Welcome to this month’s ask EMB M is where we get to answer all your questions about everything you bikes we’ve got a hell of a show coming up loads of questions and we’re taking a bit of an in-depth look at hybrid ebikes right first question coming in from

Nicholas Duk knee he said is it legal to carry two kids on a bike in the UK I can imagine getting stopped by overzealous members of the fuzz even if it is well I think it depends on the type of bike you’re gonna be riding obviously if

You’re gonna be riding a cargo bike like the turn GSD that is actually designed to be ridden with two children on there but two child seats side by side we can even use a bench seat along it but I don’t think on a standard email bike

It’s gonna be a problem either if you’re using proper seats front and rear it’s also gonna handle a bit different of all that weight on board but it’s not actually going to be illegal what is illegal is to carry a child on a bike see that isn’t designed to be written as

One you know you get these guys that kind of like zip tie a normal bike seat on the top tube if you do get stopped by the police you will actually get you know stern telling off for running that seat that is something you definitely don’t want to do

Mark Collinwood has been in touch and he’s saying great show gents cheers mark what model of the EVOC bag was it that fit Sally though battery now I think you’re all about the backpack that Steve used to the Mont Blanc ride that was the

EVOC trail ride f e and that has a nice zip out section on the bottom that pack which allows the backed backpack to extend therefore you can fit that massive battery and it is huge on the leave oh but a little tip if you do want to shorten that length down at the

Battery you can actually remove a plastic clip on the front of it kind of like the flap with a six mil allen key bolt that endures by the side from a four mil allen key you can actually remove that flap and therefore it’s going to shorten that battery down so if

You are struggling on space maybe try that right john davis has been in touch reverse and he’s been asking can I ride a hybrid ebike off-road I mostly commute but fancy off-road trails into the weekend what’s your thoughts on hybrid ebikes well John us a good question and

It is a little bit more in depth all about hybrid e bikes well the hybrid e bike that tends to have a little bit more bias towards Road kind of ride and it can handle off-road situations but it’s more kind of like 80% Road 20 percent off road and think it makes

It different as well it’s all about the geometry of the bike we’re talking more comfort than aggressive style riding talking sweat back handlebars big high stem just about being comfortable for more Road style riding and of course there’s a component now usually these bike run 700c wheels and tires which

Means it’s exactly the same size as a 29 or so you’re gonna find the gear in on these bikes is more suited towards road use as well it’s gonna be pushing quite a high speed again used for that tarmac use rather than off-road you certainly won’t be climbing any mountains with

That gear and setup and also you can have nice protection on there usually those bikes come with front and rear mud guards too then of course there is the motors now these don’t tend to be as powerful as a full-blown mountain bike version you’re gonna get a tamed our

Motor usually even could be about twenty new to meet is different in talk but some of them do still run that big powerful unit such as a specialized bike still pumps out 90 Newton meters of torque then there’s a battery now a lot of these will come with smaller

Batteries usually around 417 more hours again some of the bigger more expensive bikes will have that full power maybe a 500 watt hour battery in there but they’re all gonna differ and of course the motors well the cheaper bikes will come without rear hub drive which of

Course has all that weight it isn’t quite as efficient as that mid-drive motor but that mid-drive motor will come a bit more expense but you’re gonna have a nice integrated battery into that as well but cost wise well this video like Steve was using for his Welsh adventure

That comes in at 2,400 pounds and that has you know some impressive spec on it it’s got that mid-drive motor already what I mentioned nineteen news meters of torque 500 watt hour battery and of course there’s got our Bluetooth connectivity to it so you can manage all

Those settings within the app but if you fancy something cheaper and look online and we’ve got the Carrera crossfire now this comes in at 1400 pounds the rear hub drive motor it’s got a 417 and what our 417 watt hour battery got a 75 mil travel fork up front it’s quite basic

Component tree but it will definitely do that job of riding on the road and there’s slight off-road adventures – so hybrid I hybrid ebikes are definitely of worth looking at it is something that you want to do a little bit of road maybe a little bit of off-road at the weekends

David walking he sent I can’t understand the cost of an SL it’s got a smaller motor smaller battery therefore should be cheaper other chain forks and saddle a bike versus a thick I understand it to be a Stumpjumper with a small off-the-shelf mid mount motor installed

