eBikes are gaining popularity, but what is preventing further uptake? Si thinks he has the answer. e-Bikes are just too slow. Should the speed limit be changed to match those in the US? Or is this too dangerous? In other news, the Visma Lease-A-Bike team have been greedy, hogging 6 race wins over the weekend and a police operation saw a bike theft gang put behind (handle)bars.

From teni China welcome to the gcn show welcome to the gcn show coming up this week we’re talking about the big problem with ebikes not the price but whether they are fast enough will you agree with me or will you agree with Dan plus I always thought that meeting a cougar

Would be a good thing but apparently not also confirmed his inability to Sprint oh I broke my ankle didn’t I you can win a gold called Wahoo kick a which is terrifying very strong opinions on zip tie for some reason that smell that is indistinguishable between that and stale urine for

Me this week in a world of cycling we learned that visma Lisa bike are still the force to be reckoned with between them the men’s and women’s teams racked up six wins in just the weekend including an awesome victory for the greatest of all time Mariana Voss yeah

And we also learned that while cows pose the biggest threat to cyclist of any animal worldwide something that may or may not be true of course anyway cyclists in Seattle in the US had to wrestle a mountain lion mid rde after one of their group was attacked yes

According to an officer of the Department of Fish and Wildlife these bicyclists were in the wrong place at the wrong time which is terrifying is basically yeah I always thought that meeting a cougar would be a good thing but apparently not we also learned this week that East scoters have infiltrated

Procycling so this is Rick Basit a regular fixture at the end of Cobble Classics his job effectively is to chaperone the winners towards the podium yeah now that involved him running SLS sprinting to keep up with them on their bikes but as of Sunday in ker bruss ker

He had adopted an e scooter or Eep as Dan found out they were called in Belgium genius although now everyone else has to Sprint even faster to keep up now by Belgian law like many other countries that es scooter isn’t strictly legal most police are of course turning

A blind eye to them whilst policies and regulations are updated for what is still a fairly modern invention yeah ebikes though as we all know are legal but they generally have a speed limit now the interesting comp ation that Dan and I were having have a coffee this

Morning is whether or not ebike speed restrictions should be raised or even removed completely fascinating so here in the UK and in the EU it’s 25 km per hour the limit whilst in the US most places it’s 32ks per hour or 20 milph most places in the EU you do have the

Option of electrical assistance up to 45 kph for something called spelic but for that you’ll need insurance a moped license and a registration plate yeah now Dan and I differ on our opinions here I was the one who brought this up okay cuz I’d seen some stats by TomTom

Remember them barely I’ve for got to say these stats I was talking about are the TomTom traffic index ranking yeah it sounds blooming exciting doesn’t it but you need to bear with us okay now they ranked 387 cities from 55 countries in six continents for traffic conditions

The worst in the world for congestion is London that’s followed by Dublin Toronto Milan and Lima which is the capital of Peru yeah now that is according to the average time it takes to drive 10 km if you look at average speed Toronto improves slightly drops out of the top

Five worst anyway I was looking right at the speeds they are very very low in these worst cities driving so 14k an hour is the average speed in London Lon yeah now when you go down that list you do very quickly end up over 20 km perh

Average and Beyond and so when I was looking at this I thought well of course ebike use isn’t as widespread as perhaps it should be because they’re too slow if they were faster Not only would you get all the other benefits of riding ebik like Health fun environmental economic

Benefits they would also just be the fastest way to travel as well so therefore we should make them a bit faster my initial thought was on the danger that this could then pose by non-experienced ccus being on destricted ebikes without sound too arrogant I kind of feel like I’d be all

Right on a d-restricted e bike because a I’m a fairly confident bike Handler hopefully still and B I’d actually be acutely aware of what a safe riding speed would be in any environment I’m riding in what happened the last time you rode an E Bike oh yes I broke my

Ankle didn’t I yes you did oh that’s just that’s just struck me now um but you can remember what it’s like to go fast can you yes I still have Hills that I sometimes descend so yeah now okay so I’m not suggesting that ebikes be derestricted completely because destricted ebikes excuse me are

Very very fast right just that the speed restrictions are increased to 30k an hour or 20 M hour which is the slowest speed limit for vehicles in many countries now that feels like a good level to me and I think that many city bikes are designed to be easy to ride

I’m not suggesting that someone jumps on a Time Trav bike here but a big comfy bike with big fat tires and nice relaxed handling is super easy at fast speed I guess talking about the danger of this if it is changed it’s not dissimilar to driving in some respects is it in that

