    See I am back in the African violet the lury University colors today’s goalkeeper master class is with Dave kums who is the goalkeeper coach here at Lu University and we are joining in with goalkeepers from the elite men’s program and the elite women’s program lra lightning now the men’s program here at

    Lufra includes non-league football FA Cup football University football and the women’s program ler lightning compete at step four of the National Football pyramid here in England so it’s going to be a top session with some top goalkeepers and a top goalkeeper coach so I’m looking forward to it let’s jump

    Straight in so I’m here with Dave kums who is head goalkeeper coach here at L University and also head of Academy goalkeeping at wal FC Dave thank you for having us thank you pleasure is all mine mate pleasure is all mine could you tell everyone at home just a little bit about

    Yourself how you got involved with lra where did the goalkeeper coaching come from yeah so much like yourself alumni lra so spent five years here at lra playing playing in the games yeah um and the the the superb sporting program they have here um always a little bit of

    Heart still left at L even when you leave so when the opportunity come to coach back here it was was a no-brainer um got back into coaching after a little bit of a while out of football it was uh uh a bit of a covid Epiphany I really

    Enjoy the football I enjoy the coaching so let’s transition back in so fortunate enough now to be working full-time in football which is an absolute privilege in one of the roles is is here at L brilliant and like you say you work with both the women’s and the men’s goalies

    So we’ve got some of them here today which which goalies do we have we got three from the the women’s program we’ve got Ariana Grace and M who work within the the books ones and the lightning program and we have the two men two of the men’s performance goalkeepers so

    Toby and Sam from the men’s program brilliant and what is the session Focus going to be today what are we going to be working perfect so we’re going to work on a little bit around the cutback scenario so that half space not quite across but too close to be dealing with

    A 1 V one and probably a little bit deeper than dealing with an angled shot how do we start influencing that and how can we start reacting to some of those cutback scenarios and what we do when that ball’s in that half space a bit

    Difficult for us to deal with now it is a pretty chilly January Winter’s evening I’m expecting loads of work and flying around cuz otherwise I’m going to be freezing but I’m looking forward to it and I’m sure everyone is at home as well so let’s jump straight iny right two

    Touch off we go when we’re ready right Dave you can start favorite glove brand what I’m wearing now probably ho ho got bit of relationship with them have for a few years Toby what about you yours look quite interesting uh my my favorite is Roy Roy yeah Ariana favorite goalkeeper

    Oh Edison Ed feet for his feet yeah and what about you merrys of course yes nice repping the love for alumni up the MS um Dave what about you favorite goalie we’ll go old school with uh pet Michael yes why just thought he was uh different especially back then yeah um brought a

    Bit handall to the the the football bought some different techniques are you a United fan Dave that’s I am not no I’m a villa fan for my uh for my sins Toby what is the skill that you have improved the most while at L bre um I would have to say uh probably

    My explos explosive saves maybe yeah a lot of working in the gym yeah um shout out power base yeah for sure I think that’s helped a lot Ariana what about you skill that you’ve improved whilst you’ve been training uh I think crosses cuz I’m quite short so um I think it’s

    Quite natural that um Heights a big disadvantage so I think working with David with the crosses nice just getting repetitions in brilliant right well I think that’s that’s what done but standard was very good I’m impressed with that right Dave onto the session take it away set up so we’ve done a

    Little bit distribution we normally work a session we’ve done it with a bit of two touch or some distribution of stuff and then go to a bit of a handling Activation so we’re on with what looks like a million cones first setups in the orange cone so splitting in three we’ll

    Do lightning three and then the the men three two serving one working yeah in the orangee so it’s just an activation just a bit of handling just get some movement in and around the orange two boxes right love it start with a little movement in right we don’t often ever

    Make a save from a stationary position and just stay there right so it’s a little movement in we’ll move to the side first so little step in from a volley from the side which is Toby which is from M and then it’s a little turn spin drop volley from your opposite

    Right super simple little activation through four or five each cycle through and we go from there nice just keep it flowing keep it moving whenever you’re ready then perfect little volley little spin drop hands nice we’re flowing we’re flowing good Beauty five or six or so get your hands

