Squirrels, Family Visiting, and our Second Event | Queen’s Escape

We’ve been trimming trees to protect the château and also to keep the squirrels from getting into the attic. Karen’s family came for a perfect-weather visit with lots of outdoor projects and shopping. Then we hosted our second major event – one night of a 5-night dance presentation. We can’t wait for the Orangery work to be completed so we can expand our hosting capabilities. 🙂

Queen’s Escape was inspired by the 4 years the Belgian royal family stayed at Château de La Tuilerie during WWII. In particular, it is for the Queen. The king took shelter at a different location in France. We’ve named each of our guest rooms after great Queens of the past and present from around the world. Margrethe, Eleanor, Catherine, Himiko, Cleopatra, and soon our bridal suite will be ready in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.

With it’s sprawling green meadows, 100-year-old trees, and historic location in the small medieval town of Gluges, the 200-year-old château is truly an escape. With 5 guest rooms to rent and a stunning Orangery, we look forward to welcoming you for a visit or to host your wedding or event.

We are Karen and Bo Christensen a Danish American couple who met in Germany in 2016 Bo is an airline pilot and Karen is a freelance advertising creative director in late 2022 we bought Deery in Martel France and are working to make it a bed and breakfast and wedding

Destination fit for a queen welcome to Queen’s Escape so we have a chestnut tree that is awful close to one of the towers and I’m going to use this thing here to chop it it can do okay F branches maybe like a double thumb or something you see I cut in the bottom here so about this size you can get

Maybe a little more and then I’m going to climb the steps in the servant’s tower and then cut there’s another two windows up there I’m going to cut it clear off the building so we don’t have any misol when it rains or anything like That So he’s in the servant Staircase so I can sit up here both where bow is just open the window yeah that’s the device you ready yeah it works that string uh can you tell me now there’s one over there to the left mhm and what else uh there was one to the right but

Uh maybe you already got it there’s one more up there yeah okay so that one Maybe I have to come up to you mhm good can you hold it there Mhm okay I’ll go down There this is our servant’s staircase so this one here opens um into the Elizabeth room suite which is Locked and this is not colored glass it’s white glass clear glass and it has a little paper on it I think the paper’s really pretty but That should be open yeah it’s open you see you may to move this bed is this bed in your way yeah you can take it away it’s a spare bed in case people have a child that’s not a baby or a third person they want to put in a room that

Has two then it’s just 15 and we fix that up make it nice that uh banister is very wobbly so don’t lean on it Biking group staying with us today they biked over um 50 mes 50 km today and someone was uh driving the the van with their extra bikes and with all their suitcases while one of their guys was leading them uh to come here and so they’ll stay the

Night with us and then they’ll leave bright and early tomorrow morning and continue on their way but such a super cool group to come and stay with us yeah a full house and I’m panting because we had a smoke alarm going off on the second floor all the way up

There and I was running up and down the steps like three times to reach a like a broom stick up there and turn this stupid thing off and I realized it’s probably the battery because it was installed less than a year ago so I had to find this really tall

Ladder that we used to install it in the first place and it was out in the out building and like the third building the third room that I looked in so I’m running back and forth getting the right key to get in there and then hauling this thing up two flights of stairs

Which um I did it I finally got the thing but I’m not going to lie it was a little scary because I couldn’t tell how to lock the ladder into place but so I just wedged it up against the wall and was very careful but now I’ll change this out and

Put the stupid thing back call Oh Go My parents and my Aunt Ruth has arri have arrived and uh we had a long day of riding train yesterday and got here and we celebrated our oneye anniversary with a dinner here and um and some champagne which was really great and then um everybody went to bed they were really

Tired and then promptly the hot water heater just it it I don’t know what it did but the whole place was smelling last night and Bo and I were opening all the windows and trying to air it out and unplugging the thing and it’s the it’s

The um boiler I think that is the issue so we called the guy and I really hope he comes today cuz you got three people who came from their flight and won a hot shower anyway that’s how it Is So my parents have been here all this week and my aunt and uh so we’ve been doing a lot of tourist stuff and had a few guests but uh just giving them my attention and uh um but now we have a dance event that is happening this

