The 30 Years War was one of the several Wars of religion that emerged out of the Protestant Reformation with each competing Protestant and Catholic Dynasty fighting against each other to win Thrones and land and while each ruler was motivated by the desire to bring the people closer to God the

Armies made sure to send millions of civilians to him now the Peace of West phalia ended the war in 1648 was based on a series of treaties that were signed in the cities of monster and osbrook in the Holy Roman Empire however one of the stipulations for this peace deal also

Left the prince Bishop Rick of Austin with an odd set of rules for succession with the prince Bishop having to alternate between a Protestant and a Catholic ruler with a Protestant ruler being a hereditary Noble while the Catholic ruler would be a bishop in the Catholic Church things got even more

Interesting when the line of the Protestant Prince Bishops went to Ernest Augustus of the House of Hanover as he was also the husband of Sophia The palatinate this was important because over in England they were also dealing with religious issues tired of having to deal with the conflicts that resulted

From having Catholics in the line of succession to the throne of a largely Protestant country the English Parliament decided to permanently exclude them in 1701 removing at least 57 Catholic Royals who were in line to the English Throne leaving Sophia the platinate a very distant relative of

Queen Anne of Great Britain as the closest Protestant relative on the royal family tree but after Sophia passed away her son was made the new Heir and he would inherit the throne as George the first of Great Britain and Ireland while George’s younger brother Earnest Augustus end up inheriting their

Father’s title becoming the Protestant Prince Bishop of osbrook now according to the rules Ernest was succeeded by a Catholic bishop however since Ernest never got married nor had any legitimate kids the Protestant title of Prince Bishop went to the descendants of George the with the next Protestant to hold the

Title being Prince Frederick a younger son of King George III with Frederick being a great great grand nephew of Ernest but after years of legal and land reforms in the last years of the Holy Roman Empire during the early 1800s the prince Bishop Rick was absorbed into the

Electorate and later Kingdom of Hanover which was ruled by Frederick’s father King George III ending the prince Bishop Rick and a cycle of a Protestant Catholic succession please let me know what you think and if there’s anything I missed or other factors you think were important please feel free to include

    1. I fear those that wish to bring religion into politics would reignite such religious strife that the enlightenment saved the west from. Religion is an identity and you cannot have reasonable public discourse when you argue about peoples identities, everything is an attack on somebody. You get these ridiculous (to modern eyes) identity based "settlements" as the one in the video.

Not to minimize how important to history the peace of westphalia was, it did (mostly) end the religious wars in europe and gave foundation of the modern nation state system we have now. We cannot regress how it was before it.

    2. Ach ja, the "Holy Roman Empire", which was neither holy, nor roman, nor an empire 😅
In German it has the unwieldy name of "Heiliges Römisches Reich Deutscher Nation" xD
Also the map of this thing is bonkers, the poor cartographers!

    3. You should have included the scene form the movie "The madness of King George", where the young Prince Frederick looking at his chest covered by lots of medals and tells his brother that "I discovered today that I'm the Bishop of Osnabrück"
