The river on which the city stands is a tributary of the Thames. Its length is more than 100 kilometers. The river artery is quite long, and therefore water sports are developed on it. So, the water surface has long become a popular leisure place for amateurs and professional athletes. Here they go in for rowing, organize competitions in canoes and kayaks.
The medieval majestic palace (Archbishop’s Palace) rises on the embankment. It was built in the 14th century for the Archbishop of Canterbury. In it, he stopped for a short rest during a trip from London to Canterbury. Now the palace is used most often for secular purposes. Large-scale celebrations, pompous anniversaries, luxurious weddings are held in its halls.
Near the episcopal palace rises the Church of All Saints (All Saints Church). It was built around the same time as Archbishop’s Palace. Inside the temple is a memorial to the Washington family – the ancestors of George Washington, the first president of the United States.
Leisurely walks along the river are carried out by two small boats with catchy names – the Allington Beauty and the Kent Lady. A bar is open on board. The Medway attracts not only athletes and lovers of river walks. On the shore, there are often anglers who are engaged in amateur fishing.
The imposing white building is occupied by Kent County Council. This is where all decisions regarding the South East of England are made. Under the roof of the building there is a coat of arms depicting a white horse on a bright red background. Along the building, in front of its facade, there is an alley with trees, the roots of which are covered with an openwork metal grate. They simultaneously perform both a decorative function and a protective one.
In the historical center of the city, not far from the ancient buildings, there is a cannon taken by the British army as a trophy in Sevastopol during the Crimean War. On the pedestrian street Bank Street, old small houses built in the 15th-17th centuries have been preserved. In different parts of the city there are pubs – traditional, as well as with a sports bias, where football fans gather.
Fremlin Walk is notable for its numerous cafes and boutiques. It leads to a large shopping complex. The old mansion from the 16th century houses the city museum with free admission. Its halls and exhibitions introduce the history and traditions, flora and fauna, archeology and geology of Kent
