Is cycling through Germany in 2 weeks too much? With low fitness exhaustion kicks in and we have doubts. Week 1 of our AMAZING WORLD BIKE TOUR is hard

In episode two we cover week one of our final big test, a 1000 kilometer trip from the north of Germany to the south. Our journey continues in Rotenburg an der Wümme where we had spend our first night with our first warmshowers host ever. We follow the river Weser for a total of four days, before we break away from it and take the shortest route to Kassel as our bodies are exhausted and Arev is in a lot of pain due to an inflammation of her hamstrings.

    1. Well done you two! I am taking inspiration from your adventures as I look ahead to my own bikepacking and ultracycling events in 2023. Thank you for taking the time to document your journey, which I will follow eagerly. Safe travels!

    2. Oh boy, this reminds me of my first tour: day 2 a migraine from h-ll, day 3 knee pain so I had to walk, day 4 fever and a cold. And dispite that i still love bike touring! Great videos!

    3. Most would’ve started with weekend touring & lighter loads, giving themselves a chance to harden up a bit. I’m actually impressed with an average of more than 70 klicks per day in your 1st week. At this point it’s important to remember that the gains from physical effort will come after you’ve done more than you’re able to do comfortably, or when you should be resting & fueling your recovery with protein in particular.

Nutrition, water & rest are at least as important to developing strength & stamina as the riding itself – there’s no shame in a day off, & a simple fact of life is that bikes are slow. If a train can get you to friends or family & an extra day or two of rest, just be glad that you’re in a country where that’s an option. Moving forward, that option won’t always exist.

      🤘

    4. Good video

Could you post your route please. Would you recommend this route for someone not from your area?

Also interested in your equipment. Specifically, front rack and panniers. When I did my ride down the pacific coast last summer, I couldn’t get any shop to put on a front rack. Something about fiberglass forks not compatible with racks. made the bike back heavy.

    5. Thank you for sharing your experience. I agree with others that there are no rules when bike touring so if taking a day off or using a train is needed, go for it.

    6. Yeah, starting out slow and building up is key. Listen to your body and rest when needed. If you start too hard, you just end up injuring yourself…
80k a day is a fine pace. But, stuff happens, so a hard and fast schedule should not be your master. Good luck and safe travels! Stop and smell the roses. 🙂

    7. I think you have planned to do too much from the beginning. I would maybe only have done 50km per day for the first two days. That way I can rest before my body is exhausted. My friend who cycled from the Netherlands to China had a target of around 60km per day, and if she did more, she did more. She also took rest days.

    8. You might have figured this out by now, when you are very tired and still have many Km to go, get and drink a Coca Cola. The caffeine and sugar will get you to your camp site. You should plan a rest day after 4 days. Your bodies need to have a day off. I will ride no more than 240km about 4 days then take a day or two off. I try to plan to be in a big town where I can visit museums and see monuments.

    9. greetings from a new subscriber from The Netherlands I am 67 and will start next year on my European tour thank you for showing there is pain as well as joy on the tour and not everything is roses but indeed when you go uphill there is the reward of going down with speed😅😅

    10. Well done you two, hope it gets better for you.

Why only one front pannier on the orange bike? This will add to your fatigue if the weight isn’t balanced.

However, way to just go for your goals.

    11. Wow! I'm going with a much lighter load: no panniers. Everything front/center mounted on the bike. I've planned a route that has many smaller cities and here in the U.S., we have truck stops! So you can always find one and they usually have very nice convenience stores and at least one restaurant (fast food yuk) where you can grab a bite.
You're hungry because biking just 20 miles can burn over a 1,000 calories and you two are biking 3 times that every day!
I would recommend energy bars and bananas and pickle juice (for cramp avoidance) while you're cycling.
Again, I LOVE the 'real' feel of your videos; not over-edited. Just straight up raw footage! Fantastic!
Another rookie mistake, when touring (the pros will tell you) is thinking about completing a 'set' number of km per day. 60 k per day is more than enough. That way you can 'stop and smell the roses,' which is why you're out there, right? And you should ALWAYS be a nice husband! When a woman gives you her time, her life, it deserves nothing less! Step up your game Mathias! 😀
      Stay safe! Another great video!

    12. Sir, from what I can tell, your saddle is way too high as well. Capture a little video from the side and review it. Wishing you many happy, and healthy, miles.

    13. Of all the places to bike I think Germany must be one of the best – the nature is so beautiful, the weather is so often good and for the most part the country is so well organised and clean – love watching these routes you're taking.

    14. There are days when it gets tough , sometimes , I have to rest every 10-15 minutes , not always a bad thing because I drink some water , failing to drink enough is a common mistake even for experienced cyclists as is eating little and often . Around here , in France , its just one long long hill after another , I sometimes take a break half way up , or sometimes stop to take a photograph , so practising starting off on hills is handy . Well done .
