    Today we look at another 10 Less Travelled European Cities that might not be at the top of everybody’s list for a short visit, but are definitely worth a visit, especially if you’d also like to avoid the inevitable crowds of the major cities.
    Each of these cities offers a unique glimpse into the diverse tapestry of European culture and history. They’re destinations that avoid the well-trodden path, inviting you to delve deeper, to seek out the unexpected, and to truly connect with the spirit of Europe.
    They are hidden gems, patiently waiting to be discovered, promising an experience that is as enriching as it is unforgettable.

    Unique glimpse into the diverse tapestry of European culture  and history. They’re hidden gems waiting to be discovered, promising an experience that is as  enriching as it is unforgettable. Today we’re starting off with York   in England. I think York is an underrated city,  that many people might not immediately consider  

    When thinking of a short city break. Yet York is one of Britain’s most   beautiful cities. Its Roman and Viking  heritage with medieval influences have   given York a unique character, making  it a treasure trove of historic charm.  The city’s architecture is a testament to its rich past. You’ll find half-timbered  

    Houses along The Shambles, one of the  best-preserved medieval streets in the world.  It is said that the Shambles was the inspiration  behind “Diagon Alley”, the famous Street in the   Harry Potter films. You’ll know exactly what I mean if you’re a Harry Potter fan and spend  

    Any time exploring the Shambles! The jewel in York’s crown is the   majestic York Minster, Northern Europe’s largest gothic cathedral, which stands as   a beacon of York’s enduring spirit. York doesn’t just boast of history,   it lets you experience it. From walking  along the ancient city walls to exploring  

    The Jorvik Viking Centre, York offers a  tangible connection to the annals of time.  Venture into its quaint cobblestone streets,  delve into its vibrant history, and let its   timeless charm captivate you. York is a city  that invites you to relive its glorious past.  Next we experience the vibrant  culture and stunning city of Palermo,  

    Sicily’s captivating capital. This Mediterranean jewel, nestled   between mountains and the sea, is an intoxicating  blend of ancient grandeur and contemporary charm.  Stroll down its narrow, winding streets, and  you’ll encounter a vivid tapestry of life.  It is a must to wander through the  narrow streets of the city’s markets,  

    Such as the bustling Ballarò and Capo.  They’re a riot of colour and noise, offering   everything from fresh produce to antiques. Here, the air is heavy with the scent of   citrus and sizzling street food, hinting  at Palermo’s rich gastronomic heritage.  Speaking of food, the city’s  cuisine is a feast for the senses. 

    Whether it’s a simple slice of ‘sfincione’,  the local take on pizza, or a more elaborate   ‘caponata’, a sweet-sour eggplant dish, Palermo’s  food scene is sure to delight your palate.  Must-sees in Palermo are the  Norman Palace and Palatine Chapel,   showcasing the exquisite Norman architecture. Then there’s the magnificent Palermo Cathedral,  

    An interesting mix of styles  including Norman, Gothic and Baroque.  Teatro Massimo is the largest opera house in Italy, and one of the largest in Europe,   renowned for its grandeur and acoustics. And if you’re up for a thrill, visit the   Capuchin Catacombs, an eerie yet fascinating  underground burial site with mummified

With its breathtaking scenery,   from the sun-drenched beaches to  the imposing Mount Pellegrino,  Palermo is a city that indulges all your senses.  Our next port of call is Bilbao, capital  of the Basque Country in Northern Spain.

    Bilbao is a city where every corner is a canvas, every street an exhibition. It houses world-class   museums like the Guggenheim, a sculptural masterpiece, a titan of titanium, glass,   and limestone, showcasing contemporary art that challenges and inspires.  In contrast, the Fine Arts Museum caters to those with a taste for the traditional,  

    Offering a splendid array of Basque,  Spanish, and European art spanning   from the middle ages to the 20th century. Explore the charming narrow streets of the   Old Town, called Casco Viejo, visit traditional shops and enjoy pintxos, the Basque version of   tapas, in the bustling Plaza Nueva. The cityscape itself is studded with  

    Innovative architecture, breathing life into Bilbao’s industrial past. Structures like   the Zubizuri Bridge and the Iberdrola Tower punctuate the skyline, turning the city into   an open-air museum. Admire the stunning neoclassical architecture of the Arriaga   Theatre, one of the oldest theatres in Spain. And of course, don’t miss the Bilbao Cathedral  

    Of Santiago. This Gothic-style cathedral dates back to the 14th century and features intricate   architecture and beautiful stained glass windows.     Next we discover Riga, the Baltic pearl that is a feast for the eyes and the soul. Located on the banks of the Daugava River, the Latvian capital is a hidden  treasure waiting to be explored.  Its heart, the charming Old Town, is  a labyrinth of medieval cobblestone  

    Streets where each turn reveals a new surprise  – be it a quaint café, a vibrant marketplace,   or a historic church. Here you’ll also find the House of the Blackheads and Riga Cathedral. Head to the Art Nouveau District to  admire the remarkable architecture,  