Drivers are far more competent and or considerate and or law abiding than some other car drivers but the one constant amongst people driving a vehicle on the road baring a few rep probates of course is that you have to have a license to do

So I you had to pass some sort of theory and practical test in order to get on the road in the first place yeah pass a test and then forget it all in many cases um and certainly don’t drive like you’ve ever been taught however the

Point is there I grant you that one would I be for or against having to have a license plate insurance and some sort of proficiency test in order to ride an ebike proficiency test I’m fine that’s okay that be cool yeah well I think I think I I got a distinction in my

Cycling proficiency test did you I there was an option of a distinction in mine it was either pass or fail you didn’t get one they basically said I was so good that they gave me a distinction wow I don’t know if I believe this I never mentioned this

Before there’s some stories still to come out from my murky past anyway but as for a legislation okay I just think it would put people off right so absolute no to that and it’s something that is brought up regularly by antic cyclist and rightly it’s batted back by everyone whether it’s police governments

Whatever has just been completely nonsensical I’m not against a license plate personally as in if that changes the Restriction like everyone can Rite at anybody restricted to 25 kmph if you want to go faster then you have to have a license plate and I wouldn’t mind

Doing the test as well like you because I also think I would probably pass it with a distinction yeah I I’m not sure it’s I mean it’s not guarantee I did used to crash a lot didn’t I when I was racing it bik speaking of crashes that is the

Really big issue here you are a very experienced cyclist s thanks mate you’re saying I’m old she not experience enough to my phone off oh my goodness how long have you been doing that for uh like 11 years yeah yeah well you are getting old is what I was saying you’re silencing

Your phone but I don’t think you’d appreciate what it’s like for many people that are new to cying bit like me trying to do cross country skiing for example the stats don’t lie a story on our website about a study from the US showed that head injuries among e-bikers

Has increased 49 fold in 5 years W yes more people are on ebikes now but the rise suggests they are more dangerous yeah now the authors of the study we should say say that ebiking isn’t dangerous it’s just that helmet use is too low or that us ebikes are perhaps

Too fast maybe but even the European ones in the wrong hands can of course be dangerous the studies showed how there’s been a huge rise in the fatalities among the over 60s due to ebikes yeah again though that study also shows that it’s down to a lack of helmet use something

That is not popular in the Netherlands where that study came from because they aren’t typically needed but yes I take your point there is a risk I guess to being able to ride a little bit faster than so I was right is what you say E Bike speed limits are

Correct well no yes I mean probably they are aren’t they I just feel that more people would use ebikes instead of driving which is a very good thing plus I also think that people could feel more confident being able to go at the same speed as motorized traffic and even in

Turbo mode on an ebike it’s not like jumping in an F1 car right the power from an ebike is very controllable and it you don’t have to go fast and have you’re comfortable with it would you ride one an ebike if it went faster I’d be tempted with a 45 kph

Speed Pedic with a license plate and insurance goes the thing for me is what would the cost of the insurance be that would been a big deciding factor who would have guessed it D tight ass Lloyd it’s only question mark is cost well I kind of feel like I need to defend

Myself here I’m not tight I just appreciate really good value for money isn’t that what time people say probably yeah don’t waste it hear me out though right I kind of have to work out how many extra Journeys I Do by bike and therefore whether or not I could justify

The extra outlay of the insurance I’d also have to take into account the cost of the bike in the first place I guess because I haven’t got when I use lra as you know which is like to be far more than my current car is worth okay well

That’s fair enough actually like those are legitimate reasons they’re the kind of reasons that you make that anyone would make before a purchase I need to start a spread she is what I’m saying I might step SL step slightly further than me there are times for me right when I

Would choose to commute to work by train instead of cycling various different reasons and I actually would choose an ebike on a lot of those occasions I think if it assisted me up to 45k an hour if it did what would be quicker train or bike at 45k an hour well I

Think actually it would depend on whether or not I could control my sweating levels on a speed pedot on the train is it no no so so the train is about 30 minutes door too right a bit less but I don’t have to like get changed have a

Shower when I get there if I could ride a speed pedac at 45k an hour and not need a shower when I got there I reckon it’d be close cuz my personal best on a bicycle is or 29 minutes 55 seconds door to door and that was at 40K an hour

Average speed very specific yeah but I definitely needed a share after that well for me I would say that there are not that many many Journeys now that I’m thinking about it that I would do on a faster ebike instead of a car so our local town is within walking distance

Really close uh there are only a few occasions outside of that where I’m traveling to a place that’s I guess close enough to get to by bike uh but far enough away not to walk to it and on your own without a dog or a kid exactly okay well we’re going to throw

