This 1962 man-powered plane, Flying Bicycle (ET Style) or SUMPAC, works using bicycle pedals and was built by Southampton University students for a competition. It was also the first human-powered aircraft to make an officially authenticated take-off and flight.

BRITISH PATHÉ’S STORY
Before television, people came to movie theatres to watch the news. British Pathé was at the forefront of cinematic journalism, blending information with entertainment to popular effect. Over the course of a century, it documented everything from major armed conflicts and seismic political crises to the curious hobbies and eccentric lives of ordinary people. If it happened, British Pathé filmed it.
Now considered to be the finest newsreel archive in the world, British Pathé is a treasure trove of 85,000 films unrivalled in their historical and cultural significance.
British Pathé also represents the Reuters historical collection, which includes more than 136,000 items from the news agencies Gaumont Graphic (1910-1932), Empire News Bulletin (1926-1930), British Paramount (1931-1957), and Gaumont British (1934-1959), as well as Visnews content from 1957 to the end of 1984. All footage can be viewed on the British Pathé website. https://www.britishpathe.com/
The flying bicycle as it is affectionately called is the baby of some of South Hampton University students they built it to win 5,000 pounds offered to the designers of the first completely man powered plane to fly a measured mile they built it with hope in their hearts for the spirit of
The old time pioneers have infected these young people who now wait to discover the result of months of hard work lighting instructor Derek Pickett is helping the students he will besides operating the various controls have to pedal sufficiently to produce a take-off speed requiring two horsepower and sustain half a horsepower throughout the
Flight no easy task when you consider that although the plane is made of nylon and spruce it has a wingspan of 80 feet and weighs somewhere in the region of 100 pounds now comes the nail-biting part Pickett pedals frantically and slowly the flying bicycle latches into the air only a few

Gkgkgkgk hemat energi….
brilliant! good show
The Southampton University Man Powered Air Craft (SUMPAC) is on display at the Solent Sky Museum in Southampton.
My Dad spent many hours calculating the aerodynamics, and weight/balance, and material strengths required for this aircraft.
As an eight year old, I remember being absolutely frozen cold, but at the same time, being totally in awe at what I witnessed.
We went on several different occasions, one of which I recall there were two other man powered aircraft present.
My interest in home built aircraft has remained to this day.
I was so convinced i could fly with cardboard wings from my shed. Gravity convinced me otherwise;(.
Gossamer Albatross from the 1970s… Look it up 😉
That voice, quintessential British news reporting at its finest. 😁👍🏻
The most incredible thing about this: a female engineering graduate in 1962.
Я в !!!??? Липкая лента на гнилом западе была в 1962 г.!!!???

Regenald Perm as pilot ?
My friend tied car springs to his little brother's feet and threw him off the roof – broken leg. Later we tried to build a submarine in the dam – near drowned the little guy. I just wish we had come up with this idea because he was a stong lil fella and would have peddled well..
Guy wearing a vest in a box held together by duct tape, made by a man smoking a cigarette? Sign me up!!!
Im surprised that that was actually doable.
And was that duct tape theyre putting on the plane? Lol
This won't fly
пиздёж!!!
There's an error in the report: The Kremer Prize was 50 000 pounds, not 5 000 pounds. Other than that, excellent report.
Oh, my god! Were they allowed to do that or sooooo!!!
I hate British through the core of my heart…..
Mc cready was the first one to actually do the math.
This looks like it was digitized from the negative and sounds like the original mag reel. Certainly doesn’t sound like 16mm optical track or even Super 16 mag track. Even for negative it’s amazingly clean and free of wandering from pin registration. Very impressive.
When I was a kid I always thought I would have one of these for transportation… and also a jetpack
Num é que o negocio vooou batendo pedau
Заебешся крутить.
All that engineering and research and yet it has the complete worst cockpit design ever in existence.
Good, work should be resumed again for preparing such flying bicycles
Perfect for commuting over miles and miles of treeless prairie.
Cool-looking that's for sure
Seems the record is a little over 70 miles in 1988. interesting no one has beat the record in over 30 years, I guess people must have lost interest in pedal/human powered flight…….I suppose it's more of a "What Can Be Done" thing than any practical purpose……Would've been fun to try back in the days when I was really into cycling though.
the First lift
Класно гражданин в труселях пробежал….Ха…ха…ха…Как скучно было бы на Земле без дураков и клоунов!!!Без обид.
60y later , they still didnt leave a runway
Today you could substitute an electric bike in there,….hang on, I might be onto something here …you heard it here first!
If this worked back In the 60s why do we hear about now-day grants being paid to anyone who can make a human powered aircraft? We’ve just seen that it has already been accomplished! WTH
Amazing, but very short….
It was lifted by the pilot high spirit.
Derek Piggott was the Chief Flying Instructor at Lasham when my brother and I used to go gliding there in the early eighties. Back then he was helping some Japanese blokes with their man powered flying project. Very modest and humble bloke. Only found out about all his achievements many years later. I asked him for some advice on gliding, and he said just make sure that the number of your landings equals the number of your take offs and you should be OK.
it will surely fly, even the pedal powered propeller is not there

Sáng chế hay thật. Tôi cũng có chung đam mê
Human power is cool but I’ve heard you can stick a chainsaw motor to a bike. Imagine how easy it could be to fly
