How Denmark earned itself an entire archipelago of islands at poker and why their capital Copenhagen is battling it out with Plovdiv for the longest pedestrian zone. Today I’ll tell you about the home of the Lego and their quirks.

Stay to the end to find out why you shouldn’t get drunk on a bike there. Before that, give a quick shout-out in the comments about which next country you’d like me to make a fact video about. You decide entirely. And now I’m going to speak their language.

And now are you ready for your head to go boom? Well, it sounds similar to Dutch but nothing alike. 50 amazing facts about Denmark then you will buy Lego. 1. The Kingdom of Denmark is the third major Scandinavian country alongside Norway and Sweden, about which by the way we also have 50 facts.

I say major because there is still a debate about whether Finland is also in the Scandinavian cluster. 2. Denmark consists mainly of the Southland peninsula which lies to the north of Germany. It is also involved in the administration of Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

But relations there are a bit complicated. At the moment, the Danish run their foreign policy. 3. You know Greenland is actually the largest island on Earth if of course you don’t count Antarctica or Australia which are also continents and until 2009 Greenland was heavily dependent on Denmark. But then there was a referendum

And the huge island broke off as an autonomous self-governing province. 4. So the territory of Denmark is now officially considered to be about 43,000 square kilometers which is more or less three times smaller than Bulgaria.

It is made up of the peninsula of Jutland, as I have already told you, but also of 474 other islands. On land, however, it borders only one country, Germany. Wherever you stand in Denmark you will not be further than 52 kilometres from the coast.

    5. In 1946 the United States of America tried to buy Greenland for 100 million dollars but the Danish refused. By the way, as a joke, if they had sold it back then for some cash now they wouldn’t have given it away for free with the referendum.

    6. The population of Denmark is about 6 million people who are scattered on a plain whose highest point is 172 meters above sea level. Basically, they are like the Dutch. They are greatly threatened by rising ocean levels. 7. Denmark used to be the home of the Vikings and many historians believe

That this is where their entire culture started which eventually scattered and terrorized the old continent for hundreds of years. 8. Did you know that settlements throughout Europe that end in “by” or “thorpe” such as Whitby or Scunthorpe were actually founded by the Vikings? These were the endings they used to name their settlements.

    9. The capital of Denmark is the lovely city of Copenhagen which is located on the island of Zealand in the eastern part of the country just across the Swedish Malmö. The population of Copenhagen is one and a half million which means that 25% of all people in Denmark live there.

    10. Sweden and Denmark are connected by a bridge which at one time just went underwater. You must have seen a picture of it somewhere. The whole distance is 12 kilometers as at one time you just enter a 4-kilometer underwater tunnel and pop out in Copenhagen, there are no borders.

    11. The interesting thing about Copenhagen is that more than half of its inhabitants transport by bicycle every single day. It’s also the most preferred transport in Denmark despite its somewhat harsher climate. Probably preferred, though, because in Denmark having your own car is considered a luxury.

The average annual tax on this type of vehicle in 2022 reached up to 5,000 BGN per year. For Bulgaria as far as I looked at the stats it is around 300 BGN. Imagine 5,000 versus 300. 13. Overall Denmark is a rich but very expensive country. VAT there is 25% if you will.

They have categories like books and public transport or cultural events like theatres which are exempt from VAT so zero percent. Otherwise, the income tax there can be as high as 57%. That is, more than half your salary goes to the state. Here it’s 10% which is heaven.

    14. However, healthcare and education are completely free. The state takes but also gives. It’s not like here it just takes and sinks the money somewhere without a trace. That is why the Danes are happy to pay their taxes. In 2022 Denmark was the country with the lowest corruption in the whole of Europe.

We are way down in that ranking. 15. Denmark’s currency is the Danish krone. And this is what their biggest denominations of 500 and 1000 kroner look like. At the moment 1 krone is 26 cents. That is, this 1000 krone note is equivalent to about 260 BGN.