It out to you lot actually uh we always appreciate your views and comments we always learn a lot as well about how things are different in different parts of the world and from people in different circumstances so let us know whether you think ebike speed limits are

Too slow should they be faster if so why if not why not as well so uh yeah I’ll be very interested to know there’ll be some varying opinions on this for sure I would expect so yeah but but yeah get involved we look forward to reading your

Comments and now it’s time for cycling shorts cycling shorts now and I’m going to start with a little shout out to oano you might remember if you watched last week’s show that we looked at his data from winning the hyen peraso race and marveled at both his incredible power

Output and also the fact that he wasn’t an exceptional once in a generation talent but it wasn’t just pronouncing his name that you got wrong side was it he confirmed his hidden talent at the weekend with a Podium and the Very prestigious ker Brussels ker but unfortunately he also confirmed his

Inability to Sprint ah bad luck ehy he could at least have done what Christen forner did in oml harand on the same day she soloed to Victory from 65 kmet out um and it was a victory that may or may not have been Possible only due to her

Pock star trooper helmet do you know what I might consider wearing one if it meant winning like a semi-classic like she’s just done I would wear leopard prce Speedos if it meant winning a semi classic but alas you still need talent as well as fancy Tech or spangly Speedos

Um unless of course it’s an ebike uh which can be so much fun whilst you’re doing it um as you have seen in fact if you watched Hank and me riding the new cargo Adventure bikes from turn the bike was released last week it’s called the orox it is a go

Anywhere anytime carry anything kind of bike and we had an absolute blast on our winter bike packing trip riding them just out of Interest how much chili did you put in Hank’s dinner it wasn’t me actually can you hear that evil laugh I can in the background yeah

So that uh is Stefan our filmmaker who said that we would need a few spoonfuls of this Chipotle paste teaspoon that he recommended no dessert um and uh anyway yes it was perhaps a little bit more than was palatable um the bike is unbelievable by the way it can carry up

To 210 kilos that is a lot it is a lot and and the takeaway stat was between me and Hank we could carry the same volume of stuff as a Range Rover Sport really yep 510 lers I think it was blimy and that’s not like we had racks to spare

Honestly it’s unbelievable incredible um and then you have these giant tires that just roll over anything it’s not a bike to replace a bike it’s a bike to replace a car your car yeah some good news from here in the UK road.cc reported that a successful police operation is resulted

In sentencing and in some cases jail time for a bike theft gang that’s right they used a bait bike we talked about this a couple of weeks ago right yeah in uh in La Long Beach somewhere was there wasn’t it um anyway so the police laid

This bait Bike by the end of their shift four people have been arrested and £ 130,000 of Stolen Bikes were uncovered pretty good that is that’s not bad is it and a big list of priorities for underfunded police forces stolen bites come quite a long way down the order of

Course but this bust apparently saw bike thefts fall from 68 per month to just seven yeah in this one bit of London that’s crazy isn’t it yeah they were fairly prolific these guys anyway there we go that’s good news isn’t it it’s really good news yeah um but also

Frustrating that we can’t there can’t be more of that sort of stuff we should put some police out there to bust people that steal my K’s I think that’s perfectly legal no angle grinders are needed well you don’t know might be D restricted ebike so well

Yeah I mean we probably do know don’t yeah I think we do um we’ve got some research now uh that won’t surprise anyone frankly but we’re going to tell you about it anyway the European cyclist Federation have been mining an absolute Trove of data from a huge European

Commission survey into quality of life the reason they’ been doing that is because one of the questions or a few of them are about cycling basically yeah they’ve shown that there is a correlation between cycling infrastructure and cycling rates the message being build the bike lanes and

The people will cycle also though you can see from the data that cities with more bike infrastructure are also the ones with higher perception of public spaces the ECF European cyclist Federation so they can’t say from their research why that is but perhaps they are linked that’s right yeah I mean you

Can kind of see why right fewer cars well I mean all of that made sense it did yeah well yeah certainly the participation thing but fewer cars makes places nicer yep not specifically that bike Lanes look pretty I think it’s probably true fair call is it right some

More racing news now and I quite like this story I’m not going to lie a team in the US is being sanctioned after the manager asked the team mechanic to pretend to be a rider get dressed up put on a face mask and sign on to the race

In order for the team to have enough Riders to be allowed to start yes the manager Danny van alter a familiar name to many in the USA has received a 2-year ban and the mechanic has been banned until September of this year yeah I love it brilliantly bizarre you know I it was

