Although similar to a previously recorded route, this time differs by being:
(a) less protracted
(b) has some off-road sections
(c) the loop is reversed over normal
(d) avoids that dangerous road (A25) rising up from Gomshall
We love this 25 – 30 mile route

Welcome to THE TANDEM CHANNEL (aka T4 – TakesTwoToTandem); we are a couple of pensioners based in the South East of the UK that love to travel and take day-trips on our tandem. The channel is a means of sharing those routes and experiences with others – you don’t need to ride a tandem to do the rides….. but it is much more fun if you do

Well hello everyone this is a route that we’ve actually got in a different place that goes in the opposite direction but we’ve reversed it this time and then cut off some of the bad traffic so we’re uh going to new’s corner and uh we’re going to start from home which is our normal
Starting point um up near the garabaldi pub in thatp Hill but it’s quite because it’s a circle we’re quite happy for you to start anywhere near St John’s or anywhere on the circle so let’s just have a look at this ride so we join it in St John’s and we’re going
Anticlockwise around this Loop so go from St John’s uh we go through hook Heath down to mayford then Sutton green Jacobs Well and then follow around through bam and out the back over the A3 and at merrow and then we get to new’s corner and then that that’s where the
Route is sometimes different from what we’ve returned on because we’re then going to turn and go across the common and then up Staples Lane and work our way around the back of woking and Ripley uh via Rose Lane and Newark Lane and past Newark PRI and then round coming
Through pford and then rejoin the basing Stoke canal in Old in maybery so it’s a route of about 50 km but it may be less it may be 35 if you actually already live on the route somewhere so we’ve added a couple of miles each end
Just to arrive at the Circle or not involves the bathing Stoke Canal which is great and newand corner so let’s have a look at the highlights well newand corner is always beautiful it’s got toilets it’s got great views there’s also a cafe there or you can go to the
Cafe that’s over the other side of the road uh very peaceful route home on this one around New York prior uh just the Ripley Crossing there’s Cafe stops in Ripley as well and it’s not too long so what’s really good about this it’s much lower traffic levels than we’ve expected
On the previous ride uh it avoids that long a25 climb that’s quite dangerous because you’re well if you’re like us you’re probably traveling at about 5 m an hour and the traffic’s trying to whiz past you and it’s not ideal as you head up towards new’s Corner uh but when we
Go back we’re going on to gravel so that is ideal for everybody you still will have to put up with a bit of traffic and it’s not really appropriate for Pure road bikes because you’ve got that off-road bit and it can be particularly muddy uh the A3
Crossing in Ripley is a bit tricky uh we recommend you get off and push across uh the the muddy bit can get very slippery cuz you’re on a bit of a slope and watch out out for Rush Hour particularly so here we are we’re on the canal just
Briefly through hook Heath round through Jacob’s Well and suon green and then we’re heading up and here we are at new’s corner fantastic views as always then we head up across the common and then turn right and head towards new PRI new Lane around the back past pford and
Ripley and then work our way back onto the canal in woking and then head our way back from there and we took a slightly different route coming home because we like to adjust that bit okay you can see there 27.3 Mi it’s just under 40K so here we are on the route
Just leaving the garabaldi and we’re going to just join the canal in a slightly different place this time so we’re going through the Old Brook Hospital site and we’re going to join it by the canal boats so here we go right over the the top and the canal boats are just behind
Us there and we’re going to follow along with the railway literally to our right you can see the buttresses there for the railway embankment and this will bring us out uh past Hermitage estate that’s on the left and it brings us out here in St John’s right next to the pharmacy
That they’ve got there so there’s the pharmacy there’s St John’s Village we’re going to turn right up the hill past St John’s Church and then when we get to the top you’ve got that narrow Railway Bridge that’s got a set of traffic lights at each end and
We’re going to go over that when the lights change and we’re going to turn right here down Holly Bank Road so we follow Holly Bank Road through hook Heath and we’re heading really to the mayford roundabout on the A320 it’s got different names for that roundabout so we go over this second
Railway Bridge and then we drop down and here we are on the A320 but we don’t take that we head off towards Jacob’s well so we follow this road which is in fact once the old Main Road and it’s really quiet it’s pretty peaceful down here away from Rush Hour we’ve never
Found it a problem so quiet Road and lots of little villages to see and other things going on as we go through suton green and then toward Jacob’s Well as we get to Jacob’s Well then we follow a route that’s probably a bit more familiar to you if you’re used to driving this way and joining the A3 there so into the center of Jacob’s Well and head out past the little industrial bit and we’re going to cross over the
A3 up here now there is a cycle path that runs parallel so we’ve decided that we’re going to take that just because there’s a bit of extra traffic over the river over the rail the motorway and then at this roundabout here carry on on the cycle path and just
Follow your way through to the big roundabout with all the traffic coming off the a m the A3 go in towards uh buram and then turn left at the garage and follow up this road now this road is much much quieter depends on the time of day under
The the hard right underneath that Railway Bridge and then follow our way out and there is a cycle path all the way along here again and this will bypass the main bit of Road and it’ll take you through the little back ways over the back here and we can
Really recommend this it’s a lot more interesting okay there’s more cars parked Etc but we’re not racing we’re not rading odies we’re not just trying to get our head down and get as fast at average speed as we possibly can we want to enjoy the route so we follow through
