May 1945 All of Germany is in ruins Six years of war have changed the country and its people Zero hour is a deep turning point Beneath the rubble lies not only the remnants of an inhumane dictatorship Beneath them lies irretrievably the time in
Which the people in Peace lived in their towns and villages years before the war, landscapes and gnarled types, living and working environments that are forever a thing of the past [music] but not everything has been lost in the darkness of history when, in the course of technical
Progress, filming with small narrow films was possible Cameras have become a popular hobby not a cheap pleasure the films were short and expensive color film material a distinct rarity this compilation is a real treasure trove if the privately shot films not only take you to a wide variety of regions and
Cities in Germany they provide an insight into the living situations and working conditions such as they no longer exist today the recordings are as different as the people who made them back then each film is just a small piece of the mosaic but when put together they create an informative
And entertaining overall picture of Germany in the 30s [music] [applause] [music] 1936 the sailing competitions The Olympic Games that took place in Berlin this year were held in Kiel and numerous visitors from near and far are looking for Schilksee on the Kiel Fjord. Numerous sailors took the opportunity to
Experience the celebrations from their sailing boats in large numbers in the wonderful summer weather on the Kiel Fjord [music] the flag of the Swedish Olympic team was ceremoniously hoisted [music] the sailing competitions were also a welcome occasion for the meeting a naval comradeship laughingly presented the company to the photographer while the women
Showed off the latest fashion, the men showed themselves the elegant suits and neat uniforms, the specially appointed photographer has a great need to capture the whole group in the picture, but he skillfully disciplines the group. This gentleman with his handy 8 mm camera has it
Much easier, apparently only for the pretty feet of the ladies who have arrived The photographer has also completed his work, the souvenir photo is ready. From the terrace of the excursion restaurant in Schilksee, the view is of the opposite bank and further over the Kiel Fjord towards the Baltic Sea. In the
Background you can just see the silhouette of the naval memorial of Laboe, which was already there back then The trip to Laboe is a must for every visitor to Kiel. In the wonderful sunshine, the day trippers gather in the morning at the Seegartenbrücke.
The departure stage of the excursion steamers is a nice place to study. These pictures show the current women’s fashion at the time and the beard costume of the more sedate [Music] the first part of the tour group is already setting off, the rest are waiting for the
Next steamer and, waving cheerfully, say goodbye to their friends traveling in front [music] what experience might the trip with her grandparents have been for this little girl? the visitors are based in Mölten Ort with its submarine memorial like it back then another lighthouse provides a safe path for ships arriving and departing [music]
Out here at the entrance to the Baltic Sea it shows the power of nature – the wind blows so strongly that some ladies have to fear for their fashionable hat, even in such a lively company hearty beer the journey time on the 17 km long fjord
[music] the excursion destination is almost reached the marine memorial of Laboe [music] [music] after the captain has docked at the bridge of the new steamship company the excursions leave the shaky ground [music] New political power penetrated society into the private sphere. Children in sailor suits with a
Swastika armband walk along the fine sandy beach of the Baltic Sea resort to the recently completed memorial. The work took ten years. The 85 meter high tower rises cutely above the entire complex [Music ] its shape is reproduced in the stem of a ship [music] [applause] [music]
From the top viewing platform you have a fascinating view of the beach of Laboe and the shipping traffic on the fjord. The day has passed far too quickly and the return journey has to be started. The always hungry seagulls circle the steamer in the hope of getting a breadcrumb from the passengers [Music]
The lighthouse shows that you are approaching the harbor of Kiel, the evening sun is reflected silver on the waves and this excursion comes to an end with a last look at the picturesque sailing boats. The next film also takes us to the island in the north of Germany Sylt
, the wide sandy beach of Kampen, was already a popular travel destination for sun-seekers and an ideal playground for children [music] building sand castles has a long tradition while the father sweats, the children enjoy the sun and the sea but the water temperature is so shining don’t agree yet
A film camera is a rarity at this time and just makes you want to nap [music] for the older children, the soft North Sea sand is an ideal place to have fun and play, the closed beach clothes of the adults reveal a lot about the moral views of the
Time This is another way to enjoy beach life [music] with a wonderful panning shot over the steep cliffs and the wide sandy beach of Kampen, we say goodbye to Sylt. The East Frisian island of Borkum was just as popular as Sylt. Over 38,000 bathers visited
The island year after year Life on this westernmost and largest East Frisian island took place on the modern spa promenade [Music] Due to a storm surge in the Middle Ages, Borkum was torn into two parts: West and Eastland, which