A bizarre story when I read that today totally I like it when weird stuff like this happens um anyway we shall finish with a bit of news from zift those of you who watched our presenter race at the weekend will know all about the zift games but for those of you who’ve saved

That video to watch at a later date zift are offering a monthlong festival of competition in March which they’ve called the zift games and which they say will be the largest virtual event ever held Adidas Wahoo Oakley are the the name sponsoring the event which is open

To everybody you can win a gold Wahoo kicker bike Cy I mean I don’t know whether it’s literally made out of gold suspect not but still I mean getting a kick a bike would be amazing but if it was a sprayed gold that’d be cool well

At least they stay in your home don’t they but that’ be too bling for for me to go out and about with yeah but that’s it you be you just know about every time you got on your indoor trainer you’d be like yeah anyway there’s also

$10,000 up for grabs in the pro events Yeah so basically there withi games there are three types of races okay uh there’s the Sprint race there’s the Epic race which is like proper not neither of these sound up my street at the moment so I’m not entirely sure you’d like the

Third one either which is the climb event uh so the pros like riding or racing up um SE to Sky at Alto wift um and then Sprint event like shorter races that’s like a you know you’ve got to progress through to the final basically anyway there’s races for pros and

There’s races for the whff communi as well so everyone is invited to turn up and do do some racing I’m going to give it give it a proper yeah yeah is there any kind of prize for best DS well I mean as I’d be that good at

That either as long as you don’t get a mechanic to sign up you won’t get banned let’s put it that way but anyway I might get a pro to sign on as a mechanic a pseudonym H yeah I tell you what there’s not many pro cyclists I trust to

Actually set up a bike for me no no I mean as in a a pro to sort of just pretend that they’re some random pretend that they’re downlo mechanic yes hack forward SL bodge of the week now actually just before we get on to hack for/ bodge you might have noticed

We are sporting some brand new t-shirts there’s quite a big race being held in Tuscany this coming Saturday two races in fact and a sport Eve on Sunday and we are celebrating with these new designs which you can find over at Global cycling network.com shop at the start of

It actually shop. Global cycling network.com along with a few other designs there as well your support would be very much appreciated speaking of kom’s being stolen that was one of yours was it it was I know quite a long time ago now already what that you set it F

Well I say it’s a fading memory it’s not really I mean you set it before stra was invented but W van art took it off you it last year or year before three oh really that’s why I’m seeing time is passing quickly isn’t it right anyway

Back to the matter in hand our first hack or bod we will decide in a minute comes in from Malcolm over in Sweden after climbing to the top of stones head scna in Sweden my daughter and I found a saddle on top of a post fastened on a

Rock Hackle bodge our legs were tied so we say hack I mean it is literally a saddle on top of a post stuck into a rock isn’t it y uh amazing view I mean like like unless you’re on a bike I wouldn’t say a saddle is necessarily the

Most comfortable no I mean these are better than a saddle use these stools to sit on but I mean there’s something like quite quirky no about it yeah seeing it look it’s like an old Brooks style one with springs on the back isn’t it so perhaps comfier than your average yeah I

Mean they said it was appreciated didn’t they cuz they were tired they said hack well it’s either that or a rock though isn’t it hack or Rock why do no one put a sofa there hack or Rock I’m going to go with hack I’ll go hack as well there

You go all right we got things off to a good start uh Chris sent this next one in uh Chris with no surname from Philadelphia in the USA I could understand this is a quick fix he says but there was not a cloud in the sky and

This had clearly been left on for a rainy day and it appears to be a plastic biscuit TR yeah biscuit tray gaffet taped onto the back of a saddle to act as like an ass saver I mean if you’ve gone to the trouble of gaffet taping a

Biscuit m empty biscuit tray to your bike for when it’s raining you might as well leave it on for the next time it rains right well I did with Chris on this one you have time to think about it after doing a a bodge like this but if

It’s for a day where it’s raining you haven’t got yourself anything prepared well yeah I mean could just get one of these though an ass saver with gcn written on it yes you could well actually you can get that free if you buy our maintenance

Book okay well we got that down here as well that’s why it was left there for you I think so there we go at least someone knows what going On’s proper ass saver for free by buying the Jon road bike maintenance uh book I don’t know

Whether is more effective that r saer as in like an actual R saer but it does look better doesn’t it looks a lot better I’m going bdge yeah no I’m going to go bdge uh I mean gaffet tape is uh I mean it’s not as bad as zip ties but

It’s pretty bad yes it is saying gaffet tape is not as bad as zip ties well you’re less likely to injure yourself I hate zip tie anyway very strong opinions on zip ties I really do next up this came in from biraa wizu over in Indonesia uh I make my own carbon fiber

