Belgium have not had a Tour de France winner since Lucien van Impe in 1978 and much hope has been placed on Remco Evenepoel shoulders to end this long draught but is it too tall of a feat in his debut Tour de France?

Hello everyone and welcome to another video here on the cycling Dan YouTube channel or if youd rather listen to us on Spotify as well and today I’m joined by Patrick Blake of ALU cycling and one third of the Eon cycling podcast and today the question is can robco Veno
Become the first Belgian win since 1978 since luchan van impo won it and I mean Patrick Robo wel espania Champion already won the World Championships on the road and in the time Tri such a sensational Talent yeah what do you think of Ru I think that he is one of the most
Exciting riders in the Pelon I think it’s really good that we’re going to finally see him at the to France it feels like a couple of years that we’ve been playing this sort of smok and mirrors game with lefa and he’s been like all Remco we’re not sending him
Just yet but it feels really good that this year we’re going to have Revco alongside rogl on a different team GAA with the caveat but he is coming off theer Talia and of course yis ferard who has won the last two editions so we’ve got the four B massive GC contenders
Going into this race Revo of course on debut we wait and see how he does but I’ve got quite a lot of high expectations for the young Belgian on his debut I mean the last time we talked about a rider winning a potential ground
Tour it was one of Uso going to the jro and then UAE messed it all up by announcing T going to the jro like said but we’re going to flip it because uh we’re going to talk about the team first and Patrick I want you to still remain a
Patrick but try and transfuse into or transform into Patrick lafra for this next section and uh we know how strong yomo are despite losing rogl and potentially not having W Bernard because he’s going to the jro and we’ve seen U team Emirates team which is just absolutely crazy with four
People who could be leaders mikanda obviously he was brought into this team to strengthen them but who is the other team who are the other Riders you’re picking and what’s kind of your logic behind your selection I think I’m going to plan on piggybacking off of the work of other
Teams because I think that they will be so concerned with kind of beating each other but yumbo and uee and Bor will be S so much Pace but I think I can make a team which is more ruler focused to try and help them go through all the Sprint
Stages and the more chaotic kind of positioning into climes I think that’s going to help him out more than having some kind of you know BC tier climbers who are just probably going to get spat within half of the way up the climb because then it’s not really much use I
May as well have the rulers there to help us through the chaotic stuff especially the first opening kind of weekend I think that’s going to be really important to be well positioned in those CLS in Italy so I’m looking at as green and lampart are absolute locks
In this team for me alongside probably somebody like katano I think makes it into this team fairly easily for me and somebody like Casper pedison as well might be really good but I will also include like you say Lander really has to be here but who are going to be maybe
One or two other climbers like a James Knox or a mazard vaka van Zen vanilda although vanilda has made us intentions clear that he wants to do another grand tour but whether he should probably come here I I don’t know um see our quick this is the most important mission for
Belgium win the Tour to France you and I did not exist when they won the Tour to France last time YouTu didn’t exist nothing existed it was a pre it was literally prehistoric era I just think that bilder dinosaurs were alone vilder for me basically he will be worth while
Bringing so long as he could be on a similar level to the other like super domes that the other teams would bringing like a cus like an Adam Yates like a hindley or vov or whoever it is that Bor are taking as rogl is super domestique and if he’s not going to be
On that level then what’s the point in having him there if he’s already going to be out the back it seems a little bit pointless when Remco could just work off of the coat Tails like as long as he has Landa there I think that he’ll probably
You know be fine with just the one guy there to help him out to position him you know if he needed to get to the front of the line and just kind of get on the wheel of somebody he has that guy to take him there so I’m thinking yeah
Quite rer heavy and it means you can get through that gravel stage get through the opening weekend and get most importantly the stage like stage 14 which is a toor the tomor lay there 70 km of flat that’s going to be an insane break formation phase if he has a
Mechanical if there’s a crash that he’s caught behind he’s on a what poorly tabed nature break I want more rulers there to help him out in that situation where 60 kilogram climbers are not going to be as useful in that scenario but not used to getting their elbows out and I