Were reconnected by a dike in 1863. The Westland and the town had to be protected by powerful protective structures the constant beach and dune demolition are secured by the air flow of the Westerems while eastward beach shifts enlarge the Ostland [Music] [Applause] Like Wangerooge, Borkum also affects all landscape elements of the dune island, dunes up to 19 meters high in all stages of development, beach waves and old beach areas as well as march formation to the diked pasture land [music] [music] smiling faces Germany before the war [music] while the visitors enjoy their vacation
Continues the working life for the local fishermen [music] the pulling of a boat is for the vacationers from the city exciting spectacle and an adventure for the children [music] we stay on the waterfront our next excursion begins in Hamburg for the numerous
Visitors the unique atmosphere of the world harbor was an attraction – these images bring back memories of how they brought life to life around 70 years ago on the Elbe, many vacationers took the opportunity to take a ship from Hamburg to Helgoland, a look back at the Landungsbrücken and St Pauli, which
Was already a well-known entertainment district back then [music] the trip first goes towards Cuxhaven [music] the seaside resort bridge from Cuxhaven with the old love lighthouse behind it on the left bank of the mouth of the Elbe which holidaymakers watch the incoming ship [music]
A stopover is made here and some passengers disembark [music] break to the destination and here too the seagulls are city companions [music] The unmistakable silhouette of Helgoland can already be seen on the horizon. Then as now, ships with deeper seas have
To arrive in the open sea in front of the island. The passengers are brought ashore from here with small red rocks. The famous red rock of Heligoland. The emblem of the island is red: the Kant The beach is white, the country is green, these are the colors of Heligoland.
At the time these photos were taken, Helgoland had still retained its original charm. Many of the island’s residents still made a living from fishing. Their fishing boats lying on the beach were a popular subject for photographers and films, the Heligolanders were already prepared for tourists back then, but they still dominated
Narrow winding streets and the small printed fishermen’s houses the image of the island [music] the healthy North Sea air was already used back then to cure respiratory diseases, especially children spent a convalescent holiday here, we accompany the cameraman for a while on his walk through the picturesque streets
Of the Today, little of this idyll has been preserved from the old town [music] Heligoland has experienced an eventful history as a result of its excellent location dominating the entire German bay. Settled by Frisians, it initially belonged to the
Duchy of Schleswig until 1714, then came to Denmark and belonged to it from 1807 Until 1890, it became part of Great Britain. In 1890, Heligoland came to Germany in exchange for Zanzibar.
Holidaymakers are taken daily on small boats to the dune, which is just under one and a half kilometers from the main island. The most beautiful bathing spot on the North Sea island is located here. The
Characteristic shape of Helgoland is particularly good on this crossing You can see that there is a lot of bathing activity on the dune. Even back then, they tried to offer holidaymakers something special. Gymnastics and sports on the beach were a welcome change for the sun-hungry tourists. As you can see , the
Entertainers back then came up with a lot of ideas to keep people entertained and the flat sand on the dune was particularly popular because even non-swimmers could safely enjoy a wonderful beach holiday when a storm came and the waves whipped against the beach, caution was advised [music] [applause]
Even water skiing is not a modern invention [music] The trip in a small fishing boat and around the imposing rocks of the island was a special adventure for the visitors from the mainland, so Helgoland was once again shown in all its beauty. A holiday can’t end in a more atmospheric way [music]
The next film takes us to Bremen This photo, taken long before the war, is little more than a camera panning over the center of the old Hanseatic city in view of the severe destruction in the air war. However, these images are particularly
Valuable embedded in everyday life around the market square, they show the town hall, the old Patricia houses and the city’s landmark, the Roland [music] Anyone who believes that things were still calm and relaxed in Bremen around 70 years ago will be disappointed. People are hurrying along the wide streets on business
And, in addition to the tram, more and more automobiles are dominating the cityscape only on the market With its numerous stalls, the good old days seem to have persisted [Music] Almost 100 km south of Bremen, our next destination is the monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I at the Porta Westfalica near Minden
From the 277 meter high Wittekindsberg on which the impressive monument was built You have an unobstructed view of the Weserbergland and the Weser. The monument, erected between 1892 and 1896, is one of the most famous among the
Almost 400 that were erected in the then German Empire after the death of William the First [music] the film is professionally made which now takes us to a typical East Westphalian village in Wadersloh, it provides a lot of information about life in a small community at the beginning of the 1930s [music]
Lou was first mentioned in a document in 1187, the place was a so-called church village from the start, a settlement center around The most important building around the church is the Margaret Church, which was built between 1890 and 1894 by the master builder
