I’ve been working on this one for quite a while. About a year, to be exact. I really feel as though this one move I cover in the vid can help riders (like myself) who battle with jumping confidence. What do you think?

Big things are a-brewin’. New bikes and new peoples!

Ah jump tutorial videos how to jump i mean it’s gotta be the most published mountain bike tutorial on the internet right just so many tips so many suggestions and if you’re anything like me after all those tips and endless youtube videos that i’ve watched and articles that i’ve

Read it still felt to me as i was flying up to that next big jump that the jump and my bike were working like a pair of tag team wrestlers to take me down to the ground and all the while i was just trying to remember tip number 47 from

The last tutorial i watched it just wasn’t working for me until one day a little while back something clicked and completely changed the way that i thought about hitting jumps and we are talking about one technique one movement one single thing to remember that will have you jumping more

Confidently over any type of jump at any speed this is a different type of how to jump video so before we go any further let’s all just try and forget about the 1798 tips and tricks about jumping we have had rammed into our heads over the last few years

And let’s just be logical about this for a second okay so when i’m all geared up i am six times heavier than my bike 600 percent more mass right here than right here so if we’re talking about you know mass and physics here when you’re barreling down the trail

Heading up the face of that next jump what do you think is going to make the most impact for how that jump is gonna go is it gonna be your bike or you yeah it’s you and the mass of your body you’re the one that should be in control

And you should be leading your bike over that jump but if you’re heading up that jump and you know those forces that you feel as you’re going up the ramp of that jump if you’re allowing those forces to dictate where the mass of your body goes over your bike whether it you know

Presses you into the back you’re probably gonna get bucked or if it presses you too far in front and you’re not controlling it well you’re probably just gonna pencil straight up into the air but if you actually use the weight of your torso to control the situation

If you’re the one leading your bike over that jump no matter how big it is or how steep it is or how fast you’re going if you’re the one in control then you’ve just unlocked a lifetime of jump line fun and here is how you do it

You gotta stand up to the gym you gotta stand up to the jump you gotta stand up to the jump you gotta stand up to the jump got it got it okay so what do i mean when i say stand up to the jump well i mean it in both

Senses of the phrase so you’re gonna stand up to the jump and put yourself into control by putting just as much force down into this jump as it’s pressing back up to you and you do that by standing straight up as you go up the

Face of the jump so as you start rolling up the face of the jump you go from kind of a ready position you know arms and legs bent to purposefully and powerfully standing straight up as you go up the lip of that jump and by that i mean

Standing up perpendicular to the ground and the timing of this couldn’t be more simple the moment you start going up the ramp that’s when you start the standing motion and by the time you get to the very very top of that jump or what they

Call the lip of the jump right at that moment by then you want to be fully outstretched fully standing position right as you get to the top of that jump arms extended legs extended just as you get to the top and one important thing to keep in mind is that you’re not you

Know jumping back like this and you’re not jumping forward like that you’re not standing up in any of those kinds of directions you are standing straight up perpendicular to the ground so this is a part that kind of blew my mind and frankly it took all the stress and the

Fear out of hitting steeper bigger jumps no matter how steep or how mellow the face of that jump is you do the exact same motion with your body no matter what all you do is you stand straight up you’re hitting a super mellow blue rated jump you stand straight up perpendicular

To the ground are you hitting like a really lippy black diamond rated jump like the one over there same thing you stand straight up perpendicular to the ground every single time so but of course as you probably know by now between a steep jump or a mellow jump it

Just feels different going off of it with your bike right but what that really comes down to is the fact that your bike’s angle going up the jump is gonna change a lot but yours isn’t and so if you’re hitting like a mellow blue rated jump and it’s more of like a chill

Jump face to it your bike doesn’t have that much angle going off that jump and you’re standing straight up so you’re a little bit further away from your handlebars whereas like this black ray to jump over this way that’s super super steep on that lip your body’s still

Doing the same thing you’re just standing straight up perpendicular to the ground but of course your bike is moving up that steep face and now sometimes you’ll find that you know your front wheel is in front of your face and your handlebar is right here but it’s

Still always the same motion for your body you’re just standing straight up no matter what your bike needs to do now i mentioned before about equalizing that pressure pressing back into the jump as you go up the ramp and i want to just mention that one more time because this

Whole stand up to the jump idea covers two extremely important bases one is that body position and putting yourself in a spot where you’re telling your bike what’s up as you go over the jump and not the other way around and the other half of it is getting that pressure

Applied into the face of the jump and equalizing that pressure the pressure that’s being put on you you’re pushing right back into the face of that jump now if it’s a faster jump trail with big lippy rampy jumps you’re gonna have to press even harder because well there’s