    Warm get set and then we’ll spin it through Change Change Service good spin drop good go it nice spin drop perfect perfect good good y hands you sol like it drop nice good hands good hands that’s it hands step love it feet nice one more set love it do six or

    So six hold it there just opposite Sid so we’re just going to work both sides we work left we work right just a little point to think about through this from that side position there first thing we’re turning his head right head’s the first thing that’s going

    Giving us a picture of what to see out there then the body follows right if I turn and see something that’s miles out there I’m not going to step and drop in here I’m going to go and step and play with a play that’s going up out the

    Pitch here so focus on that second bit is all about that hit mobility and that movement that speed of turn so we’re driving off what is the front to spin and drive back into here yeah yeah nice Beauty on you again same thing yeah good nice that head turn gives us a

    Picture where we’re thinking I’m in a little bit of trouble here six yards strike coming in let me drop and buy myself a little bit of time that’s good good standards last one nice nice job last one yeah spin round you got that yeah good so cold yes good hands

    Nice watch all the way in got it good yeah shape you good hands cold nose good lad looking like good hands nice nice oh sorry good love it I love it I love it yeah nice nice Spin and drop good yes great hands great hands pal hands super set

    Nice shape love it same as the original side just change the movement up this time right so I’ll demo out this side we’ll take the volum from here instead of spinning and dropping the picture we see which I know it’s not going to be different but we’ll imagine it’s there I

    Can step out and get down the line a little bit now they’re further back but I’m going to vary it up if I come back to Sam just B one to me pal we’re going to take that there and then the third set is roll back trck punch it into me

    Straight away love it that’s it it’s three to do all right so we’ve gone from volley spin I’m under pressure I’m going to buy myself some time to see actually I’ve got a little bit of an opportunity to get down it take it there and then we’re back we react and we’re just

    Punching in off that one there nice easy perfect love it same again just four or five cycle through sorry oh sorry s hold done one more oh sorry good just a little roll perfect nice yeah love it good you arean good yeah you’re in hands hands step hands nice little roll

    Recover drop set perfect that’s your one that’s your one you’re flying now you’re going yeah last one well done yes Toby hand good hand in there love that set set good love that mate well done left hand throw love it shape well dealt with awkward step p in that’s fine that’s

    Fine that’s fine it’s good yeah hands nice little recover set it yeah beauty Beauty good hands good hands like it like it perfect opposite side last set of the activation and we’re done just a couple of points on this the same as that little spin in there so the

    First first set we’ve gone and dropped back in even though our movement’s backwards make sure our body weights forwards same as that little rolling there we roll out there I’m moving backwards but where possible keep all our weight forward we don’t want to be that human ramp back into the

    Goal second Point pass me the ball Grace the speed in which we roll that back is going to drive how much we can recover back in if I’m rolling that back really slow I’ve got the ability to come all the way back in and get set pass it

    Into me again please guys if I’m rolling that quick fast in there I’m only going to be able to recover a certain way I’ve got to get set as soon as that trigger comes in there yeah so like you say there Dave with it’s not necessary to

    Get all the way back in if it’s better to just be set ready for the strike you don’t want to still be moving when they serve yeah we say this a little bit I’d rather be set in the wrong position than not set trying to get into the right

    Position so if I’m not quite all the way back but I’ve got to get set because the trigger’s coming set don’t be still moving as that strike comes in yeah all on your pace of of your role will dictate how far back you can go good hands nice run

    Start the session a little bit distribution footwork warming up little bit of hand activation hand activation and then we get into painting some pictures getting some scenarios getting some and there’s still a little bit of the applicable kind of what you’re doing in the session in terms of the% dropping

    In 100% so you’ll see what we progressed to yeah the theme now of that spinning dropping or stepping and recovering will maintain through the whole session and that whole moving back but staying forward yeah he’s really key to this whole session running right orange cones for the next

    Little bit we’re starting to do the similar sort of movement similar sort of activity but put it relative to a goal so we’ve got little mini white goal we’ll work with to start with right so we’re out for a volley we’re spinning dropping in I’ve now got a little mini

    Goal to work in volley in to start with and build from there volley volley just volley volley get the themselves pitch dimensions get ourselves used to where we are on a Pitch Perfect on you whatever you ready in sh good hands toe love it mate yes sh super great speed good

