Hello and welcome to another video and yet another Triumph and this is the Triumph Speed 400 so massive thank you once again to Bulldog Triumph uh I’ve ridden the Scrambler earlier on today and now I’m on the speed 400 so it’ll be interesting to see what this is like in

Comparison but I’d kind of like to talk about this bike in isolation as well it is very cold I’m freezing and the roads are horrible but let’s throw our leg over this lovely looking bike and get going we’ll go back to bord of Triumph and I can tell you what I think about

The speed 400 let’s go and once again I would like to say a big shout out to Ultimate add-ons they are a channel sponsor if you’re interested in one of these awesome cases for your precious phone go over to Ultimate ads.com and use the code below to get some discount

Off your order right fire up the dash we have LCD Dash with the analog part as well uh nice and legible really big numbers and characters and so if you got crap eyesight like me you’ll be fine throw my seat over the 790 mil seat height I can flat foot it yes result

Right turn it on you don’t have to clutch in that little single cylinder motor fires into life throw into gear let’s go so the Triumph Speed 400 as I said earlier I’ve ridden the Scrambler 400 x already so this is the second of their 400s I’m riding

Today and they are very very similar so they got the same engine very similar components like the chassis suspension brakes etc etc but there are some slight differences why is it so busy down here it’s the school run this bike still has a 398 CC double overhead cam liquid

Cooled single cylinder motor putting up 39.5 horses at 8,000 RPM and 37.5 newton meters of torque at 65,000 RPM you know it’s low power in terms of what it actually delivers but uh it’s got a nice little dose of talk that does make me giggle we’ve got uh upside down forks up

Front those are big piston 43 mm units so they’re quite girthy who doesn’t love a bit of girth they are not adjustable we’ve got I think it’s 140 mil travel on this bike and at the rear we’ve got a gas Monoshock RSU jobby and that is adjustable for preload and that’s 130

Mil travel I want to say we’ve got 17-in wheels front and rear so a little bit more Dynamic to turn in turns in a bit quicker well a lot quicker actually than the Scrambler we’ve got the uh 10 spoke cast Wheels it’s got par Diablo corser Tire

Actually I don’t know if they’re cses I think they are we’ll have a look in a bit anyway right we just need to keep keep going now the roads are absolutely hideous at the moment lots of flooding lots of mud so let’s talk about braking performance then we have we still have a

Radial brake at the front but this time it’s a four piston unit as on the Scrambler it’s only a twin piston and we’ve got a smaller diameter disc of 300 mil still got the same 230 mil disc at the back and single piston they are by

By which is a company called by which means by Brembo which is a company does all their smaller capacity motorcycles basically it’s Brembo for small bikes you got braided hoses which is a nice feature especially in this day and age that’s quite a rare thing and for a bike

At this price point that is impressive we have a horse of course hello I’ve already talked about the seat tight 700 190 mm the seat is ever so comfortable the bars I’ll be honest the bars feel just as wide as on the Scrambler but maybe they’re

Not but they do feel a bit a bit wide um they are tapered towards the rider a bit more I want to say there’s no hand guards of course this is a fun little machine so this is a lot more Dynamic handling than the scramble because of

The 17-in front wheel it’s also a bit lighter so this is 170 kilos whereas the scramblers is 179 I don’t know what that is in pounds I’ve forgotten so I do apologize but I’m sure you can Google it again in terms of electronics we’ve got exactly the same

Suite of electronics as on the scrabbler so we’ve got a Bosch ABS system we’ve got a switchable traction control ride by wire throttle but there are no riding modes and again I’m guessing that’s because they they’re not really needed you don’t really need a rain mode because it only

Has less you know just less than 40 horses so but it does seem to make the most of it of what it does have yeah this is good fun come on little bike you can do it we’ve got a six speed manual gearbox and it is very slick quite impressed

With that the handling is definitely different enough on this bike to uh to make it noticeable and I quite like it so I think I prefer this I thought I would prefer that’s a nice old tractor isn’t it yeah I thought I’d prefer the Scrambler but actually I

Prefer the handling on this so far do stay to the end because I’ll tell you which bike I would buy with my own own money again we got a bolt on subframe at the rear same frame just uh slightly lower suspension so you know it doesn’t have loads of oomph