Thursday and so I’m here in the Aerie and I’m just uh cleaning it up dusting away the cobwebs the spiders have been so active this summer so just getting all of the spider webs off of the uh paneling and um sweeping away the big things and then I’m going to vacuum

And mop this floor and then I am going to sweep and mop the tiles um to make it nice for for when the group comes this Thursday um and I was just opening this window so I could sweep the window ledge and a bat drop down you know on the

Ground squeak sque so I put him in the dust bin and took him outside and put him up against a tree and he he took off so hopefully hopefully we we’re bat free moving forward yeah so I’ve swept and mopped tile floors in our work room this

Is the room where we’re going to be uh painting our shutters and I just needed to clean it up because we’re going to put the food for the dance event here and just so people don’t track the dust and dirt from this room over to the wood

Room over there so I’ve cleaned it up and it’s so nice to see these tiles looking pretty and not cover it in a layer of dirt I think I could do a round of just hand scrubbing to get the heavy you know dirt that doesn’t come off easy

Off it uh in the future that’s a guess I have but it looks much better and now I’m going to just give the windows a a better cleaning they’ve still got some layers of dirt around the edges and but hopefully this wood will clean up

Nicely so we have our first fire in the orangerie fireplace it’s a small one and it’s really um Charming I think I think it’s really cozy I think uh people will enjoy to have that going while they sit here and eat and drink I think that could be really really really

Nice yeah let’s see we need one of these mhm three times yeah we need a really big screen now for the orer fireplace cuz you see how big the fireplace is and we’ve got just a little tiny screen in front of it at the moment just to try it out but we’ll

We’ll need to get a pick one but it’s it’s really nice so this is the first time actually that we’ve had the oranger lit up at night it’s kind of exciting so we have the fire going in there and we have the the ex exting lights on and we opened

The big window on the right side just to let some of the smoke out make sure it doesn’t get too Smokey but oh I just love the look of those windows with light behind them we’ve just never even seen it because we’ve we’ve never gone in there and used it at night

But it’s really going to be beautiful once we get the bathrooms done and we get the bar installed and all get it all fixed up and ready to to rent it out out for events and for um wedding dinners I it’s just really special you know we’ve always loved it but uh yeah

We start to see a whole new side to it so we don’t have outdoor lights on the orangerie yet so we are just going to light it up B just lit it up with his work lamp and that puts some lights on the steps anyway Okay these Shield bugs that get in the curtains are just everywhere and they just started coming like I don’t know two weeks ago just the end of September early October they’re everywhere they get in all over the place I vacuuming a billion of them up all the

Time it is the day of the dance party and I am in the kitchen because I need to cook dinner for the seven performers today and they want vegetarian meals which I don’t normally cook but I’m going to do my best I picked out this recipe that’s like a pasta salad

With broccol broccolini Capers and tomatoes that looked really good that I think I could cook in advance and then just have it ready and then I found one it’s kind of similar but a little different and this one was an open-faced goat cheese sandwich with tomato and

Avocado salad so I got the classic rockamore goat cheese that is from this area that they sell in the store and I figure I can take that out at the last minute and I got um a nice um a nice bread from the market like a a big

Baguette and then I can make this salad in advance I think and just have that have that ready so wish me luck cooking vegetarian I think I think it’s going to be fine but what I want to do is get it all ready before 3:30 which is when the

Organizers are going to come and I need to help them to um get the chairs and tables all set up in the arer and then um I want to put some Waters and drinks upstairs uh for the performers they’re going to be getting ready in the Elizabeth

Room they’ve brought a lot of lighting and uh equipment and this is where we’ll have the food it sounds like we have 55 people coming tonight so the whole team is setting up and everything is going well it’s kind of funny I didn’t really expect people

To park all the way over there but I guess that’s perfectly all right you know we have all of the company and the the groups parked over here and uh but everybody else I I guess is starting to to park down there but it’s going to be

Just an awesome event I’m so excited I think I saw one of the people from the company taking a sign down to the end of the road so maybe to put out in front and and stop people so that they uh come to the right place but yeah it’s time