Rinklage. From its 84 meter high tower you have a wide view over the entire community. Time really seems to have stood still here, with hectic traffic on the cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carts dominate the streetscape, even the children could play on the streets without danger. The postman was still
An institution back then; he not only brought the mail. There was always time for conversations on the sidelines and news was spread quickly in the village in this way even the wood carver’s new lumps had to be examined by him The children were looked after in an exemplary manner at the local kindergarten,
Old farms with traditional half-timbered buildings dominated the village image. However, the cameraman seems to have had a special fondness for the gnarled Westphalian types because he repeatedly pointed his camera at the striking faces, each of which is impressive in its own way
At that time, a village like this was a world in itself. Young and old lived together under one roof and while parents went about their daily work, grandparents and grandchildren spent the day together, often doing hard physical work on the farms and fields, which determined the rhythm of modern life
Machines were largely unknown, the horse was man’s most important helper, without horses the daily work would hardly have been possible, especially in the harvest season, every Hans was needed whoever could perform one, spent the days in the fields piling up the dry straw, which required strength and energy As long as
The weather was good, it was important to bring the harvests into the barns, regardless of time pressure, the proverbial Westphalian spirit remained for a pipe with good tobacco, there was always time, the pride of every Westphalian farmer was his horses, a lot of time was spent on their care and breeding [ Music]
Whoever works well must also eat well Westphalian black bread was a specialty and was made according to old, traditional recipes, the same applied to the grain that was often drunk in sociable dogs. The film is of particular importance in a second respect because it describes
It very clearly political development in the 1930s propaganda was more than just a slogan because at every opportunity the local representatives of the NSDAP presented the picture of the new leader of Germany to their fellow citizens with the takeover of power by the National Socialists in
1933. The lot was finally over the swastika flag, the new rulers increasingly determined people’s lives, even in the smallest communities. Despite everything, people didn’t want to miss out on entertainment. Every now and then, the local Reich Labor Service organized a square concert [music] during the parade as part
Of the city’s founding celebration, which is political Element unmistakable Reich labor service warrior associations Hitler Youth and the local party representatives lead the procession [music] even the traditionally dressed Westphalian riders greet with their right arm raised, but that doesn’t prevent them
From decorating their typical Westphalian tobacco pipe. Let’s now leave Westphalia and follow another film amateur Rhine our first destination is Bonn, the Electoral Palace is where the university was founded in 1818. The first history professor at the newly
Founded university was Ernst Moritz Arndt, who lived in this house. The city’s most famous son, however, was Ludwig van Beethoven, whose birthplace can be seen here [Music ] the late Romanesque architectural style of the basilica shows that the city on the left bank of the Rhine
Was already an important place in the eleventh century [Music] Bathing fun in an outdoor pool in Bad Honnef is amazing how well these old color photos are still preserved in the background the Drachenfels was just as much a leisure activity as a Visiting the over 300 meter high
Dragon rock with the dragon castle, which you reached either on the back of a donkey or with the dragon rock railway [music] [applause] [music] from the summit where there was a restaurant inviting you to linger, you had
One of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Rhine valley [Music] The Rhine has always been an important waterway. Anyone who went on holiday in this region or took a trip naturally also visited Koblenz, which was then the capital of the Rhine Province Koblenz
From the mighty Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, 118 meters above the Rhine, a stroke of luck that exactly matches the previous color film from another company His film was shot at exactly this point. His film first shows the mighty fortress again and then captures an interesting historical detail: the
Counterpart bridge near Koblenz, which still existed at the time, closed this bridge that served as a connection between Koblenz on the left bank of the Rhine and the Orders of Pfaffendorf and Ehrenbreitstein on the right bank of the Rhine the river for shipping and had to be opened regularly [music]
Only when the ships had passed this obstacle could the missing bridge pieces be reinserted and the crossing opened to pedestrians [music] Koblenz, with its 92,000 inhabitants at the time, had a lot to offer its visitors offer the most beautiful view from the fortress, its wide stone [music]
From here the view goes over the city to the Deutsches Eck with the famous equestrian statue of Emperor Wilhelm I, to the mouth of the Moselle into the Rhine and to the
Town of Lützel [music ] A well-preserved color film from the early summer of 1939 proves that the Moselle also had its charms. At that time it formed the 34 km long border between Luxembourg and the German Reich. As a waterway it was just as important as it was popular as an excursion destination.
