A shift of focus briefly as a story has been simmering away for a while regarding what can only be described as a cycling Champions League not to be confused with the track Champions League of course that’s coming back for its fourth edition later this year but Dan

You’ve been looking into this what can you tell us looking into it as much as I can I mean no one knows the facts outside of one cycle as it’s called and anyone that does know the fact has signed an NDA but there have been a few leaks basically what they’re trying to

Do is get a group of teams together and give them some more stability are you with funding because as we all know in cycling teams are entirely relying on sponsorship money and so a team can just disappear after 20 or 30 years there’s an argument counter to that which my

Colleague Kil and Kelly did an article on on our website at gcn so if you look at the current Tour of France teams on average they’ve never been in existence longer but back to one cycling there are rumors that they’re going to get around about 250 million euros of funding from

PI which is what was the golf you know the Le golf which was so controversial over last couple of years they want to create a group of races with about 80 or 90 days which is a mix of current races on the calendar plus a few new events in

There and they’re going to kind of guarantee that the star Riders are all in attendance at these races but like I said the main purpose of this is to create some sort of stability for all of the teams and in some cases for the smaller organizers because with the

Money coming in they’ll all be looking for sponsorships for this series of races so the organizers that are currently standing alone will be Reliant more so on the sponsorship coming in from this new site League Adam Vima had a great season last season but they still struggled to find sponsor

Sponsorship so do you think this could actually be a real positive for the sport I think it can be and it can’t be in a way you know it’s it’s never going to hurt to have more Cy on our TV screens and ultimately that’s what we

All want as fans as people viewing it it’s always going to be great the big issue is that the Tour of France the jro ditalia and the welto hispania mainly the Tor of France that’s where a lot of their sponsors get the money from so for

The team sorry so they invest in teams so they can be shown on the toor of France for the Riders that’s when they need to be at the best cuz that’s where they’re going to get the most publicity so I think with this if this other

League was created it would be a case of right you’ve got to go and do this race because with s’s super leagues there’s a chance to make more money if they won that and took all that prize money that would then just be invested into the

Team to have better Riders at say the tour to France because that’s where the Big Marketing is for them so I think it’s a it’s a good enough idea but ultimately that money is only going to be reinvested into the team to be better at races which is not this new super

League so it’s a very difficult one of is this the right thing to do is it not the right thing to do and ultimately those races might take away their plan that runs into the season into the Tour of France it might overlap with some races which are crucial for the team as

Well for say like this race UAE for team UAE this is an absolutely massive Race So if they put another race on around this time they’re going to take sponsors away from there’s just so many variables with this but ultimately with the with the likes of the to Fran it’s been in

History since cycling began and it’s not going to go anywhere for a long long time such a it’s a really big subject though I mean a lot of cycling fish arst would be upset because they like it as the way it is because they understand it

The as the the way it is but if you’re coming into the sport for the first time it’s incredibly confusing it takes a long time to explain the nuances of the race calendar the tactics this that and the other and so there is a part of me

That does think if you’ve got this set of races where all the biggest Riders come at the same time more often throughout the year you know let’s take the Tour of France this year that’s the first time we’re going to see GAA AOL rogl and vinar all racing at the same

Time would it be better to have more races beforehand you know that’s a question any people at home can answer for themselves maybe that buildup does make the anticipation even better for that race or maybe it will be better to have them competing more often on the

Run up to it it’s very interesting I feel like we could talk about this for quite a long time but let us know what you think about it get in touch at eurosports cyclan we’d love to hear from you

    1. Adam is completely correct, if this initiative is going to be successful, it has to be adopted as a wholistic change across professional cycling. If some of the big organizations (ASO etc.), big races or big teams are left out or choose not to participate, the project will not succeed. Personally, I have doubts, given the incredibly fractured way that professional cycling is organized that enough coordination and agreement between the parties can ever exist…..but then again, that is exactly the argument FOR this type of an initiative. I do feel that any change should encompass both the men's and women's professional tours. If this initiative would only go forward on the men's side, it would be a further blow to the inequality that exists between the men's and women's sides of the sport. The women should not be left out….again.

    2. It’s my first year actively following the cycling season and I have to say that it takes a lot of research and dedication to understand how the races are put together and which are the β€œones to watch”.

But road racing is worth it! I didn’t believe anything outside of the TDF could be interesting, but was I wrong! A firmer structure would ease the passage for newer fans such as a β€œchampions league” structure.
