Cycling through Portugal’s Alentejo region is like stepping into the past, to a time where age-old quiet rolling countrysides of wheat, olive trees, vineyards, and cork tree groves ruled. Here, the food, like the pace, is anything but fast, with tasty delicacies including aged cheeses and ham produced from black footed pigs that devour acorns falling from the region’s oak trees. It’s also the seat of the world’s cork production, still harvested by hand at the same slow pace that’s been followed for generations. On our Portugal bike tour, we’ll adopt the local pace and unwind at one luxurious hotel for the course of our vacation. From delectable meals to Roman temples in ancient towns like Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where city walls and ruins of Roman baths still remain, this is where time stands still, and the hustle and bustle of everyday life are long forgotten.
