A Bicycle Tour of Slovenia | EPISODE 3: LJUBLJANA

We begin our day in the lovely medieval village of Skofja Loka, exploring the town and enjoying coffee in an outdoor cafe. then it’s a short ride to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. The city is vibrant and hectic, but we discover an absolutely huge city park where we enjoy the calm. Then the next morning we find an awesome outdoor market, and a city center that is far more lovely than we expected. Ljubljana turns out to be a delightful city, well worth a stop.

Good morning from the streets of [Applause] Luana we awoke to a beautiful foggy morning before it lifted revealing a beautiful Valley in the Ulen Alps Beyond and then we stepped inside for a hearty breakfast with a view wait what she said said you have to hit the red button well it’s good morning from our

Mini hotel in scofa scof Loca so we are leaving Scopia Loca and we’re off it’s a beautiful morning kind of warm and uh toasty it’s going to be a short day going to lublana and uh here we go here we go all right our itinerary had us riding a short

Distance today to the capital of Luana here we go place for coffee and there’s the tour groups so we took it slow riding into town for a coffee and a bask in the medieval light of Scopia Loca It was a perfect morning for simply wandering and wasting time a little sustainable Transportation event finally we got up the energy to begin our Trek but taking our time through the old town I loved how peaceful and relaxed the town felt but only 1 month before Scopia Loca was hit by what was

Called the worst natural disaster in slania’s history in early August of 23 days of rain raised the water of the mountain Mountain fed Rivers causing massive flooding and scofi Loca was hit especially hard we were told by locals that a centuries Old Bridge right along this River was Swept Away fortunately

The capucine bridge was spared and today only 5 or 6 weeks later everything seems back to Normal Before too long we were out of the city riding on varying surfaces along a broad flat plane beneath the Towering ulian Alps in the Distance bugs are crazy through here how you doing Kelsey I’m fine yeah trying not to inhale a swarm I know these Buffs help a lot smells like manure too yeah it’s Pig farming here do we take a ride or keep going straight how you doing Bailey

Good so biley as the craft queen has made these uh bug bug Buffs what I call them although I helped I suggested it be a buff remember that is true you offered design advice and Kelsey’s fiance gave me the material left over from one of his craft projects it was

Keeps not raining hope our our luck holds out I hope so there’s Kelsey’s bug buff it’s a little uh sci-fi in a way yeah it’s like mad KNX yeah exactly it does the trick keeps you breathing love these little farm Villages they’re so rustic here aren’t they you call it splendors indeed oh

Gosh and the gardens I just love the gardens and the flowers everywhere right the Flowers As reluctant as we were to leave the mountains a change of scenery on a bicycle tour always means movement and movement is a good thing we rode through peaceful Villages and verdant Farmland but we could feel the pull of the city as we drew ever closer soon we were following the Sava

River they say what River this was uh I can I take a picture of you guys Yes The day grew warmer and more humid and by the time we reached the city it was downright sweltering so far not real impressed with Luana be great both Kelsey and I had been to lublana before but my memory of it going back to 19 1984 was a bit [Applause]

Dreary we found a bike shop near our hotel where I got some quick adjustments on my bike into the chaos of the city we checked into our rooms grateful for a refreshing Shower We weren’t quite ready to explore the city and we wilded away the afternoon and evening with a long walk in the Park good morning from our convention Hotel here in Luana they were expecting solid rain but as you can see it’s pretty much blue sky SK yeah we got a pretty little Sunrise going here no real sign of rain they’re expecting like three absolutely solid days of rain 100% is what it shows on

The app but how often does this happen where you think it’s going to be really rough weather and you just get out there and the weather is very Cooperative it just seems to happen all the time we’re going to go down and get some breakfast

Uh it’s not a hard day today you know it’s funny cuz usually I navigate everything and I know exactly where we’re going and I know how many miles and on this trip since it’s been kind of supported and my two daughters are both serious Navigators I’ve just been kind

Of letting it go and just saying all right whatever comes comes you know anyway Lana turned out to be very pretty city we enjoyed the park last night just took a walk around the park got a little dinner so we’ll see what today brings just got to appreciate every day every

Moment uh this is all so special all right I’m going to go see if those girls are awake yet good morning from the streets of Lana kind of a gray somewhat overcast morning but the sun is poking out here and there nice and cool but it promises to be warm and humid possibly

Rain we’re heading towards the city center rather congested a lot of traffic big city be nice going through it but it’ll be nice getting out of it too let’s see where this takes us [Applause] the approach into the city was on safe easy to follow bike paths but the vibe

Was loud and hectic yeah the bike infrastructure is amazing like I feel like I would you would get so lost without it right yeah and if they had anything like this in Denver like I might not have left you know right yeah I know just like I mean you see these

Little bumps along here yeah the it’s like but gradually conditions improved the buildings became more interesting the traffic less frenetic and we found ourselves in a Charming European capital of broad pedestrian streets and an elegant eclectic architectural Style are those your squeaky braks Bailey no no this is cool let’s just kind of poke around a little bit this is a neat little Center here keep going slow I like this I’m just enjoying soaking it up it’s really pretty through here so cool W Che that out

Casper we made our way through the maze taking it all in and before long found an Open Air Market perfect for getting acquainted with the city and resupplying our Lunches who doesn’t just love these European markets did did we want any veggies at all to take with us um I would be interested in say an apple uhhuh oh man I just want I know beautiful Looking I’m just going to get carrots you want a carrot later I would love a carrot later that sounds Delight small carrot or large carrot small [Applause] [Applause] for Eventually we drifted back into the main part of town Kelsey a product designer found a shop specializing in Slovenian design and as she and Bailey shopped I busied myself with watching the comings and goings of the locals obsessing over the beautiful designs in the streets and also keeping an eye on the

Bikes as we were told repeatedly that Luana is a great place to get your bike stolen we weren’t taking any chances Lana really has all the fixings for a really nice little tourist destination I mean there’s a castle up on the hill lots of churches beautiful really fantastic architecture beautiful

City streets great Old Town nice shopping found a really nice Market it is very touristic um but uh you know it’s very nice and it’s very friendly and very pretty and uh yesterday I was as we were riding into town I was thinking boy I am not impressed but um

This morning we rode into the Heart of the City and we’re all very Charmed by the beauty of this place it’s really really really nice both Kelsey and I have been here although neither of us really remember I was here when it was still part of Yugoslavia I just don’t

Remember much about it I’ll have to look back at my old notes this was back in 1984 so it’s changed a lot since then it’s it’s a great place to come very very much a nice capital city of Europe [Applause]
