New York is one of the best-known cities in the world. Some immediately fall in love with it, others hate it. Both have their reasons. In this video I am going to show you how former industrial areas of Manhattan and Brooklyn have changed. But first we will go to the city of Bethlehem,

Where the famous New York skyscrapers come from. We are actually in the place where skyscrapers were born. To build a skyscraper you need steel. Laminated metal. It must be produced somewhere. And the steel was produced here. The Bethlehem Steel company was founded in 1857.

In the 20th century its steel factory was the largest in the world. Besides metal for skyscrapers and the most famous bridges in the USA, they also produced ships and military equipment here. During World War II the company built more than 1,000 ships.

Some say that the production of this factory accelerated the victory of the allies over Germany. First Betlehem Steel became a symbol of US industrial power, and then, of its decline. Since the 1970s, the American industry got behind cheap products from Europe and Asia. In 1995 the plant was shut down, and in 2003

The company ceased to exist. If it weren’t for this factory, New York city, as we know it today, would not exist. It is a story of how the United States turned from an industrial country to what we have here today. A non-industrial country.

Because at some point it could not stand the competition with Germany and Japan. For more than a century Bethlehem was a monotown with a strong dependence on the factory. It can be compared to the Russian city of Vorkuta, that depended fully on the coal mines. When they started closing, people left the town.

And it practically became a ghost. The population of Bethlehem didn’t change much after the factory’s shutdown. When the workers left the plants, tourists came here. There is a concert venue there, which hosts various music festivals, jazz festivals, and other events. But they didn’t fix the industrial zone for the sake of art,

They also opened a hotel, a television studio, offices and a casino here. It was for the slot machines that they built all these thigs. But it seems that the gambling business is not doing very well at the moment. A casino only has a license if they get a certain number of players.

The headquarters of the leading global brands are located here. As well as the UN. And the New York Stock Exchange. At the same time Manhattan is the smallest and most densely populated part of New York. According to the 2020 population census, on 59 square kilometers there are 1.7 million people.

That’s more than 28,000 people per square kilometer. When they were building offices and viaducts, they didn’t think much about the city residents. Business was in the first place. Even the coastal part became a huge industrial zone with ports, warehouses and docks. And that’s not only an access to the Pacific ocean,

Can look untidy. In general, if we talk about cities, in the United States they are mostly dirty, unkempt, they often have poor roads. Basically, they’ve got a lot of problems. So, if you want to see perfect cleanliness and order, you need to go to certain districts or suburbs where rich people live.

There every piece of grass and every bush will be neatly trimmed. There are gardeners everywhere and a lot of money poured into it over there. But if you go to New York, there is a total disorder. Here is a very expensive new building and over there there’s a bad road