So hardly any R&D going into project our specialized put in the wool over our eyes well I think we need to break it down and take a look at the facts where you’ve got a base-model levo that’s coming in at four thousand two hundred and fifty pounds and you’ve got the base

Model sls coming up four nine nine nine as well so 750 pounds difference in there but i think what you need to take into account is the specialized leave out sr it’s add a lot of technology going into it you mentioned about the motor being smaller therefore it should

Be cheaper but what you will find with those smaller components and more lightweight components there’s actually a lot more tech and a lot more R&D going into there to make it that much smaller than that much more lighter so therefore it’s gonna be a more expensive another

Thing you think about is a standard base model Stumpjumper that comes in at three thousand four hundred pounds and that hasn’t even got a motor no battery or no like software or tech to go with it so there’s definitely going to be those differences in price but it’s all going

To be reflective in things like the components on the bike the wheels the brakes the drivetrain that’s all going to come in to that price and the base model SL it’s only seven hundred and fifty pounds and as i mentioned that’s gonna make have that difference in all

Those components see how Goodrich has been in touch he says i have a high bike with a yamaha PWX motor do you know if anybody sells a range extender battery for it well i’ve had a quick look online and i can’t actually see a range extender for that bike your best bet

It’s gonna be either find in the second hour battery or maybe a new one from from yamaha and go riding with that in your backpack therefore you can have another 500 watt hour battery that’s meaning you’re gonna get huge range and do some massive rides right frederick

Leaned lined has been in touch you saying what is an e bike seat and what is better with them well guys like ogon and SQ labs have been developing the e bike seat and i think when they first come out a lot of people are like what makes it different well the biggest

Difference is going to be how much float is in that side when you’re out on your bike you spend a lot more time actually sat in the saddle and you’ve got other features on there a lot more pattern sort of layers on there as well so it’s a lot more comfortable

And you’ve got a nice raised arch on the back meaning that when you climb in pushes your weight forward and stops out front wheel lifting up and also gives you something to push against and stop just kind of like sliding off the back when they go and get steep so there are

Some massive differences on those ebike saddles okay James Hutchinson he said I’m really considering getting the email and bike this year nice one this is gonna demo one after lockdown period but my question is about transportation I have a roof carrier from my pedal mountain bike that clamps onto the

Downtube near the bottom bracket obviously that won’t work with an email to bike due to the motor and battery location I’m not changing my roof system or entire car to suit and I don’t want to go rare or towbar mounted as I don’t have one and the bikes components get

Killed from the road muck and exhaust what roof carriers are available for amount of bikes well it’s a pretty great area at the moment most roof racks will only guarantee bikes up to about 20 kilos so with a new bike usually 20 or maybe if you’ve got an SL you’re gonna

Be lighter than that but I mean usually the base of level is about 17 to about 24 kilos so you might scrape into that weight limit if you remove your battery and you front me off on your bike you might be at 20 kilos but that is the

Limit so it’s something that I wouldn’t personally feel comfortable with myself I think if you’re gonna be transporting any bike with that car maybe looking to remove in the wheels and putting it into the boot of your car that way you know it’s going to be secure but there are a

Few other racks on the market I’ve had a quick look around you got the C sucker now this is like a suction cup mount that will fit any car it sucks to the roof then you put your bike on top that as a guarantee to twenty point five kilo so again you can

Be right on that border and it is quite expensive then I know racks now these have got quite a good writer that’s guaranteed to 23 killer shoes should be pretty good with them to have a look for inno racks and again Thule they do loads of different racks again to suit all

Different styles of bikes but they are going to be coming in at 20 kilos so I think if you’re looking at roof racks then maybe in AU racks could be the one for you Geordie iego he says I have a commensal meta power and I want to use it with a home

Trainer these days and lockdown am I gonna damage the frame or the motor running it off for so long no not at all I don’t think there’s any problem with running your ebike with it turned off on a turbo trainer the only thing I can

Think of is maybe one of her slick rear tire on there sort of so that will cut down on the noise on the trainer it’s also going to stop the tire wear but I think for the price of a tire I’d be quite tempted to have a look around on

The second-hand market and try and find a road bike or something like that you can slot in and that could be your go-to turbo trainer bike rather than burning out your e bike on the turbo trainer next one is coming in from Allen Burr and he’s saying could you try putting a

