Europe’s rivers are among the world’s most famous rivers, like the Danube and the Thames. In this video I briefly discuss each European country’s longest river that only flows within that country – it must start, flow, and end without leaving the country or forming a national border. Just like the US states video on this topic, I found this really interesting to research, and I hope you enjoy it too!

What’s the longest river in every European country in this video we’ll take a look at the longest river that’s entirely contained within each country this means no rivers that form borders and no rivers that start in or continue flowing into other countries I really enjoyed researching this topic for US

States last month and the European version has just as many intriguing facts to share if you enjoy geography videos like this one make sure to subscribe and let’s get started going in order from shortest to longest first we need to address the countries that just don’t have Rivers

Surprising absolutely no one is the Vatican with Incredible architecture and landscaped Gardens leaving no room for rivers in the world’s smallest country what is a bit more interesting is Malta which has no true Rivers due to its often dry weather small streams do exist but they’re often dry and have

Fluctuating water flow malta’s environment and resources Authority writes that there are just three streams recorded as surface waters and information about them is hard to come by lastly Monaco as part of St Jean Brook but this starts in France which makes it ineligible ible for our purposes it also seems mostly built over

On the Monaco side anyway so Monaco also joins the effectively River European countries Club San Marino finally brings some rivers that I could measure without flying to Malta now there aren’t very many rivers only in San Marino but of the few I found fum Mello to be the

Longest at roughly 5 1 12 km it starts near valron and flows East right to the Italian border emptying into the Morano we’ve got a few more tiny countries left lonstein brings us the combined Val lunar boach Stager boach river which I measured at roughly 10.19 km the process

For lonstein was much like San Marino where I measured the handful of rivers I could see were only in the country despite the two names for the different sections I’m treating this as one River since the name just changes at a reservoir while it flows north andora’s

Longest river is the Vala Doran at nearly 24 km long according to my approximate measurement one of the country’s main highways follows the course of the river as it arcs Westward to the capital region its Confluence with Vala Del Nord forms the grand Vala here which keeps flowing South South

Into Spain Luxembourg is our last very small country and its longest river is the Clair lending its name to clairo Canon in the north it’s known as Waltz Upstream but it’s the same river for all roughly 48 km starting at luxembourg’s Northern end it flows South into the

River wilts kosovo’s longest river is almost double the length of luxembourg’s the cnit comes in at 90 km a North flowing river that originates near fizi along its course it passes through a coal mining area west of the capital Prisa and eventually empties into the iar North of movit back in the

Mediterranean is Cyprus with its longest river the pedo at about 98 km after Rising near the 12th century maryus Monastery it flows north into the capital Nicosia where a popular Trail for cycling and pedestrians follows it after this it swings East and flows to the Sea Montenegro almost breaks the 100

Km Mark with its longest river the maracha which carves its way through the mountainous center of the country and right through the heart of pita a fast flowing yet small River it’s generally unnavigable and form impressive Canyons Slovenia finally gets us to Triple digits its longest river is the svenia

At nearly 102 km originating from the National Heritage site Rinko waterfall less than a mile from Austria it works its way East to Celia which is the country’s fourth largest city from here it turns South and soon meets the Sava River the Netherlands might be the ry’s final destination but the longest river

Entirely in Dutch soil is the 125 km aishel which is actually a Ry distributary it begins southeast of arnam and snakes its Way North ending in the aishel May it’s thought that Roman Canal building under Emperor drusus likely led to the ael’s Ry connection Croatia’s unique shape leaves it kind of

Early on the list its longest self-contained river is the BEDA at about 133 km a small river that flows across the northernmost part of the country it rises near the Slovenia border and winds across the region East to the river drava Denmark starts off the Nordic countries with Gau a 149 km

Long river whose name translates to godream it traverses Central Jutland rising from a spring and flowing through many lakes it ends in the randers Fjord just east of yep randers Denmark’s sixth largest city across the Baltic Sea in Estonia we find the river vandu at 162 km long called poogi Upstream of the

City Vu it starts in the village of sna and follows a heavily Meandering route through Southeast Estonia finally meeting lake pipus near the Russian border finishing off balock is Belgium of course the longest river entirely here is the UR which ends in Li after a 165 km Journey it’s formed by the