There were dreamy little ones on its banks Villages whose full beauty only becomes apparent when you take a walk, lovingly designed half-timbered houses down to the last detail determined the image of the Museldorf and everywhere there are small restaurants where visitors come for coffee and cake
When gautag was celebrated in Trier, as is currently the case. These photos went down to the smallest towns Swastika flags from the windows [Music] Cochem Castle high above the narrow Moselle valley is still one of the most beautiful fortresses today.
Destroyed by the French in 1689, the castle was rebuilt between 1868 and 1877. Surrounded by high vineyards, the Moselle meanders through the Rhenish Slate Mountains [Music] from here it was just a stone’s throw into the Eifel, a rough, unfertile highland that
Gradually merges into the arenas in the west. According to its origins, the Eifel is an old rump mountain range rich in extinct volcanoes and cats see the so-called Maren then as now a popular excursion destination for the industrial centers on the Lower Rhine, especially Lake Laach with the
Benedictine Abbey of Maria Laach, founded in 1,093 by Count Palatine Henry II. The Nürburgring was already the mecca of motorsport back then. The races attracted numerous visitors from near and far to the fascination here of motorsports up close Anyone who already owned a car back then and perhaps dreamed of a career as a racing driver after a visit to the Nürburgring was quickly caught up in reality. Washing and repair work were already the lot of the car around 60 years ago Motorists
Back in line, another film takes us back to the rows. Numerous ferries ran between the small towns on the banks because the already few bridges only existed in the area around the larger cities. Ferries formed indispensable connections between the villages [music]
The ferryman still had to have the appropriate physical strength back then Even around 60 years ago, steamboat trips on the Rhine were already extremely popular, especially those interested in history enjoyed this type of travel. Nowhere in Germany were
There as many castles and palaces as on the banks of the Rhine in the times when the old soil were built, the Rhine was of great importance as a waterway due to increased mobility and increasing trade connections, but it gained the highest
Priority. Even the rapid expansion of rail connections could not change this [music] The Palatinate is hardly one of the most beautiful arches, it dates back to the 14th century and is Completely surrounded by water, the Marksburg is one of the proudest castle complexes on the Rhine.
It was never destroyed and preserves many historically important sights inside and out. In the shadow of this fortified fortress we end our Rhine journey from the Rhine, it is not far to the Taunus. Here lies the small town of Kronberg The starting point of the settlement was the castle, which
Was already mentioned in documents around 1200. The place itself received city rights in 1330 and became the preferred location in Frankfurt [music] around the middle of the 19th century and that is Frankfurt undestroyed before the war [music] one One of the few buildings that can still be recognized today is the
Goethe House in which the poet was born in 1749 [music] the next film takes us to Bad Rippoldsau in the Black Forest it was shot with a 16 mm camera only rarely did an amateur own such an expensive camera The quality of the recordings
Is of course far better than that of an 8 mm narrow film [music] the bath was known for the fun-loving patient. In any case, the patient seems to enjoy the treatment with all his heart. In addition to the mud bath, the drinking water in the bath was an important cure.