    Particularly along Alberta and Elizabetes  Streets. They are a visual treat that adds a   unique character to Riga’s urban landscape. Riga Central Market is Europe’s largest   market housed in five former Zeppelin hangars,  offering a variety of goods and local delicacies.  Also, you can explore the history  and architecture of Riga Castle,  

    Which is also the official  residence of Latvia’s President.  And pay homage to Latvia’s independence at  the iconic Freedom Monument on Freedom Square.  But what truly sets Riga apart  is its rich cultural scene.  From folk music festivals to contemporary art  exhibitions, the city is a pulsating hub of  

    Creativity that celebrates its roots  while looking forward to the future.  Riga is a city that charms you  with its timeless elegance.  We now move further north on the Baltic Sea  to explore Helsinki, where Nordic charm meets   urban sophistication. The Finnish capital is a celebration of design and a culinary delight. 

    Every corner of the city breathes creativity,  especially in the design district.  Here, you’ll find a myriad of  boutiques, galleries, and workshops,   each showcasing Finland’s unique take  on contemporary and traditional design.  But Helsinki’s appeal doesn’t  stop at its aesthetics.  At Helsinki Market Square, explore local food, handicrafts, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere  

    Of this lively market. Try fresh seafood to innovative Nordic fusion dishes in trendy   eateries – there’s a flavour for every palate. And let’s not forget Helsinki’s breathtaking   archipelago. With over three hundred islands offering serene landscapes and picturesque   views, it’s an oasis amidst the urban hustle. Seurasaaari Open-Air Museum, for instance, is  

    An outdoor museum set on a beautiful island where you can experience Finnish culture and history.  Also see the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress: A Unesco Heritage site with fantastic sea views.  And Helsinki Cathedral: an iconic neoclassical landmark located on Senate Square.  Helsinki is a city that combines  nature’s splendour with urban delights. 

    A true Nordic wonder, it’s a place where you can immerse yourself in design,   indulge in culinary adventures, and  relish the tranquillity of island life.”  We now return to southern Europe and immerse ourselves in the warm hues and rich flavours   of Toulouse, France’s Pink City. Known for its distinctive red-brick architecture,  

    Toulouse bathes in a rosy glow as the sun sets, earning its affectionate nickname.  To mention some of the Must-sees of Toulouse, there’s the Saint-Sernin Basilica: A remarkable   Romanesque church, famous for its architecture and status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The main square of Toulouse, Place du Capitole, featuring the impressive Capitole building and  

    Surrounded by cafes and shops. And for the Jacobin Convent:   A stunning medieval monastery known for its unique architecture and historical significance  But it’s not just the pink façades that draw visitors in. Toulouse is a gastronomic powerhouse,   boasting a culinary scene that rivals even Paris. From foie gras to cassoulet, the local cuisine is  

    A testament to the region’s  rich agricultural heritage.  Art lovers, too, will find a home in Toulouse. The city’s lively arts scene, marked by galleries and   street art, thrives amidst the stunning  backdrop of centuries-old architecture.  From the Renaissance masterpieces at the Musée des Augustins to the contemporary exhibitions  

    At Les Abattoirs, Toulouse is a city that celebrates its past while embracing the new.  So, whether you’re a foodie, an art enthusiast, or simply a lover of beautiful cities,   Toulouse is a city that captivates  you with its vibrant character.  And now to the East of Europe and to  Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia,  

    Where East meets West. Skopje embodies a stunning blend of cultures, a testament   to its rich history.     And the chatter of merchant bargaining. The Old Bazaar, Stara Carsija, is one of the oldest and   largest bazaars in the Balkans. It’s a sensory delight, a whirl of colours, sounds, and scents   that encapsulates the city’s lively spirit. Must-sees in Skopje include Skopje Fortress,  

    Dating back to the 6th century and  offering panoramic views of the city.  Stone Bridge, a historic Ottoman Bridge spanning the Vardar River connecting   the Old Bazaar to the modern city centre. Also, Mother Theresa House, dedicated to the life   and work of the Nobel Prize-winning humanitarian  Mother Theresa who was born in Skopje. 

    But Skopje’s allure doesn’t end with  its urban heart. Beyond the city limits,   you’ll find picturesque landscapes that invite exploration. From the serene beauty of Lake Matka   to the panoramic views atop Vodno Mountain, the natural treasures of Skopje provide a tranquil   contrast to its bustling city life.     With its eclectic charm. Next up we experience the magnetic allure of Cologne, a city that sits on  the banks of the Rhine. A city of many faces,   Cologne offers a unique blend of ancient and modern, tradition and innovation.  At the heart of the city stands  the imposing Cologne Cathedral,  

    A Gothic masterpiece that has been watching over the city for over seven hundred years. A UNESCO   World Heritage site, this stunning cathedral is a must-see for its architectural grandeur.  But Cologne is far from just its  cathedral. The city is a vibrant art hub,  

    Boasting a myriad of galleries, studios, and street art that reflect its creative spirit.  And let’s not forget the famous Cologne beer culture. The city’s love for the brew is palpable,   with traditional beer halls and modern craft breweries serving up the city’s signature drink,   Kölsch, in slender, cylindrical glasses.
