GCN spent the day with one of cycling’s most enigmatic characters, photographer Camille McMillan, on what is his eighth Tour de France.

Camille McMillan’s work is instantly recognisable. Over the years he has taken us to little known places in the world of cycling, building up a unique portfolio that includes, perhaps most famously, a collaborative book with former pro Michael Barry, Le Metier.

We hear how he turned to cycling photography having moved away from racing himself, and how the buzz of shooting from a motorbike within the peloton replaced the excitement of racing himself.

McMillan also divulges some of the secrets of his work. The thoughts and processes that go into creating his personal style. Sadly, there is no explanation of the french horn.

    1. On the other hand, taking arty photos of people waving at the Tour is a bit silly if there are no photos of the actual Tour. You know, that difficult thing with the riders that the people have come out to see in the first place..

    2. Loved this. If you haven't already, take a look at the book he put out with Tom Southam: Inside Out. A great publication, and only a tenner.

    3. dont be a f*****G digital knob, its not the camera that takes the picture its the photographer. Comments like this deserve no comment so i am the c**t for commenting.

    4. Great video – great to get an insight into this different perspective on sports photography (my preferred perspective). Nice work Camille!

    5. It would be great if you did a video on what it takes to get a media pass to photograph the tour de france or talk about what's possible without it?  I know some areas are just too packed with fans and they jump out in front of you after you have been waiting 3 hours for the peloton to arrive and ruin your shot, if you don't have a prime position, like having a press pass where you can be outside of the barricades to get your shot.
