Describe how a Sterling engine works in detail because quite frankly I don’t get it I it just hurts my head to understand it but what I did read about Sterling engines is that first of all they were invented or patented way back in 1816 by a Scotsman with the last name

Sterling I think it was Robert Sterling s r l i n g and they were invented to kind of counter the steam engine they’re considered an external combustion engine where we’re so used to internal combustion engines so basically all the properties happen from the outside and essentially it works through temperature

Differentiation so the bottom has to be heated by a heat Source in this case it’s the wood stove this particular model has to reach I think 215 or 250° Fahrenheit in order to work so the heat coming up from the bottom pushes a diffuser that’s in that cylinder which

Pushes this Rod up and then you can see these aluminum I guess heat exchangers heat diffusers they keep the top of the engine cooler than the bottom of the engine and then this small piston pushes the cooler air back into that diffuser making it go back down and it’s a

Continuous cycle so as long as you have heat it runs and it’s virtually silent it’s really pretty amazing these engines are also extremely low maintenance the kit comes with a little vial of high temperature oil and this is the only oil that you’re to use to lubricate this fan

And you only lubricate one shaft that’s the one that goes up and down with a diffuser you do that every thousand hours so that’s it as far as maintenance the other thing is just to keep it clean blow it off use the dust cover I keep

Here when you unscrew the top there’s a Little Dipper and just that droplet of oil is all you use every thousand hours I took this off the stove so we can take a closer look at it now the base is still hot so it’s still

Working but let’s take a look and see if we can kind of figure out what’s going on here so in this I’m going to call it a cylinder is they don’t call it a piston it’s a displacer and let’s put this in super slow motion there so there the displacer is

All the way at the bottom and then as this base heats up it pushes the displacer up which pushes this little push rod up and therefore turns this crankshaft while that’s happening the little piston here is coming up and I guess it’s drawing cool air into the top of the

Cylinder the the displacer is going back down and now the little piston is pushing the cooler air into the top and and it’s just a never ending cycle and I still don’t get it but all I know is it works and it’s pretty amazing now the higher the temperature the

Faster the fan spins and looking at the included instructions the operating range for this engine is a minimum of 230° f that’s 110° C and should never exceed 842 de F that is 450° C 842 de is really hot I think that most my stove has ever

Burned up to is maybe 650 and that’s when I’m just just cooking it but it probably runs around 400° 4 50° Fahrenheit so again it’s fascinating to work let’s talk about function I’m going to put it back on the stove and we can talk about how much air this fan actually
