During the first day of the Active-Norway Biking Hardangerfjord Self-Guided bike tour, my friend Eric Kiraly and I left the comfort of the Fleischers Hotel in Voss, Norway and traveled east on our bicycles toward the tiny town of Ulvik. Along the way, we cycled past a giant waterfall, zipped around an impressive lake, struggled our way up a 6 km uphill ascent, and then roared down a series of switchbacks to the Strand Hotel in Ulvik, Norway, where we checked into our hotel room, ate dinner at the hotel and then called it a night.

This was Eric’s first day of bicycle touring ever… and the furthest he had ever ridden on a bicycle. So it was quite a struggle for Eric, but he pushed through and he did it! I was so proud of Eric for having completed his first day of bicycle touring and I looked forward to the rest of our bicycle touring experience in Norway!

Good morning from Voss Norway today is the real start of our bike tour here in Norway with active Norway calm my friend Eric and I are gonna ride our bikes about 50 kilometres today or so along the lake past the river through the fjords and I just should be good first

Step though we’re staying at the Fleischer’s hotel which is like right on the lake here in Boston Norway we’re gonna go downstairs and get some breakfast you ready yep no you aren’t you got your jeans on so here’s our giant map of Norway this is Bergen where we started this is

Voss where we are now and this is moveth where we’re going today so we’re basically doing this down around this little lake here to this fjord here and then back to whoo thick the rest of the tour goes here over here down here up over here through these islands and then

Back to Bergen so that’s the route we’re following so we are on the road now Eric’s first bike tour we’re still in boss cycling along the edge of the lake here it’s a nice view Erick’s rental bike is making some funny noises now and we don’t know why it

Sounds like the bottom bracket the bottom bracket click I’m a human popsicle right now it is so cold Wow if you like snow is so there are two possible ways to go today a short way that’s like 43 kilometers and a longer way that’s like 50 something kilometers we’re gonna to

Go the longer way which takes us around this lake so that’s what we’re doing now so we’re stopped up the side of the trail now first a quick lunch break here is my lunch I really stacked the container but as much food as I could should be noted that Eric has a pink

Helmet why do you have a pink helmet Eric was the only one I had in my size of the bike shop I call it a pink helmet I think Eric’s calling it salmon color yes he’s calling it red faded red that’s a faded red and I’m calling it a pink

Helmet I don’t have anything hey that’s a big one big for a wild very small otherwise want to try one do it you’re scared what oh you don’t right now dude I swear eat that no why uh-huh why yeah visit why are you running away so your fear of

Eating of wild strawberry is gonna disappear right now and you’re gonna say damn that’s good go grab just Eric just grab one and put it in your mouth it’s a strawberry man it’s good yeah all right sorry yeah tastes like like candy almost another no come on

I wasn’t good no it was good all right you got it well yeah if he Tom all like this now that’s good but it’s raining now so we have our rain jackets on and we’re gonna make our way to the hotel hopefully we’re going up a very small hill right

Now but Eric is struggling he’s walking behind me makes me a little concerned about the rest of the trip because this hill isn’t that big but we’ll see what happens keep going stop taking in the senior Jerry every time you need a break to say oh yes Erie shot

So we’re going up a fairly sizable pass right now it’s really nice not too steep but Eric is certainly struggling he’s very inexperienced on the bike he was saying that this is the I was lightening right there Thunder he was saying that this is the hardest he’s

Ever pushed his body going up this hill so he’s behind me he’s just walking and biking whenever he can I told him to take it slow and just get to the top that’s all that matters you’re making it yeah I mean even walking like you’re making good progress you know what I

Mean so that’s what that’s all that matters keep going forward Erik’s up ahead of me now he’s on his bike and he’s I kind of proud of him that he hasn’t quit good job it was a little longer than I thought it was gonna be it was a six kilometre uphill climb

That’s like close to five miles make a lot of people write to me sometimes I like I’m planning to do thunders miles and pay well you’re going down that’s great this is what Eric came to Norway to see is our room at the Strand Hotel undvik Norway Eric’s waiting with the bikes out

Back there we are maybe just well yeah but I mean you’re for now I want to take some pictures of the room first though so we’re in the hotel you just completed 50 kilometers like that for this you’ve ever ridden on a bike wait how was it mostly get mostly good

Except for that big hill yeah there’s was I hate kilometers yeah six kilometer hill all uphill and it was towards the second half so my legs already a little tired you know like they is they were not okay like maybe yeah I made it the

View and we went down from there it was amazing and I made it all worth it and now where are we the Strand Hotel in all of it Norway yeah there’s an amazing view outside the window yeah it’s pretty awesome more good than that the views

The stuff we saw was pretty great so the big waterfall you have what was your favorite part of today say either going down to the big Walter waterfall or the last Lake to hold it yeah mostly downhill just constantly amazing vistas yeah I think my favorite part was yeah

This last leg and a whole bit like the switchbacks down but even not even the downhill part but the flat part in between the top of the hill and the downhill section I think that was really cool going past the lakes and the waterfalls all around oh definitely it

Was totally flat cycling oh I think that was the best that was like the moment I was like I’m in Norway yeah you know for sure yeah well that’s the end of our first day here biking in Norway Erik survived which is great I thought he did

A really good job tomorrow we have to check the itinerary to see how far we’re going tomorrow but I think it’s like 50 kilometres or so Erik says there’s a ferry I can’t remember but I think there is a ferry so should be a good day it’s

Raining now I think we’re gonna go back to our hotel and sleep well