Confluence of its Western and Eastern branches only 55 km south of its endpoint as the crow flies a testament to the winding path the river takes hungary’s longest river is the zaga a narrow river that runs for 179 km through Countryside and small cities east of Budapest emerging very close to

The Slovakian border it makes its way south and empties into the Tisa at the city of sonok just south of here in Serbia is the great morava coming in at 185 km long this is the final stretch of the morava system formed by the Confluence of the west and south

Branches in stach the West Branch is 184 km and also entirely within Serbia but this is typically considered separate from the great morava back up north in lvia is the river olre the river gawa is much longer at 452 km but is barely disqualified for forming a small part of

The Estonian border the alre flows for 188 km West from liair Parish until it reaches the city of ogre where it empties into the delava the longest river entirely in Albania is the Deval it flows through southern Albania for 196 km starting very close to gree and ending in a Confluence with

The awesome river which creates the San River the Deval is the site of a number of planned or underway hydroelectricity projects North Macedonia takes us just east of here the 211 km long balitsa is fully in the country a tributary of the longer vardar which passes into Greece with various concerns about pollution

From factories on its banks a management project was started in 2012 to address these issues time for another island country Iceland’s longest river is thoro checking in at 230 km long this river is glacially sourced emerging from hofu in the heart of the country and cascading through the Southwest Countryside its

Name translates to Bulls River 100% CG approved back on the mainland is Portugal and its longest river the Mundo this one runs for 234 km starting high up from a spring in Sara diella and running Northeast through the national park before quickly turning Southwest to flow past one of Portugal’s largest

Cities Kimbra and to close out the Baltic states we have Lithuania the zento is its longest self-contained River a 246 km tributary of the nerys it rises in the Lakefield Gruta Regional Park and meanders its way Southwest ending up in the NYS near the city of

Yava well congrats you’ve made it to the halfway point of the video if you’re enjoying it so far please do consider subscribing my YouTube stats say that 90% of people watching videos like this one are not subscribed thank you so much for helping to change that and by the

Way channel members you guys will get an exclusive behind the-scenes look at this video very soon okay let’s get back to it Austria starts off the second half of the list with the river ends at 253 km it cuts its way through the mountainous center of the country after rising in

The rodot tower and mountain range the river’s Endo like so many others of Europe is the danu which it flows into just southeast of Lin I was a little surprised to see European turkeys so high up this list but the arenna river meanders its way across most of the

Region for 281 km despite starting so close to the Black Sea it actually heads Southwest to meet the Marissa a major river forming the Greek turkey border that empties into the aian sea Bosnia and heroina joins the aonomus River Club or well half aonomus the Bosna River

Starts at a woodland spring very close to Saro making it a popular outdoor spot the river then runs for 282 km north passing through Zenit and meeting theava at the Croatian border over in mdova is the rout River a small and winding river that works its way through the north

Half of the country for 286 KM on its Journey to the Nea River it passes through belt SE the second largest city in mova most of the river’s Basin is fertile land and used for agriculture Switzerland brings it back to the Alps here we find the river AR flowing from

The unar glacier on a curved course through pristine Alpine Wilderness and many of Switzerland’s famous cities like Interlocken and baron after 295 km it finally ends up in the rine at the German border the longest river in GRE is the hakman fascinatingly it starts just a few kilometers away from the

Source of Albania’s longest river but on Greek soil of course it then runs 297 km through Macedonia reaching the aian sea at a large Delta plane Southwest of Thessaloniki you might have been expecting the temps for the UK but the river Severn is about 9 km longer at 354

The Severn starts in Wales in the Cambrian mountains then flowing into England and the cities of Shrewsbury Worcester and Gloucester before finally returning to the Welsh border as it widens into the Bristol Channel Ireland narrowly beats out the UK with its River Shannon measuring in at 360 km beginning

In the north just 4 km away from Northern Ireland it flows South to limmerick where it meets the Shannon Estuary the river’s Watershed drains 1/5th of Ireland’s land area and right back to the Balkans we go with Bulgaria the iscar is 368 km long rising in rela

