    The Yorkshire Gateway feature
This landmark feature commemorates Great Yorkshire Way. It was installed in time for stage one of the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire cycle race used phase two of the link road and passed by the feature en route to the finish in Doncaster town centre.
The imposing artwork reflects this being the gateway to the great county of Yorkshire and one of the first sights visitors to our county will see when they arrive at Doncaster Sheffield Airport and venture on to their destination along Great Yorkshire Way.

It is also close to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and in the popular market town Bawtry – just a stone’s throw away – is “No 1 Yorkshire” – this Grade II, listed town house is the southernmost house on the Great North Road and the first property in Yorkshire.

The artwork was commissioned by Doncaster Council as part of the Great Yorkshire Way scheme.

It was designed by the artist Chris Brammall.

It will be used as an iconic start and finish point for new cycling routes.

    Key facts:

Height: 8.6m (height of two double decker buses)
Width: 8.5m (the centre is 1.5m – wide enough to cycle through)
    Weight: 13 ton
    Volume: 13.7 Cubic Metres.
    380 metres of weld
How was it made (the technical bit)

The 15mm mild steel was profile cut before being mig-welded from both the outside and inside into three sections. Each leg section weighs 3.2ton and the top middle section 6.6tons. The blasting process gave a uniform finish ready for the paint to be applied by a specialist finishing technician.

    1. Hi 👋. I didn’t know the Tour de Yorkshire was a thing! I like how you edited in how they put the Y up. I’m sure I remember Yorkshire television logo years ago had a giant yellow Y?? 👍🏻😘

    2. Well I enjoyed going through the Y with you! It's something interesting to look at isn't it, we don't really have anything like that down here…although we do have a roundabout with a rugby post in the middle, that has 2 saucepans on the top of it 🙈 I quite like the Y though.