But you can sort of just keep riding the torque it seems to pull quite nicely all the way up to that red line oh those brakes are good so big difference there as well is the uh front brake on this bike that four piston caliper is I think that performs much

Better than on the Scrambler which just seems to fade a little bit the more the more power you put through the lever this seems to perform better those extra two Pistons making a bit of a difference it’s also remarkably Light it’s like a little flea like I said it’s got Swit switchable traction control if you wanted to hike some wheelies suspension seems to be set up nicely for the road it’s not overly harsh it’s actually quite for giving but still good enough that it’s not wallowing or running wide into uh

Corners and again the weight of the bike the low weight of the bike is helping that as well yeah I don’t remember the Scrambler being this much fun and it wasn’t like it wasn’t fun but uh yeah this just seems to be a bit more up my street if I’m honest get

Those brakes are nice back brake not too bad oh that Dash is quite good actually you got massive gear indicator there you got the uh the rev counter range to empty the time fuel gauge all the stuff you need as well as the analog Speedo which I quite like I think the analog

Speedo actually suits this bike quite nicely and it certainly helps keep the cost down and we have these lovely little bar into mirrors I quite like those I don’t know if these are standard they might be switch gear is very very very basic but you know it does the job

It’s a little bit Plastic Fantastic but you know for a smidgen under 5K what can you expect and that’s right this bike is less than £5,000 £4,995 brand at spanking new which is just pretty remarkable value actually we have a big truck yeah it seems to want you to rev it a

Bit rev it out and play with it so it’s not it’s not all really grunty low down it’s it’s got enough but it seems to kind of kick in I say around about six or seven It’s s sort of I won’t say hesitates but it it takes it a little

While for the talk to k kick in and that would make that would make sense cuz it makes Peak talk at 6 and 12,000 RPM but you can feel that actually but then it makes Peak power 8,000 it does like to be revved out yeah quite quite enjoyable actually quite a

Rewarding bike to ride and it seems pretty comfortable you know I’m not okay then my legs are slightly more bent up than they are on the Scrambler but I actually don’t think this would cause me too much bother I think the bike looks absolutely fantastic but then the

Scrambler does too it just depends what flavor of bike you’re looking for if you’re like your roadsters then this is going to be more for you but if you like your well scramblers obviously the scramblers going to be for you but they both look nice they’re a a nice uh kind

Of modern take on a an old old old what you call it modern classic I guess so you know looks wise I think this bike looks very similar to its much bigger cousin the street no the speed twin 1200 I think this looks just like a little

Baby speed twin which is you know I guess exactly what it is and I think it looks better than the Street Twin if I’m being totally honest I think it’s a bit more more sporty looking a bit more poised more ready for action right we’re going to go to dual

Carriageway in a second I’m going to zip to the front cuz I’m small room for a little one good sir do clutch leave is a little bit wibbly wobbly just like the lateral movement I didn’t notice that on the Scrambler but it might just

Be the way it is or may perhaps the bolt needs uh tightening up perhaps I think the sound’s not nice I do quite like singles and the exhaust is actually a slip on so you could easily change it to something fruer if you so wanted here we go Power yeah that’s fun oh do come along Jeffrey oh look at that we’ve got some Bricker R in the back here got a little mile Workshop uh thr response much like the Scrambler is very sensitive but uh I wouldn’t say it’s snatchy either it’s just um it’s quite sensitive that’s all

You can modulate it quite nicely if you’re careful actually no is a little bit jerky at low speed sort of the uh on and off nature tiny bit jerky a little bit if you’re a little bit hand fisted like I’m being deliberately by the way if it does jolt you a bit jolty

Bolty right because I’m so skinny oh look there’s a corser with a loud exhaust so this is not the way I was expecting to come but uh you know here we are this real world sort of riding and it’s uh good to see that the bike copes copes with being in community

Traffic without issue there’s no weird heat anywhere it is quite a chilly day though uh it does uh take off quite nicely and of course got the added benefit of it just handling lovely yeah I like that I like that a lot so we’re doing 40 mph in 6th Gear