We follow the cameraman his cinematic walk through the spa town and the adjacent Black Forest region and we enjoy their beauties [Music] The Rosengarten guesthouse not only attracted visitors with Black Forest specialties, the fresh brown trout were obviously particularly popular, while busy hands in the background ensured the well-being of the guests in the afternoon Coffee and a little chat in the wonderful sunshine are part of every treatment.
An excursion is planned while the ladies are still inspecting the car, one of the gentlemen ensures an atmospheric state [music] the fog is still rising from the valleys of the Black Forest and while some are working hard the others have to enjoy the well-deserved lunch break
The goal seems to have been reached a rustic inn here the company descends at least the gentlemen seem to have found a cozy place [music] Images that seem doubly idyllic in our hectic times are preserved by another film strip that takes us into one other region of the Black Forest
To Heitersheim, the small town is located near the French border, although there are only around 60 years between these pictures and our high-tech present, we look into another world, the peace and serenity of a rural life in harmony with nature The threshold of the new millennium is a
Quiet dream for many people, an attempt to evade the ever-faster pace of events and to be able to focus on the essential questions again. The film will be for itself, let us take the time and follow the images into an irretrievable past [music] [Applause] [Music]
The leisurely rhythm of life of bygone times still extends far into our century. The century of technical progress is becoming just too tangible. The development on Lake Constance, to which the next film strip takes us, Friedrichshafen was the location of the Zeppelin
Shipyard and a Zeppelin airfield rose from here in 1900 the first airship lz1 into the sky [music] the imposing airship glides majestically in the sky then as now the silently floating giants fascinated people for a film such a sight is of course a special event that absolutely had to be recorded
Geographically next film a further leap it was shot by a member of the German Air Force who was stationed in Munich and stopped at a few sights of the city festival at an exit. Unfortunately, these recordings have lost some of their quality, but they are of historical interest. We follow
The unknown soldier on his short walk through The city took the tram to the center [music] the Feldherrenhalle, at that time major National Socialist events took place here , the House of German Art, built in 1931 in the classicist style.
The Glass Palace, which was destroyed by fire, stood on this site until 1931 The victim was [music] good in summer and winter numerous leisure activities a seal game on one of the Bavarian lakes was one of the most beautiful summer joys and was especially popular with the students [music]
The panorama of the mountains was also for the small group of film- amateurs a welcome subject However, you had to dig deep into your pockets to be able to afford your own car back then. However, such a classic car would
Also be an expensive pleasure today. A drive along one of the well-developed pass roads always offered breathtaking views of the mountains [Music] [ Applause] who explored one of the numerous clear mountain lakes on a rowing trip. The trip on the Königssee near Berchtesgaden was already
A must for tourists back then. One of the excursion boats takes you across the clear 5 m² lake, which measures 188 meters at its deepest point Enclosed by gray-white rock walls that rise up to 2000 meters like a wall [Music] [Applause] [Music] on the west bank on the leafy talus cone of the Eisbach, the destination is the pilgrimage church of St Bartholomew from 1711 in the neighboring inn Bavarian specialties the wonderful view of the lake after a few hours stay we took the boat back towards Schönau [music]
Also popular were from nearby Innsbruck the capital of Tyrol we would easily recognize this characteristic view if we were strolling through the city today because there are not many here Bombs [music] Of course, the activities in the winter months were even more diverse. Skiers in particular got their money’s worth.
Those who were lucky enough to be taken to a summit in a car that was safe on the slopes could enjoy the descent and the panorama of the snow-covered mountains twice as much enjoy [applause] back then, passionate skiers were already skiing in any weather, the
Blowing snow certainly didn’t seem to detract from the descent in this case [music] most holiday resorts also offered ice skaters the opportunity to practice their sport, a nice old strip is dedicated to figure skating The beginners look enviously at the skilfully executed pirouettes of the runner [music] [laughter] [music] the
Men’s sporty knee breeches, which were ultra-modern at the time, were popularly called raid trousers or knickerbockers [music] our path now leads us north again the Bayreuth Festival was not only a highlight in the music world but also a social event, even back then it was a feat to get tickets for the festival.