Would rather keep Remco safe in those chaotic scenarios at work of others in the Hills that’s why they never signed EV nobody signed EV but for even it he’s he’s somewhere in Colombia just listening and then suddenly why is my name being involved um well looking at the route
Like you said Italy start is quite an interesting one cuz you’ve got the essentially the geod milia the San LCA climb I’m not sure if Remo has actually done that race before either way he hasn’t won it but he is as we know very good Le B Le so something like that
Would you rather grab the yellow jersey in the beginning and then kind of like build up a sort of deficit oh no not at advantage and then kind of lose it and then hopefully you survive until the last time trial in nice or Monaco n or
Are you thinking more that you leave it late I want to leave it late I want to poach this of a final TT is what I I don’t think that sudar quickstep have the Firepower to be holding off all of the other co-leader attacks from UAE
With their four leaders HS and yonas Rob is by himself so he’s a bit easier to tame but that’s quite a lot between yumbo and UE who are very experienced of this sort of thing who are just going to be launching Riders I just don’t think that SAR quickstep have the manpower to
Be controlling that so you may as well just ride the coattails stay as close as you can and then hopefully just pit them on the line with a TT very pigat esque from 2020 that’s the the vibe that I’m going with with Remco the problem is that it’s a long-term strategy you’ve
Got to get through the whole race on scape and basically make it to that stage like stage 19 and 20 you got to make it to those stages which contain the Bonet which is the big concern for me considering remco’s history of bottling Big Mountain stages that’s my
Main concern but if he can make it through stage 20 and he’s within 30 seconds of the lead I do think that he could pip it on the line with a really good TT I mean I think this is the scenario that the organizers are screaming that they want I mean he is
The world champion in the time TR well he has won a well toia neither Pacha or Y have done that so it’s true but vingo like how is he gonna stay with vingo I’m just gonna I think the main thing is that Remco just needs to avoid
Those really bad days we’ve seen days where he’s been dropped but he hasn’t been dropped really badly like that’s the a Nevada stage you know he was dropped but he only lost 15 seconds say to RIT we’ve just got to avoid that Welter like TOA stage capitulation as
Long as you avoid that and you can just negate the losses I do think that rebco on the TTS will probably gain time back on Jonas I mean we saw it in the Welter this year and you know Jonas doesn’t just like he spells out TT Midway like you know yonas
Isn’t you know Remco put time into it m so it’s very possible that Remco can gain a little bit of time in the TTS and then you know it’ll lose it a little bit in the mountains no I think that’s fair enough I I think it’s going to be a hard well
Saying that in a Danish shirt bias but yeah I think it that is probably the way that they’re going to have to do it cuz uh I mean vingo and him haven’t been like up against each other in every any race that I can really think of other
Than the welto we saw in Andor that rco got the best of him but that was a very short finish in terms of the verdict Patrick are you going to validate the title of this video I have a really bad reputation for this I’m not I think I don’t think Remco
Is going to win I think really will come second because I just I think there’s a there’s the question mark over Patu and Z which is casting a bit of doubt in my mind rogich is just a Perpetual question mark to me because I never really know what to expect from
Him and yeah yonas is just the Crypt tonight of this I don’t know how it’s going to be done like how how you going to beat him but I do think that Remco on debut will finish up the podium I mean that that’s huge in itself
Uh I don’t think he’s going to win he’s not going to do it tadet in my books but I do think he is going to be the Belgian writer who ends this trout I don’t know what year is so that’s kind of a like a pseudo win like in the future consolation
Prize yeah we believe you are the next one we just don’t think it’ll be this year yeah and I think he’s going to finish fifth in this one but considering it’s like a debut tour like you said any result in the top five is going to be quite impressive if you weren’t called
Rco venol yeah there’s a lot of expectation about him but like I say on debut it’s very few people do do really well on their debut unless your name’s pachu yeah but anyways that’s basically it for this video this little discussion about R let us know down in the comments who
Well if you think he’s going to win this year and if not this year what year do you think he’s going to win and if you haven’t already subscribed to the channel and if you want to see more of Patrick check out how do cycling as well
That’ll be in the description down below and if you want to see even more of Patrick then check out the Ashman hping podcast with that thank you very much for watching and we will see you around

simple: he does not
Yes! If Roglic, Pogacar, Yates, Kuss, Almeida, Ayuso and Vingegaard all DNF. Unless Carapaz or Hindley beat him.
