The Stirling engine was invented by the British physicist Robert Stirling in 1816, hence named the “Stirling Engine.” It operates by having a working fluid (hydrogen or helium) go through a cycle of cooling, compression, heating, and expansion within the cylinder to generate power. Therefore, it is also known as a hot air engine. The Stirling engine is an external combustion engine, and its efficiency typically falls between that of gasoline engines and diesel engines.
In this 16-cylinder engine, the right side consists of 8 cylinders serving as heating tubes, while the left side has 8 cylinders serving as cooling tubes (as shown in the above diagram). They are connected in the middle through 8 tubes for heat exchange.