We’re at 3 in a bit th000 RPM pooling along very nicely the engines are not laboring it’s uh it’s just really Pleasant actually to be to be very be honest I don’t think I’d want an aftermarket exhaust to be honest I think this is uh loud Enough oh got a little popped a little weedie there so again this is just my first ride impression it’s not an in-depth review of any sort of nature because it’s you know an hour or two isn’t long enough for me to really figure out what’s under the skin of a bike but but

Uh it’s a good first impression and uh it’s I think this bike is very fun yeah I think if you’re into your little naked machines this could be right up your street I was actually chatting to a really nice couple at Bulldog Triumph Sam and Jim Jim and Sam it was

Really nice to meet you guys and Jim just bought a speed 400 in blue I think and uh yeah I think the blue the Caspian blue is quite a nice color so you got red you’ve got the Caspian blue and a black one as well so three

Colors I imagine the red one is probably the most popular it does uh have a lovely deep Lush shine to it and it’s got a nice metallic Fleck as well I guess we could talk about some pros and cons if there are any of either so let’s talk about some uh

Negatives now I’ve said that and I don’t really know what I’m going to say about negatives what could we say say you know the engine does get a little bit viby when you’re when you’re giving it the beans and the mirrors get a bit wishy-washy you can’t really see out of

Them but um there isn’t too much negative to talk about actually you got the USB socket up front as well I’m actually charging my phone at the moment uh but that’s not a negative is it D come on what am I going to find that’s negative about the bike you got

To find something uh the C Le this one’s a little bit wibbly wobbly it’s not awful it’s just something I’ve noticed God I’m really struggling to find a negative for this particular bike oh I did see a couple of the fittings looked a bit uh corroded like you know when

They go that that sort of white corrosion um that being said this bike has been riding around in Winter quite a bit uh I’m sure with just a little bit of uh you know bit of a cloth wipe it’ll be it come off fine but you know I thought I’d mention

It but other than that little it’s only on the little sort of metallicy what do you call it the little fitting some of the fittings not all of them just a couple that I saw somewhere like here the the brake reservoir there that’s just a little bit sort of furred up I

Think that’s the phrase I don’t know so yeah little little bit jerky sometimes in traffic but that just could that could be me being a bit hamfisted everything else I really like I love the look The braking for is great that engine is is a real

Peach the new TR series engine I think it’s it’s going to be really popular what I’d love to see is a tiger 400 I think that would be cool but I don’t know whether that would eat into Scrambler customers or not I think it looks great did I say that already I

Might have said that already yeah it looks amazing I think it really does look like the uh basically a shrunk down version of the speed twin 1200 and uh yeah build quality is mostly really really good like the fit and F finish seems to be very high except for the a

Couple of these little things on I just think that’s a case of um the bike’s been ridden around and there’s so much salt on the roads this time of year in the UK because it’s it’s winter we’re right in the midst of winter and uh you know salt is not very kind to

Motorcycles the seat is ever so comforty comforty it’s comforty okay yeah it’s comfortable I am sort of feeling a little bit of pressure on the two bony parts of my bum yes I do have a bony part of my bum you Che Rosal um so I think maybe on a longer ride the

Scrambler would potentially be a bit bit easier to live with uh 13 L fuel tank so it’s probably good for a couple hundred miles I would have thought it being a smaller capacity machine it’s going to be economical 10,000 M service intervals you’ve got I believe it’s a 2-year

Unlimited mileage warranty price like I said it’s four it’s under five grand it’s 4,000 4,000 995 and uh I think that’s remarkable remarkable value LED lights all over you know I’m not going to capture everything there’s there stuff I am probably forgetting but that’s nice don’t know what that was Skyline

Perhaps with some stickers yeah I’m probably forgetting something but I I I really do think this is probably one of the best value motor cycles for under 5K uh it’s really going to be taking the fight to people like Royal Enfield who’ve got you know their scram

And the scram 4 One the the Himalayan it’s it’s going to be a hard sell when you compare Himalayan or sorry Royal infield to this you know like the hunter which is you know about half the power of this and by the way I love the

Hunter 350 I had a really good time riding that bike I think it’s fantastic um I do think that’s a bit I don’t know I think the Royal enfields probably talk speak to a different customer if I’m honest the triumphs but I don’t know tell me what you think in the comments

