Hello, it’s Taro. Right now, I came in Redondo Beach. It’s about a 40-45 minute drive from my house. It’s around 10 in the morning, and I’m going to have breakfast with friends soon So, I’ll share that experience with you. I always order custard cakes like Mille-feuille but… Here’s my friend Yūsuke.

I’m Yūsuke, nice to meet you I ordered this sandwich set. It comes with coffee and costs 20 dollars. I always talk about how much it costs… What did you get Yūsuke? I got the smoked salmon and avocado croissant. Sounds good Let’s dig in and chat!

Let’s have a chat. Oh, by the way, he brought some souvenirs for me! Thank you! Let’s open it up and see. It’s ‘Juroku-cha’! It’s not from Japan though. It’s written in English! Yeah, it’s the one they sell here. This was a gift though

This conversation feels like something from ‘Waratte Iitomo’ (an old Japanese TV show)! Smoked Salmon Pari This is so delicious! Smoked Salmon Cheese Pari I think it’s perfect for snacks with alcohol. This is a souvenir from Hokkaido. You went to Hokkaido! Lucky you! This is a secret gift…

Here it is, the classic souvenir, Jagapokkuru.” This is definitely delicious. What is this!? It’s super cute. It was around Halloween when I went back to Japan so I got this at that time. So it’s from Japan! That’s why there’s a mix of Japanese snacks.

Cheese crackers, Kinoko no Yama, and what’s this? There’s also Halloween-like chocolate. Does that mean you encountered Japanese Halloween? I visited in the season. How was it? But, to be honest, I wasn’t really out and about that day. I still haven’t quite gotten used to Japanese Halloween.

But what you’re talking about is like that Halloween in Shibuya, right? It’s strange to celebrate Halloween when there’s no tradition of it, isn’t it? Yeah, exactly, it feels really strange. And hasn’t it been happening more recently? I’ve been in America for nine years now,

And it feels like during that time, that custom has spread. I am from Okinawa, right? In Okinawa, there are military bases, so there have been events like that inside the base. But before, everyone seemed embarrassed about it. Now, it seems like everyone is dressing up and saying ‘trick or treat’.

Still, it’s only a few people, right? Not everyone is doing it. But yeah, it’s probably only happening among certain groups of people, like in Shibuya or Tokyo. But it just doesn’t resonate with me at all. But this year, it seems like it was ultimately restricted.

Yeah, there was an accident before, right? How was Japan? It was good Lucky you.. But this time, it’s not like I haven’t been back for a long time… I went back last New Year’s last time But I stayed for about two weeks, right?

I still felt like I wanted to go back at least once a year. When you go back once a year, are there any changes? There haven’t been any changes, but even though it’s been a while since I came back

It feels like I can update things in a good way. It’s easier to update, you know? If too much time passes between visits, you have to catch up on a lot of things, like information.

But when there isn’t that much time between visits, it’s easier to remember how things were last time. Where did you visit? In Chiba. My parents live in Chiba. And then Hokkaido? I decided to go to Hokkaido at the last minute.

My friend is there now, so it felt like I went to visit them. Not in summer, but in autumn. How was Hokkaido in autumn? It was awesome. I got to see salmon swimming upstream. Upstream? Salmon swimming upriver, you know?

It was that time of year, and I saw a lot of salmon. There were tons of them in the river. It was amazing! I’ve only seen that on NHK (public broadcasting). It really felt like that. Seems like you’re struggling to eat it… hey didn’t cut it in half for you, Normally, they cut it in half. Maybe that’s how French people eat it. That’s wild. Around the time you went, some people around me also went to Japan, and recently, one of my coworkers went too. She said the food was delicious, and added to say ‘back to Japan to gain weight’ Not gaining weight would be a sin, right? You can eat it here too, but it’s not the same, you know? It’s really expensive at proper places. That’s true. I did feel like prices have gone up, but it’s still cheap. Did you feel like prices have gone up? Yeah, they did.

It was like “Did it go up that much, like it used to be in the past?” Not as much as in LA though, right? Plus, the yen was weak. I didn’t worry about the prices. That was lucky. I feel bad saying this as a Japanese person but..