Gonna be more pressure being applied to you so just kind of keep that in mind of equalizing that pressure between the ramp pressing up on you and you pressing down on the ramp and you should be golden all right so now that i’ve told you what to do i do

Have one very important warning watch your speed so if you’re anything like me then you’ve probably been relying on a little bit of extra momentum to make it from the lip to the landing of the jump in the past and that’s mostly because people that who are a little bit

Uncomfortable on jumps tend to squash the lip a little bit but now that you kind of fast track your jumping technique by standing up to the jump you don’t need as much speed because now you’ve got the pop and i’m giving you this warning because of my own experience when this whole

Stand up to the jump light bulb went off in my head i happened to be in whistler at the time and we were riding some blue rated trails but i decided to take this technique and really test it out on a-line which is a huge black diamond

Very fast jump trail you may have heard of it so i rolled into a-line at the same speed as usual and i promptly massively over sent the first three jumps in a row like right to flat super super scary but after quickly recalibrating my speed to match the

Better technique i had now i went on to have i think probably the most fun awesome a-line lap of my entire life and isn’t that what jumps are supposed to be all about having fun and not stressing about technique one way or the other yeah so get out there stand up to the

Jump and start getting used to all that extra confidence and fun that you’re about to have on every jump on every trail that you hit from now on so let me know if you have any questions and how it’s going for you down in the comment section below if you

    1. AHHH Thanks!
I didn't understand why I was afraid of the uphill jumps on skis and mountain bikes!
Balance the pressure and body perpendicular to the ground!!
      THANKS !!

    2. For me I always end up sideways in the air and I can’t correct it. I broke my collar bone 2 years ago learning how to jump and it’s just made it that much harder. I squish my jumps 100% of the time because it’s the only way I can control my body position. Adding “pop” or standing up in a jump is how I ended up going otb. This winter I’ll be building my own small table top in the yard so I can control everything lol

    3. ii wish i watched a video about jumps before, i got my confidence up , and jumped going 25mph on an uneven jump on an concrete road, hurt bad, 1 month couldnt bend my arm and couldnt walk for like 2 weeks, now i kinda fear my mtb

    4. Good advice? It's what we do in moto. However, do not ever go to 'the end of you rope' or, fully extended. Very bad things happen if you do with MTBs and ALWAYS keep the weight centered, your hands just guide. You lead with your feet.

    5. Once i jumped a mountain bike in Korea and i broke 3 vertebrae, my rt collar bone, and most of my ribs. I now have 1 less rib and 6 vertebrae fused together.

Since then, i no longer have any urge to hit big jumps anymore. Its pointlessly dangerous.

    6. I normally squash the lip a little as you say. I tried to stand up to the jump with arms and legs extended by the time I went off the lip, resulting in a dead sailor and crash. Any tips?

    7. if youre tryong this and still crashing, learn how to manual. I used to teach this to people 'youre basically doing a high standing manual as you take off from a jump, but youre manualling into the ground isnated of onto the rear wheeal.

    8. Bruh, ive been working on jumping, and stand up to the jump works good. Last week was having ride of my life and was singing stand up to the jump in my head and cleared my biggest jump ever. Rolled into the next jump and just sent it hard. Yesterday I had surgery on my collar bone.

    9. This tip changed my life, I hadn't jumped in 30yrs, after two sessions at the jumps, I was about to quit, until I stood up to the jump. The Loam Ranger made it simple.

    10. I was struggling in jumping through the doubles and was trying to make a bunny hop (which I can't make) before someone told me to make a pop and stand up. After my buddy was pushing me to jump again and again I cleared almost all the line of the jumps. So yeah, it works 🙂

    11. Hello there I just bought a used Neuro AL 6 and I can't wait to take it to the bike park for the first time. I like this technique of yours, yet I'm afraid that if I stand on the bike while jumping my feet could come off from the pedals and I could also probably go over the bar? How can I avoid that? Thank you for your video though, very helpful.. cheers!

    12. The irony here is, when my body to bike ratio was 2:1 rather than 6:1, I had no need to watch a YouTube vid. Furthermore, I have a 1:2 ratio with my motorcycle. That last part is a bit apples and oranges. Point being, it's not that simple. However, this vid is a great reminder of the foundation.

    13. This video helped me finally clear a 20 foot table. So simple. Stood up to the jump and noticed I was at least 3 feet higher than usual and sailed right into the landing. Such a great feeling.

    14. my 3 main fears on jumping a bike (I'm a 41 y/o fat dude)

breaking the bike on landing and die,

shooting way too far over the jump and die,

not being fast enough and hit the ground wrong – and of course, die.

    15. it actually helped me but i still have fear about big jumps like steep and doubles and also i still feel like i dont have the full control of my bike