Moto Trials tire on your a bike if you could get a rim or tire to fit it well straightaway the Moto Trials tire that’s 18 inches so it’s going to bring down that back end of the bike is going to drop down geometry you’re gonna drop the

Bottom bracket you gonna slack in the head angle it’s gonna cause a load of bad things I think in a minute with ebike tires and the tech that’s going on well then we’re in a pretty good place and don’t forget you’ve already got a bike fat bikes as

Well so they’re running some big fat tires on there so I don’t think there’s gonna be any advantages just a load of disadvantages from fitting that on our last question coming in from suicide Betty how much harder is it to ride your amounted bike with a motor off in

Comparison to a normal mountain bike well it’s gonna be way harder than a standard mountain bike you’ve got the weight of the bike got the suspension there the drag of those tires you got the weight of the motor and the battery is gonna make that bike really really

Heavy and I think the boss generation 3 motor was notorious for that drag when you got it off or going above that 16 mile per hour limit so you definitely gonna get a hell of a workout on that you’re gonna be riding a Bosch motor with it turned off you want the

Generation 4 that is a really smooth motor and a lot different to the generation free there you go that’s hopefully all your questions are answered for this month don’t forget if you want to get involved hashtag ask EMB n drop your question down in the comments box below and we’ll get back to

    1. Thanks for answering the question Chris. Will order one of those Evoc packs. Keep up the good work and hope you're all keeping well? 👍

    2. Hey, love ur shows and all the great info im getting from u all.
Got a question here, i ride a giant fathom e+3 27.5" 2019 model. Can u tell me if i can put in a 11 or 12 speed cassette in stead of the 11-36 9 speed it came with, would like to upgrade to a 11-42 or 46 with a 38t chainblade upgraded my fork to a rockshox pike for a bargain (450€) and chainblade seems to be a custom directmount as none Will fit, rear hub is a quick release 142mm
Please help would love some more gears please

    3. I've been fully dismayed with an ebike(Stumpjumper Turbo Levo) after 4hrs with my groups of ups and downs trails my battery is empty. So, who said that ebike have more fun.

    4. Can anyone recommend best e-mountain bike for mostly road but bridleways, mild trails etc? Decent speed .Budget £2000 give or take a bit. Anyone done a test on this? 👍🏼

    5. The Levo SL is overpriced, but so is every other specialized bike. If you buy a Specialized you are paying for the name. If you buy a bike based off components you can save a ton of money by going to lesser known brands.

    6. Illegal to carry 2 kids on a bicycle in the UK!? Come here to the netherlands, I think the most I’ve seen personally was a (heavily) pregnant mom with 3 kids in the box of a 2 wheel urban arrow cargo bike with another on a baby seat at the handle bars and another in a toddler seat behind her doing the school run.

    7. Hub drives are really split between geared and direct drive. The geared hubs can be quite light and beat a mid-drive motor for weight, the direct drive hubs are definitely heavier. Geared hub motors also freewheel when unpowered unlike direct drive motors. The video makes it sound like there is only one type of motor hub but they are pretty much split into two distinct classes.

    8. I get it, it is important to please your sponsors. Nevertheless, there are more price points than ultra-cheap junk and quite expensive luxury models. Many bikes by Cube, Focus and Haibike are offering significantly better value. Do not get me wrong, Specialized is a great brand and is offering some great innovations, but you are paying for what you get and the brands mentioned before aren't too bad either.
It is funny how the press and the PR guys in the industry are always pretending that no one cares to spend an extra 20-30 percent for the brand alone when absolutely comparable bikes are available at significantly better price-points. It is as if the pandemic and the related economic depression are just an fantasy. The absolute majority of your target group is feeling the pain and a decent comparable value at whatever price-point is an relevant factor.

    9. Hi, hope you all well. I want to buy an E-bike for 1500 pounds. I using 80proc road and 20 offroad (not jumping). Maybe you can advise me which bike to choose? Hybrid or Mountain (with idea that for mountain bike possible to have additional pair of thinner tires for those just road days) or if not using hard offroad trails is better to choose hybrid?
      2) If I choose the hybrid bike or its enough smaller torque motor let say 42NM and battery 400wh. Or this torque very important if I use 80 proc on roads . Thanks