This brings us out into the town and we do have to do this little bit of a dog leg here but then again we’re on a quiet Road and now we’re actually heading up towards Newlands corner it’s a long way up here but we follow up the hill now
You’ll see the camera start shaking that’s because it is uphill uh which means I’m having to lean forward a little bit more and do a bit more pedaling rather than coasting and this is quite a long hill but it’s nowhere near as steep as the other and the
Traffic is way way less than it is when you’re coming out from Bam um from uh new’s Corner if you’re coming up to new’s Corner the other way so what we’re doing here is heading up toward WS new and corner and I’m going to stop here
Because my video has stopped so now we continue continue on up this road and you’ll see the traffic’s not that bad occasionally things are passing but it’s a wide bit of Road and we get up to this Junction we’re going to turn right and we’re at new’s corner almost already so
New’s corner is just here there’s the the car park toilets and a cafe there we had a bit of a look around now we’ve just left and we turned left almost immediately if we heading out and this is taken us across the common you can see it’s a bit muddy underfoot this was
Very very wet time of year but we’re going to keep going along this path it’s got a bit of a slope to it and I think at one point there was a tree across the path and it’s something we do have to contend with but they’ve been doing some
Work so this is the common behind and actually it’s very peaceful very peaceful indeed there were very few dog walkers around a bit of Forestry work going on at one point there was a few notices for it and it’s going to bring us out actually in a car park so that’s
Where we Carri the bike over a fallen tree and threw a bit of extra mud uh it’s different with a tandem because if you’ve got a bit of a slope the the back end is likely to step out but it brings us out to the car park on that road and
Then we’re heading off towards Newark so we follow this and this Road’s almost empty all the time very very quiet and and it’s a route that you’ll be familiar with if you followed the to hatchlands and others so we’re often down in this direction so then we go
Straight over at that Junction work our way around the back and we’re heading up towards sort of the back of Ripley and other places like that so under the bridge now that bridge often floods so You’ got to be a little bit careful there and uh we’re going to
Head up here and then we’re going to cross over the A3 we’re turning left near send prison and work our way up very rural very quiet uh quite acceptable really nice little journey and the road surface is excellent throughout all of this except for occasionally there’s a puddle and
You can guarantee at the bottom of the puddle there is a bit of a pothole but this is a really nice ride here again another left turn and now we’re heading back towards crossing over the A3 the new uh near the new Junction you can see all the work going on if you
Look over there so crossing over now and heading towards the old A3 in the center of Ripley here we are traffic’s always bad there and we pushed across and now we’re back on and we’re heading off towards the back of wisley really so we’re going to be crossing the river way
Soon and here we go do have to watch out they would been digging that bit of Road up for a long time uh work our way around that’s getting a bit dark and here we are at nework Bridge cross over the top of nework bridge we’re on New
York Road there a car park back there you could have started at just before the bridge and we work our way around towards the back of pford I think this is Long Hill I can’t remember what the name of the hill is now but work our way up you can see it’s
Getting a bit late in the day this is about the shortest time of the year and car headlamps have come on it’s about 3:00 so we’re heading our way up and now we’re the back of woking we’re going to turn left and get straight onto the
Cycle path that’s over the other side of the road uh and I would recommend that was not far from where the old girl’s grammar used to be we cut across now we’re heading heading towards East Lane uh uh East Hill College Lane I think it’s called and the back end of woking makes
It sound very negative to say the back end of woking uh it’s not the backside of woking it’s a nice part actually got the canal running through it underneath the Railway Bridge past the shops and if you keep going you’re at six Crossroads but we’re going to go
Left here rejoin the canal and it’s a very easy ride back home from here so this is a bit you’ve probably seen before so if you’re thinking of shutting off now then please at least hit like And subscribe to us we could do with a few more subscribers we’ve currently got
60 and that’s great there’s a great number of you but we’d like a few more we’re trying to build up as many decent rides and give you the experience to make good choices uh but anywhere in the country so we’ve got a whole load that
Are waiting to be edited up from um well down the borders of Devon and Cornwall we’ve got some from around chicher quite a lot from around CH quite a lot from around arendel loads from the Yorkshire Dales and Sidonia and Scotland that still haven’t been done we’ve got uh
Cycling tours of the aisle of Aaron and the aisle of mul and quite a few trips in Scotland but here we are heading back now coming through St John’s being through horel into St John’s and you can see how dark it is now into the center
Of St John’s Village which was where we were last time and we’re just going to head around the back and rejoin the canal back along this section so we’re going in reverse to the section that we came up on and you can see it’s completely dark doesn’t show up well on the camera
And we get back to where the house boats are and then we’ll come out around to the top and back through nap Hill Village so here we go underneath the little tunnel all the way around following and now we’re heading to nap Hill Village throw through the back of St
John’s Hermitage rather into low Guilford Road in nap Hill get up to the traffic lights and we turn left as always it’s raining as well as you can see but low Guilford Road parking is a bit of a nuisance here past the a pub that’s been boarded up by working B
Council because they got no money and we’re now heading back up and here is the garabaldi coming up on our left so thank you very much and I will see you on the next ride so please have a look like and subscribe if you can and we’d
