The main E39 awaits and there are tunnels so long hitchhiking is your only option. But perhaps the hardest part is keeping your eyes on the road as you descend off a mountain pass with spectacular fjord views.

    On the surface everything looks calm but beneath the water those little feet are churning a mile a minute this my friends is one of the hardest journeys you can do in norway i’m having a right moan because i’m struggling i really am do you remember the mountains when it was pissing down

    The climbing is relentless and your road options are limited in places and at times improvisation is the only way constantly tired all the time and look may not be on your side but don’t despair mother nature she’ll be with you guiding you all the way we’re now entering the heart [Applause] good morning yeah ten percent gradient again much harder and toasty much harder Just swam read a book and relaxed but i have too much to do and the bad weather is approaching i must that was so cold [Applause] This area is quite simply incredible as you can see but you don’t get out of it without some big climbing and the first one over 10 gradient so first of the big climbs begins now 650 meters i say let’s go Well this gradient is steeper than total sticking [Applause] so we’re reaching a point in the journey now where there’s just one road through this mountainous train the e-39 which of course is a main road and all the traffic is diverted down this [Applause] Busy than i road i imagine there must be some cycling signs on this road warning traffic that cyclists could be here but as i went along it there was nothing until finally i saw the light flashing away ahead of me as i got closer oh it’s a

    Cyclist sign it has to be warning traffic about me telling them to keep their distance to slow down i’m saved i’m safe maybe not [Applause] by the way it’s uh it’s nice that the uh to have a warning sign about sheep but not about cyclists priorities priorities Meanwhile i’ve done about 70 k’s today and i’m just just so tired right now it’s the fifth day in a row of doing crazy amount of climbing it’s just one of them dilemmas because i can’t really appreciate this right now i’m not tired when you’re really tired

    Maybe a red bull might help oh yeah [Applause] [Applause] Okay this climb killed me my legs just were not working and i actually had to lie down for about 20 minutes halfway through this climb but every cloud as always no way treating me [Applause] gala is a protected river which basically means they cannot damage for hydro electricity and i hope it stays that way hey [Applause] hello magna i’m sorry it’s taking so long to make this video it was nice meeting you The final climb of the day was pretty easy around two to three percent gradient up to 800 meters above sea level and at the top you have this beautiful mountain lake with some old settlement areas i mean does it get any better [Applause] [Applause] One of norway’s most famous roads and i’m glad today that i’m going down it but as you can see it’s a pretty epic ride up [Applause] So it’s been a beautiful ride so far today a beautiful ride and it’s just flat road for the rest of the day which is just fantastic it’s a really nice feeling that there’s not been too many long stretches of flat road on this journey so gonna enjoy this now guys god it’s like

    So you can’t get any more perfect What do you think i’m guaranteed one without sugar but i really want one with sugar but i have a feeling this is a risky business A couple more kicks Some of the jordan now there is one fjord on this planet that’s longer but it’s in a remote area of greenland which is completely inaccessible so this is basically the longest fjord in the world at 205 kilometers in places it’s 1 300 meters deep and to cycle around it

    Guys you feel its power you feel its force and you feel the energy that it gives you So this is where it gets tricky we have three tunnels were impassable to cyclists one of them being the longest road tunnel in the world i’ve got to somehow get through that first tunnel crossover fjord get through the second tunnel and then do a massive climb over the mountains bypassing the last tunnel

    Not going to be easy well that’s the first tunnel it’s sunday it’s 10 o’clock in the morning the road is quiet now my lawyer helped me with the editing of this part now of course i’m not going to go through that tunnel because it’s illegal and i don’t do that sort of

    Thing so instead you’ve seen e.t and managed to fly over the mountain and then land safely on the other side it was incredible The next tunnel is about seven kilometers or something and uh i definitely cannot fly over this one i don’t know how i’m gonna get through it because uh there’s no vehicles that can carry my bike i need a camper van or a van of some sort right now it’s just cars

    It’s just cars come on like a big big huge campervan just come through this tunnel right now with a big sign saying matthew we’ll take you through the tunnel don’t worry we’re here to rescue you it’s sunday there is no one right now i’ve been stranded on the other side of this fjord

    Outside the tunnel for days days i’ve got about 12 energy bars to last me so i think i could probably i don’t know maybe three days and then i’m a goner so we’re gonna have to see won’t we but at least got some good views if

    You’re gonna die you might as well die here Yes So i’m in la dal if you uh if you look around me it’s just basically you’re just covered surrounded by mountains and um yeah it’s gonna be a tough climb so we better go on with it let’s go allen’s fella is a 47 kilometer route over high mountain pass the highest

    Point is 1 308 meters and it’s around 8 to 9 average gradient for the first 16 kilometers the actual climb itself is around 26 kilometers and you begin below sea level and of course the weather up there is highly unpredictable this is where it really starts smiley face uh

    I’m guessing there’s been a race here my look at where we’ve come from can you tell me the way to the summit please is it this way do you remember the last time we went over the mountains when it was pissing down rain freezing cold hard down we go So The hardest part about cycling this road is just keeping your eyes on it The only way out of flam is a thousand meter climb back up the mountains but i think it’s time we had a rest as always thanks for watching You

    7. when thinking about how desolate their roads are and how frozen it all is, their roads seems to be of amazing quality a few cracks here and there but i have seen much worse around europe, even some major danish roads seems to be in worse shape than these remote mountain roads.

    11. I climbed Stellvio by bike…it's almost 2000m elevation gain…but it's only one day. I did not continue on the bike … but I would rather not get much further.

    12. Just did a very similar trip to this. Bergen to Alesund via Hardangerfjord (Alvik, Granvin), Voss, Sognefjord (Vikoyri, Vangsnes), Vassenden, Skei, Innvikfjorden, Hjorundfjorden (Saebo) to Alesund. Lots of the same places and very similar area. So much climbing ~3000M elevation gain a day and so much scenery. I ended up riding the E39 section north of Skei and Byrkjelo at sunset around 11:00PM. After watching this, I got lucky since there was hardly any traffic around that time and the valley was crazy beautiful at sunset. And that Gaularfjellet climb was no joke! Amazing trip and amazing area. Thanks to Norway for having me!
