Filippo Ganna just recently revealed he’s dreaming of the precious double gold at the 2024 Olympic Games, and to achieve his ultimate goal, he’s willing to sacrifice anything. He’s put ambitions like the Tour de France on hold this season, to be able
To perform at his very best at the Olympics. But can Ganna win double gold this summer, with all the other superstars going for it? And what’s his secret strategy to achieve it? See, the Ineos Grenadiers superstar is determined to defend the gold medal in the team pursuit
For Italy in the track cycling event in Paris. But that’s not all. He also hopes to achieve a personal victory by winning a gold medal in the individual time trial. In a recent interview, his only words were: “Gold and gold, that is the dream. Two medals for sure.”
The Italian superstar, who many like to refer to as “Top Ganna”, brought home Olympic gold back in 2021, in the rescheduled Tokyo Games in team pursuit. However, he fell short in the other plan that he had, which was the time trial. The course simply wasn’t ideal
For him, and he had to make do with fifth place. Ironically, later that fall, he won the elite men’s world time trial title in Bruges, confirming his ability to dominate in the discipline. So now, in 2024, the time trial specialist and a top-notch team pursuer is giving his
All to try and win two Olympic gold medals in the City of Lights, and finally bring home the missing gold from 2021. In fact, he’s so dedicated to the Olympics that he’ll miss the traditional start of the Tour de France in Florence, Italy, this summer. Instead,
He’ll be racing in the Giro d’Italia though, so we’ll be able to follow him there. At the Santos Tour Down Under, Ganna admitted that striking the right balance in his schedule was far from easy, but the payoff this could all result into could definitely be worth it. He stated:
“It’s too bad to miss the Tour de France in Italy this year, but the Olympics are the Olympics. With the big goals of the Olympics, I want to try to win again in the Giro to give a big morale before Paris.” Ganna went to the Australian Tour relaxed,
As he sees it as a place of warm climate and low-key races, which was a perfect way to begin a year filled with high pressure and expectations. He claimed that he took six weeks off the bike this winter, and is just now starting to rebuild the base for the bigger goals this summer.
Managing both track and road cycling is not a new challenge for the Italian cyclist from the Lake Maggiore region. He’s been doing it throughout his career, achieving world hour records, winning team pursuit gold medals, securing six individual pursuit world titles, and earning various honors
In road cycling. But he’s well aware that the two disciplines are still something very different. “The track is a different type of race, but when you win, it’s so nice for the heart and head.” Ganna said. “On the track, I race more for the public because it all happens on 250 meters,
And you can feel that passion. On the road, it is so different. It is hard to stay focused for six hours, and try to save something for the last 50 kilometers when you can try to change your life.”
Ganna is coming back to Europe, and he’s going to balance both road and track cycling as part of a carefully planned strategy leading up to the Paris Olympic Games. His 2024 schedule will start with the Volta ao Algarve, Tirreno-Adriatico, Milano-Sanremo, the Tour of the Alps,
And the part that we’re all probably most excited about, the Giro d’Italia. Paris-Roubaix though, is still questionable, since they’ve got some altitude camps and fine-tuning on the track scheduled for that time. Ganna claimed: “We saw in 2021, after
The Giro I did good preparation before Tokyo. We arrived pretty close for the TT. That course was not great for me and we worked a lot, so we think that the same program will be good for me again.”
But when you’re racing both disciplines, the question of which one is more important just begs to be asked, since they’re just so different. One is more of a personal effort, and the other one is where a team with four riders is going towards a common destiny. And Ganna knows this very well:
“For the TT, it is just myself. It’s only you and the bike. You don’t have to think about another three riders. You have all the control in the time trial. In the track it is different, and you have
Four who need to be perfect in the team pursuit.” What’s important though, is that Ganna is optimistic and believes that the outcome will bring two gold medals. He acknowledges it won’t be easy, facing challenges like competing against Remco Evenepoel or the rising UK
Star Josh Tarling in the time trial, as well as competing against other teams in the team pursuit. About that, Ganna said: “The Danish guys are always good, and Team GB is back. We need to work a lot to be competitive with these two big teams. Also Australia. Every team is improving,
And the level is so high.” When he arrives in Paris, Ganna will start by competing in the individual time trial, which is the first cycling event on July 27th. After that, he will participate in the team pursuit during the final days of the
Cycling events from August 5th to 7th. And his ultimate wish is to be in top shape for both. He said: “I want to arrive for 110 percent for the time trial, because it is one week before
The team pursuit. We know if I can arrive in top shape, I can be ready for both. I want to start well with the ITT, and after that I have enough time to arrive for the team pursuit. We need to
Switch the body for the long intensive ride to the short intensive ride. Now I am still young, and I can do both at a really high level. When I see that it’s not possible, maybe I will change my goals in the future.” But then again, 2024 isn’t going to be the last
Time he’s meeting face to face with the Olympics. He made it clear that he’s not shutting the door on returning to the boards again in the 2028 Olympic Games. However, there’s still plenty of other races that will keep him busy in the upcoming years.
Having won 28 professional races, the Italian has already shown that he can be successful in different types of races and on various terrains. He has secured victories in time trials, breakaways, sprints, and one-day classics. But he also said that he’d like to win the yellow jersey,
To wear it one time, and to win a stage in the Tour de France. Additionally, he’d also like to perform well in some spring classics too. Therefore, Ganna is now setting his sights on classic races as his next big goals. Many still think that’s where his potential in road cycling
Lies. Ganna is confident that he can do well in races like Milano-Sanremo and Paris-Roubaix. In the past year, he finished second in San Remo and achieved his best result in four starts at Roubaix, finishing in sixth place. And what this means is that he’s got some unfinished business.
“In the future I would like to come back to Paris-Roubaix with the ambition to win.” Ganna said. “This year we are hoping to arrive in the best condition for the Games. Last year I was close at Roubaix with sixth, so I will need to improve to another level to try to win. For
Sure I will try for one position better at San Remo. Every year it is different. You can come close to winning, or you can get dropped on the capi. It’s one part of the season with Tirreno or
Paris-Nice when you can have a great feeling, or if the weather is bad, you can get sick, and everything goes down the drain. You need a lot of luck to win on the Via Roma.” Some people believe that Ganna’s strong physical abilities and body weight make him well-suited for
Rough cobblestone races. However, Ganna himself admits that he doesn’t have a fondness for the unforgiving cobblestones of the “Hell of the North.” That’s why he claimed that you must be a little crazy to like pavé races, especially the Paris-Roubaix. But he’d still love to win it.
For Ganna, the goal is to get the most out of his body, whether it’s during intense efforts on the track or the longer, more challenging races like the classics or grand tours. “At the end of the day, the suffering is the same, whether it is for one hour, for six hours,
Or for four minutes. In the end, you are suffering.” Ganna said. “You try not to lose your energy or not to lose the concentration, and believe in yourself. You have one life, so you try the maximum in every race.” And this exact mindset is the one he’s
Going to take to the 2024 Olympics, and try to win the promised double gold.