Rear deria in a cage from a carbon fiber plate that I bought online for $5 and I shape it with drill and Dr and this saves me 16 G of weight and I can make two of them from one plate that is cool very good yeah like I’m already saying

Hack yeah I am 16 G saved for five bucks well $250 in fact I see I like the old anodized jockey Wheels as well yeah that’s super cool reminds me of my mountain bike days that is super I’ve only you could replace both sides with with carbon fiber that would

Be that would be that be 32 G there were there about Yeah well yeah I mean once you once you buying sheets of carbon fiber there’s no limits to what you can like put on your bike do your own handlebars and everything why not I’m joke that was joke I think that’s great

That’s a hack for it’s a definite hack for me that one we’ll finish up this week with this one from Nick and Bristol close to side having run out of small vases for spring flowers we have made use of one of our old beadon uh now used

For an old thing got to be a hack right uh no that is a bodge yeah I mean I mean it’s obviously lovely that you’ve got daffodils in your house but um sat in a old this this is quite similar to the first one for me that that’s all right

If you realize that all the other VES are are already currently in use until the next day go out to a charity shop get one more cheap vs that looks good that is a good point actually not a beat on yeah I mean you don’t need spend mega

Bucks on VES I know it’s not a doesn’t need to be a long-term solution cuz those flowers aren’t going to last that long but you every time you look at those flowers you’re not going to see the flowers you’re going to see you’re going to see the water bottle that

They’re stuck in yeah I agree actually and given that a charity shop vs is probably cheaper than a water bottle yeah you know it really doesn’t make any sense all I’m really sorry for that one Nick um given that you are a local to uh

To us I’m going to say bodge bod for me as well yeah uh don’t forget it’s now upload. globaly network.com that you need to go to to upload your hacks and your budges and you’re welcome to the gcn shows you want to hear something really weird right you know the small

Daffodils that called like narcissi whatever uh most people I think think they smell really nice uh for some reason that smell that is indistinguishable between that and stale urine for me no yeah 100% I walk into the room like oh my God why is that smell and yeah I look around I’m

Like oh it’s them narcissi again weird yeah I hate this time of year so yeah they’re banned from my house CU it makes it smell a Wei two new stories today s yeah well that one is a weird one isn’t it I’m not going to lie if that makes

Into the show as well I’m pretty surprised it’s time now for caption competition that part of the show you get a chance to get your hands on a coveted gcn Camel Back water bottle uh that currently doesn’t say gcn on it but we got an update they’ve been shipped

Have they yep shipped or Air Freight shipped okay so yeah but I mean as long as there’s no blockage in the you know yeah it will be all right so yeah they’re on their way on their way this was the photo that we gave you last week um This was um Chris

Hamilton pulling quite the face isn’t he really yeah he he’s got a proper gape on his mouth trying to suck as much air in as he possibly can and on the climb at the front of a group our winner this week is at I like Poland 2637 who put Chris Hamilton saying carb

Back it does actually look like he’s in the middle of shouting carb back do you remember there was that scientific study uh that said that you absorbed more oxygen if you stuck your tongue out don’t when you had your mouth yeah there was like that’s why all the French Pros

Were sticking their tongues out yeah apparently and it was was it disproven I can’t remember I it must have been because otherwise everyone would well this is it yeah what with that and your Pock helmet you’d be um you’d be going way quicker we once did a caption competition for Thomas faclair

Was T didn’t we and they had to cut it because we weren’t allowed to use the caption that we came up with it was honestly it was the funniest thing Dan has ever said on this show the best caption and it got cut yeah anyway

Moving on to this week I’ll get in touch on Facebook by the way I love Poland uh with your address and we’ll get a bottle sent out to you yeah this week’s photo is of Wal vanart on the podium of ker brussles ker from Sunday complete with

Bouquet of flowers that might smell of we uh and a cuddly donkey underneath his right arm I will get you started uh please welcome the latest ass saver wal vard there you go I mean when I saw W holding a donkey SL ass I thought that that is Rip for

Some good uh I’m pretty sure I might have used a similar caption in the past because they always have those donkeys at ker oh it’s brilliant yeah if you think you can beat Dan then uh put your witty caption in the comments section down below and we will pick a winner next

Week we will shortly let you know what’s coming up on gcn through to Sunday but first up we’ve got some comments starting as ever from some underneath last week’s show Neil Daniel 8232 get Killian on the Presa roster so good to have him on he was a legend on the 30

