Hello and welcome back to biker stuff today is just a talk from me no stripping rebuilding modifying or explaining I have just returned from a two week visit to one of the Channel Islands which is a group of British islands off the coast of France I drove over in my car as Bert

Isn’t keen on going on the back of my bikee and Gary went over for a few days to visit us on his zero so this will be a talk about his trip on his electric motorbike to compare the trip to a petrol bike biker staffs motorcycle Channel

Gary went over on the ferry from Portmouth and we thought we would share his journey with you he rode his electric Zero srf from faremouth in Cornwall to Portsmouth in Hampshire which is about 250 miles he has given me the notes he made of the trip including the miles and time

Between stops and the cost of each recharge he has also taken some pictures at the stops which I will put up on the screen for you starting with the bike at home loaded and ready to go let me tell you a little information about his bike it is capable of doing a

Trip of about 100 to 120 mil the batteries on most electric vehicles would rather they were drained to 20% and recharge to 80% this 60% top up on his bike only takes about 20 to 30 minutes which makes a nice break after an hour or two of

Riding for this reason this 250 mile trip needs to be split into 60 mile segments meaning he would need four stops to recharge let me show you a comparison between petrol and electric on this trip using the notes he made if you don’t know the costs of charging depends on the company

Supplying the power and the speed of the charge provided some 7 kilowatt charges are free or up to 40p a kilowatt but they are slow whereas the 22 KW and 43 kwatt charges are more like 75 to 90p but up to four times faster Gary’s trip from home to

Portsmouth on either bike petrol or electric takes 4 and a half to 5 hours depending on traffic and stops to refuel food and having a Wei Etc on a petrol bike he would have needed one stop halfway and a second one to use on the island petrol prices there are much more

Than here in England whereas the EV charges are much cheaper stopping twice to refill after let’s say 140 mil for the first and then one on arrival in Portsmouth would have added 20 to 30 minutes to the trip the cost assuming 10 m per liter at £135 a liter is

£190 for the first stop and a further 11 lers in Portsmouth would be £14 85 totaling £33.75 this is his little book of notes he made from his ride he noted his stops how much electric he bought for how much and for how long he was stopped for but I

Know he gets people chatting to him when he is charging so sometimes he is there a little longer than he needs to be first stop was at the jamaer in where he added 4.86 kilow at 79p a kilowatt next was the blue ball pub near exitor where he took

5.15 Kow at 77p a kilowatt then in Dorchester at the butter Market he added 4.41 KW at 79p a kilowatt and finally in Chandler’s Ford he put in 5.75 KW at 55 p a kilowatt he said the stop at ch board was because the M27 Services weren’t working when he was

There so that totals an extra 2 hours to the journey which he was expecting and a total of just over 20 kilow totaling £445 as you can see that is almost two and a half times the price for petrol compared to electric and yes the journey did take

Longer but if you think riding a motorbike is about the destination and not about the journey you have been driving a car for too long thank you for watching I know you liked it so tell your friends and I’ll see you here here and next time on biker Stuff I hope you like that I have selected another video for you here or you can look at an entire playlist if you want to subscribe click here

    1. Sod that i ride from the midlands to Plymouth regularly…..having to stop every 60 miles would make that a nightmare, also id miss the sound my gsxr makes lol….then i bet a replacement battery is more than the bike is worth

    2. I test rode an electric Energica Eva Ribelle. It looks great and is superbike quick. However, it cost £28000. Had a realistic range of 80-120 miles. The batteries cost £8000 to replace and obviously there's the charging issues, we all hear about. I'll stick with my 1200GS 👍🏼

    3. I ride bikes to get places not to hang around waiting to charge up, also I can fix and maintain most petrol bikes (ex trade) I don't know anything about ev bikes and I would not trust second hand ev bike as how long is the battery going to last ? Not for me ta

    4. I would tend to fill it up further and discharge it further for a longer journey like that – I tend to charge to 95% on these sorts of journeys, and then look to recharge at somewhere between 10-20%. And in fact if I'm still eating chips or drinking coffee or my arse is still too numb I'll charge it past 95% too. My charge times are usually about 45-50 minutes or so which is just enough to get some feeling back in the poor thing 😛 (My favourite long distance trip is from Somerset to Snowdonia, about 250 miles or so). The cost of public chargers is beyond a joke really but as really I'm only using public chargers for about 10% of my annual mileage I don't mind so much, as the rest of the time it's costing me about £1 for a full charge at home with Octopus…

    5. Our petro is $1.57 / liter equals about .92£. I do like the thought of electric vehicle and not paying the tax. The need more range for rural Canada. Thanks for video.

    6. "If you think riding a motorbike is about the destination and not about the journey, you have been driving a car for too long." That's the quote right there.

    7. I could never have an electric bike! It's just not right!!! A bike is not just a means of transport it's so much more. It's the vibes, the mechanical sympathy and being as one with your bike, a group of like minded friends.

As for EV's don't get me started. I fell for all the hype and bought an EV and now realise what a huge con it is. Public charging is far more expensive than petrol. The supposed green approach that would result in lower priced electricity, is just a lie. The price will stay the same or go higher, while the electricity companies make huge profits. It's time to end this Net Zero as it's just an excuse to control the people and raise taxes.

    8. Nothing beats the sweet sounds of the engine or the exhaust notes. or the opening of the garage door and walking inside to the sweet smell of the bikes. i’ll stick to the petrol thanks.

    9. can't say what I would say but you are on other platforms that allow me to. Channel Islands are lovely – lived "darn sarf " for a few years and went there a few times ( and the IoW) felt curiously but satisfyingly retro. So laid back. You meet locals who don't lock their cars when you ask why the say where would a thief go? Fair point. Anyway nipples – opps – sorry thumbs up the cost comparisons are always interesting. I am still unconvinced by EV's in the UK though – my issues are with the infrastructure not the cost