I would love it if he did…. Imagine the meltdown, the comments section will be gold
Noone beats Vingegaard.
What kind of data is there on Remco and third week TTs? I think Jonas will be ahead here too. Remco just doesn't seem like a week 3 GT rider to me.
Out-dope Jonas. Otherwise, no chance.
unkess 5-6 other guys crash out, Remco cant win at least not this year. Would be fun to see though!
"How Does Remco Evenepoel WIN The Tour de France 2024?" <<– Remco keeps asking himself that question every night, till he falls asleep!
his battle will be for the fourth place, unless something bad happens to the three obvious favorites, and even then he still has to beat yates, jai hindley, carlos rodrigues, all of which are able to drop him in a grand tour. But that's what the logic says, let's see what he can do
I'm 54 years old and I can confirm Dinosaurs were alive when the last belgian won the TDF
If… Remco “can” control his emotions, a very big IF, then the answer can be yes. 2 things he has to do.
1: on mountain stages he can’t ride in front of another leader and drag that person up a mountain. He needs a tactical genius that he trusts.
2. He HAS to remember this is a 3 week race. He CAN match other climbers, but if Jonas goes, he has to manage his effort and control his time loss. He MUST manage his energy expenditure, less he blows like la Veulta.
A TT on the final stage, can certainly give him a real chance.
I’m taking the field, but it’s certainly possible for him to win.
Jonas is by far the main obstacle. But if he crashes out, gets ill or something like that, then it is game on. Remco has beaten Roglic before and Pogacar might not quite have it after winning the Giro.
He’s not GT rider …. Definitely overhyped
I can't see Remco even podium this year but agree he will break the Belgian drought down the line, in two years or more.
Remco will do fine guys. If is was not for covid he would have won the giro of 2023 . Even with covid in his boddy he won the TT in the Giro ! Remco is good enough in the high mountens, he proved it in the last vuelta what he can do ! he dominated the last week . He just must ride smarter like MVDP ….
I don't see Remco winning this TDF. He will have to beat the pog the rog and Jonas
He will win white
Win a stage
And get a top ten
80% of Remco statergy should be keeping calm, take time where he can.
Yes he can.
But he won´t.
Cause Vingegaard, and Roglic will have to have a few bad days in the mountains than, or accidents.
Pogacar will have to have be not recovered from the Giro.
All those 3 things and a few more will have to happen for Evenepoel to win it.
Cause you will also have Kuss, Yates, Pidcock that can do very well..
Especially if the biggest favorites are out of it.
No. But he will win a stage or two. So, there's a decent chance he'll crash into somebody while celebrating.
No.
i think when you compair them in TTs and even mountain stages in the Vuelta last year you ignore the fact that Vingegaard wasnt prepared at all for a Vuelta, which is why he was a lot better in the last part. but for sure he was miles off his Tour de France form. for example, i dont think Evenepoel would have beaten Vingegaard in last years TdF TT and also on mountain stages he was wayyyy better in the tour then in the Vuelta so Remco would have lost way more time in those too. all in all, i think Remco needs to improve lots to last year and dont have any bad days then he might stand a chance. specially against Vingegaard, who seems to have no bad day at al in his last 2 Tour de Frances.
If a major crash happens that takes out all the other favourites in a big pile and Remco avoids it. That is the plan.
Why is Remco hyped up as a Tour de France winner? There's no way. He's a brilliant rider but not a TdF winner, top 10 if he doesn't fully explode in the hors cat stages.