National Park and flowing North to the danu on its Journey it passes through the east side of the capital Sophia providing drinking water to Millions of people and running underneath a Runway of the airports Slovakia breaks the 400 km Mark with the V at about 403 km

Flowing across and draining most of the country’s West half it’s vital to Slovakian development with various hydroelectric power stations canals and major cities like gilina and trenin found along its course and wouldn’t you know it czechia is next in line with another River starting with v the vava

Is 430 km long and is just barely all in czechia as it starts 500 M away from the German border the river is widely recognized as a landmark in the city of Prague and an emblem of Czech national pride speaking of Germany it makes its appearance with the 525 km long river

Mine It Begins by winding its way through Northern Bavaria passing through rsbg before entering Hessa and of course the city of Frankfurt on mine shortly after Frankfurt its Journey ends at its Confluence with the rine interrupting this central European tour is Sweden and its longest river the Delvin which is

541 km long this number which mostly confident in after a rough self-measurement includes its longer upper branch of the vast Del Alvin it flows through mostly rural Central Sweden Rising near Norway and ending in the Gulf of bnia across said Gulf is Finland which kicks off the top 10 with

Kok at 550 km long it traverses most of Lapin Province the northernmost region of the country it starts not far from the Russian border and most notably passes through the heart of renami the main city of the region the longest self-contained River in balus is the

Baraz running 613 km across much of the country it’s perhaps most notable for the Battle of berzen where Napoleon’s Army lost tens of thousand as they retreated in Failure from Russia berzen is now a French slang term for catastrophe yeah that checks out Romania takes eighth place its longest river is

The ult at 615 km long this River follows an impressive path through the Carpathian Mountains snaking its way south to the danu where it ends very close to Bulgaria’s iscar Confluence with several dozen reservoirs along the river it’s an important source of drinking water and irrigation champion

Of the Nordic countries in this category is Norway with the river glomma flowing for 621 km it emerges in central Norway near the Swedish border heading south through various small cities east of Oslo and finally hitting open Waters in the city of Frederick stad Italy’s famous Po River is sixth place on the

List at 651 km long starting in the Alps not even 2 km from France it winds east across Northern Italy and passes through major cities like Turin the PO Valley as it’s called is among Europe’s Most agriculturally and industrially productive regions starting the top five is Ukraine’s Southern bug river which

Flows Southeast across the country’s West half for 86 km a navigable river in the South near molive the country has tried to reinvigorate Freight traffic The River’s End at bug Estuary is crossed by a large swing Bridge allowing ships to pass the abro is the longest

River only found in Spain a 930 km long river running through the northeastern regions of the country notably passing right through zaragosa one of Spain’s five largest cities it’s also the second longest river that flows into the Mediterranean Sea behind only the Nile France takes third place and brings us

The first River over 1,000 km long the lir at 1,6 km long it arcs across the country from the mif central to the Bay of bis draining over 20% of French land it’s been critically important to human activity in the area for tens of thousands of years today’s major cities

Along the river include n and oron the silver medal goes to Poland perhaps a tiny bit surprising but completely understandable when you see the impressive route of the Vistula for 1,47 colomet it traverses essentially the country’s entire height from south to North starting just a few kilometers

Away from czechia at its source a national symbol of the country it flows directly through kov and Warsaw on its way to the Baltic Sea of course this leaves Russia in first place with the vulga at an incredible 3,531 km it’s the longest river in all

Of Europe it covers is a vast portion of Russia’s European territory as it flows from Northwest of Moscow all the way to the Caspian Sea ships can navigate almost its entire length thanks to various massive reservoirs making it critical to Russia’s Inland trade and transportation many of the country’s

Biggest cities are built either on the river or one of its tributaries and it’s considered an emblem of Russian society and culture and that wraps up this tour of every European country’s longest river hopefully this was enjoyable and hopefully my pronunciations weren’t too bad I tried my best thank you so much

    1. I like how you dress for these educational videos. Very elegant and not just a hoodie, it shows respect for your audience. Oh no, im going to be exposed because this isn't a river comment on a river video 😢. Cool video 😅

    2. The Weser in Germany is over 700 Km long which is longer than the Main. Its also located entirely in Germany despite some sources claiming it isn't for some reason.
Therefore Germany would be in 6th place.