The visitors drove up in elegant black limousines. The police had their hands full regulating the traffic. People strolled in during the breaks See and be seen in festive clothing in front of the theater was the motto [laughter] [music] Burg ob der Tauber Rotenburg is one of the best preserved medieval
Cities, numerous gates and towers adorn the city wall from the 14th century [laughter] while in the older city center With its numerous town houses in the Gothic or Renaissance style, especially the patrician class, where craftsmen and tradesmen settled, agricultural businesses remained in the side streets until the 20th century, some of which
Were only settled in model farms in front of the city after the Second World War [Music] Not far away From Rotenburg lies the episcopal and university town of Würzburg, famous for its residence, the main work of German baroque castle architecture, it was built between 1719 and 1744 by the brilliant master builder Balthasar Neumann [music]. Here in Würzburg we say goodbye to the so characteristic
Southern German cultural landscape and On our way to the northeast we set off on a journey through the Harz Mountains. The heart was still largely untouched at the time, with a length of around 100 km, its lakes and dense forests invited us to take long-used hikes [music]
In the winter when the small villages were hidden under a thick blanket of snow, there was mass tourism still no trace the numerous slopes offered winter sports enthusiasts plenty of opportunity for activity [music] here it is not far to Braunschweig a city with an eventful history as Braunschweig
Was badly destroyed in the war, these never-seen recordings are of great historical value Born out of several settlements around Dankwarderode Castle, Braunschweig received its city rights from Henry the Lion, who died here in 1195. The cathedral, which
Was built between 1173 and 1195, also goes back to him. Numerous half-timbered Gothic and Renaissance half-timbered buildings gave the city its distinctive character Character among the special features is the bronze lion on the Burgplatz. Built in 1166 by Henry the Lion, the Gothic old town
Town hall, the guild hall and the Gewandhaus with its Renaissance gable from 1592. On the way to Berlin we cross the Elbe near Magdeburg [music] in the same place in winter the ice floes made the fairway impassable. The center of Germany was undisputedly the then imperial capital of Berlin. The
International airport Tempelhof was the gateway to the world. Berlin was also the headquarters of Deutsche Lufthansa, which was formed in 1926 through the merger of several airlines. Numerous national and international flights flew from here every day Flying into airports a color film from the mid-1930s captures scenes on the tarmac [music] [music]
The number of passengers was still small, but service was very important. In addition to luggage, the planes also carried some airmail shipments, which added to the anonymous atmosphere of ours Today’s major airfields are a bit wistful in the face of such images [Music]
The 1936 Olympic Games were among the outstanding events in pre-war Berlin. Private photographs, which have only now been discovered, visualize the special atmosphere of those days and weeks for the Berliners and opened up the encounters with the numerous visitors and
Athletes from other countries and continents were once again the gateway to the world for the regime, the games were a good opportunity to give itself the appearance of cosmopolitanism [music] even before the National Socialist regime came to power, Berlin was the imperial capital of
The center of political disputes [music ] a rare document that also allows insights into Berlin in the early 1930s, this private recording of the federal meeting of the Steel Helmet. The Steel Helmet was originally an association of former frontline fighters from the
First World War, but developed into a leading force in the fight in the 1920s and early 1930s against the Weimar Republic, especially the SA, recruited many of its members from the ranks of this group. The Stahlhelm consciously appeared in a military manner,
The uniformed members marched in long columns through the streets of Berlin and then gathered for a public rally in the Lustgarten and also in other places in the Major events took place in the open air in the city center. The exercise was the
Public meeting in the Poststadion, to which numerous Berlin citizens flocked [music] in the stands of the stadium. Military ceremonies and pithy speeches by the chairmen were the highlights. The major rally ended with the traditional fireworks display, although the Stahlhelm ingratiated itself with the National Socialists It was
Dissolved in the course of the complete synchronization on November 7, 1935 by a decision of Adolf Hitler. Another film shows a meeting of the naval comrades on the AVUS of the automobile traffic and training road between Grunewald and Nikolausseefest
On marches like these witnesses of the spirit of the pre-war period in Germany uniform medals and military drill only dominated the image of men’s societies for a few more years and the war would devour an entire continent. Differently from Frederick’s Berlin, in which everyone
Was allowed to be happy according to his or her ability, the Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, on the other hand, presented itself completely differently in these years World’s Fair in 1937 Paris was fun and joy of life far away from the martial marches back home in Germany.
