy didn’t win that

Game with another tml decision that should have been so could be out from three they could very easily be zero points from the first three games um so yeah looking forward to seeing what our guess thinks that because I know a lot of people were not too happy let’s get

On I think we have to start paying you if you come back on again so after this maybe this will be it Michael all good let’s talk about Italy first and the the controversial ending in Leo let’s get straight straight to the point should poo gari have been

Allowed to retake his penalty should the clock shot clock have been stopped or was it just unfortunate what happened uh I you know I follow be like uh you know the comments after the game and and I just think like uh at their level with

The with such a with such a big game you know uh you need to be careful in the details and you know if it comes to down to like retake the penalty you should allow to retake the penalty or like just the referee you know bear in mind every

Single you know rule in that moment which is you know the opponents cannot move and do whatever they want to distract him so I think a little bit more uh you know attention on the details at the end would be probably cost yeah e the win so there’s two parts

To this there’s if the ball falls off a te and it’s not the fault of a player surely the clock should be reset because why wouldn’t you be allowed the time to take a ball it’s not like you’re time wasting and the second part is the French players as it fell then charged

Garbc down so surely on that second count it should have been reset surely he should have been allowed to take a kick again yeah I mean I I’m not sure you know on the rule if the ball Falls or not you should stop the time but I

Think the the rule is clear when someone moves and like try to clearly distract the kick you know that’s you know that’s time consuming that’s like Destruction for the and you know we know how high pressure is to kick you know to to kick penalties and especially in such a

Crucial time a crucial game like you know you can’t allow the opposition to you know really mess with the with the kicker head and I think that’s what really happened there and I know that Paulo is you know he’s taking his responsibility and already said after

The game like he doesn’t want you know uh um these uh these kind of like comments to be an excuse for him but you know I think you know you should uh you should definitely had to retake a penalty there yeah Johnny I think in the laws obviously with a penalty not

Allowed to charge it a conversion you are allowed to charge it but with the penalty it’s slightly ambiguous isn’t it because you’re definitely not allowed to charge it and you could argue that at least one of those French players was charging it but if they weren’t charging

And they were just moving that’s allowed it’s on Sportsman like as Micha said it it’s going to potentially put P GBC off but you don’t have to stand still once he started his runup but if you get within 10 meters again that’s another penalty 10 meters further ahead so

Sebastian T knew I don’t know whether he was within 10 meters or not but it was certainly close he was close enough there was two it wasn’t just too there was another player who was closer can’t remember who it was but the certainly reason again in my mind I was like that

Is going to be reset and a 10 meter gain which was wasn’t given and at least it was going to be retaken so it’s a shocker because I thought that was going to be the first Italian win away against the French in the Six Nations it’s not to be and that would

Have been hugely historic right for this current crop of players for Gonzalo cada as well going back and coaching against a lot of players that he knows really well that would have been a huge result for Italy yeah and I think it’s he also deserved in terms of you know the

Performance especially in the second half and the defense and the first half like uh we put ourself in a really you know good uh good position and uh and you know col like you know unfortunate time or whatever like it’s it wasn’t wasn’t meant to be but um yeah it’s a

Shame because opportunities like this don’t come that often especially to Italy and you know with the with confidence and hope that they will because I think results are showing that especially like the under 20s and you know like the whole Italian movement with the traviso like you know winning a

Lot and that will keep hope to the Italians to you know be in this situation again and probably win the game so yeah let’s try to stay positive from from this uh unfortunate moment yes it’s not the win but even a draw away at France I suppose the way it unfolded as

You said first half defense was very good Johnny and I spoke about how the French attack was was pretty poor when they got into the 22 but Italy made a huge number over 100 tackles in the first half and and really did a good job keeping France out and then the red card

Obviously turned things and then the second half potentially Italy could have taken one more chance and then they would have got the win but generally the try was great and they looked like they were doing things in attack that we perhaps haven’t seen recently we I think

I’ve seen like a much um you know a step forward in in on the attack perspective in the last few years with with Kieran Cowley and with all these exciting player like menello and and and kot so you know like it’s it’s been great to see great to watch um and I think

Definitely they show that way more in the second half and in the first half they were like not really I mean they didn’t have opportunities but they you know um they were really attacking a lot um it’s also true that France said you know red car and we all know when French

Like have a red car they like they start like panicking a little bit uh things goes south and they you saw that like they were like chucking balls around they were like they’ve been French in in that in that regard and that of course helped us um but you know yeah

It’s hopefully we’ll take that you know second half into the next two games and you know the confidence to win games you know until there and what have you seen so far that you’ve liked Gonzalo cassada has just come in new coach at this level his first shot as a head coach International

Level but when you look and you see how the back Line’s operating the sort of pivot around brecks are you enjoying the way they play you enjoying the new style I think uh from what I’ve heard and you know like and probably what we can see