Yeah all in all cracking bike and like I said uh like the way the engine is finished it looks it looks like any other Triumph except these are built in India but it doesn’t really look too much different I’ve really tried to think of negatives and I I think I’ve been very honest

About things I’ve noticed you know longterm a longterm test would be needed for me to find out what the bike would be like to live with but essentially yeah it’s it’s really decent really decent bike for the money and uh performance is actually not too bad way way more fun than you’d

Think I I would love to take this on I think on a track day like a small go-kart track this would be hilariously fun I’d love to take one right up the uh chicane right I’m going to get some fuel put some fuel in for my friends at

Bulldog Triumph cuz you know they’ve they’ve been nice to me so it’s only right right we’re all filled up but I’m literally just over the road from border Triumph so this won’t take long at all we’ll stop just outside the front of the shop here we

Are so this has been the Triumph uh speed 400 a quick little little little little Walky Roundy so yeah there she is all LED lights with the DRL there’s your Chunky 43 mil Forks so we got uh pelli Diablo Ross a 3 tires and very good they are too there’s your

By four piston caliper radial mounted 13 L fuel tank the seat is quite comfy actually and I think for a Pon that would be quite nice as well there’s the dash basic but functional it works you know there’s your little information button you can cycle through bits and

Pieces uh yes I like it I think it’s a good looking bike there’s the beating heart that new TR series 3098 cc motor it does sound quite nice I think really lovely looks as well and like I say the fit and finish for the most part looks really really high

Quality nice LED rear light as well yeah so like there’s just a bit there just a little bit of sort of the furring up but I think get yourself a little brush toothbrush with some WD40 that clean that right up and that’s probably just because of the amount of salt on the

Road at the moment Bolton SF frame uh bar in mirrors as well yeah it’s a handsome bike for sure and for a a smidgen under 5 grand I think it’s an absolute bargain so thank you very much Bulldog TR for letting me out on the 2 400s today and thank you

For watching if you do go out today remember to ride safe but have fun of course otherwise what’s the point until next time you take care and Peace

    1. Excellent review Dan. No daft music, 360 degree distorted camera footage. Spot on. I’ve a few much bigger bikes but I think I will get one of these. 72 years old so easier to lug around at my age. Thanks for a great video review.

    2. Havent heard before that the Scrambler has a two piston front brake caliper and the Speed a four piston caliper.
I think the Scrambler will be better for a taller person and for someone shorter the Speed.

    3. I test rode the scrambler 400 x (the speed was to small for me at 6ft 2) really nice bike for the money! I liked it! I was expecting it to be cheaply made and gutless and it was the opposite, well made for the price and better than expected poke for 400cc

    4. Thanks Dan. I recently started working at a triumph dealership and these things are gonna sell like hot cakes. Deposits are stacking up for them. I am curious how they will stack up against RE like you said.

    5. Ordered mine. But I took a demo bike out in York. Did not find any snatching at all, at any speed. Really looking forward to March for delivery. Fuel economy is supposed to be high. The demo bike was displaying 64mpg. Finish is superb. Note that UK models are being built in Thailand, not India. But guess parts are made all over the place. Heated grips not yet listed, think Triumph are still sorting out the software.

    6. Would love this as a second bike but hate the tank design, the ‘Jack’ is a bit over the top and tacky looking, to my mind. Having said that great review Dan and as others have said forward facing camera is much better than these distorted ones which are the current trend. Got a great feel for the bike in this review.

    7. On the price front, and like the 350 enfield's with a £5000 new price it stands to reason that the 2nd hand price will be low, 12 months later you should be able to get it for around £4000 so there should be a few bargains to be had 😊

    8. Awesome little bike…FYI £3,600 here in Thailand. The 400cc bike segment in the Asian market is huge, this beauty should sell well.
Great review as ever Dan. Rubber side down.

    9. Great review Dan as always 👏 I got to test ride the scrambler 400x over the weekend. I agree with everything you said. So much bike for the money and incredible value considering the quality of finish. When I tried finding negatives I came up with "maybe a little vibey" and "the mirror wobble at speed isn't great, but not bad at all". I really struggled to find any negatives. Such a cracking bike, think Triumph nailed it with these 400s.