And 30 rides uh he that he led loads of band and created a chilled atmosphere and there were quite a few comments along similar lines quite annoying frankly that someone doesn’t present that much just come straight in off the bat and is good he really yeah I mean I

Did my best to make him look rubbish mate intimidate him yeah basically obviously um didn’t work just yeah although kilan himself got involved um in the comments to say I thought Killian Murphy the famous actor was doing a better job than this of representing us Killians spelt with a sea and I actually

Have some stats for this surprise surprise in 2002 before Killian Murphy was famous there were 99 Killians born in Ireland that year spelled with a c and a 100 Killians spelled with a K but in 2022 thanks to Killians Murphy and Kelly there were 316 Killians with a c

Born in Ireland and only 36 Killians with a K so um so I think what kilan would like you to know is that his name is spelled with a with a c silly basically is just think slian and then you get there the things that that guy

Can come up with in terms of just ridiculous like sometimes I write to him he don’t happen to know this this or this and within an instant he can’t be just going to look it up it’s stuff you can’t find online and he just comes back with it he must have spreadsheets Galore

I’m I’m mildly fascinated with the with the baby names top 100 um yeah basically Simon are you trying to say that you’re on the same wavelength as kilia no I’m just saying that that my name has plummeted so far out of the pop you’re going sound old soon then yeah yeah yeah

Basically like my my name is like you know I don’t know what’s like an uncool name Barbara yeah basically Simon offended every Barbara watching yeah so yeah I think no I just saying there’s certain names where you you just you get aent they go in and out of fashion don’t

They yeah and I think there was like one Simon christened in the UK last year just that uncool now I haven’t got my computer on silent either to amateur all right these next comments came underneath the video that s talked about earlier where Hank got a mouthful of

World’s largest sunglasses for you sir if you so wish well I mean they were on my face for quite a lot of it but but yeah when I took them off there was actually a dedicated compartment that I used to store said sunglasses so yeah it was pretty cool uh under the presenter

Race um there was a lot there was a lot of love for olly Bridgewood rightly so because that was quite the performance um I’d pick this one out though Seer said being a huge olle fan since joining gcn I was almost brought to tears when he accomplished this what a story he’s

Brought us love it also cudos to Alex and uh S I think that is for the efforts in this well done all so so yeah thanks very much for that seer performance and race there from english- speaking gcn wasn’t it B Melisa bike of gcn well it

Was it went off it went our way uh poor old sebass was on his own was he yeah he was on his own and basically he like I wouldn’t have but against him but you know anyway there we go also on the same video pep 8691 the only disappointing

Part of this was that it wasn’t narrated by Dan who can’t even speak properly doesn’t write that that’s me saying that um sitting in a comfy lounging chair with his feet up sipping on a beer that would have been instant classic it would actually it would have been good um and

Well didn’t even realize he had that background as well as all of the jumps he does now I mean it might explain a lot about his skills yes and power I grew up B no I didn’t uh Thursday is e Road Bike versus e gravel bike yes uh OE

And Alex talk you through the differences uh Friday how much does rim width affect your tires so uh a bit nerdy this one but also I’m really proud of this mate I’ve invented a device that allows you to ride a bike without knowing what the bike is or what’s on it bodge that’s

Good manate honestly it’s brilliant it’s been blind testing is something we want to do for ages and I’ve invented something now c yeah no check it out on Friday um on Saturday Connor has got hands on the world’s biggest bike uh as in the biggest bike that you can buy

    1. I feel like one problem with e-bikes is the bigger speed difference between cyclists. My 80-year-old (Dutch) grandmother used to ride her regular bike EVERYWHERE. Now she finds herself increasingly taking the bus. Not because of age, but because she doesn't feel comfortable around (or on) the e-bikes going past her everywhere. The mix of regular bikes and e-bikes on the same road seems like a perfect recipe for disaster. It's such a shame, because the everyday physical activity is so important.

    2. e-Bike commuter from Germany:
      door2door by… car: 28km 30-60min; bike 33km 1h15min; bike+public 12.5km+?? 60-90min
I own a 25kph limited e-Bike. But for going faster I would need insurance by 60 Euro/year and a licenseplate. This is fair. Automatically I would be banned from bike-only roads and pedestrian/bike shared roads. This is an issue to me. Going 45 and being overtaken by to close cars at 55kph??
I, as someone who rides ~800km per month, have had overtaking cars even if I was going above speedlimit already (me 33 at 30 allowed). BUT I would be much happier and feeling safer to be allowed 30kph non-licensed and 50kph licensed. Better overall traffic flow imho.