As well that hasn’t been like a drastic change and and that wasn’t his whole point is like you I’m not going to come in and change after the squad change the way we play like you know the defense Defan coach is the same and he didn’t

Want to like bring too many changes at once um and uh I think you can see that they still have like a DNA of I think this the squad in the previous cycle with Kieran because most of the players are the same um but I think he’s definitely probably brought out like you

Know his experience let’s say in France okay but um some as we were saying last time like the the the the good mandate is to like bring the squad together and I saw like especially after the game every play of like you know I head up and you know I

Try to you know the group is the most important things and I think that’s probably what he’s trying to do like to create like a a solid group of players that you know can deal with different situation and on under the Rugby Pro side of view I think we will see more in

The next few few months and few years and when we spoke at the World Cup it was I think it was between the the unfortunately the hammering by the All Blacks and the hammering by France but one of the main criticisms that we all sort of discussed and was very much

Evident to anyone watching really was that Italy had developed this good attacking style but they used it from too deep they played too much rugby in their own half and then they’re R 22 at time so have you seen evidence that that is not happening under Gonzalo cada as

We expected and also in the lead up to this France game he made a big point and Johnny referenced it there I mean not many teams have humans of the size of poo toang and Willie Antonio but the Italy side was very much smaller and lighter so therefore you have to be

Smart tactically don’t you no yeah for sure I think uh you know as we were saying like you know last time for sure uh they’re probably kicking a b more and you know be more strategic under the point of view um we you know we saw what happened with

Tomaso Alan being you know in the squad and that change probably a bit like putting Paulo back in uh you know as a as the main uh main main guy with the Tactical choices and you know he’s he’s a guy that is very good you know balling

End but he’s also a really good kicker um and I think I don’t know a lot padello the number nine but I think he’s also like a pretty good strategic player which is very you know helpful if you if you if he puts you in the right in the

Right part of of the field to play so yeah I think going forward you do need yeah these these kind of players is kind of tactic for sure do you know what’s got me thinking this game and looking back at the World Cup it’s have France gone backwards or have Italy

Moveed I can’t get my head wrong have Italy improved Lots or were France just very poor and they got a red card what do you think like I think Italy is improving and that’s that’s like a a fact so you you saw the world ranky like you know

It’s not he not there you know we a good performance I think over the last two years yes we are like you know pretty bad games in the in in the World Cup because I don’t know like you know of course they were great France and and OB

Were great uh both there was like a change of cycle like probably people were in the right space but overall I think performance wise we’ve been way more competitive um and you know I think it’s been 11 years since we were like in the first 10 of the war rank so that’s

That’s already showing you that we Progressive so I think we are progressing but France is definitely like not the same level and I don’t know if it’s because GTI has been there for too long now or like if because I I said it from the start the uh start of the championship you

Know like France without opponent Mar is is no France and even though like they’re such a great players and um and is a great like top 14 is a great league and everything like you know do to like change the old Squad and I think there’s

No other teams where you can see that uh so much as you can see when when nine and 10 off France they’re not playing another guy that you mentioned a moment ago was Tommy Allen and he’s gone back to club I’m not sure if you saw the

Tribes involved in at the weekend like an absolute screamer he seems to be back and happy and on form but he stepped away from the Italian setup I’m wondering if you if you spoke to him and if it was just a case of like that blend of mental and physical exhaust and being

Away from family or or what it was that took him to sort of pull himself back a little bit from Italian involvement yeah I think like um I sent him a message a few days ago said look man let’s let’s catch up soon and I me to calling this

Week because I just wanted to you know let him be like process stay with the family but um yeah I I think honestly you know you see more and more in rugby like you know it’s it’s more common but it’s more normal to have like you know problems or

Like to have more like uh not being always uh perfect not be always like wanting to play for your country and putting maybe family first and I think that was his case of course you think he was was a lot like physically mentally for the last couple of years but also

You know he moved Club he was you know he was away with the with the with the World Cup and then you know he has a little kid and and his wife at the is you know when you have no family around and we can see a be as well like when

You have no family around then is a lot for the partners and it’s a lot I think also for the players you know to deal you know all these things all these emotion all these problems by by themselves so hopefully like he will he will come back you know soon and you

Know stronger than before and with Tommy not that you mentioned Pao Garb steps up he has more of a prominent role in terms of running the game it also changes selection in other areas of the field in your opposition in Center you had melanello and brex sort of developing a

Partnership and then all of a sudden they went with Mari and brex and shifted man and cello out to the wing so what is your view on what the best sort of Italian lineup is in the backs I think and you can see the like like a lot of

Um coaches have this mentality like sometimes is he not really who’s who’s my two best centers who’s like you know my best backs you know who’s my like you know my best backs that I can put on on on the pitch and in this case I think that what came down to like

Mello is you put him 12 13 Wing is probably the best you know with Koto Italian player um so with Mori you know I think having like a very good season in with with Bayon and you know like he missed I think he missed be like chances