It’s a better deal coming from here, right? This is a recent story, but I sent a condolence telegram to Japan because my grandfather passed away It was around 3600 yen in Japanese currency. But with the current weak yen, it was only about $26~27.

That felt like a really good deal. Even while I was in Japan, I used my American credit card to settle in dollars, so it was quite advantageous. You were able to use American cards for payments? I had no issues using them.

Did you feel like you were returning to Japan or going there? That’s a good question. It’s kind of a mix. There’s the feeling of going back, but also a bit of a traveler’s sensation. So, it’s like half and half. When I last returned from Japan to LA,

I felt settled when I saw the scenery of LA It felt like, ‘Ah, I’m back.’ Conversely, when I returned from Japan to LA, I felt more like I was returning, because LA is my base.

My hometown has changed so much compared to before, so maybe I don’t feel as connected to it anymore. Will I end up like Urashima Taro when I go back next time? You’re right! But do you still like LA? Yeah, I do. Overall, I feel like I can live a more human-like life here. A human-like life… like what? Well, mainly in terms of work. When I was in Japan, it was just so busy, you know?

You often post on Instagram Stories about how tough it was. It was like I was sacrificing my life. What was the work like? Overtime was normal. Maybe now Japan has become stricter about that, and the situation has changed quite a bit,

But back then, seven years ago, there was overtime every day, and even if it finished early, it would be around 7 PM. So it was just a cycle of making dinner and going to bed. I didn’t lack personal time, but I didn’t do anything special either,

And I was too tired to do anything anyway, so I didn’t do anything. So going out with friends on weekends became the only way to relieve stress. It was fun, but it wasn’t healthy.

Basically, it’s a general company, so it’s a 9 to 5 shift. And yet, finishing at 7 was considered early. There were probably a lot of people who had it much tougher and of course, there were probably people who worked at places where there was hardly any overtime

But still, wasn’t it normal to work overtime? In Japan, I think Japan still has places like that. Maybe. Woking in the US is generally more clear-cut with on/off, and my current job really has no overtime, and I have plenty of personal time. Do you know anyone around you who does YouTube?

As far as I know, there’s no one. Do you want to collaborate with someone? the reason I started YouTube was because my friend started it. She said, ‘you should try it too,’ so I started. Then I often talked to her, and we realized that even though there are so many YouTubers, there aren’t many around us. That’s true I hardly see any. It feels kind of uncomfortable, you know, because we can’t encourage each other.

It would be nice to give each other advice or think about things together, but there’s no one nearby to do that with. But there are probably a lot of people doing YouTube that we don’t know about.

To some extent, you need to have some level of popularity, or it’s hard to tell who’s doing it. I actually have a channel myself. I made it because I was bored during the pandemic. But I didn’t show up my face, they’re just those short ones,

It was short videos like 4 or 5 minutes. I only uploaded videos that were less than 5 minutes, but some people subscribed to me like two people! You should do more! So I was surprised that there were people watching. I feel that way too. That there are people watching.

But in my case, for example, I actively promoted it to acquaintances. But I feel a good kind of pressure. There are a lot of different kinds of YouTube channels, right? There are regular Vlogs, and of course, there are people who have specific themes. Sometimes regular Vlogs are more interesting, aren’t they? Because you can’t peek into someone’s life. Somehow, don’t you feel like you’re living through those videos?

I’ve only seen a little bit, but you like England, right? And there was someone who lived there, and he should have returned to Japan, but even though it’s not an interesting city, I admire it, so I can’t help but watch it.

That’s right, it might be something you’re used to, but for viewers, it should look fresh and interesting. That’s for sure. I said goodbye to him and came back to the car. Today, we went a little far and had breakfast. I’ll go back home now, it’s a little after 12 PM,

I’m gonna study and edit videos at Panera Bread again. Thank you for watching the video this time. Let’s see again in the next video. I’m embarrassed! I can never say ‘Please subscribe to my channel!’ I feel bad. Let’s reshoot it! Sure sure!