    3. Reg plates take you on the road to complusory insurance, helmet wearing and public scrutiny. There don't seem to be too many of the public who understand what a current legal e bike is. There are a lot of illegal ones near me that are basically motor bikes and the police can't deal with them because of the territory (lots of footpaths etc.) I have come across apparently legal e bikes? which have extraordinary turns of speed.! As your standard road bike can often be seen travelling on the flat at 25mph in large groups, I don't see an increase in ebike speed limit to 20mph as a problem and would help up hills in inner cities, where exists, your standard impatient motorist in ever greater numbers. Any cyclist using our roads needs training and road sense and e bikes are no different. As an ebike user for nearly 8 years now, I would like 20mph assistance, but unlimited is a motor bike basically and there are laws, supposed to be kept, about their use already.

    4. Certainly, road ebikes are too slow. On social rides, people on eBikes can keep up fine on hills. As soon as they hit the flats the motor cuts out, and they can't keep up with the rest of the group.

    5. As a 72-year old who now occasionally tops a heady 20kph, I am too slow to go riding with my mates. I tried an electric MTB last year and was mightily impressed. Firstly, when you didn't pedal, it didn't produce power. (One setting added 60% power to whatever I produced.) So, climbing the dirt trails in Tollymore Forest was quite definitely a workout but allowed my to ride with a significantly stronger rider. So, great. The big BUT is that if I wanted to ride with my triathlon mates out on the road, an upper limit of 25kph would restrict who I could ride with on the flat.

    6. Ok, so what Si is proposing here is actually an E-Moped? The definition for a moped (UK) is this…

A moped (category AM) is defined as having a maximum design speed over 25km/h (15.5mph) but not exceeding 45 km/h (28 mph); or a light quadricycle with an unladen weight not more than 350kg and up to 45km/h.

So would this turn the e-bike into a moped?

If that were to be the case, under British law, this means you would need at least a provisional licence and also age restriction applies….

Mopeds. You must first get a provisional licence and complete CBT if you want to ride a moped. The way moped entitlements are shown on your licence have changed, but you still need to be 16 to ride one. The rules are different if you already have a car driving licence.

If I have misunderstood these categories then please correct my understanding.

    7. Why instead of trying to make traffic faster for commuting, build and environment that attractive for people to commute by human power means without be in a rush?

    8. I would love to invite you to NYC to experience the Wild West of e-bikes. Our bike lanes are full of high-speed e-bikes—from the large and unwieldy pedal-assist Citibikes which go up to 18mph/28kph, to faster throttle bikes & mopeds which are illegal but completely unregulated. I realize you are not advocating for throttle bikes but they do give a taste of what higher-speed bikes feel like. ALL these bikes have drastically altered the tempo and mood of our bike lanes to something much more frenetic. Being passed at 18mph by an unskilled rider on a 70lb tank feels VERY different from being passed at 18mph by a roadie on a carbon bike or a messenger on a fixie. I understand the desire to get a little more boost out of your pedal-assist, especially on country roads where you’re only competing for space with cars, but as an exhausted city rider all I can say is be careful what you wish for!

    9. I'm in the U.S. and been riding a "Class 3" pedal assisted "e-bike" for more than 3 years now, on gravel trail and paved road, and can't imagine I'd appreciate / enjoy the bike as much if it was any slower / less powerful…also believe that speed limit signs would go a long way to ride more safely on dedicated bike trails…that said…I believe that e-mountain bikes are more of a problem…IMHO…

    10. I understand that this is a cycling show, so the topics reflect it. However, talking about this before we speed-limit cars to 130km/h (highest legal speed anywhere) seems like a distraction :). Also, everyone is free to descend or cycle as fast as they deem appropriate, 25kph isn't a speed that's hard to exceed on your own, or on a mild downhill. Not sure we see a great number of injuries/deaths stemming from that. Did the studies correct for higher uptake of cycling due to the new appeal of e-bikes? This would get more unskilled cyclists out on the roads (who wouldn't be there on normal bikes) and these people are likely more prone to crash/injury regardless of the bike they use (or a scooter, or inline skates, skateboard, etc.).

    11. The GCN audience is probably used to riding more quickly than the average person. I think 25 kph is about right (even though I personally sometimes find it frustrating). The idea, I think, of e-bikes is to make ordinary cycling more accessible to ordinary people, not to make ordinary cyclists into super-humans. However, I can see that there might be a need for some sort of “e-moped” category, which, as mentioned in the programme, doesn’t seem to exist in the UK. There could be an interesting debate about what those might be, and the licensing, etc., required to use them.