Although they are in the European Union and meet the criteria for the euro area they refuse to introduce the euro as a currency. Ozone.bg/clash. This here is my link for Ozone.bg. If you want to support my channel enter it in your browser before any purchase from there

Otherwise, the promo code for Ardes.bg remains THECLASHERS. 16. Did you know that Disneyland amusement parks are actually copied from Tivoli Park in Copenhagen?

Walt Disney decided to make parks similar to it after visiting Tivoli and spending a whole day there. 17. In reality, dear friends, Denmark is home to the first amusement park in the entire world. It’s called Bakken. People started gathering there as early as 1583 and the park is still open to this day.

While it gives off that old-school feel it is quite modernized. 18. A moment ago I mentioned to you the Faroe Islands which are part of Denmark but lie above the UK or a full 1,000 miles away. Did you know they were won at poker?

    19. In 1814 the King of Denmark played poker with the King of Norway. The two of them got so far ahead with the wine and the Norwegian bet the islands all in. However, his hand was weaker and so the King of Denmark won them.

Can you imagine getting up for work in the morning and the mayor announcing that you are no longer Norwegian but Danish because my King got drunk and lost the whole archipelago? 20. The Danes claim the longest continuous pedestrian street in Europe. It’s called the Stroget.

However, I don’t know where they are going with this because the one officially recognized as the longest is in Plovdiv. From the beginning of the post office square to the end of the pedestrian bridge in the city on the hills

Is 1 kilometer and 800 meters, while the Stroget in Copenhagen is 1.5 kilometers. 21. There is no way you don’t know Hans Christian Andersen, the most famous Danish writer. He’s kind of like Ivan Vazov to them. He’s the guy behind The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, and a whole bunch of others.

    22. Danes are famous for their confectionery. Surely you’ve tasted the Danish butter biscuits in whose round metal boxes the entire world keeps their sewing kit. 23. In Denmark they have super unconventional holidays. For example, for them, the summer solstice around June 22 is a very big thing and the whole nation celebrates.

There in the north during this day which is the longest of the year the daylight lasts until 11-12 in the evening. The Danes, like other northern peoples, believe in trolls. In many places, you can see huge figures made by artists in tribute to them. In general, trolls are quite common in their folklore.

    25. Danish is part of the North Germanic languages and is something between Scandinavian and German even sounding a bit like Dutch as well. However, they have some of those weird letters like æ ø å. Here, just hear what it sounds like. So we’re in the middle.

Give a quick thumbs up in support and let’s get on with more interesting facts about Denmark. 26. Did you know there is no word for please in Danish? You obviously don’t get asked for anything there. Instead, they use “være så venlig” which translates literally as be so good. This phrase replaces “please”.

    27. In the Scandinavian style, the Danish flag is bisected by two features. But did you know that this actually appears to be one of the oldest unchanged flags in the entire history of the world? It was adopted back in 1219 and is now over 800 years old.

By the way, Denmark also appears as one of the oldest monarchies in the world. 28. Did you know that Lego was invented in Denmark by Ole Kirk Kristiansen in 1949? “Le go” from Latin translates as put together. And from a derivative Danish “play well”. Originally his factory was for prefabricated wooden toys

But then switched to plastic and made a real furore. 29. On warm days the metropolitans have a beach on the harbour in Copenhagen and don’t care at all. In fact, the water there is so clean you can swim in it. It is not polluted like other city harbors around the world.

    30. Did you know that the first Ministry of the Environment was established in Denmark in 1971? Already 50 years ago this country started to promote green thinking and nature conservation. 31. Separately, they were also the first to appoint a woman as minister back in 1924. This is something totally unthinkable for those times.

    31. Generally in Denmark equality between all people is honored and discrimination is reduced to very low levels. 32. Did you know that handball was invented in Denmark back in 1897? Two physics teachers wrote the rules one afternoon and decided to test them with their students.

Today, handball is one of the more famous sports in the world. 33. The national dish of Denmark is called Stegt Flæsk and is literally fried pork breast with boiled potatoes covered with gravy. By the way, their cuisine is called New Nordic and they have some pretty interesting stuff.

