Rich hates gravel bikes Can Conor change his mind? We heard that @gmbn’s Rich Payne hates gravel bikes and would much rather shred the gnar aboard one of his full suspension mountain bikes. Can we convert him to the joys of under-biking? Or will gravel cycling be a step too far for this flat bar fanatic?

I would buy a gravel bike instead of a road bike to cross train on. I am a MTB rider and wouldn't want to be limited by a road bike plus there are loads of bridal ways, lanes and rough roads near me.
Gravel Bike = 1980s MTB π
completely put me off buying gavel bike . they are definitely pointless
as an mtb rider i dont see the point replacing my HT. back to 2x for speed and wide gravel tyres. mtb does it for me
Spending that much cash on a bike that you have to find specific trails to ride on is just pants
Variety in cycling is the spice of life. Ride to the level of your smile. π΄ββοΈπ
Rich nailed it. FFS how many bikes can a man need. There's no need for gateway bikes. If you want to go off road get an MTB.
Does anyone know what specific Orbea Terra model Rich is using here?
Love my gravel bike! I do occasionally take it on some pretty serious single track (I started cycling with a mountain bike and switched to road – now road and gravel). The thing I like about gravel is the freedom and ability to mix trails and tarmac for stops. To each their own, nice video showing the adaptability of Graveling!
A light hardtail would have done much better in these conditions BUT the gravel bike is faster
Only reason I would have to buy a gravel bike would be to do bikepacking. Otherwise I'll just run 32 mm tires on my road bike and if it needs anything more than that I'll grab my mountain bike
Perfect ride for a xc hardtail πβΊοΈ
My favourite riding is on mixed terrain using inexpensive bikes, NOT gravel riding, just general exploration. Gravel riding still has this lingering racing and athleticism associated with it, which it shouldn't have, but that's capitalism for you I guess.
As someone who used to mountainbike, I quite enjoy the gravel bike when getting older and not feeling the crazy mtb trails anymore. Still gives you the feeling of being more in nature than with a road bike, but not having to do crazy sections of trail anymore.
Click bait
That proper bumpy bit is a regular part of my gravel riding π. That's gravel riding
More than anything this just showed what a great rider Rich is. Skinny tyres & no suspension down that track & he almost made it look easy. Of course it wasn't easy because he was on a road bike. π
Because XC exist
a gravel bike is nice for beginners who can't dice which bike to buy you can easily cruise on the road but you have the option to go offroad my first bike was gravel the second one will be the proper road bike but I will still keep gravel you can't have too many bikes
Gravel bikes are for people who want to ride road, but don't feel safe on main tarmac (I don't blame them…there just isn't much gravel in my area).
Gravel bikes make good indoor trainers.π Road bikes built for cobblestones are faster than gravel bikes for the vast majority of non off road races. XC bikes are faster on single-track and can easily be setup for bike packing and/or commuting. The people I talk to about gravel bikes only defend ownership if they own one themselves!
For me, Gravel riding was a gateway to Mountain Biking!