    12. Bike paths here have 20 km/ limits on average. Big wide cargo e bikes do not need to go as fast as your road bike or your car.
Hugely varying skills, land widths and bike sizes just sound like a recipe for more accidents. They can replace cars, they do not have to be cars. Disagree with Si

    13. E-bikes can be extremely hard on brakes, depending on how they're ridden. Lots of e-bike riders aren't super tuned into bike maintenance, and I'd bet that's a big source of risk (having serviced several ebikes for friends and family).

    14. Wooo 16 whole grams saved! I'm looking at a kit kat bar… 45 G. so you save the weight of less than 3 fingers of a kit kat. definitely gonna generate 25 more watts with that

    15. In Copenhagen most e-bike users are seemingly uexpierienced at bike handling, and as it is now pose a danger to other cyclists, pedestrians and themselves. Increasing the speed limit would thus be quite foolish.
But there might be a case for raising the limit outside cities.
Re: Last week's show. Si, in Copenhagen ringing your bell it the polite thing to do, if you want to pass soneone. Yelling out would indeed be frowned upon.

    16. I think the speed limits are too low. There are no 20mph zones that I've ever seen in the US. People often drive well over the speed limit as well. Being able to get around and off the streets more quickly would make me far more comfortable riding and irritate the aggressive drivers less. I ride a touring ebike, and am far more experienced than most cyclists I encounter. I would not put delimited ebikes in the hands of one pereinced riders. Hitting a pedestrian or another cyclist with an ebike can be fatal. They're not toys.

    17. I’m in NL and had a speed pedelec which I recently sold because I don’t need to do those 20-40km journeys that are the sweet spot for those bikes any more. That thing was FAST. For shorter journeys a regular e-bike is far more practical. I also used to think that e-bike limits should go up to 32km/hr like in the US, but having seen all the older riders and kids adopting them here now I’ve changed my mind. I happily cruise at 25km/hr now on my regular e-bike with my toddler on the back, and don’t mind at all that I’d be faster on my gravel bike.

    18. the upper allowed limit of 12.5 mph is already fast enough for E-bikes. Faster is just more dangerous, also time to ban E-bikes from off road riding. They damage trails.

    19. I ride a Trek 520 touring bicycle to and from work here in Medford Oregon USA. Round trip I ride about 5 miles per day. It is mostly flat so I can arrive to wok without sweating. Excellent video guys.

    20. If you remove or increase the speed restrictions on so called e-bikes then they become motorbikes & should require training a licence, insurance and vehicle tax. Calling them e-bikes is an attempt to pretend they are not motorbikes to avoid regulation put in for safety reasons. Like with alcohol people say drugs and alcohol rather than drugs like alcohol so they can pretend they aren't drug users

    21. Thanks for a great show. You were really on top form. As for e-bikes, I’m not saying I can even average 25 kph over a long ride, but I can easily hit 25 kph and sustain that for a while, so even for a slowpoke like me, the 25 kph speed limit is a real show stopper. To even consider the expense of an e-bike it would need a speed limit higher than I could average for, say, a 4-minute effort. There’s the conundrum, though, I guess. An e-bike giving people of any skill and fitness level speeds they can’t really produce themselves can be seen as dangerous even if that might be the only motivation to get an e-bike in the first place.

    22. New Zealand road ebike road limit is 45 KPH… but I see a noticeable number travelling faster than that, perhaps 50 to 60 KPH, which means they're modified by de-restriction. Traffic police don't stop and inspect them that I've noticed. Far worse are the e-skateboards with a hand controller for the rider and e scooters. These can travel 60kph on roads without trouble, and are clearly not legal, but again I've never seen one stopped by traffic police. Perhaps there aren't enough police, or they don't care, which could be equally likely. Generally e bikes of high power shouldn't be allowed in push bike spaces, but they are and it can be dangerous. Just being on the road in NZ on a push bike is dangerous, which means few commute by bike.

    23. you know……..about 90% of e-bike owners that i know of they have all doctored their e-bikes to go faster, either with software or a magnet, so i guess that they are not fast enough, people are obviously prepared to do this regardless of the law

    24. It’s better to smile, a silent champion, and have people think you’re an ass, then to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Variation of Mark Twain quotation.

    25. For the UK – the 250W power limit is unnecessary if the 25kph speed limit exists. 'I have heard that' some hills need 1500W or higher to maintain sensible speeds. But 'somebody I know' managed to wrap their inner tube around their cassette on a pebbly beach the other day so be careful out there! And having the assistance cut off at 25kph is great for a fitness ride, above that speed you can pedal as hard as you like.