    Hands yeah four five six anything just get yourself feeling it just get your bearings of where you are on a pitch yeah ready hands you set oh what the hell love it yeah love that love it all Sam handing it nice it good little step good

    Hands Spin and drop good head first as always nice y good it’s in spin drop nice like it like it yeah sharp that got a sh decent speed job yeah good good good let go let’s go again four five or so don’t mind it I don’t mind it it’s

    Good nice and yeah spin that head and make sure it’s ahead and then we rest of us goes yeah we just really sharp and snap it round there nice better better good very good we’re just going to progress it now so we’re talking about cut backs and

    That half space outside there right if we’re outside if it’s outside the eight Yard Box our start position probably going to be set up somewhere in here dealing with a cross right yeah if that’s cut into the angle inside the box I’m more worried about angled shot and

    I’m dealing with it in here if we go that distance out but the line of an angle where are we setting what’s our Challenge and our Challenge from that point here is probably a little bit defend the goal in here yeah yeah that’s the scenario we’re putting in like you

    Say moving closer towards the front post depending on how further down the line and how close to you they are exactly exactly and you’ve got to sort of then in between right if if if you then I’m transitioning as that Ball’s coming this way I can transition into this space or

    Off that angle if that’s coming that way I’ll start on the angle and I’m still transitioning into this space it’s that zone there that we’re worried about and that cut back scenario there is a potential if that then drives in there we’re going to release down the line and

    Make it into a 1 V one but when it’s in that space might be a bit of pressure might be something going on we’re worried about a cut back into this space here all right so let’s start ramping it up a little bit so two surfs all the

    Balls on the outside cones out here now M just drop another one with Grace at least two out there first one’s going to be a little low dive save down so just a little rolling nothing too complex nothing too difficult roll it back get up and then it’s a pass from there into

    That space first time finish into this Zone in here only working in your little small goals only you killing me here or what n first one top in and around so down a collapse roll it back up Let the goal get up and reset before you Fizz it across give him

    Chance to spin in drop and make a save you good four to do that’s it now get in tense roll it back off passes out there little you’re right fo it right yeah perfect perfect that’s it that’s it that’s it set pun covered well covered mate

    Yeah yeah right foot straight to left my bad nice up set little recover back in good set punch and love it to one more go one more go for a four good nice Ariana uh squ a blow pick up spin set good recover good nice nice ready M on you

    Nice nice in good good well dealt with Grace my bad which which save there is more difficult first or second seconds 100% right fiz sharp reactions it’s tough in there how can we go and affect that first one more how can I turn that first one into something that actually

    Is might be five yards six yards that I can still go and do that same save that I’ve not got a spin and react to this one in here thoughts how can it go and affect something yeah you could rushing out when it’s under control it’s quite an

    Easy Square exactly exactly if you’re coming screaming down here you you’ve left your goal right neutral setting here right if we’re not neutral set if we’re giving it that lean you’ve got that option to slide in there or if I’m leaning this way I’m not going and influence anything out

    There if we are let’s give myself two here would we back ourselves getting down and covering that there probably yeah neutral set gives us an opportunity still to get probably an extra yard or two yards out here I’m not saying we ever relinquish our responsibilities of defending the goal

    100% prior number one defend the goal but if I can still defend the goal from here I can get down and cover that but go and influence a little bit more out here 100% do it cuz I would much rather do a low dive save there and have to

    Spin in and wear one or whatever reaction save we’ve got in there right foot and you’re leing a then you got to think about I’ve got to do way left foot you can cheat that little bit more cuz you know what they’re going to be doing and probably even even more

    More detail that if they’re cutting back from here I’m still probably worried a little bit about the angled strike but if they’re really really tough down the by line on the stretch there’s no way they’re scoring near post on the stretch from in here right Edge a little bit further

    Yeah it’s all relative to what that game scenario is but don’t relinquish our responsibilities of defending the goal but can I make my life easier by doing a low dive save into there get an extra yard or two rather than have to deal with the spin and the reaction cuz

    That’s a tough one good same again opposite side yeah good in yes nice hands sh good great foot Ariana great foot hamstrings back right good put it back in there nice in right hand great hand good good it’s the importance of that white forward yeah so