The city was festively decorated and welcomed its visitors with a real firework display of beauty. There was a lot of traffic on the streets and hundreds of thousands of people flocked to the event Exhibition area around the exhibits of the numerous foreign
Vendors to admire The world exhibition was one of the last major international trade fairs before the warrior, the economic interests of the individual countries were also in the foreground, so the entertainment and sometimes thrills for the visitors were not neglected. The National Socialist German Reich also took part in this exhibition
Although Hitler was initially scabbed against it, the German exhibition pavilion had been designed by Hitler’s favorite architect Albert Speer. In its cubic mass, crowned by an eagle holding the swastika in its claws, it corresponded entirely to the architectural ideas of the Third Reich. The Soviet ones were on the exhibition site
And the German pavilion opposite, the gigantic buildings of the two dictatorships would, in retrospect, be like the harbingers of the coming conflicts [Music] At that time, trips abroad were still possible and numerous Germans took the opportunity to visit Paris. A Berlin tourist has his impressions in this film Of course,
A trip to the viewing platform of the Eiffel Tower was already an attraction back then with a view over the exhibition grounds far beyond the houses Polish territory belongs to Upper Silesia a country doctor recorded the events of daily life with his small camera. In the summer months the events took place
Around the Stadtbad inn while the older citizens enjoyed the sunny day with coffee and cake in the open air and a clown entertained the children [Music] The village beauties presented themselves self-confidently on the diving tower, but apparently unimpressed by their beauty,
The young ones enjoyed the cool water of the beautifully located outdoor swimming pool [Music] in Catholic Upper Silesia, the church was the center of the town, even the swastika flag was planted on its tower Kind of a fair, the whole village gathers, numerous young men are already wearing the uniforms of National Socialist
Organizations around the fountain with its pretty figures, the festival is used [music] such a landscape is ideal for a bike ride [music] Annaberg in Upper Silesia southwest of Groß strehlitz here A 385 meter high basalt mountain rises on it. In 1938, at the same time as this film was made, a monument
To the fallen Freikor fighters was inaugurated. In the immediate vicinity of the Annaberg was the newly built youth hostel, which no longer exists due to the war. Two films guide us Now in an area that is closely linked to the prehistory of the Second World War in the Sudetenland,
We owe the older admission to a member of Schlaraffia, an association for the cultivation of humor and art while observing certain forms of chivalry. This men’s association was founded in Prague in 1859 At the beginning of the 1930s, an association of art lovers led
The federal meeting of Cockaigne to Karlsbad, the famous health resort in northwestern Bohemia. Karlsbad is located in the narrow valley of the title a little above its mouth into the Eger Once again the beauties of this stately spa town come to life. Among the architectural specialties of the city
Was the old Russian church with its elaborate artistic decorations. However, Karlovy Vary owes its world reputation to the 16 alkaline saline medicinal springs which were used by around 60,000 spa guests every year, especially the hot thermal springs were an attraction for visitors. The second film from the Sudetenland provides an
Authentic insight into the political events of the late autumn of 1938 with previously never-seen footage. In order to prevent an impending war, England and France had annexed the Sudetenland to the German Reich in the Munich Agreement agreed just a few days later the German army moved into the Sudetenland, these recordings,
Filmed by an officer in the front line, give an unvarnished impression of the events [music] the German minority received the invading troops with jubilation, unaware that Hitler had long since prepared more far-reaching plans to destroy the rest of the Czech Republic [music ]
On the church square of a small community, the German soldiers gathered, at first glance a peaceful scene, but only a few months later it would become bloody serious [music] mixed in with the welcome greetings were the first threats that would soon turn into bloody persecution
For around half of all living abroad in Germans lived in the Sudetenland at the time, the increasing conflicts with the Czech Republic and Slovaks led many Sudeten Germans to wish for an annexation to the German Reich. In many places the advancing German soldiers were therefore joyfully welcomed and celebrated as liberators
That Sudetenland was in the first place line an agricultural country the population farmed in the depressions and wide valleys there was also a textile glass and porcelain goods industry one of the rare color films from this time shows us once again the entire beauty of the