    34. The Danes are extreme fans of quality food. In the capital Copenhagen alone there are 15 restaurants with at least one Michelin star. This one next to me is the specialty of the most famous of them. I’ve been to a Michelin-starred restaurant in Holland twice, and both times we ate doughnuts afterward.

    35. Statistics show that every second day in Denmark is rainy. A bit depressing but it rains 175 days a year. Rarely do they get several consecutive days of sunshine. 36. Everybody who’s into beer knows Danish Carlsberg. Since they are next to the Germans

They have strong roots in beer production and are big consumers. 36. It is not rare to see 15-year-olds having a beer with their parents of course. 37. But never get drunk on a bike in Denmark.

Not that they will take your license but the fine is 500 BGN and can make you test for alcohol. Also, don’t cross a street just like that. The fine is 250 BGN. Seriously they only cross at the allowed places and wait for the light to turn green.

Even when the street is under repair and not a single car is on it as you can see from the video. People obey their laws. That is. Subscribe to the channel if you want more facts like this or get one of my books.

In the top mysteries series, we write about Bulgaria, The world, and the universe. Some pretty interesting mysteries you will find here. They are available in bookstores as well as online. I leave a link in the description. Thank you. 39. Danes definitely have a sense of humor and irony.

You can even detect this in the names of some of their towns like my favorite Middelfart which literally translates to middle fart. Forgive me I just didn’t hold back. Others translate as dandruff, sperm, or frog team. Well, have a look at them all next to me.

    40. On April 9, 1940, the Germans attacked Denmark and took it in two hours. Can you imagine an entire country in two hours? They met no resistance because a year earlier the Danes signed a peace treaty which the Germans broke, however. 41. We come to a paradox.

The Danes are super polite and kind and words like thank you, excuse me, and please, which are even absent, are super rare. I confirm because I have Danish friends and they at the bar are literally “hey, give me a beer”. No can you or if you like…

The inspiration behind the name Bluetooth, the data transfer technology comes from the Danish Viking king Harald Blatand, or translated Harald the Bluetooth. 42. He in the past united all the tribes and introduced Christianity. 43. We come to my rubric of famous Danes.

We start with Mads Mikkelsen and Viggo Mortensen you just can’t not know them. Scarlett Johansson and Niels Bohr also have Danish roots. The general rule is surnames ending in “son” and “sen” are Scandinavian. 44. In Denmark they have a New Year’s tradition of jumping out of a chair

As soon as the clock strikes 12. Seriously, they get on the chairs and instead of kissing and congratulating each other the first thing they do is jump and kick into the new year. 45. Danes like other Scandinavians have a peculiarity called huga which is not found anywhere else in the world.

Imagine it something like the Plovdiv “ailjak”. Except for that “Huga” there is to light some candles, wear some soft clothes to go somewhere warm with friends to watch a movie and drink some expensive red wine. 46. Combined with something called Janteloven which is a unwritten law of equality and anti-individualism.

Danes like to get together a lot and live their lives. 47. The cooler and windier climate actually has its advantages and Denmark is known as the capital of windmills. They are literally everywhere there. About 50% of the country’s energy needs are met by wind

And a large part of the turbines are even in the sea 48. Denmark has been in the European Union since 1973. That is, they joined in its first expansion. They were also one of the founding members of nato back in 1949.

    49. In the last decade the Danes have been competing with the Finns in the category of the happiest nation in the world. In 2023, Finland again took the top spot with Denmark remaining second. At the bottom of this ranking, by the way, are Afghanistan and Lebanon.

    50. In Denmark 10% of kindergartens are in forest areas or in large parks. This allows for outdoor lessons and connecting with nature from a young age. Really quite an interesting approach. Thumbs up if you liked the video. Subscribe to the channel from the circle with my picture here

JahIstBer – Enigma 😀 😀

    6. А каква в икономиката на Дания? И изобщо,скандинавците не ги харесвам.Славяните сме си славяни плюс румънците които не знаят ,че и те са славяни и германците.Другите не ги харесвам.