    If you were white back there you’d have never got down to that whereas you forward you can get down to it perfect yeah you change your boots over Conor other the feet good in spin set nice good hands good hands don’t be so safe can we still be

    Here now so I’m here I can still get to there but I can go and get out further there does that make sense so it’s only a yard it’s only two yards but you’re just go into effect to make that first one easier let’s go love it loads easier

    A difficult save that second one right turning in that’s a bit of a reaction save don’t like to always do it but can we at some point be more Progressive and go and influence the game we’ve said it on here can I not relinquish my responsibility on his but can I do a

    Little bit there to go and influence it out here cover some stuff Samu you made a great touch on there that one that you probably wouldn’t have reached if you were tucked in this close does that make sense second one now is there a way instead of just spinning in and being

    Reactive we could be a little bit more proactive in there thoughts especially based on the take aamp good good or the pace of the pass right if that pass is slow can I spin and go actually or I’m going to get out to there and play almost like a block in

    1 V one scenario yeah little bit more proactive in terms of what we’re doing rather than just spinning in and being reactive in here unbelievable if we making saves and plugging holes and making in that spot Wicked do it but if that pass is slow or now there’s an

    Option to take a touch and play can we get out get into a block shape spread shape whatever it might be yeah Freedom now so first one is not going to be a little collapse we’ve done too much we’ll do too much of that if we’re not

    Careful so first one’s just going to be punching low get down roll it back drop it in there Grace just so we can work it through so punch it in low to me perfect roll back hold wait wait wait wait wait you’re no choice of path fast or slow I

    React to that touch or no touch your call yeah little bit more now thinking about it problem solving tag of touch can I get out to it is it slow can I get out to it again but just lock the first one roll it back don’t move until that pass

    I’ve got time to get down but as soon as I’m dealing with something from five yards I probably want to set a little bit lower cuz my worry is the stuff down in and around here it’s unlike it’s not unlikely but up there from that angle I’m probably covering the crossbar here

    You well probably less yeah definitely if I’m stepping down it I’m getting right low into that shape there but like with one v1’s right if we’re going to close that down we’re starting higher and as we’re traveling we’re moving lower so if I’m getting down it I’m

    Really good the progressions the buildup um works like you say from those really solid foundations to get to something hopefully that gives problem solving variations for players to work with a and finish with something that looks like a game this all still builds from that first basic progression and

    Session was a really inter way of doing it big group for a group but like you kept everybody in that phase of development yeah and and working we we run the same session side by side so to have that and knowing we’re working with small bit so the goals can work um ways

    For other coaches to do that with large groups is to split sessions and do half goals and work in half goals and half spaces um to then bring it together like we did at the end so yeah yeah was good and and Brilliant to see like you say

    The performance group from Men’s the lightning Performance Group from the women really enjoyed having that mix of from both teams just to show the level that those guys are working at I you must enjoy working with that quality of goalkeeper yeah it’s it makes it easier

    1. 19:38 in, if you look at the game Chelsea 6-1 Middlesbrough and Chelsea 2-0 goal. We GK coaches must rethink how we train our young keepers. Why stand at the post, or a few step out from the post when we easy can save a shoot to the post even if we stand slighty more central and have the cheast in a angle towards the field? We all know that the ball will target the players in Golden zone. We cant stand with our backs against the goal. We have to rethink our traning.
      This also applies to that block that is always trained in all situations. Look at the first goal and you will see how incredibly bad it is in the penalty area..But still everyone says it's so good.
      This is not criticism, but food for thought. Why isn't anyone watching matches at the very highest level and thinking. Are we training the right things? Why are there goals in situations goalkeepers practice on, shouldn't we change something? The outfield players change their game every year and if you look back in time, an incredible amount has happened.
      I don't train my goalkeepers to stand at the post on cut backs, and they have increased their save percentage as they are quicker in the center

    2. I play football for my school only in the fall, and I have a goalie camp starting today. I haven't been able to play goalie for a few months, but have been staying in shape and keeping my reactions up with basketball. Do you have any tips for me?

    3. In my opinion, it's outdated to teach goalkeepers to go down with one leg on low balls. Why do they do this? Otherwise, a super interesting video!
